Replacing a Traditional Motion Control Card with a Small PC with Softmotion

Hi,
I'm totally new to Softmotion. So my questions might be very naive.
Anyway, we are currently using a Deltatau motion controller with three motor drives. The drives are all linear type and the motion controller provides the commutation. The motion controller is kind of expensive, a few $k. So I'm thinking, if it is possible to use a small embedded PC for a few $$$ and load it with the Softmotion software and control the drives.
So a few questions:
1) Can the Softmotion perform decoding if I connect the A/B encoder signal to the digital I/O of the embedded PC?
2) Can the Softmotion perform commutation and output the A/B signals with DAC?
3) I assume connecting the limit switches to the I/O should be no problem for the Softmotion to pickup.
4) What is the cost of the Softmotion per copy?
Anyway, those are my questions today. Is there anybody who might have done it this wya before?
Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay,
Take a look at this tutorial for acquiring a basic knowledge of what the software can do, but more important, what hardware setup you need to do this tasks.
There are several approaches (CompactRIO, PCI, PXI) but fundamentally NI handles 3 types of signals (CCW, CW which are Direction & step. Plus a drive enable) that we use for controlling motor drives. If your drive accepts these signals we could say you could potentially use NI products to interface with it.
I encourage you to talk to one of our local sales engineers for more information.

  • Where is the output for PWM on NI 7774 connected to motion control card 7356

    Hi,
I have NI motion control card 7356 which interfaced through 7774 interface board. PWM outputs are written to be on pins 5 and 9 on Digital IO, yet there is no indication about the whereabouts of these PWMs on the interface board (7774). Would you please help???
Asst. Prof. Vasfi Emre Omurlu, Ph.D.

    Simitci,
For the digital I/Os a UMI-7774 provides access to 16 digital lines. If you want to access other signals of the digital connector, you shouldn't connect it to the UMI but to another breakout box like the SCB-68. Please note that compared to the UMI-7774 the SCB-68 doesn't provide optical isolation or 24 V connectivity. If this doesn't work for you, you could think of building a customized cable that connects the lines for the16 digital I/Os to the UMI and the rest of the signals to another connector or breakout box.
You also should be aware of the fact that the PWM outputs of 73xx boards are static. That means that you can change the duty cycle and output frequency of these signals in software only, which is quite slow. In most cases these PWM signals can't be used for motion control tasks.
What do you intend to do with the PWM signals?
    Thanks and kind regards,

  • Can I replace my original LED control card to inverter card in T500

I bought my T500 half years ago.  It is WXGA 1280*800 with LED backlight.  However, I want to upgrade the screen to WSXGA+, which is 1680*1080, unfortunately, the WSXGA+ works with inverter card.  My question is , can I replace my original LED control card by inverter card?
part number of those 2 are
    LED control:  42W8080/ 42W8081 /42W802 ( I do not remember the exact same )

  • Has anybody used motion control card like a CNC contol with G-codes with part program editor?

I have to use national instruments PXI 7344 motion card to substitute a CNC control that uses G-codes and M-codes in a part program . I need to know if some body has already developed such an application and also developed a part program editor.

ABMSoft - an NI alliance member in Eastern Europe has developed a very powerful G-code interpretor for LabVIEW. Their ABMS-NC toolkit for LabVIEW also includes an offline simulation tool. They have successfully deployed many machines using this toolkit. Its available directly from ABMSoft for $995. You can contact ABMSoft directly.

  • Motion:  Video Cards with Mac Pro?

I don't see the new video cards for the Mac Pro listed in the "minimum" or "recomended" system requirements.
Does anyone know how these new cards will rate?

My understanding is that the X1900 is pretty powerful, the 7300 - not so much - more like the 6600, and of course the Quadro is smokin' - but probably not good bang-for-buck when it comes to Motion. Meaning that the Quadro will give great results, but not a LOT over the X1900...
Of course, the x1900 still has the 2k texture limit. And it's too early for any aftermarket/flashing options yet.

  • How to use ELMO motion control device with LABVIEW

    Hi,
    I am
new to LabVIEW withvery little controls
experience (just now graduated).  I need to use LabVIEW, NI USB 6009( DAQ)
and a Harmonica servo drive from Elmo to control a voice coil.  . What I
am looking for is some general guidance to get me started; point me in
the correct direction so I can get rolling.  I will be using a RS-232
line between the Harmonica and the PC.
I have generated a sine waveform to the NI USB 6009 from LABVIEW. I have to send this signal through the ELMO Harmonica 5/60 N to control a voice coil. I have
been reading the Elmo SimpleIQ Software Manual and am  lost Kindly help me out.
    Regards,
    Pawan
The software manual states using Interpreter Language or User
Programming Language.  Both of the languages seem to resemble what I
remember of C++, sort of.  The document explains "while" and "for"
loops, etc.; however, my understanding is that I should be able to use
LabVIEW to accomplish such tasks and then just ask LabVIEW to output a
command to the Bassoon to control my voice coil.  My best guess is that
I use the "System Commands" to output commands to the Bassoon although
the software manual also mentions compiling code similar to that of
    standard programming modes.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks

    Hello,
You have mentioned that you are using motion assistant to generate the code. Do you run the LabVIEW VI that it has generated or are you directly running it from Motion assistant?

  • PWM in Motion Control

    HI All,
I am facing a problem in Motion Controller.
We are using PCI 7344 and UMI 7774.
Now their is a connector on the Motion control card for Digital I/O.
In this Pin No 5 and Pin No9 are PWM1 and PWM2 respectively. Now I have used to VI PWm duty and config PWM. I am seeing the PWM waveform on CRO.But to my surprise the output is not matching the required data.
IF you go for HElp and click config PWM VI block , you can see a table given where the internal clock selected corresponds to a particular frequency in 734X and 735X.Now since I am using 7344 my frequency should match with 734X table , whereas this is not happening and
my frequency matches the table of 735X.
SO i am bit confused about the controller specs or is someor the other way Iam missing some thing more.

    Manish,
please have a look at this table which comes with the NI Motion function help file for NI-Motion 7.2. This table should contain the correct values. The latest revisions of the 734x are named 7340 and the PWM output should follow this table.

  • PXI ethernet activation requires initializing motion control?

On a PXI with multiple 7344 motion control cards and an ethernet LAN connection, ethernet does not become active (e.g., flickering LED on the PXI controller connector) until the 7344 card is initialized. Shouldn't ethernet become active as part of booting up?

The behavior is no longer reproducible, although several combinations of booting and plugging in the Ethernet cable were explored. LAN access is now available promptly upon booting or connecting the cable, as expected. A residual explanation might be that Win2K on the PXI 8175 controller did not fully respond when DHCP on the local router/firewall changed the PXI's IP address, due to changes in the network configuration. In this case, initializing the 7344 cards is taken as an event that caused the OS to complete LAN activation. Many other events with other hardware might have had the same effect.

  • 4 channel independent motion controll adressing

I want to run four indepent motion/plc programs with each system using one axis and one analog output as a channel of the same motion controll card (PCI 7344)
Each indepentent system has its own bottons for starting different setions of a semi automated process and these processes are intependent in timing.
Can this be done with one 4 axis PCI 7344 NI motion card?

The answer is short and simple: yes.
You only need to make sure that the controller is initialized before
you start your four applications and that you don't share resources
    between the programs.

  • Download for 7342 motion control

Are there any downloads avaliable to control an xy stage using Labview 6.1 and a PCI-7342 motion control card?

Two Axis Vector Move with Position Monitor.vi located in the Multiple Axis.llb ('default LabVIEW path'\Examples\Motion\FlexMotion\) demonstrates two-axis motion and should work with the PCI-7342. That example demonstrates the fundamentals of two-axis vector move but if you need a more specific example let me know.

  • How can I use flex motion control VI without hardware?

I would like to try and simulate the motion control of my system before i hook up the motion control card. But when I use the VI in flex motion contro took kit it asks for address or something and gives me an error. Can't I just simulate without hardware?

    Hello,
The only way you can use FlexMotion without any hardware is to set it up as Open Loop Stepper Control. Otherwise, you will get errors when no encoder signal is fed back to the controller.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

  • Error -10401 appears when I try to read in my Encoders (TTL-Signal) via a LabView-"nuDrive 2SX-411" and Motion Controller Card

    Hy there.
Im using two "Haidenhain ERN 420" Encoders with TTL-Output Signal
    A NI-Motion Controller 7334 with an NI-"nuDrive 2SX-411"
When I try to Read the Encoders Position (with ex.-Programm/Source) the Message: "Error -10401 occurred at AI Group Config ... the specified device is not a NI-product" appears
Can anybody help me to initiallize/Use the Encoders in Labview 6.01?
    thanks, phil.

    Phil,
It looks to me according to the error that you were trying to use DAQ functions to access the Motion controller. The Motion controller uses its own functions. There are two for reading position:
Functions Palette >> Motion & Vision >> Flexmotion >> Trajectory Control >> Read Position.
    Functions Palette >> Motion & Vision >> Flexmotion >> Analog & Digital I/O >> Read Encoder Position.
You may find a useful example in:
    C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 6.1\examples\Motion\FlexMotion\One Axis.llb\One Axis Move with Position Monitor.vi
Make sure that you have configured and initialized your board properly in MAX.
I would suggest that you post your question on the Motion Control section and not in the LabVIEW section. Also, check the Dev
elopment Library section of the NI Developer Zone for the Motion Control section with tutorials and example code.
    Good luck!
