Replacing Westell 6100 modem with Netgear Genie

Good day. I'm replacing Westell 6100 modem with a Netgear Genie. I need the following data to complete hookup. Thanks.
Netgear Broadband ADSL2+ Modem (DMP111SP)
IP Address
Subset Mask
Default gateway
Preferred DNS Server
Alternative DNS Server

Since you're plugged into the Westell, use http://192.168.1.1/ to log into the modem. From there, see if your modem shows something along the lines of "Routed Bridge" mode or if it shows "PPPoE" as the connection type. If PPPoE, follow the post I mentioned above. The same goes with Routed Bridge mode. Worst case scenario, call Verizon and have them ensure your Westell is configured correctly if you cannot get online with the Westell, and from there we'll see how the Netgear needs to be configured.
Also, what may have happened here is your Netgear's IP address could have changed. You will want to open up a Command Prompt Window (Start > search for the program "cmd.exe" or go to Start > Run > enter in cmd.exe) and run the command ipconfig. Default Gateway should give the IP of the router you're attached to in a home network.

  • Replacing Westell 2100 Modem with 6100

I am next to clueless with this stuff, so be kind. I've been having to reboot my 6 year old 2100 at least once a week to get my max DL speed back. Verizon sent me a 6100 to replace it in hopes that it might solve the problem. I swapped all the connections, but the Internet light on the 6100 stays red. What do I need to do to get the 6100 up and running? It came with no instructions. Do I need to call Verizon and have them enable it or whatever? Thanks.

Strange thing, I always had a Westell 6100 with my netgear wireless for 3yrs now.  Went from 1meg to 3meg with no modem reboot issues but when i got to the 7meg plan and now the 10/15meg plan, I have to reboot my westell like clock work almost every 7 days...no one knows why and I have not changed anything but the plan upgrade. I suspect V is doing something with the line regularly.  But the thing is its not a nightly or off hours issue...it could be AM, noon or early PM when this happens but the sequence seems to be every 7th day or so.  It happened today for the first time on my new 10/15 meg plan.  I have a new verizon 7500 modem/wireless combo that i may try to see if it fixes that.  But otherwise never had issues with the westell 6100/netgear combo i have on 24x7.

  • Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

    Hi all,
I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
1.)  set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
2.)  Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
3.)  Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?
Thank you VERY much for your help in this matter!
    SUE  ;>)

the router has two connections.  one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case.  and one is called a LAN, local area network.
what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
and then way your LAN connects is DHCP,  how all of your local computers connect.  This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP.      if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
that is fine, and normal.  if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

  • Verizon Turbo Dsl plan with Westell 6100 modem? Help?

So I have a westell 6100 modem and on the 7th I upgraded my bundle i had 1 Mbps for Internet , verizon homephone freedom essentials, and Directv. Since fios is not available were I live. And my new bundle is Verizon Dsl 7.0-1 Mbps turbo plan, verizon essentials and directv for $115.00. My question is will my modem provison the speed correct? will it still work? Or do I have to buy a new modem? Thanks!.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you have been using the 6100 previously then the modem should sync to the new speed automatically.  If yareou still using an old style flat phone cable from the jack to the modem it may not be capable of the faster speed.  The round tan colored cable which originally was supplied with the modem would be the one to use.  I moved up recently from 3 to the turbo 7.1 via ASDL2plus and found that Verizon at my location has capped the speed at about 5.5.  Their out is to say speeds up to 7.1.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 modem/router, and Airport Extreme

Useful info so you won't have to go through what I did.
Verizon ISP using the Westell 6100 modem/router & Airport Extreme.
The Westell 6100 was configured during installation as a modem and router with a direct connection to the Mac. You can actually connect Airport Extreme at this point with an ethernet connection to the Westell and it will work, but you can't do any of the sharing things (remote login, personal web sharing, etc.) To do those things the Westell needs to be in the Bridge mode. In a nutshell, you have to edit the Westell's VC configuration to establish Bridge mode, and disable its DHCP server. Then you have to set up the Airport to connect using PPPoE using the Account Name and Password from Verizon.
    1. With the Westell connected directly to the Mac, access the device at 192.168.1.1.
    a. Under VC Configuration the first of seven configurations should already be enabled as VPI 0, VCI 35 using PPPoE. Edit that one and change it to Bridge mode.
    b. Under DHCP configuration, disable the DHCP server. You can also do this under the Private LAN Configuration page. If at the latter, do not attempt to disable the Private LAN (it won't let you anyway). Verizon tech support kept insisting I had to disable the Private LAN, which caused a great amount of anguish!
    c. Before leaving 192.168.1.1 (you won't be able to access it again once the Airport is connected and configured) make sure you know your ISP account name and password. This was assigned during my setup procedure with Verizon, a random selection of letters and numbers.
    2. Now hook up the Airport WAN to the Westell's ethernet port and the Mac to the Airport LAN. Fire up Airport Admin Utility.
    a. Under the Internet tab, select Connect Using PPPoE.
    b. Configure PPPoE using the Verizon Account Name.
    c. Change password to the Verizon account password.
    3. Restart and that's it.

Thank you for your post. When I moved to another home, Verizon sent me the Westell 6100 and I had been having trouble staying connected to the Internet with my Airport. Last night, I loss wireless access and the Airport status in the menu bar read "Looking for a PPPoE connection". Verizon customer support was able to get me back online, albeit with only a direct Ethernet connection between my iBook and the 6100.
I found your post and followed your instructions. Now all the iBooks in our household are back online via the Airport. Thank you very much!

  • How to replace westell 6100 with westell 327w?

    Hi all,
I am currently using a Westell 6100 and I just inherited a Westell 327W from my brother who switched over to FIOS.
Can I replace the 6100 with the 327W? And how do I go about doing that?
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

If the 327w has newer firmware on it, you can just factory reset it and then connect it up. Once it is online, visit http://192.168.1.1/ and use admin/password respectively as the login information. Then, set a new password for the gateway.
Once done, visit http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm and choose the disable button. Assuming the modem has been able to get a connection at this time, you should be online.

  • Is it reasonable to replace Qwest Pk5000 modem with "Time Capsule" to serve as my modem/local Wifi/backup device?

I am both new and old.  That is, I am an old guy who is relatively new to Mac and to forums.  I could use some advice, please.  I believe I want to buy Apple's "Time Capsule" (TC) to back up my 1 week old MacBook Pro and my old Win 7 Laptop.  Currently I have Qwest as my provider.  They have installed their ActionTek PK5000 modem.
Question, can I, or better yet, should I replace their modem with TC?  I plan to use a wireless network for my home (iPad, wireless printer) and my kids when they come to visit.  I believe Qwest won't support TC ... understood, but would it work? and would it be the smart thing to do?  If so, would TC need to configured manually or would air port utitlity handle the details?  Thanks for any advice. -- tom

That's possible, but a bit tricky.  Apple's Time Machine software will back up your Mac to the TC, but you'll have to find a Windows app to back up the laptop.  I don't do Windoze, but understand the WinClone app may work for that.
Further, mixing Time Machine backups on a TC's internal HD causes some conflicts.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.
Question, can I, or better yet, should I replace their modem with TC?
No.  The Time Capsule is a wireless router with a hard drive.  It does not contain a modem.
Usually, you plug the TC into the modem.  The TC then provides the network.
But that modem is also a router (ie, provides a network), so you'll need to either turn its router function off, or configure the TC to join the existing network.
If so, would TC need to configured manually or would air port utitlity handle the details?
Either way, you use Airport Utility to configure the TC.

  • Replace Home Hub 4 with Netgear DGN2000?

I recently switched to BT Broadband from NewNet and replaced the Netgear DGN2000 ADSL wi-fi router that I had been using with the Home Hub 4 supplied by BT.
I am finding that the wi-fi coverage provided by the Home Hub 4 is not as extensive as that provided by the DGN2000.
Can I replace the Home Hub 4 with the Netgear DGN2000 and, if so, what username and password would be required to access BT?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I would suggest that you start by resetting the Netgear to factory default, to remove any existing configurations. Then start again via the setup wizard, if there is one.
You normally need to enter a password in the second field, use a password of BT.
    Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
    Multiplexing Method: VC-BASED
    VPI: 0
    VCI: 38
Normally if it fails to authenticate, you are automatically directed to a BT Wholesale website.
I am assuming that you are still on an ADSL connection, and not BT Infinity with the Openreach modem?

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 Modem and Linksys router

If anyone is having a hard time getting these three to work together to get on-line, I know your pain. I've spent the better part of two days trying to get these devices to talk to each other. After hours spent trying different combinations and little to no help from Verizon and Linksys I have finally gotten my DSL up and running through my Linksys router. I post this in hopes that someone doesn't spin their wheels like I have been doing over the past few days. Here's what I did to get them to work:
    1. Reset both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    2. Unplug the router and the modem
    3. Connect an ethernet cable from your Apple to the Westell modem and power it back on
    4. Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser of choice. The username should be "admin" (w/o the quotes) and password should be "password" (again no quotes)
    5. It will ask you to update your username and password
    6. Under the CONFIGURATION heading select VC CONFIGURATION and click on EDIT
    7. Make sure that both PROTOCOL and MODE are set to BRIDGE
    8. Click on SET VC and then click OK when asked if you want to reset for new configuration to take affect
    9. Once again power off the modem for about a minute then power it back up
    10. Login again with the login you created above and go to the STATUS/ABOUT column and write down the MAC address
    11. Set it to DHCP OFF and change the Private Lan Modem IP to 192.168.2.1. Write this down and keep it so you can access your modem in the future.
    12. Save the settings. You will lose communication with the Westell at this point. Once again, power down the modem for about a minute.
    13. Connect the ethernet cable from the modem into the Internet port on the Linksys router and then connect your Apple to the first ethernet spot
    14. Turn on both the Linksys router and the Westell modem
    15. With your browser (Safari or Firefox) type in 192.168.1.1. Under SETUP go to MAC ADDRESS CLONE and enter the MAC address you wrote down for your Westell modem earlier and then save the settings
    16. Make sure you are in DHCP mode and not PPPoE
    17. Save, exit, and you should be on-line
That was a lot more difficult than it had to be. I certainly didn't get this from the support folks from Linksys or Verizon...a lot of trial and error and investigating on-line. I hope this saves you from the headaches I experienced.

    Feedback for Linksys:
In the Linksys Help system "Easy Answers" there's the question "How can I set up a Linksys router with DSL Internet?" This is what I used to try and solve my Internet connection problem.
The Answer says "Most DSL providers use Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) ..." and goes on to explain how to set up the router for PPPoE. However, my service (AT&T/Yahoo high speed internet) uses DHCP. That meant I spent several frustrating hours trying to get it to work with PPPoE.
The Answer would have been better if it first explained how to tell if you have PPPoE or DHCP (see the reply from vness above, it's an excellent explanation), and then linked to the appropriate setup instructions.
    Thanks for the help!!!!

  • Drivers for the Westell 6100 modem for my DSL?

Does anyone know where I can get the proper driver for my 6100 Westell modem?  I have a yellow question mark in my device manager and i keep getting a no driver found for ethernet connection message.

If you are using ethernet, no drivers for the modem are needed.

  • Westell 6100 Modem Settings

    Good evening,
I was checking my dsl info in the the Westell modem when I decided to venture further.  I hope someone can assist me to understand the following:
The main page indicates my computer access is shared.  It is not; as far as I know.
    1.  Shared:  Ethernet - 1 Device
    2. (This concerns me)  Firewall - No Security   (I actually changed this to Typical Security)
    3.  Security Log - Packets allowed in/outbound
    4.  DMZ Host - disable
    5.  Firewall log - Log Allowed - Inbound packets      }
Log Blocked Traffic - All Packets  }   I changed some of the settings.
                               Specified in Rules - Enabled          }
                               Adm. Access - Disabled                 }
Although I am paying for up to 7.1M, I have never received anything over 6.5-6.7M/36-37k.
These are the stats from the modem:
    DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 7616 864 Margin (dB) 14.5 11.0 Line Attenuation (dB) 34.0 24.0 Transmit Power (dBm) 19.6 11.9

    * 1. Shared: Ethernet - 1 Device *
What is your OS and Version? For example Windows XP..
    * 2. (This concerns me) Firewall - No Security (I actually changed this to Typical Security)*
    Good job
    * 3. Security Log - Packets allowed in/outbound *
Keeps a log of all traffic inbound and outbound.
    * 4. DMZ Host - disable *
To be avoided as much as possible. Is equal to being directly connected to the net.
    * 5. Firewall log - Adm. Access - Disabled *
To me that sounds like remote control of the router is disabled. Which is good thing to leave disabled unless you need remote access...
    ^^

  • Have lost ability to connect Cisco VPN - Westell 6100G modem and Netgear WNR1000 v2 router

I have lost the ability to connect my work laptop VPN through my verizon dsl connection.  It works at the library, at hotels, and over my BB tether.  Corporate IT thinks it is either the router or the modem.  There are also some websites that will not load, such as tetongravity.com.  The websites seem to be a problem over a wired connection as well as wireless, and I have only tried attaching the VPN while on a wirelesss connection.
Any advice on how to straighten this out?  I have rebooted both a couple of times and updated the firmward on the router to no avail.  Also, do you know what the default user name and password are on the modem?
    Any help would be appreciated.

PS - it worked last week, and stopped working over the weekend.

  • Replacing 1st generation TimeCapsule with 4th gen. Tips on setting up?

Suggestions for setting up replacement Time Capsule?

There is not a huge amount of difference. Larger hard drive.. perhaps.. !! And dual band simultaneous wireless.. how you use that depends again on your setup.. but it isn't usually an issue that needs any particular setup. There is a guest network also available.. if you don't need it then leave it off.
