Replacing internal HDD for my 2007 24" iMac- old one is Seagate Barracuda 7200 10, 750GB (ST3750640AS).  Can I replace it with a Seagate 7200 12, 1TB (ST31000524AS)?

Original HDD failed.  Want to keep the computer but would like to up the HDD from 750GB to 1TB, using same manufacturer.  It appears that the 1TB model is the same size and is Serial SATA like the original, but would like to confirm before purchasing.
Thanks!

Should work fine, good luck with the upgrade!

iMAC 2010 which HDD can I use to replace the malfunctioned Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB?

After doing a bit more research, the 2010 iMacs do appear to have a third cable connecting to the  hard drive, for the internal temp sensor.  This would appear to be the block of 8 pins that are on almost all drives, but they are normally intended for jumpers.  Unfortunately I was unable to find any documentation or specs that would indicate this pin block connects to the internal temp sensor on either standard (non-Apple) WD Black or Seagate 7200.12 drives.
I did find some info that may be of some use:
WD: Where to connect an external temperature sensor to a Serial ATA or EIDE hard drive.iFixit: Replace the hard drive, how do I connect the hard drive thermal sensor?
    Apple Technician Guide: iMac 2010 27" (mid-2010)
Various discussion threads I found through google searching indicated some people succeeded with installing an external temp sensor on the body of the drive.
    Sorry I couldn't help more.

what is the best 500GB HDD for a 2007 macbook pro. This is a pre unibody machine.
I am upgrading at the minute and can't make my mind up. I need a 7200rpm drive, but have heard some stories concerning overheating etc.
These are the drives I am looking at: Seagate Momentus, Hitachi Travelstar and Western Digital all 500GB, running at 7200rpm.

If you haven't already, you might look a the user comments at http://www.newegg.com on those hard drives. If you don't get other comments here, you might post in the MBP discussion (this is the iMac discussion) at https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro

You can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities to get all your files from one iMac to the other. If you want to upgrade your older model to MtLion you need to have at least a mid 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo with a bare minimum of 2GB of RAM. Then you need to buy the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD , update with
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
at which point you can access the App Store to purchase and install MtLion 10.8 where you would then have access to the iCloud.

  • Can I use additional internal HDD for my Satellite A200-1A9?

    Hello, new to these forums,
I recently bought the A200-1A9 and I'm very pleased with it. I was interested in adding an additional internal HDD to the exisitng 120 GB one . I obviously didn't do enough research as I bought a Toshiba MK2035GSS: 2.5" HDD 200 GB thinking it would slot right in the spare slot and it doesn't.
So really I'm looking for some advice on if I can add an extra internal drive and if so what model and how. After taking of the back slot cover there does look to be room for another drive although I'm not sure if the correct connections are there or maybe if the space is used for somthing else.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Hello Martin
As far as I know some A200 models are delivered with 2 HDDs. because of that Toshiba make standard notebook chassis. All A200 models use this standard chassis. Your A200 is delivered with just one HDD and because of that place for second HDD is empty. This does not mean you can use second HDD.
I have the same notebook as you and in my case there are no any HDD connectors prepared for second HDD.

I recently moved from Winnipeg to Brandon MB, and have changed my email address and attempted to delete the old one. Everytime I go to download or transfer data to my iphone or ipad I hit a wall. The system is asking me for my password to my old email address that dosent exist and I can't remember anyway. How do I get around this wall? I cant figutre it out. I do have a new email and password that has been registered with iCloud, etc. but the old one keepd jumping in

We need to be clear here. Did you create a second ID, or just modify the single ID?

  • Which version of Aperture would be recommended for a 2007 Intel iMac?

Just wondering what version of Aperture is going to be best to use on this system, I may be able to pick up an old version 2nd-hand (dated 2007, which matches the date of the iMac) which I assume is possibly Aperture version 1.
The iMac is a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM, work will just be light  with compact camera digital photos and the occasional scanned document or photo, mainly to fill in the gaps where iPhoto has had some of the finer controls removed.
Will Aperture work along-side iPhoto?  So, in iPhoto (the one that comes with Tiger, '08 I believe), will there be a menu option to 'Send to Aperture', or does Aperture make it's own library and basically replace iPhoto?

Normally I would agree, but this iMac is running Tiger 10.4.11, I believe Aperture 3 requires Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
The reason the iMac is on Tiger is that there was some problem with a couple of applications immediately crashing when they were run, they did not do this until just the other day and then they would always do it, I couldn't find a logical explanation for this and after a few attempts at re-installing bits and bobs I decided to back up and try a clean install of Snow Leopard, this went on OK but none of the Combo updates would install, they all failed as soon as the install started; this could have been due to a bad install from disc but no other discs showed any problems and I have used those discs before without any problems (plus there was no indication of a bad install).  I decided to take Snow Leopard off the machine and go back to it's original Mac OS install DVDs (Tiger).  It is fully updated as far as Tiger and the rest of the software on there goes, it is perfectly usable.
This iMac is always going to be slow compared to an i5 model, I just do not want to bog it down too much with modern features and processor expectations.  Also, while it is running cleanly I am hesitent to put Snow Leopard back on it in case it runs in to the same problems again.
Oh, and I ran repair permissions and disk verify several times (including when booted from the install discs) before resorting to re-installing Mac OS.
The upshot is that I need Aperture that will run on Tiger, which is probably v1 but I don't know about v2 etc.  I am mainly interested to know whether or not v1 is a turkey and one to avoid.

  • HDD for both PC and iMac file sharing via AE connection

I am considering to use, via airport exreme, one HDD as the common and backup HD for sharing some files between the window based laptop and iMac, what type to HDD I need? Do I need to partition the HDD?

Do you intend to keep this HDD attached to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) for sharing between PCs & Macs or will you also want to move the HDD between computers?
If you will be leaving it attached to the AEBSn, them I would recommend that you first format it for HFS+ by temporarily connecting it to your Mac.
If it will be doing both, then you may want to partition it as the AEBSn will only read drives formatted in either HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Using internal hdd for multiple backups

Any way to do partitions in order to do backups from 1 mbp via time machine, and 2 pc with linux and windows manually copying files via samba or ftp?

Short of removing the drive physically from your Time Capsule, there is no way to partition the Time Capsule drive because you are connecting to the drive through a server and not directly. You can, however, accomplish what you want by first setting up Time Capsule with your MacBook Pro and Time Machine. After your first backup is complete, your Time Capsule will appear on your network as any other server and you can save things on and off of it from your PCs as you see fit. The only real limitation is that Time Machine will keep taking up more and more space until the drive is full (it will NOT overwrite items you've saved onto the drive from your PCs). You'll have to do some small maintenance and delete older backups manually as your Time Capsule drive fills up. You may want to consider plugging a USB external drive into the Time Capsule's USB port and using that drive with Time Machine, leaving the Time Capsule's internal drive as your PC dumping ground.

  • Using external HDD for Time Machine and files in one single partition ?

    Hello everybody.
I've been searching for some time now and have encountered some contradictory answers, so I turn to you.
I would like to know if it's possible (one) and safe (two) to use a single partition for both Time Machine and file storage. I've read that this should be ok, since TM is actually only a single folder, which means the rest can easily be used as a standard Finder drive. Some people say however that this is not good to do so, because TM will run out of space quicker. But if the -let's say- 30Gb used for files where used by TM after a month, that would be the same, wouldn't it ? It would simply erase older backups. But is it safe to do so ? Will Time Machine not makes errors when accessing files or doing an entire system backup ? I don't won't to make a new partition really, that's why I'm asking you here, to let me know some arguments about it.
Thank you very much for your answers.

    Marekova wrote:
Yet, overlooking that, you say "safe: mostly", why is that ? where's the "danger" or, what where you thinking when you said that ? Aren't these simple folder's ? Do you mean that, because during a full backup, these "stranger" files could be a problem ? It would be great if that was clarified, since I've found no indication about it elsewhere, has anyone tryed it ?
Oh, yes folks have tried it. That's why I (and many others) recommended against it.
Here's a similar thread from just the other day: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1926893 Note the responses from the top 2 "gurus" on this forum.
I probably should have asked you what you mean by "safe." If you mean, will TM delete other files on it's partition, no, it won't. If you mean, can there be problems, then yes, there can be conflicts and difficulties, as mentioned.
As to whether TM backups are simple folders, no, they aren't. They look like normal files and folders, but they actually contain what are variously called "hard links," "multi-links," and (my own personal favorite term) "ghost clones." Think of them as very fancy aliases. So they're not to be fooled with directly, by us mere mortals.

and, if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#tutorial=leopardtimemachine
You should also know that, for some reason, TM stores it's backups differently when it does them wirelessly. In that case, they're in a "SparseBundle," very different from the structure used for directly-attached backups.
All the more reason to put each Mac's backups in a separate partition, and if you want to store other data there also, a 3rd partition for that.
I've been using Mac since many years now, but I have no idea about backups, so excuse me if the statements appear a little childish.
Nope. Even those of us who are "older than dirt" and have used many flavors and varieties of backup systems for decades are in a whole new world with Time Machine.
And most of the folks on this forum who found themselves in deep trouble got there because they assumed things or didn't ask.

  • I installed bootcamp 5 for my late 2012 iMac 21" and installed the latest version of windows 8, however when i boot with windows i dont get any sound, what can i do to fix this?

I'm trying to playa game called day z (not sure if many are familiar) through boot camp 5 and the newest version of windows 8 it's pretty much a must to hear everything going on around me and I can't exactly do that when the sound drivers aren't working. I've updated all of my software and still nothing is working. If anyone has a link to the newest windows 8 sound drivers it'd be greatly appreciated. Or if you have any other solutions it would be greatly appreciated!

I'd recommend reposting in the Boot Camp forum, with a few exceptions most people on this forum only speak OS X. That forum can be found at:

  • HT204053 I changed my Apple ID (email address) to a new Apple ID (email address), but my iPhone is asking for my password on my old email address which has been discontinued, now I can not get into iCloud or add Apps because the old email and password do

I recently changed my Apple ID (to my new email address), but my iPhones are still showing my old Apple ID and are asking for my old password.  It no longer exists and now I can not add any Apps or get into iCloud because they previous ID no longer exists but that is what is popping up in Apple ID box and I cannot change it on the phone.  How do I get my new Apple ID assigned to my phone(s)?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If it's iCloud that is asking for these details:
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID using your current password, you don’t need access to this address if it’s previously been used with your Apple ID, once you have saved these details enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone" and delete the account from your device.
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, save it once again and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.
This article provides more information about Activation Lock.
If it's iTunes asking for these details:
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > iTunes & App store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.
