Reporting Problems Causes Problems

Hi, I'm a newcomer to Macs (have an 8 core Mac Pro) and have two possible related problems:
Whenever an application crashes it says "Report to Apple". When I click "Report..." it says "Could not connect". I am behind an HTTP proxy and have a .PAC listed in the network connection, but no joy.
Whenever I get a full system freeze (twice a week? Too often!) I get an option on reboot to "Report the problem or view the details" of the crash. If I press "Report..." I don't get anything - no crash dump or anything so I can't see what software or hardware is likely to be the culprit.

*Don't suppose you know where kernel panic dumps are stored (if anywhere)?*

  • Photoshop CC 2014, A problem caused the program to stop working

When opening Photoshop CC 2014, I get "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly". Works fine on my home computer but the new one in the office has the error message. I have the latest cloud version of the program. I've updated the AMD/ATI display driver- first from the HP site supporting the Win 7 Pro laptop I'm working on(driver ver.13.2) and then from the AMD site (ver.14.1) I've installed all windows updates. Still get the same message followed by Photoshop closing itself out.
Has windows ever notified anyone of a solution

I think once Windows notified me of a solution (which was to update my video card driver). Most of the time you don't get a direct response, but submitting the report does give the engineers something to work with in order to try to find out what is causing the problem.
Anyway, there are about a million different things that can cause any application to return this generic error message. While you've already covered a couple of the possible solutions, there is still a ton of stuff to try. Since Photoshop is working on one computer but not the other, and knowing that Photoshop is exactly the same between both computers (assuming you are using the same version), then the question really becomes "what is different between the two computers?" Basically, shy of knowing that, we have a ton of general troubleshooting steps to give a shot at:

  • Is your problem caused by your PSU?

Welcome to the forum! If you are having a problem, this is probably the best place to come to! But BEFORE you post with your troubles, make sure first you have read the Forum Rules, and the Suggestions to Posting And Getting Better Answers stickies.
Now, the most common problems we see here in the Forums are those relating to your Power Supply Unit (PSU). That metal box with wires coming out of it is far more important than you think. Especially when it comes to upgrading a PC.
You may have had a case which came with a PSU that was fairly cheap, and the board and CPU you had previously may have run with no problems at all. But then the time comes when you want to upgrade that mobo and CPU, and thats when the problems start....
"Hi, I just upgraded to a K7N2 Delta 2 board, but when I power on the system, I cannot run the CPU at its correct FSB!"
"I just put together a system based around KM4M-V board with Athlon XP3000, but the fans spin for a second and then stop..."
"I've replaced my old Geforce 4 MX440 with a Geforce 7600GS, but there are dots and lines all over the screen"
"i installed Windows fine on this KT6 Delta board, but when I try to run any 3D games the system just completely locks up..."
A lot of people at this point have already decided that its MSI's fault, and that they make "rubbish" motherboards. But they have failed to consider the one piece of hardware that often gets overlooked...
The Power Supply Unit. The often overlooked PC hardware
    "So what do I need?"
Most modern mobos utilise two power connectors, the standard 20pin ATX connector that all boards need, and an auxiliary 4pin connector known sometimes as JPWR1 or ATX2. This connector provides a seperate 12v supply for the CPU, as most modern CPUs draw heavily on this power line.
If your power supply doesn't have this 4pin connector, then you may as well throw it away now and get a new one.
Secondly, you need to assess the specs of your PSU. There is another sticky here which warns of Q-Tec PSUs not correctly advertising their specs, which goes into more technical detail, but basically there is more to a PSU than the output given in watts, eg 300w, 420w, 550w. A good quality 380w PSU can be much better than a poor 550w one, that is why we ask you for the make of your PSU.
PSUs supply power to your system through several "rails", the most important being the 12v, 5v and 3.3v ones. The current supplied through these rails is measured in amperes (amps), and is usually listed on the sticky label on the side of the PSU, similar to the pictures shown below:
Two very different PSUs. The one on left has poor 12v rail and will cause problems. The one on right is much better![/i]
If your board has this 4pin connector, then you need a modern PSU which has an emphasis on the 12v rail, as this supplies most of the power to your CPU, graphics card, hard drive(s) and CD/DVD drives. For a basic SocketA board, such as KM4M-V, 15a should be sufficient, whereas a performance board such as KT880 or K7N2 Delta2 will need 18a or more. AMD64 boards have greater requirements, especially if you are running a dual-core CPU with two graphics cards in SLI; refer to their forums for specific advice.
If your board doesn't have a 4pin connector, such as KT3 or KT4 series, then your PSU should be a slightly older type, where the power balance favours the 3.3v and 5v rails. 12v rail on these boards is used to power motors in drives and fans, etc. As 3.3v and 5v are essentially drawn from the same source in ATX PSUs, you will never get the total output you see listed on the label together, which is why you must also consider the "Max Combined Output" of the 3.3v & 5v rails
"But it worked fine on my old system!"
Older PSUs were designed for older mobos, which mainly drew on the 5v and 3.3v rails to power the CPU and other onboard devices, leaving the 12v rail to power drive motors in HDDs, CD drives and floppy drives. As newer CPUs become more power hungry, the mobos become more reliant on a 12v supply to "feed" the CPU, so older PSUs cannot cope with extra demands.
So technically yes, your PSU may have been well able to cope with your previous hardware configuration, but now you have upgraded, it could simply be that your PSU is not able to supply correct power demands of your new mobo...
"So is my PSU any good?
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any hard set guide to what amps to look for in a PSU to power a certain mobo/CPU combination. You can browse through the forum, and there are many suggestions what to look for.
If you want to ask for help, then please avoid people asking the same questions again, and tell us the specs of your PSU: list the brand, the output in watts, and the amp ratings on the 12v, 5v and 3.3v rails. Saying you have a 420w PSU is irrelevant, as there are better quality 360w PSUs, than some cheaper 550w models. We want to see: "My PSU is a Codegen 350w (3.3v/20a, 5v/30a, 12v/12a)", not "My PSU is 500w". If you provide this information, you will get better and faster advice. Just supplying a make and model name and expecting users to search the internet to find your PSU specs is just a wee bit rude, as they are already giving up their time to help you!
How can I test if my PSU is causing the problem?
Try another better PSU. See if you can borrow one off a friend. Maybe you have another computer at home? Either way, there is no point trying a PSU that is the same or weaker than the one you already have.
Also just because a PSU works on another computer, doesn't automatically mean it will be powerful enough for yours. Don't forget, a PSU that works on a PIII system probably won't work on a new Athlon XP system.
If you do decide you want to buy a new power supply, then do all your homework first. Compare prices and specs, and look for reviews. But don't trust all reviews! Not everyone tests PSUs properly, some will rate PSUs if they have a shiny gold finish and a fancy LED, without even glancing at the performance.
When shopping for PSUs, either online or in a store, are the specs available? if not, then visit the manufacturer's website. You could spend $/£100 on a flashy PSU with six fans and rainbow LED lights () but it could be worse than yours. A good quality PSU could last you for years, and maybe another couple of upgrades. Don't spend more than you can afford, but don't skimp on the specs at all costs.
If you plan on doing more upgrades, it would pay to invest in a very good high quality PSU, that way you know it will last through your next upgrades. Buying a PSU now that just meets your requirements may cause problems if you upgrade a lot of hardware later, then your new PSU is once again not powerful enough.
"OK, so my PSU is rubbish, what do you recommend?"

Are you using a dynamic image in your report? Like an image that comes from a CLOB or BLOB in your database? If so, are you sure it is base64 encoded?
I'm having a very similar problem. I get the error when using an image bigger than 6KB (8KB after base64 encoding). It seems APEX cuts the end off of values too big for it's liking (total generated XML for the row should not exceed 32K I suppose).
The errormessages I get when using a non base64 encoded clob or an image that's bigger than 6KB are the same as yours.

  • Crystal Reports 2008 Some problems

I'm facing few problems with Crystal Reports 2008 :
    1. When you desing a reports that have its page height greater than its width the reports force you to use a Landscape even if you select portrait. this cause problem on most dotmatrix printers as they prints Landscape pages Veritically.
    2. When you design a reports with paper sise A4 and set it to Landscape you cannot drow a box or line that can be longer than the page width or even move it to the right edge or the report.
    3. When you double click on a report to open it with Crystal reports 2008 it bacame busy and you have to Switch to Crystal reports 2 or 3 times before it open the report.
    Thanks

    Hi
This is with reference to your first query:
Printing issues usually depend on the printer drivers; so would suggest you to update the driver to the latest version; For more information related to the Printer.
    http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/cr2008/en/xir3_cr_usergde_en.pdf.
The issue occurs when width(Horizontal) is greater than height(Vertical).
then it takes the page orientation as Landscape automatically however with Crystal Report Base version it gives the desired output.
Hope this informationis helful to you.

  • WE + CE cause problem with accented characters

While creating a CFF font which contains the WE as well as the CE character set, it causes problems with most of Adobe programs (Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, Photoshop Elements 2.0) under Mac OS X. Problem: the accented characters get replaced by Helvetica (Photoshop) or Myriad (Illustrator). Only InDesign treats it right.
I tested under Mac OS X 10.2 as well as 10.3; no difference. I tested on 'old machines', but fresh machines as well (machines which didn't have the fonts installed before); no difference. All the same problem.
Deleting the CE characters solves the problem, but yeah, I want to create a CFF font which contains both character sets.
Generating the font in FontLab or FDK doesn't make any difference.
So, what's the solution? Sounds like a mystery.
    Bas

    Two comments:
OpenType/CFF fonts should work to some degree on versions of Mac OS from 8.x on. "Some degree" means that pre-Mac OSX, you need ATM for them to work, and you only get the Roman char set. On Mac OSX, Unicode savvy apps will give you access to the entire charset, but at the moment only Adobe apps support any OpenType features.
About your problem with CE charset: this is a known problem, and is still a mystery. Adam Twardoch has reported the same problem and has supplied some test fonts. I have spent over a day looking over the fonts, and looking into old code, and can't find any problem in the font data. Investigating further is likely to be a several day effort, and will happen, but not soon.

  • CS5.1 extended photomerge causing problems with Win 7

    Hi all,
I just got a new computer and am trying to run my a CS5.1 trail but am running into an issue. Every time I try to run photomerge, I get an immdiate windows error message that says "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has stopped working. A Problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" The only option it gives me is to close the program. This happens if I run photomerge through bridge or through photoshop. I have no encountered this error elsewhere on photoshop yet, but I have only just installed it. I have reinstalled CS5 three times and tried rebooting windows completely with the recovery disk, but to no avail. I am running Windows 7, Quad core i7 with plenty of ram.
    Any ideas????

Reinstall CS5 by turning off AV programs(if any).
Have you seen actual evidence that an installation of Photoshop made with any particular antivirus program in force has been corrupted?
AV programs might block installations by detecting false positives, but I haven't seen anyone report that AV has corrupted their Photoshop installation, nor have I heard of one interfering with an installation without actually notifying the user, making it obvious what the problem is.
Advising people to disable their antivirus program is not good practice in general.
If an antivirus program IS interfering with the normal operation of your computer, it's time to consider getting a better quality antivirus program.

If your Internet Explorer is broken, then the same will be the case with Skype.
Try now to uninstall IE11 and let Windows to revert your Internet Explorer to the previous IE10 or IE9 version.
In order to uninstall IE11 you should go to Windows Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates -> Microsoft Windows -> Internet Explorer 11.

  • DHCP Reservation problems caused by ARP proxy?

We have been having recurring problems at three of our new school sites with printer IP addresses. We have created the address reservations in our DHCP servers (Windows Server 2012) but several times per week, the address shows up as a "BAD ADDRESS" in the DHCP leases and the printer never does get a good lease until we recreate the reservation and power cycle the printer. This is happening across several different printer models.
Because this is only happening at our new sites, I've been investigating possible reasons. The configurations are mostly identical at our new sites and old; we have 3750X's at the old sites and 3850's (and one school with 4500X's) at the new sites. We have the correct IP helpers on every VLAN - one for each of our DHCP servers and one for each ISE node. ISE doesn't respond to the DHCP requests, it only listens for them to profile the endpoints. I've also begun enforcing ISE at one of the sites to see if it was just related to IP conflicts - no luck so far.
Today I was fixing a printer reservation and came across something interesting. At one of the new schools, the MDF ARP table reported that 10.24.12.20 was assigned to a workstation (it is supposed to be assigned to a printer).  When I ran a check on the port in the IDF associated with that IP address to find the IP that was associated with the device, the device had an IP of 10.24.12.26. This caused me to start looking for ARP problems.
I went looking for a difference in the configs on the 3850's and the 4500X's compared to the 3750X's at the older sites. Here's what I found when I did a "sh run all":
    4500X:
    ip arp poll queue 1000
    ip arp poll rate 1000
    no ip arp proxy disable
    ip arp gleaning tftp
    ip arp gleaning udp
    ip arp incomplete retry 20
    ip arp incomplete entries 5000
    ip arp incomplete enable
ip arp inspection log-buffer entries 32
ip arp inspection log-buffer logs 5 interval 1
    ip sticky-arp
    no ip gratuitous-arps
The 3750X only has the following ARP commands:
    ip sticky-arpno ip gratuitous-arps
ip arp inspection log-buffer entries 32ip arp inspection log-buffer logs 5 interval 1
I was looking in particular at the "no ip arp proxy disable" on the 4500 and 3850's. I'm wondering if the newer switches are working as ARP proxies and causing problems with the printers. It doesn't seem that the 3750X's or older are doing this, or even have the commands. I am headed down the wrong path here? What are the repercussions of disabling the arp proxy on the newer switches to test it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
if you have proxy arp then you should see multiple IP mapped to same MAC( the one from the device with proxy arp enabled), is this the case ?

  • Firefox causing problems with web pages and Yahoo

Firefox has been causing problems with:
    Yahoo: no matter how many times I reset the font size, it is always much bigger. Also the "From" box (where my name and email address appear) has shrunk;
This does not happen in Chrome
A particular website has suddenly stopped working: http://explore.org/#!/live-cams/player/kitten-rescue-cam
Instead of seeing what is going on on the live cam, all I get is a green screen.
This does not happen in Chrome.
I have followed all the instructions:
    - Reset Firefox
    - Disabled and re-enabled add-ons
And yet this has solved nothing. Iam now having to run both Firefox and Chrome at the same time. This is highly frustrating. I like Firefox better than Chrome but problems are mounting up and I do need help.
Has any one got some idea what is going on?
    Many thanks...
    Anna

    Hi
Thank you for your input. I did try Font size, reset, zoom... the lot and nopes it did nothing. As I said the problem is in Firefox, not in Chrome.
I also checked the plug-ins issue and it seems they are in order and up to date.
Now this morning, the website has been working again in Firefox (was working ok in Chrome).
Overall Firefox's performance with some websites is poor. My health report confirms the number of times it crushes (many times a day, which is highly frustrating). I am keen to keep Firefox as it is so mcuh nicer in many ways than Chrome but it's performance is an issue for me... sigh...

  • Firmware Update 1.7 drains battery and causes problems for sound

I have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with a SSD. After installing Firmware 1.7 I saw the beach ball over and over even after rebooting... this problem got resolved after I plugged in power cable and is now gone even when it is running on battery. But the sound of my MBP goes randomly on/off when I plug in/out my headphones and the worst problem is that prior to the 1.7 I got up to 5 hours of battery but now only 2:30 hours. I've only 470 cycles of my battery. Resseting the SMC didn't help and unfortuaneltly there is no way of downgrading the firmware. What should I do?? This is definietly a firmware problem which supposedly was released to solve a rare battery problem on some machines not to cause problems on others.

I am seeing this problem as well.
Before the SMC Update 1.7 the battery was fine. After, it hibernated within a half hour of use on battery. Upon wake-up the Service Battery warning is in the battery menu, and the time remaining calculation has gone from several hours at a full charge to less than 10 minutes.
My battery is original MacBookPro8,2; I rarely work on battery, relying on it mostly to keep my computer going while asleep during a half hour commute to/from work. System Information's Power tab reports
    Cycle Count:          19
I plan to try a battery calibration soon; if that fails, then the Apple Store.

  • Null values from DB2 cause problems

    Hi,
I have another problem with database link to DB2 using IBM iSeries Access for Linux on 64 bit OEL5 with Oracle Database gateway and unixODBC 2.2.14.
DB link works. However, null values from DB2 cause problems. Date columns that are null on db2 return a date '30.11.0002', and character columns that are null return an error ORA-28528: Heterogeneous Services datatype conversion error.
    isql returns correct results.
How can i fix this? Perhaps set some parameters for data conversion on the gateway?
    Thank you.

If the driver is not fully ODBC level 3 compliant and misses functions, we're lost. But sometimes the drivers are ODBC level 3 compliant but miss the correct 64bit implementation. In those cases we can tell the gateway to use the 32bit ODBC level 3 standard by setting in the gateway init file:

I installed ReloadEvery a while ago and it seemed to be working fine however I am now having problems with FF crashing and weird things like pages not reloading and not being able to use the back button etc
I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF and upgrading to FF 4.
When I upgraded to FF 4 I was still having problems even though I didn't have any Extensions installed at all, or so I thought. I noticed that ReloadEvery was still installed. I was rather puzzled as I had done a clean install of FF 4. I want to remove ReloadEvery to see if it will solve my problems.
I have also tried following the help on the FF Troubleshooting about manually uninstalling Extensions but again ReloadEvery not listed there yet I am still able to use it in FF!
I want to get rid of it!! I really need some help please.
