Restore incarnation
Dear gurus,
Situation: we have one oraprod production DB. Daily a snapshot is made from this instance with the name orasnap. This orasnap has only 1 day life time. For this orasnap, a new DBID is generated daily using the nid utility. After this, the orasnap is registered in the rman catalog (oracat) and backuped successfully. Please refer to my previous thread: One database with multiple instance names

Is there a way to produce a backup list of these orasnap incarnations (and hence to restore it), a kind of "list backup database orasnap" or "reset database to incarnation 8358"?
Why are the lines displayed in which the Current incarnation column is set to NO?
We also tried these:
$ rman catalog catuser/catpassw@oracat
RMAN> set dbid=2706083210;
executing command: SET DBID

In the oracat DB we found these tables (in the catalog tablespace) containing:
AL ==> archivelogs
DB ==> DBIDs
DFATT ==> list of incarnations datafiles
ORL ==> redologs
TS ==> tablespaces
Please help...
Is it possible to restore the database to the previous incarnation?Yes, Why not?
And does the SCN numbers continue from the older incarnation to the new incarnation of the database? What do you mean by saying this ?

[HELP] Problem with restore and recovery to new host
Hi, guys!
I have been trying for two days, but still cannot get it to work.
I have taken a full hot(online) backup with archive logs as well as the control file and SPFILE, and then copied the backup to the new host with the same directory structure and settings. Finally, I have tried to restore & recover the database on the new host but failed during the restore process.
Both the original host and the new host have the same Oracle installed down to the patch level. I couldn't figure out the proper solution to this problem base on my limited knowledge about Oracle DB.
Could anyone help me out here? Any advice would be appreciated!

Yep, I have doubled check the directory structure that get in the way, and they are all exist.
Would it be something to do with the folder permissions?

Trying to restore old GarageBand projects, some will, some won't?
I am on OS X 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and before the last system update (to 10.6.8) I was running Time Machine on an outboard Samsung drive, and had an Iomega external drive to which I had moved my GarageBand folder (and its pointer) and all my projects. With the update to 10.6.8, my Iomega drive was suddenly no longer accessible. I read a note on the forum that said Firewire support was dropped with 10.6.8, so I reconnected the drive with USB, but still was unable to access. I had the bright idea to restore my GarageBand projects from Time Machine, from before I had moved them to the outboard drive. I can see the projects when I do a search for "garage" on my Time Machine backups, but have only been able to restore a handful of them. The icon for some of the project files is a dark grey horizontal rectangle (the ones that =did= restore) then there are others that have a light grey horizontal rectangle as their file icon, and others that have the little tan guitar as their icons. I'm figuring these may be sets of projects from the different versions of GarageBand that have lived under OS X in its various incarnations. Whenever I select any project files other than the handful of dark-grey-rectangle files, and click "restore" in Time Machine, after asking me to select a target folder (which does exist on my Mac) I get a pop-up message that has "Copy" in the header for the pop-up, and says:
"The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."
Please help me understand (a) what that error message means, it sounds like the Time Machine program is trying to improperly create a backup on my main HD, but all I want to do is copy those files to my Mac, (b) how I can get my files out of Time Machine and back onto my main HD, and (c) if I can convert them to the current GarageBand format once I get them on my machine.
I also tried to restore from Time Machine the .mp3 files that were created from my GarageBand projects, but after selecting a group of those from a Time Machine search, I got the same message about "wrong case sensitivity for a backup"... If I try to play them from my iTunes, where I had put them after creating the .mp3's in GarageBand, it gives me a message that the underlying file isn't present, so it can't play the song, which is why I'm trying to get those GarageBand files over from Time Machine. If I had only not updated to 10.6.8, I think all would have been well.
Something doesn't look quite right. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I'm a songwriter and my old songs are now trapped in Time Machine! I'm very nervous that I might accidentally delete them instead of rescuing them.Unfortunately, no. The error message I'm getting, about the volume not having the right case sensitivity for a backup, seems to be an inappropriate message, at least to my thinking. I am only trying to restore some old files. Seems like it would not have any problem. And the first five I restored came back just fine, I chose "choose location" and just let them come into the Applications folder, then I moved them to a separate folder on the desktop just so I could see them all together. When I went back to gather some more files, I started getting that "case sensitivity for a backup" message, and now I get it every time, even if I try to restore the same files that I already restored, to another folder of course.
It's like Time Machine thinks I'm making another backup, when all I'm trying to do is restore a few GarageBand .band files.
I played around with it some more, trying to restore a single file to an empty folder on my desktop, trying to restore to a thumb drive (got a "volume is not formatted properly" error, even though the drive already had some Quickbooks files on it I copied from my current machine successfully), and nothing I try is working.
Do I dare restart my computer and see if that clears something up? Like I said before, I fear I will end up deleting my song files, or destroying access to my outboard Time Machine backup disk. The original song files were on an Iomega external disk that my Mac cannot access anymore, it may be crashed, I will have to take it to the Genius bar to have someone look at it. But it is frustrating to see those files in my Time Machine backups and not be able to get them back on my main disk!!!!! Thanks for the help you gave, but there was nothing in there that pertained to this particular problem. Any other suggestions? Should I "eject" my Time Machine external disk and then restart the computer and reattach the Time Machine disk? Will that protect those files?
Sorry to be so full of questions. I really just need help getting these files off the Time Machine. Sounds so simple on the tutorial, but it is just not happening here. Thanks again, please, any other suggestions please send them on. -
Unable to open 11g R2 database now after trying an RMAN restore
Hi my database is not opening now.
What I was trying was to restore the database on my new server from latest database taken from my old live server and applying it on my new 11g DB (new server-database already created)
old server-11.1.0.7.0-windows 2003 server 32 bit
new server-11.2.0.3.0-windows 2008 64 bit server
The steps i have done which caused this , (After everything was working fine, i did these foll.steps and now all messed up):
The oracle database on this new server was already 11.2.3.0 -it was not upgrade, i directly installed 11.2.0.3.0 on it + applied latest patches etc.
I took RMAN backup from old server 11.1.0.7.0 oracle database.
Copied this backup to to the new server flash recovery area &every step of the restore was working fine -
in nomount mode, restored the control file from autobackup-fine
in mount mode, catalogued the files-fine (Backup from old live, copied to new live)
I restored&Recovered the database until the latest archivelogs.
Until the above steps-all worked fine like a normal recovery steps.
Then I gave "alter database open resetlogs" in RMAN prompt, it gave out error and from that point onwards I am unable to open the database now.
Unfortunately, couldnt grab full screenshot of the error in RMAN but the error basically said that bootstrap failed and i have to open the database with the upgrade option?
Please see in alert log as well

[/code]This is why you do backups both before and after doing other things.
So one way to do something like this:
Backup old db.
expdp old db.
Install new 11gR2, create database.
Back it up.
Turn off archivelog.
impdp
Turn on archivelog.
Back it up.
The general thought here is you would start over with the first new db backup if the imp didn't work, you turn off archiving to avoid generating lots of redo that would be for a recovery you would never do.
There is more than one way to do it (TIMTOWTDI), best way depends on details, including volume of data and platform changes. expdp/impdp has an over the network option if disk space is limited and network is fast.
I usually allow for several tries when going to a new box, since the new box will require testing anyways. -

Edited by: martin.morono on Nov 8, 2012 11:49 AMThanks Levi,
I slightly modified your script to recatalog the backup pieces since they are note stored at the same location in PR and QA.
No luck. The error message is different but the result is the same... it keeps failing.

RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 2 found to restore
RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile 1 found to restoreSO MY QUESTION OR DOUBT IS WHY AT THE END IT FAILS THAT THERE IS NO BACKUP FOR DATAFILE 1,2,3,4 ??? AS WE CAN SEE ABOVE IT IS PRESENT IN MY BACKUPSET ??
ANY IDEA /HINTS/TIPS ?
I searched on google and somebody mentioned to a similar case that it could be a problem with 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF' where as in my case i have set it to 'CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON'
Somehow looks like that the control file is not having latest backup info ... :-( I already took a fresh backup 2 times and landed up in same issue.. not sure where i am doing a mistake.
Regards

Meanwhile i also looked in the trace file folder to see if there are any clues. here goes the content of alert_log.file

Time Machine: How do I restore data saved from an external HD that's dead
Hi,
I backup both my G5 and a connected external HD (Ryuk) - using Time Machine - to a backup HD (G5 Backup). Ryuk has just died. How do I restore Ryuk's contents from the G5 Backup - using Time Machine - temporarily to the G5 until I get a replacement drive for Ryuk [I need to access data that was stored on Ryuk and also want to have another complete copy].
Obviously when Ryuk was alive and well, I could see it in Finder when using Time Machine. Now it has ceased to be - Time Machine knows not of its presence. The G5 Backup contains all of Ryuk's data - neatly stored in many little folders - but I need these in one single incarnation of Ryuk before it popped its clogs.
So can this be done using Time Machine or is there some manual way of doing this?
Cheers, B.

Since the external drive is non-operational, there are probably two possibilities here:
1) A electrical component in the external drive package failed, but the drive itself may be OK. To find out, the drive must be pulled and placed in a separate enclosure. If the drive itself is OK, you should be able to access the disk for your information.
2) If the drive itself failed, you will need to take the drive apart to access the actual disk. A data restoration service may possibly be able to retrieve the data from the disk by mounting it in another drive.
I would suggest that you start by consulting a professional data restoration service to explore your options. Check with the local computer repair shop, and if they don't perform this service, they will be able to refer you to a company that does. -
HELP! - Restoring a machine from a non Time Machine FW drive?
In all previous incarnations of OS X I have routinely imaged a roomful of machines by having a good image in a FW drive and using Disk Utility (and CCC before it) to restore the bootable image onto a new machine fresh out the box.
I've just tried this with our lab full of new 10.5.8 machines (details in sig) onyl to find that when I reboot the machines following a succesful restore I see the desktop but no dock, drive icon or menu bar.
I KNOW this must meanthat parts of OS X admin have changed & that I've not kept up but I wonder if anyone would be so kind as to help me out with the way I should be achieving this task these days...
Many thanks in advance,
NA little more info on the problem:-
Once the machines boot I can see the (custom) desktop image but no other UI components. Clicking where those components should be produces no response.
Keyboard shortcut for Force Quit has no effect.
Keyboard shortcut for log out produces the dialog box but clicking log out has no effect.
Hard restarting and PRAM zap changes nothing.
I'm now pretty much stumped. This always worked in the past.
In my head I'm wondering if an IP conflict could be blocking the full boot of the GUI (as I'm imaging from a single machine the IP will conflict until I can get in and manually change it).
Any help (very) gratefully received,
N

How do i restore my computer using time machine to how it was a few days ago?
I installed Maverick. It was not a horrid idea but I cannot sync my iphone and ipad mail/contacts etc except through icloud. And that just doesn't work for me. The solution seems to be to restore my HD to its state prior to when i installed Maverick. But that was a few days ago. Luckily, I do have Time Machine. Things are backed up, but I am a little unclear how I go about restoring to a previous incarnation of the harddrive, rather than the current one. When I got a new HD it was easy, just plugged it in and TM transferred everything. But I don't want to transfer the current version, I want the version from a few days ago. How do I do this?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To restore a Time Machine backup, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook Pro is starting up to start up in OS X Recovery. Then, plug the external drive with the Time Machine backups, and choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup.
It will let you choose which backup you want to restore, so select it and follow its steps. The hard drive will be erased -
How to restore beyond time machine last full backup
I had a disk problem over the weekend and macbook pro wouldn't boot.
This has happened once before when it was within warranty period and I took it to the Genius bar and they ran diagnostics on the drive and said it was ok. Disk Warrior however was saying it had bad sectors and was failing but Apple disagreed. Apple then resinstalled the o/s and it was working ok and I restored everything back ok.
The same thing happened on Saturday and it wouldn't boot. Disk Utility said it couldn't be repaired and Disk Warrior said it was failing.
I did exactly what the Genius did and booted from internet recovery and went to restore from Time Capsule. During the restore process it listed only the full backups that had been taken so I picked the most recent but that was 6 days ago. It has completed the restore and Disk Utility says disk is fine.
So I'm asking two questions really.
1) Is there a way to restore beyond that last full backup and apply the incrementals to get it to the last hourly Time Capsule backup? When I go into Time Machine now it only has today in it and last hour so doesn't seem to be able to access previous incarnations of the backups.
2) Is there a way to run fsck or something on the disk to get any bad sectors as marked to not be used to prevent the problem from happening again?
I am toying with getting a solid state drive but not immediately.
My urgency is to get some files I was working on (Adobe illustrator) within the last week. They would have been on the incremental backup but everything is restored from that 31st March full backup.
Regards
MikeHi
But isn't that based on the fact that those backups are visible in Time Machine? All I see is today, not 2 days ago.
Mike -
Had ipad2 crash during ios 8.1 update, tried different things to make it work, ended up booting as new. Tried on a couple different days to restore from clould and it says server not avaible, would love to get the info back, any suggestions?
Can someone tell me the implications of using the command RESET DATABASE on my system days after I did the open reset logs? I opened the database with the ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS in SQL not RMAN and I see the below note.....
Re: Can't get dataguard to recover after SAN crash.
To reset the incarnation of the target database in the RMAN repository, which means to do either of the following actions:
•Inform RMAN that the SQL statement ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS has been executed and that a new incarnation of the target database has been created. Note that if you run the RMAN command ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS (not the SQL statement with the same keywords), then RMAN resets the target database automatically so that you do not have to run RESET DATABASE. By resetting the database, RMAN considers the new incarnation as the current incarnation of the database. -
How to restore a schema from a corrupted DB
Hi,
I need your help.
I am using a laptop and a desktop, both with XP SP2. I have installed Oracle XE on both of them. They are in a LAN.
I have been using them for almost a year now...
But since few days ago I cannot use the DB from my desktop (there is no reason ). I can not start it anymore, even if the "net start ..." command tells me that it is started.
I really need a schema I have created in that DB. I have tried to restore the DB, but without any luck. Not even through Sqlplus utility.
My question to you is if I there is a way of copying the schema from the "bad" DB to the working one from my laptop. Wich are the files needed to be copied, or is there a tool for this?
Please help.
Thank you.I don't know how to attach...

Hi there
Env: Oracle 10g R2 EE on ASM (10.2.0.5.0) - non-RAC, RHEL 5.8 64bit
RMAN backup location: /ora_backup
I have a database on PROD server. I took full RMAN backup of this database and it is stored in "/ora_backup".
I have a new DEV server which has this "/ora_backup" mounted on it. DEV has same Oracle version/patches, directory structure, etc.
I have to create the database with same name as in PROD on the DEV server.
I create the ASM instance with required diskgroups (same names and size as in PROD) and creating same directories on the filesystem for the database. I copied the pfile from PROD to the DEV server and started the database in NOMOUNT mode. I issued following commands to initiate the restore.

I used this exact same method to restore the database on TEST server with no issues. I am not sure what is the problem?
Since I was able to restore the database on TEST server, this is definitely not due to the bug mentioned in MOS.
I have read some posts on the forum including these MOS docs (727655.1, 1265151.1, 392237.1) but none fits my situation or solves the problem.
Any clues?
Best regardsyes this is the error but I don't know the cause because I followed exact same steps to restore the DB to TEST server.
