Restore and Resync question from a n00b

Okay, I have the need to erase and reload my Touch 2G (I just got it last week, but it appears that I have some corrupted data on it already.) I have about 500 songs in my PC's iTunes library, as well as several applications and a few pics.
So, if I need to reload it without erasing all the stuff in my iTunes library, I need to RESTORE from iTunes (which as I understand it erases the iPod), then unplug it, plug it back in and do a re-sync, right?
TIA for any answers.

Don't use a semicolon after the if statement.
Also, you cannot use "and" in Java - use "&&", although in this case you don't need it.
The code below is a "cleaned up" version of yours. Hopefully it shows a better way to structure this. The "gt;=" means "<="
e.g
public String grade (int average) {
    String rGrade = "";
    if (average >= 91) {
         rGrade = "A";
    } else if (average >= 81) {
         rGrade = "B";
    } else if (average >= 71) {
         rGrade = "C";
    } else if (average >= 61) {
         rGrade = "D";
    } else {
         rGrade = "E";
    // These print statements should probably be in the calling method
    System.out.println ( );
    System.out.println ("Final grade: " + rGrade);
    return rGrade;
}

  • Restore and Permissions Questions

    I'm wondering what my restore options are going alllow me to do. Let me elaborate on my situation and it might reveal why I am posting a new topic.
    I bought my macbook pro used, and it came with ilife and mac office installed. I used time machine to back up this OSX partition. The macbook pro is working perfectly, but small ghosts from the previous owner are bothering me.
    When I received the macbook pro, I changed the user name and password. I logged out and came back in as my newly created identity to find that my home folder in finder was still the previous user account. It had created a new home folder for the user I created, but the "default" home folder was still set to the previous user. Looking in User Accounts, that previous user name isnt listed, yet I noticed in Activity Monitor that all the applications are being launched as that previous user account.
    Its these ghosts that make me want to reformat for my piece of mind. My question is can I use Time Machine to preserve the software like ilife and mac office onto my new installation? Furthermore, will time machine handle reassigning the permissions from the old file system to the new? Or am I stuck with this previous owner's info?

    I'm not sure what's going on, but if there's no "macpro" in the NetInfo database, then you've already changed something around when you tried renaming the accounts. Not being able to "see" what's there makes it difficult for me to know how to proceed. I'm not confident that what I may suggest will be correct without looking into these accounts which I can't really do under the circumstances.
    The only sure thing I can recommend is erasing the drive and starting over from scratch, but I don't know if that's feasible for you to do. If not, then you could reinstall OS X doing an Archive and Install which doesn't require erasing the drive:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Can I restore and resync from Iphone 3GS to PC

    I recently had my main HDD fail so replaced it and reformatted PC. Upon reinstalling Itunes and autherising my Iphone with the new itunes and transfering purchases to the new library I cant remove apps ans when attempting to sync phone i get a msg saying that everything will be deleted and replaced by the new library. Would this cause the loss of everything that i have on my phone or just replace the same apps with the newly created library. Had very similar problem before and when I tried to restore i lost everything as it wiped out my entire phone.
    any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Have you also re-authorized your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes?
    If so, with your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
    If a 3rd party app does not transfer from your iPhone to your iTunes library on your new HD, you can re-download the app with iTunes on your computer and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.
    In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos that were transferred from a different computer will be erased from your iPhone first.
    After installing a new HD, your computer is detected as a new or different computer by your iPhone.
    If you copied your iTunes named folder (which stores your iTunes library) to your computer's backup and placed the copy in the same location on your new HD with iTunes quit when doing so, your iPhone should not be erased of any iTunes content when syncing your iPhone with iTunes with the new HD.

  • IPhone 4s: Backup, Restore, and updating questions??

    So, over the course of the last couple weeks, my iPhone 4s has been lagging, freezing and some apps are crashing. I'm assuming I should do a restore on the phone. I've never done one before, so I'm a little nervous about it. So I have some questions before I get started.
    1) If I restore my iPhone to factory settings and then restore my latest backup will the problems that I'm having still persist? I still have 6GB of empty space on my phone (I have the 32GB) so I don't think the lagging is caused by the phone being too full. I'm just wondering if I load from the backup will the issue that's causing the phone to lag/freeze/crash just be put back on the phone when I do the restore?
    2) I haven't yet updated to iOS 8 because a few people I know did it with their phones and it essentially rendered their phones unusable. I was wondering if I HAVE to update to the new iOS when I do a restore? I've heard mixed reviews on the performance of iOS 8 on the 4s, and I don't want to make any problems worse.
    3) If I do the reset to factory setting and then restore from my backup, will everything that's on my phone at the time of the backup be put right back on the phone? Will all of my photos, contacts, game data etc be transferred? Essentially, I just want to make sure that nothing at all is lost in the restore process.
    Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this as painless a process as possible I would appreciate any and all input.
    Thank you in advance!

    What can happen after doing an update is something doesn't go quite right - the phone will work fine, but you'll notice odd stuff, like it being slower than usual, locking up, etc. A restore usually resolves that.
    If the phone seems to lock up in general (ie: not just in a certain app), then doing a restore is worth doing. If a particular app tends to lock up, the issue is likely with that app.
    Wiping the phone and restoring re-installs the iOS from scratch, which will get rid of any issues that may have during an update.
    You do have to install iOS 8 at this point - Apple will, for a very short time, continue to sign older versions of iOS after a new one is released, but that usually only lasts a few days, if that.
    From what I've read, the 4S runs iOS 8 just fine. Initially, you may notice it running more slowly, but you shouldn't notice that after using it for a while.
    As for what gets transferred back - I know from an iTunes backup, you get everything - essentially a mirror image of what your phone looks like when you do the backup. Not sure if the same is true for an iCloud backup.
    Hope that helps

  • Trying to restore and back up from icloud but its asking me for someone elses password....?

    Hello, I had to restore my phone to get the new ios7 and now its asking me where I want to back up from. I want to do it from icloud and when I type in my apple id and password, then I agree to terms, Then it asks me to sign into tunes and gives me a random email (Iwatts30@yahoo) and asks me for the password... which obviously i dont have. Any suggestions here...

    The phone is asking for a password, or the backup is asking for a password?
    If it's the backup, then it's whatever password was set up for that data backup.
    If it's the phone passcode lock, then you need to restore the phone first.

  • Does the sms cache come back after a restore and back up from icloud

    My phone is running sluggish and I want to do a restore. In addition to this I would like to get rid of my old deleted messages that still appear in spotlight search. I'm
    Not country in the same country as my mac so I can't back up via iTunes. I was going to back up with icloud and imatch. I have two concerns though before I do this.
    1. Will all my old sms caches just come back with all those deleted messages I had. Are they saved in my last back up or will they disappear as there saved to the phone itself (which will be wiped via the restore0)?
    2. Secondly I want to get my old music back and as I'm away from home for over a year I need to do this via imatch. Will my imatch subscription still work and will it bring in all my music I had previously.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Juniper Approval Question [from a n00b]

    This is probably the wrong section, so I apologize in advance.
    Anyway, does anyone know if Apple would be willing to do payments or something for those who do not qualify for the Juniper card? I am homeschooled and need a new computer, our PC has ran out of room and its effecting my school work.
    Tried applying for the juniper card, that way I would get monthly payments that were around 60.00 per month, which is perfectly fine with me. I would be able to make the payments every month on time, its not a problem. The total for what I am buying would come up to 2400.00, so you see where payments would come in handy. There is no way I could make the payment all at once, again I need payments.
    Does anyone have just the slightest idea on if I contacted them and explained my situation that they would be willing to let me do payments at all? I really need the computer for school, like my education depends on it. I just wouldn't want to call and make a fool of myself, you know?
    Thanks!

    You're describing a very simple work process that should be quite easy to implement in GP.
    There are only a few things you need to develop (write code):
    - build an app to allow the user to select the role (or roles) they want
    - determine who the two other participants should be - you could even use a group for the 'role assignment' processor, so you could 'hard-code' the group assignment to the role step, and then assign/remove the correct people to the group
    - construct the email templates, and the CO's to send the email.
    Follow the sample GP on this page:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/4a/d78041a17e060de10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
    This should help you get your feet wet with constructing your first GP.
    I would start with constructing the process to use hard-coded values, and then build the components of the app to allow the user to enter the roles required, as well as determining approvers.
    Hope that helps you out!

    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

    First, remove your personal information from your post.  That's not needed here.  This is a public forum, and it is unwise to provide your personal data online.
    Second, here's how you reset your password and/or security questions.
    How to reset your Apple ID password.
    Go to iforgot.apple.com and type in your Apple ID, then click 'Next'.
    Verify your date of birth, then click 'Next'.
    You'll be able to choose one of two methods to reset your password, either E-Mail Authentication or Answer Security Questions.
    If neither method works, then go to https://getsupport.apple.com
    (If you see a message that says 'There are no products registered to this Apple ID, simply click on 'See all products and services')
    Choose 'More Products & Services', then 'Apple ID'.
    A new page will open.
    Choose 'Other Apple ID Topics', then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.
    Click the blue 'Continue' button.
    Select the contact option that suits your needs best.
    How to reset your Apple ID security questions.
    Go to appleid.apple.com, click on the blue button that says 'Manage Your Apple ID'.
    Log in with your Apple ID and password. (If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, go to iforgot.apple.com first to reset your password with a password recovery email)
    Go to the Password & Security section on the left side, and click on the link underneath the security questions that says 'Forgot your answers? Send reset security info email to [email]'.  This will generate an automated e-mail that will allow you to reset your security questions.
    If that doesn't work, or  there is no rescue email link available, then click on 'Temporary Support PIN' that is in the bottom left side, and generate a 4-digit PIN for the Apple Account Security Advisor you will be contacting later.
    Next, go to https://getsupport.apple.com
    (If you see a message that says 'There are no products registered to this Apple ID, simply click on 'See all products and services')
    Choose 'More Products & Services', then 'Apple ID'.
    A new page will open.
    Choose 'Other Apple ID Topics', then 'Forgotten Apple ID Security Questions'.
    Click the blue 'Continue' button.
    Select the contact option that suits your needs best.

    I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!

    If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
    Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
    Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

    Your entire second paragraph is so confusing I am going to ignore it.
    But I may be able to answer your first and third paragraphs, which seem to address the same question.
    I wonder where your iPhone states it was backed up yesterday.  I am going to assume that you see this under Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    If that is true, then the backup from yesterday is in iCloud.  The one and only way to restore an iCloud backup is to do this on your iPhone:
    Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
    That will cause your iPhone to begin a setup process.  As part of that process, assuming you enter the same Apple ID you used when you created the iCloud backup, you will be offered the opportunity to restore from it.

  • Restore and consolidate multiple libraries from DVD

    Hi,
    although I think this is probably a common question I have yet to find an answer in the forums.
    To free some HDD space, I have backed up parts of my iPhoto 09 lib to DVD and deleted them from the library. Of course, some albums that had photos of these parts in them, are now incomplete.
    Meanwhile I have bought a bigger HDD that could accomodate the whole library again. Is there a way to restore the photos from those DVDs to get back to the lib I had before? To even complete the albums again would be best.
    But so far, when I reimport the pictures from DVD, iPhoto does not even recognize modified pictures and their originals, they are each shown as separate pictures.
    Sigh, any help?

    Copy the Library intact from the DVD to the Desktop and then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager ($20) to merge them.
    Or, when you see the disk show up in the iPhoto Window drag the Events from the disk to the Library heading on the left of the iPhoto Window.
    Regards

  • Restore and recover Oracle 10g database from tape.

    I have a very basic question for restore and recover Oracle 10g database. Our envirnment settings are:
    Oracle 10g on Unix, daily database and archivelog backup to Vista NetBackup server. Retention policy is 2. Old backup files are copied from NetBackup server to the tape for record keeping.
    I want to restore a database to a point in time. Because our retention policy is setup to 2. The backup files I need have been copied to the tape. So I should ask SYSTEM ADMIN to copy the backup files back to NetBackup server disk or I can ask him to copy backup files to the Unix server that host my Oracle 10g database. Then I can use Rman to do restore and recover. Is this doable? I know normal procedure is to copy backup files I need back to NetBackup server disk, not directly back to database server. Please put your comments here as early as better. I do appreciate your kind help.

    Are you using catalog or nocatalog?
    If the backup information is out of retention, Catalog them again also in netbackup.
    So that you can able to restore database directly without copying those files to host.
