Resize AND resample... in what order?

Hello all.  I've had to resample images up a bit on occasion for use at larger sizes (i.e. placement in Illustartor or INDesign at a larger size) and have done that with good results. However, I have a different situation now.
I have an image that is 300 dpi. I am working on a huge display in InDesign, and I've had to place this image at 392%, which gives me an effective dpi of 76.
The display company I'm working with wants the image placed at 100%, but needs only 100 effective dpi due to the nature of their technology.
So I think what I need to do is both:
- reSIZE the image to 392% AND
- reSAMPLE the image to be 100 dpi.
I believe this will have to be a two-step process using the Image Size palette. My question is, in what order do I take these two steps and what settings do I use in the Image SIze palette to get the best results?
Using Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 on Mac OS 10.6.8.  Thank you!

What they want is a 100 ppi image (you open it in Photoshop, go to Image Size and it says:the Resolution (in Document Size) is 100 pixels/inch. They want that image placed in InDesign at 100%-- not 125%, not 359%. They're trying to keep their processing time to a minimum by requiring that the resizing be done before image placement, rather than within the InDesign layout program, thereby minimizing the complexity of the art file and the amount of additional processing InDesign and their output program(s) need to handle.
They don't CARE about the pixel dimensions.
From the point of view of the display printing company... it's not their responsibility to scold customers for sending poor images. They receive images at all levels of quality, I'm sure.
And I don't have time, responsibility or inclination to protect them by creating sample images and pointing out that their guidelines don't cover the gamut of crappy images that their customers may send. And no, I am not the one who chose this display printing company. I am helping out someone in a different department of our own company. She choses who prints their displays.
The request I received was to take the images I've been given (and the "standards" under which those images were taken are also completely out of my control, so please don't go there) and make them look as good as possible while sending images within the specifications the display print company HAS set. I DO care about pixel size; however, I didn't know the best way to get to what they need with minimal degradation to existing picture quality.
Sigh. Never mind. I'll figure it out the best way to get a 300 ppi image placed at 392% in InDesign downsized to 100 ppi and placed in InDesign at 100%. It's late on a Friday, I'm covering for several people, and I thought someone might already have encountered such a scenario.
(BTW, I don't know why you made the assumption about "junior worker". I have expertise in some things, not as much in others. As is the case for everyone else in the world. And in these days of downsizing a lot of us are forced to wear hats that are not so familiar--and carefully choose the circumstances when rabble rousing might be worth the repercussions. This ain't one of those circumstances...)

  • Resize and Resample in Photoshop CC

    Hi.
I use Photoshop since 1997 and jump from CS5 to CC this week. What I used to do sometimes is taking a 150dpi image and need to make it 72dpi, BUT I really want it to change pixels dimension. In PS CS5 I just needed to go to "Image Resize" and change 150 do 72dpi, and PS kept the Cm/Inches dimensions but changed pixels. Is exactly what I need to do. I PS CC it doesn't work, if I change dpi it will only change image size in Cm/Inches.
And example, I have an Illustrator file, 800x800px. I export it as 150dpi JPG, opens in PS. It will show an image like 1667x1667px 150dpi. I want to change it to 72dpi so my JPG will be 800x800px again.
Some people will say: "but why don't you already export from ILL as 72dpi?". Because I sometimes need those images in 150 and sometimes in 72. So I prefer to have a 150dpi image and resize to 72 if I need instead the opposite.
Do you know if there is a way in PS CC to solve it?
    Thanks,
    Luiz

DPI PPI  and an image's DPI resolution setting and Inkjet Printers DPI Resolution setting ???
Dots Per Inch is an old printers term that came about when images were printed black and white using little dots of inks fined dots finer sharper images it density of dots size of dots image like news papers.  Later color image usinf 4 colors CMYK...
Pixels Per Inch a term use about displays color pixels are three color Red Green Blue their geometry layout varies and some have even added a fourth yellow component  again its a density size display are manufactured with a single PPI density.  Different displays panels have their manufactured PPI. Most desktop LCD panels today have a ppi around 100.  Displays do not support your Image Files DPI resolution setting the display pixels their PPI size.  Image sizing on displays is done by scaling  the numbers of pixels in a image a displaying the scaled image not the actual images pixel. Zooming percent....
Inkjets printers do not print like news papers and the do not use a single drop or dot of ink per image pixel.  The user their higher finer drops of ink to paint in you images larger square pixels. You inkjet printer can print pixels and siy up to the maximum resolution. Your printer DPI setting is a quality setting the higher the setting the finer the pixels will be painted in.  Higher quality settings are only available on high quality Photo paper for more ink is laid down and requires a special surface to prevent ink running pixels together regular paper would receive to much ink and be more a blotter paper.
Image DPI setting defines/sets the image Pixel size without changing a single pixel in am image you can print the image any size you want by changing the size of its pixels.

  • Resizing and resampling

    1. when do you want to keep the resample checkbox checked when changing the size of an image?
    2. When typing a new resolution with resample checked, why does the top pixel dimensions change, though the document size does not?
    3. If I type in a higher resolution with resample unchecked, it makes the image smaller, though the image now has a higher resolution. Does this mean that the same number of pixels are now just being used in the smaller image?
    Any help is appreciated.

    1. when do you want to keep the resample checkbox checked when changing the size of an image?
If you have to ask, then I would say (almost) never. Resampling changes the number of pixels making up your image. Resampling can improve or completely degrade your file. Yet Adobe has it checked by default. I can't tell you how many clients I have had come to me with totally ruined images because of resampling an image without knowing what they were doing.
    2. When typing a new resolution with resample checked, why does the top
pixel dimensions change, though the document size does not?
Document size should change... where are you seeing that information showing it does not? The PS Image Size dialog will show the open document size above the pixel dimension. With Resample checked, any changes in pixel width or height should reflect in the document size.
    3. If I type in a higher resolution with resample unchecked, it makes
the image smaller, though the image now has a higher resolution. Does
this mean that the same number of pixels are now just being used in the
    smaller image?
    YES!!

  • What happens on resize (and how can I force it to happen without resizing)?

    Hello everybody!
After running into this for the umpteenth time, I have decided to ask somebody who knows better. So, here goes:
Often, when I change something in the layout of an applet or an application (e.g. removing a JComponent and replacing it with another one), it doesn't get updated. I need to resize the Application window or the AppletViewer window, and then the change is correctly displayed and everything works fine. For Applets, I figured out that I can pack() as a workaround, but this can have some nasty side effects. I haven't been able to find anything for Applets though (an Applet doesn't have a pack() method).
So, does anyone know what exactly happens when I resize that window and why then my changes to the layout are applied? And, more importantly, what I have to do to reproduce this effect without resizing?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Wojtek

Thanks for the reply! Doesn't work though (invalidate-revalidate was one of my first tries...):
    - Applet has no revalidate().
    - If I put all my stuff into an extra JPanel that I add to the Applet, and revalidate() the JPanel after changing the stuff in it, nothing happens, I still need to resize.
    Any other ideas?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I have had to reinstall Windows 7 on my Pavilion dv6-6c13cl.  I would like to know what order do I reinstall the drivers, software and hardware?

    Hi:
The only drivers you need to be concerned with installing in a particular order are:
    1. Install the AMD chipset driver and reboot.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
    2. Install the graphics driver and reboot.
    3. Install the audio driver and reboot.
    4. Install the ethernet driver.
Then you can install whatever drivers you need and then install whatever software you want.
    Wireless card:
The parts list indicates your notebook has a Realtek 8188GN PCIe Half MiniCard (HMC) WiFi adapter - 802.11b/g/n 1x1.
This would be the driver you need for that device.

Finder has stopped putting my folders and files in alpha order.  What has happened?

When you check and reset that file setting back to alphabetical order, does it stick?
Sometimes a user permissions issue may cause a slight problem, so if this is the
only issue, you could try to 'repair disk permissions' in Disk Utility, However if there
is some other problem and this is only a symptom, something else may be the cause.
If files have been moved between user accounts, then previous account settings &
user permissions may be included with the moved file, so this matter may require
you to look into the settings within each file, via Get Info on the highlighted file name.
You can change permissions and privileges to some extent within this area.
And at times, a simple restart may be required, if the unit has been on awhile. Given
a portable computer, unlike a desktop, your use may not include leaving it on for
months at a time; so it probably has been restarted more than occasionally. Mine,
set to automatically sleep & spin-down the HDD when not in use, is up for months.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Hi, I am from Mauritius and I can't find my country for the MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program and hence, can't order the kit. What can I do?

Hi, I am from Mauritius and I my country is not in the list for the MacBook Bottom Case Replacement Program and hence, can't order the kit.
    What can I do?
    Thank you beforehand.

There may be an authorized Apple service provider who can handle the matter
of obtaining a replacement bottom part to the computer in question and also do
the necessary labor, if your unit qualifies for the program...
Did you see this section (Apple - Find Locations) and choose your country
then enter City and Product information to find authorized service provider
for your Mac portable, as supported by an independent local business?
    There are three categories, not all may be available across your country;
    Sales, Service, and Consulting.
    •Apple - Find Locations - Argentina:
    https://locate.apple.com/ar/es/
Another selector to try for service & support options appears through this link:
    https://getsupport.apple.com/SASOLocaleAction.action
The first one above tends to list any authorized retail repair & sales business
that provides product, service, sales, and repair in the area. With contact info.
    In any event...

  • When you open multiple documents, what's the rhyme and reason for the order the tabs are arranged?

Hi, a student had a question and I honestly never thought about this: when you open multiple documents in Photoshop CS4, what's the rhyme and reason behind the order they're arranged in (left to right?). Sometimes they're in one order and sometimes they're in another, and it doesn't always correspond with the filenames or the order in which they were selected.
Thanks, hope someone can enlighten us. It's probably really obvious, but... !

My student says that's not exactly what she was asking. What she meant was, is the arrangement of multiple tabbed documents open within Photoshop (which one is furthest left, which one comes next to it, which one is furthest right etc) dependent on something? In what order they were opened, alphabetical, date created or what?

  • What order should I migrate files to new fusion drive in order to not clog it up with music and photos's?

My new 27" 1Tb fusion drive iMac has arrived and I am planning on setting it up over the next couple of days. I chose not to migrate my data from my old Time Machine backup as I want to start afresh so before selling my old MacBook I copied all the data I wanted to transfer onto an external drive into organised folders. I now want to import theses file to the new imac. I have a 25Gig iPhoto library, a 74Gig music folder, plus around 120Gig of video, documents, Logic Pro and Garage band files that I want to keep on the internal drive. I also have around 600Gig of iMovie files that I will keep on external scratch drives which don't need to go on the internal drive. I am not going to use migration assistant as that all went wrong last time, I will just drag the folders from the external drive on to the imac's internal drive.
Is there an order that I should import all of this when migrating to the new Fusion Drive so as not to clog up the SSD part with files that don't need to be accessed often or speedily, i.e. photos and iTunes media files? I know that the fusion software somehow sorts it all out in the background but I want to know that the type of files that will most benefit from SSD speed will live on that part of the drive.
Or, will it just sort itself out no matter what order I import?

Contact Apple's Express Lane and ask them, It's their new technology and they're responsible for providing the salient details.

One thing, don;t think of them as being imported in any one particular order.
The order of the images is completely fluid, you can change it anytime you want to suit your needs at that particular moment.
As Léonie showed you select the order you want to see the images in by selecting the item you want to sort on in the pull-down.
The only time fluid sort order can be a problem is when you export groups of images. If you put the images into a particular order in Aperture when you export them and view them in the Finder the order they are in may very well be different. In this case you could give names to the images that include a sequence number or index.
Then when they are viewd in the Finder they will be in them same order they were in in Aperture.
