Replacing return character problem

Hello all
I have to replace a paragraph sign (return character) in a text doc I have to import.
In the text doc, the sign looks like a square.
When copied to MSWord, it appears as a paragraph sign, and act as one.
Questions:
Is it a paragraph sign?
How do I represent this sign in Java to replace it by using StringTokenizer?
Can I also use indexOf() method to do it?
I tried using ("\r"), but it was unsuccessfull.
Any other ideas?
Please help!
Regards
Jaco

when you have your text printed in NotePad for example,
return character is not \r but \r\n (return carriage + new line)
try to print all the ASCII codes using the code :
public class Test {
private static void printCodes(String p_text) {
for(int i=0;i<p_text.length();i++) {
System.out.println("char "+p_text.charAt(i)+" : "+(int) p_text.charAt(i));
public static void main(String [] args) {
printCodes("some text here\r\n and there.");

  • The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse.

    The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse. Should I take it to the apple store and see if they can replace the screen? is it expensive to replace the backlight/invertor?

    This sounds to me like a fairly common Inverter Fault.
    It is not the screen that needs replacing by the sounds of it,
    It sounds like either the inverter board or the inverter cable needs replacing.
    My understanding is that inverter / inverter cable repairs aren't too expensive, but not too cheap!
    Obviously your best way to find out how much it would cost to be repaired would be to take it in to an Apple Store, as I have never had to have one replaced myself, but the information I'm providing, is based on what I've read elsewhere.
    How old is the MacBook?

    Try to use parameters instead hardcoding values in the queries:
    select * from user where lower(username)=?;
    and don't forget to lower the value from java side as well ;-)

  • Replace single character and leave the ones in expressions

    Hi,
    I'm looking for nice and elegant solution to my problem. Let's say I have a string "e+exp(e)". I want to replace all "e" with "1", excepts the one in "exp". I was trying to use regular expressions but I've failed after an hour... The solution should be able to solve things like replace "a" in "rand(a)" without changing rand. Basically I need to replace single character without replacing the ones in words/expressions.
    Any ideas?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    No time for elegance right now, just brute force.  I would pad the string with spaces on each end to remove end cases and then search for the character surrounded by non-word characters.

    You should not use "imta.filter" as the destinationfilter file-name. imta.filter is the reserved for the MTA-wide sieve filter file-name:
    http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite/Mail+Filtering+and+Access+Control#MailFilteringandAccessControl-ToCreateMTAWideFilters
    When I send email from anonymous i want delete old Return-path and add new return-path. The problem is that i see on header the new return-path but i see the old also. The "Return-Path:" header is automatically added by the MTA after the sieve filter has been evaluated which is why you get two Return-Path: headers in the resultant message.

  • Is it possible to export to PDF without a Return character at the end of every line?

    I am the author of a book whose first edition has been typeset and extensively amended in InDesign.  I now need to rewrite the first edition to produce a second edition.
    When I copy-and-paste from the PDF with which the publisher has supplied me into MS Word, I get a Return character at the end of every line, which means that text doesn’t automatically wrap and sentences are fragmented so that I get spurious grammar errors.
    I know that not all PDF files have a Return at the end of every line.  Is it possible to restrict Returns to the end of paragraphs when exporting from InDesign to PDF?  If so, what should the publisher be asking the typesetter to do?

    Thanks for your lightning-swift and helpful replies, Mike & Ellis.
    I don't have InDesign myself, so I know hardly anything about how it's used.  I'm just trying to research what an internationally-known publisher should already know how to do, but apparently doesn't!
    Following your suggestion, Mike, I have downloaded the trial version of Acrobat and exported the PDF to a Word file.  This has been moderately successful as there are far fewer spurious Return characters, just a few that I suspect may be hangovers from the typesetter having introduced soft returns in ID.
    As you've suggested Peter and Ellis, I'll suggest that the publisher asks the typesettter to export from ID to RTF and Text to see if that's even better.

    I want to Replace all the Existence of the word - "Test" in a string with "Test1" whereever a space exits before the word Test and someother alphabet after "Test" i.e. Test will be replaced with Test1 if a word starts with Test and contains more alphabets also. For example - TestName should be replaced with Test1Name while MyTest should not be updated to MyTest1.
    I have tried to use below query which uses oracle regular expressions -
    SELECT REGEXP_REPLACE('MYCOMPANY TEST TESTGEET INDIA PVT LTD TEST','\s(TEST)\w',' TEST1') FROM DUAL
    Output -
    "MYCOMPANY TEST *TEST1EET* INDIA PVT LTD TEST"

    Can someone please suggest how can i do this..... may b m doing some silly mistake but sorry m a newbie to regular expression...

  • How to Type a Return Character

    Please feel free to hit me over the head with the obvious stick if the answer I seek is obvious!
    How can I type a Return character into the Info/Comments field? I've been using the Clipboard, but is there some kind of keyboard combo I can use instead?
    Thanks!

    Unfortunately, no. The Comments field doesn't support line breaks with the Return key (or a key combination thereof).
    The only workaround is to migrate over to the Lyrics tab and type your text here (feel free to use Return to create line breaks).
    Copy your text, migrate back to the Info tab, and paste your contents into the Comments field.
    Line breaks should then appear.

    is there any possiblity to change the  standard conversion in xi.

    Graphical mapping does not support special character like & , <,> to be mapped.
    You can encode & as and in UTF-8 only.
    if you want the special character to be used, Opt XSLT mapping with ISO-8859-1 encoding

Or, how can I solve Turkish character problem when using BI JDBC connection?
    Thanks,

    Hi Nihat,
    I think it depends on your JDBC Driver, which character set it supports. Your database supports turkish characters, when it works with a stored procedure. Maybe you can try to use a conversion for using JDBC. Did you check the manual of the jdbc driver? Did you contact the the jdbc driver vendor?
