Request - Let me change a "signed" document

We're using Acrobat 9 Pro.  Unlike all previous versions that I can remember, once a document is digitally signed it is now impossible (?) to delete pages, delete or clear the signatures etc. even on unprotected documents.
This is a major annoyance and makes no sense.  Certainly if I make any change then I expect all existing signatures to be marked "invalid" - but at least let me make the change!  Once a document has gone through all reviews the content is valuable, and not being able to reuse it is maddening.
==>  So, please put this capability back in.  Let me delete signatures, pages or make any other changes to unprotected / unsecured documents, whether or not they have been signed.

Why not keep an unsigned copy of the file? Or just clear the signatures on a copy of the signed file?

  • My Firewall is not letting me change permissions, and documents with .501 and .503 extensions are getting created related to Device Discovery and Image Capture!

I have good reason to believe my system has been compromised. Just a few minutes ago I went into the "System & Security" from the "Preferences" and I just happened to click on my firewall settings and in the window in which users can "allow" or "block" certain actions I saw a permission for screen sharing green and allowed, [shown in the picture below] and I tried many times to click on it and press the minus sign or change the permission from green to yellow or red and simply block it, but it appears to be frozen or locked and I cannot even select it. I'm on the administrator account so it's not a matter of user account. Clicking on it doesn't do anything. Having said that I can check and select the "Stealth Mode" and "Block All incoming Connections"... but why am I not able to select that Screen Sharing and what is it? [Image below]
I also spotted 2 strange looking docs created in my Library/Caches folder, file name: com.apple.ImageCaptureNotifications.DeviceDiscoveryDatabase.501 and com.apple.ImageCaptureNotifications.DeviceDiscoveryDatabase.503  [Image below]
In Finder, on the sidebar, next to the "Computer" icon under the devices, the title "Computer" itself has disappeared, and it's basicly blank and empty in front of the "Computer" Icon, it works and takes me to "Macintosh HD" when I click on it, but the writings have disappeared... [Image below]

I changed my AppleID a long time ago to an email that I no longer use and I have updates for apps that I can't update because my old email is filled in to where i sign in and it wont let me change it to my new one???

The problem with those two apps is that they are supposed to be in your Apple ID and you didn't set up the Mac properly/completely when you got it.
You might try deleteing them and using OS X Recovery to install them again.

After that, before you open any iLife apps go to your Mac App Store account, to the Purchased pane and Accept them into your account.

If the old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

That's because the Mac, OS X and the iLife apps that came preinstalled on the Mac all belong to the previous owner. The previous owner needs to call Apple care and have their Apple ID disassociated from the Mac. Then the hard drive needs to be totally erased and OS X and the iLife apps reinstalled using OS X Recovery.

  • Signing digitally changes fonts in document when saved

I have just been sent a couple of document to sign - something I have done many times in the past few weeks.
When I save these documents after signing them - much of the  text in the documents changes to something difficult to read (I suspect it may be courier).
This seems like a serious error to me as a lot of the point of digital signatures is that you sign and return a document that you can't otherwise have made  changes to.
Is there anything I can do to stop this happening?
I'm using Acrobat Reader 10.1.9 on Mac OSX 10.9.2 (Mavericks). The documents were created on a PC.
I've attached a limited screen shot - although the document is fairly confidential so I can't upload most of it.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my question was posted so long ago that I no longer have access to the documents. I printed and signed paper copies and deleted them. So the problem has gone away for me. However, I DO think this is a very serious issue.
I am a bit rusty now but I used to work a lot with Postscript and PDF. In my day, you could only realistically modify the content of a pdf document by appending new content to the file and then appending  a new index. That ensured that, although the visual appearance changed, the underlying electronic document did not and even deleted items were still present - just no longer indexed and hence not displayed. That was a great system as it maintained an audit trail. I  assumed that was how signatures worked which is why I was surprised to see the symptom I sent you.
I fully understand all you say about font substitution and multi-master fonts but I fail to see why it is relevant. If adding a signature is coded in a “well behaved” manner, adding it could not affect the rest of the document - including embedded or non embedded fonts. If it is not coded in that way, and some sort of active editing of the original content is going on, I am concerned that the legality of signed documents is seriously compromised as, if you can modify one bit of the original to add a signature you can edit any other bit of the document and subtly change it’s meaning WITHOUT AN AUDIT TRAIL. If that is what is happening, I for one would be wary of accepting important documents as signed PDFs instead of paper documents without thoroughly scrutinising the whole thing to see if any subtle changes have been introduced.
    All the best
    Dave

  • Update 9.1.2 breaks digital signing documents in Adobe 9 Pro on Windows XP

I am able to digitally sign documents using an Aladdin eToken Pro 64k with a fresh copy of Adobe 9 Pro for Windows. However when I update to version 9.1.2 digital signing fails with an "error encountered while BER decoding". Signing still works on Vista and Adobe 9.1.2 Pro. I've checked to make sure none of the settings relating to digital signing changed during the update and none have. Anyone have any ideas on how to correct the problem?

    Hi Nick,
First up, there was a small error in my previous post. I said the version of Acrobat (and whenever I say Acrobat I really mean both Acrobat and Reader, but I'm too lazy to type both) that was modified to fix the bug in SHA-1 fallback was 9.1.3, but I really meant 9.3.  Sorry about that.
I saw your post from yesterday (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/563601) where you broached the BER decoding error, but in the post above you said signature creation isn't failing any more, so hopefully some update has fixed the problem.
Here's a little bit about the BER Decoding error. During the signing process Acrobat writes the entire file to disk (which is why you always get the Save As dialog as part of the signing process) in the signed state with everything but the actual signature. However, it does leave a hole in the file where the BER encoded cryptographic data will reside once it's be computed and formatted. One thing that is created before the actual signature is the signature appearance. The signature appearance in the form field isn't really the signature proper, but just a graphic representation of the actual signature. The reason that the signature appearance is written to disk before the signature is created is because it too is part of the signed data and must exist before the actual signature is created.
In a perfect world, after the file is written to disk, the cryptographic signature is created and written into the hole in the PDF file, and the signing process completes without any problem. However, if we get to the point that the file has been written out, but during the actual signature creation the process fails, that hole I mentioned isn't filled in. It's not really a hole per se, but a block of zeros that act as a placeholder for the BER encoded data.  Because there was some sort of failure and Acrobat didn't get the signed data back from the hardware device what you end up with is a PDF file with a signature appearance, but no real signature in the file. When you click on the signature field Acrobat tries to validate the actual signature, it finds the block of zeros where the signed data was supposed to be, it tries to decode the zeros and gets (as you might well imagine) nothing back and displays the BER Decoding error.
Let leaves us with why didn't Acrobat get the signed data back. When using hardware devices, such as tokens or smart cards, the actual cryptographic signing (the encryption of of the digest with the users private key) takes place on the device. Acrobat (nor any other application) doesn't have access to the private key, which is what makes hardware devices more secure. It's up to the device to sign the data and send it back. If there is any kind of breakdown in that communication channel (which I mentioned in my previous post) the signature creation doesn't reach fruition and you're left with an unsigned file that looks like it was signed because there is a signature appearance.
This is a case where we are providing technically correct, and utterly useless information. It's true that we can't decode a bunch of zeros, but what we should be telling the user is there is no signature (it's kind of like the Matrix where there is no spoon ).
I hope this helps explain what you're seeing. If the the signing process breaks down again please make sure you are using the latest version of Acrobat/Reader and the token software is up-to-date.  If everything is current and the problem returns please let me know.

  • Modifying a Signed Document via its Metadata

This is a good one for all of you out there. We all know that if you make a modification to any Office document that has been digitally signed, you end up removing all signatures in it because the file has been altered. However, we have a scenario, where
content in our Word documents are imported out of a SharePoint list. For exemple, we have a form that will initiate a new Staffing request with our HR department. The information related to the linguistic profile of the position to staff is extracted out of
    another SharePoint list.
If someone was to sign the document, and then go and alter the linguistic profile value in the associated list, the new value would show up in the signed document, preserving the digital signature. This gives the impression to our end-users that people are
able to alter Office Documents that have been signed, and is making them loose faith in the platform. I am looking for advise or recommendations on how to best approach this issue to ensure people cannot altered external data that is being used by signed documents,
or for a way to have the digital signature removed if the data is ever modified.

Is there an Action Wizard to automate this? I have partners that chance the file name,  what I would like to have happen is the orginal file name becomes the title, so if the file name gets changed the title remains the same.

  • Deletion Request letter

Good afternoon, I am trying to close on a home loan and because Comcast sent a collection account to my credit report I'm unable to do so until I get a deletion request letter from comcast for a rapid rescore. I obtained Comcast services back in December of 2014 and signed up for the two year contract, 25 days later I decided that I did not want the two year contract and I called them to request the change. All my services and equipment remained the same. In June of this year I noticed the collection account showing in my credit report. After contacting Comcast they figured out that they had created a new account number when I made the change and the balance of $142 was from the first account. They assumed responsibility for the error, I paid the balance and told me they would send the deletion request to the collection agency and expedite it whithin 5 days.  I has been over 38 days now and I have called numerous times, they have given me five (5) different escalation ticket numbers but nobody seems to be able to provide me with that letter. The house that I'm trying to buy is new construction and I have put over $9,000 for down payment now that I will lose if I can't close the deal. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you in advance for your help.

First thing you should do is dispute it with the credit bureaus. That's probably the most expedient way to get it off your credit report. I've also asked someone from Comcast to help you with this. You should hear from them soon. Good luck!

my icloud account on my new iphone does not match the user ID for itunes as it is an old apple ID. There is no password for this ID so I cant change it and it wont let me change the apple ID. Any help?

To change to iCloud ID on your phone you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID then sign in with the new ID.  If you don't know the password for the old ID, and if the old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

    Thanks

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store alert. For example, the App Store may prompt you to update "Angry Birds" or "Twitter," but the hacked app may be something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you must carry out a systematic search with Spotlight.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    2. In the Finder, press command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu of search criteria, initially showing Kind. From that menu, select
    Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select
    Raw Query
as the criterion, then click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of the menu of search criteria. That's where you enter the raw search query. Click in that box and paste the text you copied earlier by pressing command-V.
    4. The search window will now show all the App Store products that are installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the apps in the Spotlight search results is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash, after quitting it if it's running. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Quit and relaunch the App Store. Test.
If you find these instructions confusing, ask for an alternative method.
