Reproducable PNG Save Crash (CS2)

PhotoShop fails to save PNG image - subsequent attempts to save write 0 byte files without error message. This has reproduced on two unrelated machines so far (it was reported to me by a friend, I tried his image, confirmed it, then tried to come up with a minimal reproduction.) This is pretty straightforward - create a blank image, 8-bit indexed color or greyscale at 800x992 pixels, then save as non-interlaced PNG.
I'd be interested to know if it reproduces for anyone else (or if there is a known fix, I didn't see one when I searched).
Steps to reproduce:
-Start PhotoShop (CS2 version 9.0.2 here)
-File->New
-Set a resolution of 800x992 (this seems to matter!)
-ColorMode grayscale (can do this now, or load or convert any picture to grayscale or 256 colors at exactly 800x992 pixels canvas size)
-Hit okay
-File->Save As...
-Select type PNG (any filename)
-Click Save
-Select None for Interlace (does not crash on Interlaced mode)
-Click Ok
-Get "Could not save as [file] because of a program error. (As a secondary bug, if the filename is long enough this message is cut off.)
-Any further attempt to save PNG results in a zero-byte file, no error message.
The easy workaround is to save as Interlaced, but it's still pretty bad since it hobbles the program till you restart it.
A debug monitor shows a bad pointer dereference related to the PNG plugin:

>You could try (but personally i don't see it helping, but always good to be uptodate when this sort of thing happens) installing service pack 3 and then
Ah, I didn't pay enough attention when I answered that part -- I'm on SP3, my friend's machine is SP2.
>Some other questions to add to do abit of further testing with cs4 on XP:
>1. does you document have image data in it or does it stil work if it is just blank?
Nope, fails just fine blank, I was able to get reproducability down to the exact steps I listed above. I tested various other sizes (but I did not test other widths or other multiples of the height count). For example, 991 lines or 993 lines work fine, as does saving with interlace on.
>2. what resolution is you image set to? is it the defualt 72?
Totally default - I only touched the values listed in my reproducability steps. It doesn't seem to matter when I try it here what res I use, which makes sense since it's only a field in the PNG header. To verify, I tried just now at both 10dpi, 72dpi, and 140dpi.
>3. What colour profile is the image using? is it the default sRGB IEC61966-2.1
When you set the image to grayscale for color mode, sRGB isn't an option for color profile. However, if I create an RGB image using that profile, then use Image->Mode->Indexed Color to reduce it to 256 colors with a uniform palette (palette doesn't seem to matter), then save that, it will still crash. It does NOT crash when saving RGB mode, only 8-bit.
>4. what aspect ratio is it using? Square Pixels, yes?
Yes. In testing, it doesn't appear to matter.
Thanks for the ideas! Probably the fact that we are working with 256-color images is the biggest reason it's never been seen, that's probably not as common. The resolution requirement is strange, I've verified that it's not because it's a multiple of 8, 16, or 32. Seems we hit that number just purely by accident.

  • Adobe Assets: PSD export to image(PNG, JPG) crashes webpage

Firstly it is great that Adobe Assets was released so that it would be possible to view PSD files.
Have a PSD file opened in Adobe Assets on Google Chrome(Linux). I am trying to use the option of exporting the PSD to an image format, but the Actions -> Download -> PNG/JPG crashes the webpage.
Any workaround other than using Adobe Photoshop? I guess I can ask the creator of the PSD to export it.

I set up Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS using the iso image from here Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (Trusty Tahr). Using either Chrome or Firefox I am able to download both a png and jpg image of a psd file from the private file one-up page.
First steps to try are rebooting the machine, and clearing all cache / cookies from the browser.
Next thing to try is to choose Actions > Download and from the Chrome Dev Tools for the download you should see:

  • I need to save crash logs locally for analysis, and not send to Mozilla

I would like to find a way to save crash logs locally, and not have them sent to Mozilla. Is this possible?

Is there a reason you don't want to send them to Mozilla? There is no personally identifiable information in the logs, and they are incredibly helpful in diagnosing crashes. There is a way you can generate crash dumps locally, but it's not nearly as easy as sending them to our servers to processing and then reading the logs there.
Also, update to the latest version of Firefox (21)

  • CS4 Save Crashes

From PPro CS4 all Save types, whether Save As, Save Copy, Auto-Save, crashes CS4 and sends a report to Adobe. Not even changes to Preferences, or Project Panel column configurations are remembered, or file locations.

Thanks - I'm learning how to use this forum. Here's what I thought I had sent:
Here's a typical application error record in the event viewer log:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 11.0.1.0, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0001d7e6.
    Does this tell us anything?
    and (for the second post):
In the event viewer log, I also found the entry below, before I installed the Photoshop update:
The application, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 01/31/2010 @ 22:44:40.921 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 7756BB9B (ole32!CoWaitForMultipleHandles)
The above entry came about 20 seconds after this application error record:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0008bb9b.
The faulting module ole32.dll seems common to all the photoshop application error messages. Is this a clue?

  • Using Lightroom 5 as stand alone to convert RAW, then save to CS2?

I am a professional photographer, and I am perfectly happy with my CS2 version of Photoshop, as I can get it to do everything I need, without spending another $600 on the newest version.
Unfortunately the new camera I purchased needs either CS6, or Lightroom 4-5 to process the RAW files.  Can I simply purchase Lightroom and use it as a stand alone product, then save the file as a tiff to further work on it in my CS2?

Yes, you can do that. You can designate Photoshop CS2 as your external editor. When you choose to edit in Photoshop you will receive a warning that camera raw is out of date, and you can choose to render a copy with Lightroom adjustments. You can configure Lightroom so that the copy will either be a PSD or TIF image. I think most people prefer TIF. Then you can instruct Lightroom not to show that option anymore. From that point forward any time you choose to edit in Photoshop Lightroom will create the TIF image and pass it on. When you save the changes in Photoshop those changes will be reflected in the TIF image that is in the Lightroom catalog.

  • Screen Saver crashing my Java Web Start app

I've written a Java Web Start time tracker application that all employees run from the time they start work until they leave at the end of the day. The only problem is that there are a couple of people who from time to time find that the application has crashed when they unlock their Windows screen saver. The application window continues to show the screen saver image and the title bar says "Not Responding". In an attempt to get some clues, I had one person keep the java console running - but nothing new appears in the console.
I've personally tried crashing the app by using screen savers, but I cannot duplicate the problem. I've also tried letting my computer go into standby mode and I've let it hibernate. But every time, the application continues running as soon as I log back in.
Any ideas as to why the screen saver could trigger a problem like this for some users?

    >
I've written a Java Web Start ... . The only problem is that there are a couple of people who from time to time find that the application has crashed when they unlock their Windows screen saver. >What screensaver(s)? Some important distinctions might be
    - Windows standard savers (the savers supplied with the OS, if so, do they all use Open-GL or all use...?)
    - Windows compatible, 3rd party savers.
    - Saverbeans screensavers (Java based). E.G. <https://screensavers.dev.java.net/>

  • Streaming Album Cover Screen-Saver crash AND Fix

I suffered from an ATV stutter/freeze and crash whenever I tried to stream music and use Album Cover Art as the screen-saver.
I tried a small, no LARGE experiment (over 35,000 songs) in iTunes. I had *a lot* of Exotica and Space Age Pop from out of print lps and I used to save full scans of the front and back covers in each song. Some were over 1800 pixels in size, adding a couple of MGs to each song! This wasn't an issue with drive space or my current iMac/iTunes for me.
I resized any album art over 600 -700 pixels. If the art was over this size, I used a script to export the art to a 600 x 600 pixel jpg and re-embedded them in the album.
Now I can happily stream, use other macs and still have stutter-free art work on the HD TV. I'm convinced now as some others here, that the ATV is just not powerful enough to push through a graphics intensive task while playing music. Right now as I type, I'm listening to internet radio, my partner is surfing on the other mac AND the screen-saver is displaying my Album Art in all its glory. This was impossible last week. No wonder ATV doesn't offer a visualizer.
    A

A valuable observation Al, I also conducted some simple experiments and found that setting the time taken for the screensaver to kick in for longer resolved the issues with poor response when using the album art as a screensaver.
Perhaps you might share your script so that others might try your diagnosis.

  • Tecra A9 - Power Saver crashes - fatal error has occured code: 0x2

    Hi,
today, when I switched on my computer the power saver began to crash.
I restarted the computer several times and the result always is - A fatal error has occured. This program will be terminated. code: 0x2.
This error pops out even when I try to reinstall the application.
May be this has something to do with the service pack 3 I installed couple a days ago.
    Anyone has an idea ?
    Martin Vassilev.

I saw this error long time ago with WXP. In my opinion it has nothing to do with SP3.
My experience says you will not be able to fix this. There is something wrong in registry entries and reinstallation will not help at all.
Only one method can help, the most radical one, new OS installation using recovery media.

  • WTF? Can't get jpg to save from CS2 (export from Lightroom)

Okay, have made an extensive search through help and FAQ files, and find some similar problems to mine, but nothing exact.
I am using Adobe Lightroom 2, but have the same problem with Lightroom 3 Beta (am using Windows 7)
I do my photo PP in Lightroom, usually export as a JPG, then upload to Flickr....No problem there......
Recently I have been doing some touch up work in CS2 (v9).  Problem: I bring the LR export JPG into CS2 so I can do my thing, and then try to save using the standard "Save as" function so I can upload to Flickr.   I get the following CS2 error: " Could Not Complete your Request because of a Program Error".  As a workaround I tried using the "Save for Web" function, but as everyone is aware that strips out all the EXIF data (something I want to maintain).  I also tried the "Edit in photoshop" LR function, Doing my CS2 stuff, and then saving the TIFF to a JPG from CS2, resulting in same error.
I am sure that I am performing some kind of stupid mistake, have an incompatable export setting, or not following the proper workflow process  for LR>CS2>JPG Editing.  I am a humble person, so please kick me in the butt, tell me what I am doing wrong so I can continue with my work!!!
Any help would be appreciated, oh masters of all things Adobe !!!
    DannagMonkey

    Hi,
I dont know if this will help but this is how I do it. Set up Ps as your external editor. I think you said you had done this. From Lr use edit in Ps command. It opens the image in Ps. Do your work and then press "save", not save as. This returns the tiff or psd ( you decide in Lr preferences ) to Lr. You can then export as jpg to flickr. Hope this works for you.

  • Animation won't save in CS2

I have photoshop cs2 and I have had it for a while now :)
I did a lot of animation in p7 when I had it but then my company upgraded my photoshop to cs2.
I have looked at EVERY freakin tutorial under the sun and it tells me to save it as a .gif file under the SAVE FOR WEB part. I have tried that. I have tried saving it in ImageReady like I did in p7. I have tried EVERYTHING but for some reason, it won't save my animation. It flattens it and saves only the first slide of it.
Its driving me crazy and I have missed a good 3 deadlines because of it and I seriously get a migraine from trying to figure this out...
Maybe its just one little thing I missed or a button or SOMETHING but if any one has similar issues or something please help me. Its only on my work computer. I don't have cs2 at home I only have p7 but I can't take my work home any more so I feel totally screwed!!

I'm not sure what you are actually doing. Saving animated files in ImageReady should definitely work. Do you see the individual frames as separate layers in Photoshop CS2? Do the changes show up in the Animation palette in IR?

  • System Preferences- Desktop/Screen saver- crash EVERY TIME

    Hi-
I have a brand new iMAc 24" with Leopard and all software is up to date via update as of 12 hours ago (10.5.1 etc). I have office 2004 and photoshop/illustrator but NO other software loaded. The computer is now 7 days old. Yesterday I used system preferences to change my desktop picture to something from my iPhoto library, as per normal with 10.5.1 I got one picture up and then went to change it and now EVERY TIME I try to change anything in the desktop/screen saver system preferences the application dies. I can get the desktop/screen saver page to open but as soon as I click any conceivable option on that window the system preferences application dies. I have sent about 7 crash reports to apple and see that others are describing similar (not identical) problems. Is apple going to fix this? I DID not install leopard on this computer, its BRAND NEW. The only thing I have done is to update whatever apple told me was available. HELP...

My computer was a month old when I installed Leopard (which turned out to be an adventure....), and once I finally got a proper install one of the features I explored was Desktop and Screensaver, specifically I tried the new mosaic option in the Screensaver for pictures, it seemed to work. The 10.5.1 update came out, a bit later I tried that Screensaver option again and not only did it not work, but it crashed System Prefs. I ended up trashing every plist and cache file having to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and iphotomosaic in my home ~/Library folder. Oh, and in searching for them they managed to crash the Finder too. So take a look thru ~/Library, especially Preferences, be sure to also look in the ByHost folder, and you might also check the Caches folder. Remove all files you can find that have to do with System Prefs, Screensaver, and Desktop. Once I did that all was fine again with my System Prefs. The mosaic option even started working again.

  • How to make a GIF and PNG save with the same colors.

I seem to get a slight shift in colors when saving a PNG. I save as png24 in photoshop then save as png6 in fireworks (to get degradeable alpha transparency), eg. please see logo for molecule clothing compared to background (only shows on some monitors).
    Thanks for any pointers.

You don't note where you see the problems (which browsers, which situations) so I'm guessing it involves PNG gamma.
