    Perhaps.
    •  If you have not already done so, restart Mac and
try again.  If the iSight still does not work, continue.
    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (be certain that you
use the correct PMU/SMC "reset" procedure for your
Mac model), yours may be a hardware problem
that will require a professional fix.
    • Test more than one Apple app in more than one
user account.  If the problem persists with all,
Unless you have a current backup, make one now.
Then use the final "Troubleshooting" suggestion:
"... contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service."
    • If you want to try one more thing on your own first,
use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then
download and apply the latest Combo Update for
your OS.  Currently, the latest SL Combo is here:
        http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of iSight so see your AASP if the Troubleshooting suggestions don't work.

  • I NEED TO RESET PMU & RESET PRAM...HOW??

hello all...i was on the phone with applecare and i was told i have to reset pmu and rest pram...somehow last night i lost safari, deleted it, and tryed to download again and when i tryed it said "you can not install safari 1.2 on this volume. This system can not use this software"...i am new to apple so i have no idea what i'm doing..anyones help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    thanks!

    Hi,
Safari 1.2 is for OS X 10.3 (the previous version of the operating system according to your profile). If you are using 10.4.2, try installing the 10.4.2 combo update which should re-update your Safari to the correct version.

  • Blue screen, reset pmu, booted up, now no cursor

hello all...i have received a ibook g4 with some issues. i rebooted it, terminal blue screen, decided to reset pmu, came up after power up, and now no cursor. i tried to plug in a mouse. still nothing! any ideas? just trying to get the ibook back up to get the hard drive emptied off. thanks in advance.

    Hi.
Two things to try for starters:
First , try a Starting up in Safe Mode
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode.
    Then re-boot normally.
If the above doesn't fix things so that you can "...get the ibook back up to get the hard drive emptied off" try booting into Target Disk Mode by holding the 'T' key down at start-up and connect it to your Pro with a firewire cable. The iBook's HD should show on the Pro. Run DU from the Pro to erase the iBook's HD. Use the zero out option (once will be enough) to map out any bad blocks. If you are re-installing you can run the install from the Pro too while the iBook is still in TDM.
    Have fun,
    Adrian

  • Reset PMU Xserve

Got an XServe intel version. Trying to reset the PMU as the fans have gone crazy. Had an engineer look at it, given the all clear but the instructions we've found are not at all clear and don't actually make sense.
*+1. In order to enter the headless command mode, hold the identifier button while you power the Xserve on.+*
*+2. Keep pressing the identifier until you see the top row of blue lights on the Xserve blinking.+*
*+3. Stop pressing the identifier button. You'll notice that the right-most blue LED on the bottom row is lit up - this indicates that the system will start from the system disk.+*
*+4. At this point you can press the system identifier button in order to cycle through the boot options. They are as follows (right to left)+*
    *+- System Disk+*
    *+- Network Boot+*
    *+- Start from leftmost drive+*
*+- Boot next disk (other than startup disk)+*
    *+- Target Boot Mode+*
    *+- Reset PMU+*
*+5. Release the button once again and the system will boot into your desired mode.+*
We can get it to the 4th step and light up the PMU reset light but we would have already released the button to select that option! It then just sists there and doesn't reboot. If you power down and restart it starts normally again!
Any ideas? (Can't reset on MB as we can't access the server without serious surgery in the cabinet, it's not on rails)
    Thanks.

    Hey Ken,
If you are looking to reset the pram or nvram you can do so with sever monitor on a remote machine.
In server monitor you can click on the restart button and then select "on the next restart" Reset NVRAM and then select the first bootable drive.
It sounds more the like the system management controller is what you are looking for though as it controls the fans.
    Follow these instructions for tha
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Reset PMU worked.... but....

The screen has darkened again. I will try resetting PMU again, however, I am concerned that at some point this won't work.
How do I determine the cause of my monitor going dark (hard drive is running but monitor remains dark)? This computer suits our needs just fine, so I'd like to keep it going as long as possible.
If fixing is cost-prohibitive, can we hook it up to an external monitor?

Unfortunately the troubleshooting in the Apple Service Manual is basically willy-nilly board changing until it works. I don't even think Apple is sure what the cause is and I believe the problems and expense of fixing was a driving factor for the iMac G5 not having such a complex neck arrangement.
You can connect an external display.
For a 700/800MHz iMac you can connect a VGA display of either 1024x768 (15" iMac G4 models) or 1440x900 (17" iMac G4 models) other resolution displays are not recommended as Apple crippled the video card.
For a 1GHz, 1.25GHz iMac you can connect either a VGA display or any video device (like a TV) via S-Video or Composite Video. Again 15" iMacs should have 1024x768 external display, 17" iMac G4s a 1440x900 external display or 20" iMac G4s a 1680x1050 external display.
There is a hack to remove Apple's deliberate crippling of the graphics, but it is risky (although I've never heard of a failure). This would allow an external display of pretty much any resolution up to about 23"/24" models.
    iMac G4 (Flat Panel) 1GHz/1.25GHz:
    Mini VGA - VGA
    Mini VGA - Composite/S-Video
iMac G4 (Flat Panel) 700/800MHz models:

  • Reset PMU... mouse still stuck..now what?

    Hi,
I fixed logic board problem and graphics
Tried to fix mouse by resetting PMU
Now the computer (when you start it) grey screen with apple comes up and locks when the whell at the bottom comes up. Any suggestions?

I'm wondering if you inadvertently disconnected the trackpad somehow? Is it still not working? If it isn't, here is a link to Michael Baker's detailed instructions on how to reconnect it (in case that is the problem):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1034519#1034519
Does it work okay with a USB mouse?
Will it start up from the Panther Install CD by putting the Install CD into the tray and holding down the c key at the end of the startup chime? If so, then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.

My mac mini only shows a steady power light and fan noise when powered up. No video or sound and no commumication with wired keyboard or optical mouse. Tried replacing internal battery and resetting PMU/SMC but nothing seemed to happen.  Any suggestions? Many thanks! Richard

You've already done the two things I would have suggested.
If your Mini has an internal battery then I assume it's a G4. That means you've gotten a lot of good years of service from it, and it's old enough that it's certainly not covered by AppleCare anymore, and it's probably not worth spending money trying to repair it.
You should be able to tear it apart using instructions from ifixit.com to get the hard drive out, and then put the hard drive into a nice USB or FireWire enclosure (I like the ones from Other World Computing, macsales.com) so you can transfer your data to a replacement Mac.
I hope someone has another suggestion for you.

  • Resetting PMU, PRAM, etc when installing new RAM?

    Dear Forum,
I've just ordered Kingston DDR SDRAM - KTA-G5400/2G 2GB PC3200 Kit - for my G5 Dual. My machine has 8 slots. This new RAM will occupy slots 4 and 5. I've checked that this is definitely the correct RAM for my machine.
I've read what Samara and Japamac have to say about resetting PMU,PRAM, and NVRAM.
Can you elaborate on this please? Where is the reset button located for my G5 Dual Processor? Is the reset performed before or after the installation of new RAM? The .pdf RAM installation manual (downloaded from this forum)does not mention any necessity to perform a reset, and does not identify the location of any button either?

Go to System Preference control panel Startup Disk and set it.
I'd use Option key to look for your boot drive first time anyway.

  • After I reset PMU, my power light turns on ... but nothing else

My computer was shutting down today intermittently
actually it has been doing this for a month now, on and off
so today I opened it up and thought I was doing the right thing by pushing that reset PMU button
but now when I plug it back in
the power light is bright but wont do anything else
even when I hold it down
it wont power off like it should
    any thoughts here ?

That button should be pressed as part of procedure in these two documents.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1436
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939
There are two because I don't know which model Power Mac G5 you have. If you have the earlier model and did not unplug everything when you pressed the button last time, I think that is an important part of the procedure. Since you already pressed the button once, you may want to use the alternate method of disconnecting everything and leaving it unpowered for a few minutes before reconnecting. When you reconnect the power, initially connect just the keyboard and mouse (leave the other peripherals off) when you try to start it up.

  • WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY--RESET PMU

Here is the deal with my Powerbook. I have been connecting to my wireless Linksys router no problem for 3 months or more. All of a sudden one day it says I have excellent signal and am connected to the network, but it cannot connect to the internet via Safari, Firefox, or IE.
I tried many things and finally stumbled across a site telling me to reset the PMU (take battery out, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, put battery back in and reboot). Every time I do this it connects perfectly to the internet. However, if I let it go to sleep mode or even close the book for 5 minutes I must reset the PMU again before I can connect.
I have very little knowledge of anythign other than a PC running on Windows. Can someone please tell me WHY I have to do this, what it is doing, and how I can fix this problem because these macs cost WAY too much money for problems like this with no support from Apple (without paying extra).

I got my new battery but still no help. I have reset my modem/router a hundred times but the computer still doesn't work properly. I always have to take the battery out, push the power button for 5 seconds and reinstall the battery before it will connect to the internet.
I also have another question that I am sure many others are wondering as well. Why is it that Mac gets away with such horrible support? There are MANY people out here having the exact same problems with everything from iPods to PowerBooks yet nothing is done to help. You basically have to pay a lot of money before the support people will even talk to you. I have a suggestion... you charge an outrageous amount of money for your products, how about supporting them! Recognize the problems and fix thema nd then tell everyone else how to fix them!
Mac's new commercial should go as follows:
Hi, I'm a mac. Sure, I may be more secure than a PC and may have some cool little programs like iPhoto and Garage Band, but none of this means Sh*t if you can't get on your computer because you are one of the thousands of people experiencing the same stupid problem. And guess what? You nore any of your friends know enough about Mac's to troubleshoot your own problem. However, if you have a problem with your PC, 9 out of 10 people can help you fix the issue. But I've already told you too much. Please pay me another $50 and I will tell you slightly more.

  • Reset PMU after removing battery

Is there a line missing in the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 for resetting the Power Management Unit for the iBook G4 among others? They do not mention removing the battery and power cord. The instructions for several other Macs do say that. I could only get my new battery (from the recall) to start charging after resetting the PMU with the battery & power cord removed.
iBook G4 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   New battery from recall on 8/14/06

Since the iBookG4 1.33 mid-2005 model is similar to the
PowerBook 12" from that era, the procedure to do the PMU
is not surprising in its success, as you have found.
Even though the instructions do not say it, I read in a pdf
file where that is an option for the iBookG4 last model, too.
Good that you pointed this out, as the instruction is not
exact in this regard. ~ Thank you, too!

  • Procedure - reset PMU on XServe G4

    Hi,
Can someone provide instructions, or link to instructions, for resetting the PMU on an XServe G4 1333mhz? My unit is shutting off with PMU error code 122. TIA

Donald, you need to scroll down and click on the link the starts with:
iBook (16 VRAM), iBook (14.1 LCD 16 VRAM), iBook (14.1 LCD 32 VRAM),
That will take you the the following (FAQ#6):
For iBook (16 VRAM) and later models of iBook, there is no physical reset button.
    1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
    3. Wait 5 seconds.
    4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

  • IBook still turns off after resetting PMU

    Hello,
My friend has a got a problem with his iBook G4. It showed no warning when the battery was low, and just turned off when he still had some 12% Battery left. I told him to reset the PMU, and so he did.
Now he does get a warning when his battery is low, but instead of going in "Stand By", the iBook just turns off when there's no power left.
This is quite annoying, because he often loses things he didn't save yet..
    Any suggestions ?
    futher..
I've got an iBook G4, about 2 years now.
I just wondered how long you guys keep your iBook before getting a new one or something like that...
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
Sometimes he gets a warning, but then the computer turns off instead of going in stand by. And sometimes he does get a warning.
Resetting the PMU hasn't helped, he 's still got this problem. It's really annoying, I hope someone has another tip..
His battery is a little over a year old, so I don't think it can have worn out already..

  • Reset PMU and Now iBook won't start!

The battery on my wife's indigo iBook wasn't holding a charge more than 30 minutes (although the indicator often said it had 3 hours). So tonight I tried resetting the PMU following the instructions I found linked to in this forum.
After pressing the button, I put the battery back in and plugged in the laptop, but now it won't start! When I press the power button--nothing! Any suggestions?
    The iBook is running Panther.

Nevermind. I got it to work.
But just in case this ever happens to anyone else, the problem was caused because the reset button had not returned to it's normal position after I reset it. Who knows--maybe I pushed it too hard. Anyway, I noticed this after turning on another light in the room making my visibility better. I pushed against it again with a paperclip and it popped down into place. Then I hit the power button and voila! it worked.
    Case closed.

  • Please help... Reset PMU and can't connect to wireless internet

I have an iBook G3 800. I took a trip and when I unpacked it, couldn't get it to turn on. I looked online on another computer and read the suggestion to reset the PMU. I did it, and my comp turned on. Only when I tried to connect to a wireless network, it didn't work. It seemed to be connected, but no webpages would load. I tried in a different location, with a different network, one I had used before. My comp identified the network, but when I tried to connect, I get an error message: "There was an error when trying to connect to the airport wireless network etc etc."
BTW, I had further trouble with starting up, but resetting the PMU worked, and that problem seems to be behind me. I also tried resetting the PRAM (or whatever equivalent the ibook has. I'm pretty ignorant.)
Thanks in advance for all your help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I travel a lot, and I find the easiest thing to do is to use the Setup Assistant to set up a new location. That will usually get you connected, and then that location will be saved under whatever name you gave it. Then if you return to that location, you can just click on it to get that particular setup. I have done that with both dial up and wireless.
    Good luck!
