Restoring Mail folders?

I accidentally deleted a mail folder within Apple Mail and I was hoping someone could shed some light on possibly restoring deleted mail folders.
Thanks!

Messages deleted as a result of deleting the mailbox that contained them don't go anywhere, not even to the Trash. Rather, they are permanently removed from the filesystem.
If the messages are from a POP account configured to leave mail on the server for some time and they are still on the server, there is a way to tell Mail to download them again. You can use webmail (if the account allows web access) or the Account Info window to check whether the messages are still on the server. To open the Account Info window, choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

Okay, after my iMac hard drive was replaced (needed to upgrade to mountain lion). Time machine was restarted after restoring my files. (Think I should have used migration assistant). The prior dates 11/13/2012 (last date before my hard drive was replaced and a full backup) are grayed out.
Depending on how you restored your files, the new drive may be treated as a different one (even if it has the same name).   If so, the backups were made from a drive that's no longer available.
If so, you should be able to see the backups of the old drive via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If you'd done a full system restore or used Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your stuff back from your backups, Time Machine should have treated the old backups as if they were made from the new drive.  Since that apparently didn't happen, you should be able to do it manually, via #B6 in the same link.   It's a bit techie and tedious, unfortunately, but you should be able to tell it to "associate" the old backups with the new drive.

I upgraded to Mavericks from 10.6.8 and I no longer have any of my mail folders in macmail. If I look up an email via spotlight, I can find it, so it's in there. How do I restore my folders?

As an update: I was able to find my archived boxes and emails on my hard drive by doing this:
    Open a Finder window.
Select Go | Go to Folder… from the menu.
    Type "~/Library/Mail/V2".
Once I was able to get my macmail working properly, most of my mailboxes appeared, however not all and only a few recent emails are in a few of the boxes.
I really need to move the emails from the archive back into my macmail. When I try to import using the mbox method, it doesn't recognize the .mbox even though they are .mbox. Other than re-emailing each individually to myself, I don't know what to do. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to some easier solution?

  • How do I restore my archived mail folders after downloading Yosemite

After downloading Yosemite, all my archived mail folders have disappeared - can someone please help me, I really need to get this information back?

    Do you have a backup?
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then Mail/V2/Mailboxes

  • How use Time Machine to restore/transfer all mail folders, accounts, mail s

I did an erase of my HD & a new install of Snow Leopard. Had Leopard OS X 10.8 b4 (corrupted SBBD, freezes had to use Disk Warrior to fix file structure)
I tried Archive & Install 1st - but it failed. The plan was to fix Leopard 10.8 & once fixed update to Snow Leopard. “The Installer was unable to import your user directory from the previous system. You will need to create a new account.”
In any event now I sit with a fresh copy of Snow Leopard installed. I was unable to get Migration Assistant to see my Time Machine volume sitting on my new desktop & new Finder! I selected transfer data from TM or other external volume yet, only my Mac HD showed up. I wasted more time trying to get into time machine via Time Machine preferences. It kept wanting to back up my new system with a box that said tell me when erase old backups! I wasn't about to allow TM to back up new system till I selectively moved my stuff. I finally just opened the External TM volume & browsed & dragged my Documents, & other easy to move files to my New system.
I only discovered today that I could have right or control clicked TM & actually enter it. I still have it stopped from doing any backups so it is grayed out in the menu bar.
So I am NOT looking to transfer my Home folder or my old system (corruption danger).
I am slowly reinstalling all the apps I can find or have disks.
I am really hoping I need not do the mail in multiple steps by finding the Inbox in my last TM & restoring that & then on to Sent, etc.
So, I have yet to open the Mail in Snow Leopard which will be empty & want a way to restore my Leopard version of mail complete with everything from my TM backup. If I disconnect from the Internet b4 I launch restore mail & then connect hopefully all the new mail will be added to Inbox along with restored & I won’t need to manually drag anything.
Also, to restore an app can I just find the app in Apps folder & click restore? I only have a few I want to do that way such as the old version of iMovie HD 6 which is no longer available from Apple. (Yes, I still want both my ’08 version I bought & the older version sitting on My TM backup)
    Thanks much!

    Hello Doug:
    It should be pretty easy.
Open the Address Book. Click on the Time Machine icon. You will see a cascading address book display. Use the bar on the side to go back in time. When you have one before the problem, click restore.

I have just synched my first ihpone with my imac.  I thought the data would copy from the imac to the ipone bu the reverse seems to have happened.  I was using mail folders to store all my important messages and they have all disappeared.  I am now trying to resotr ethem using Time Machine but I can't locate them on there.  I have looked at previous forums on this but the cmd shift G search advice isn't working.

Hi, I never use TM, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

Can't imaging something not being covered there.

  • My filed mail folders not restored, but I have them on another HD can I move them over ?

OK ... this was my own fault (owning up)
I took backup with Mozback up .. but it did not backup my filed/stored mail.
So after a clean install of OS when I retored profile email OK and inbox but none of my filed mails form Local folders.
However previously they were on another HDD ... so I do have access to them all.
    i.e they are in:
    E:\Users\Rick-old\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\20619x3p.default\Mail
there are 3 folders in that Mail folder all containing what appear to be valid mails.
My current new Thunderbird install mail folders are in:
    C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\4ttn729w.default\Mail
    Hope you can help
Can I just move them over, or is there a correct way to do it to ensure I don't mess up folder structure or mail dates.

    C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\4ttn729w.default\Mail\Local Folders
is the home of Local Folders
copying one lot over the other with Thunderbird closed will replace one with the other.

  • How can I backup my e-mail folders to an alternate location?

I would like to be able to make a copy of my e-mail folders. I could then use these folders to restore my e-mails in case of a system crash. They only thing I have been able to determine that they seem to be in a folder AppData under my login name. But the folder seems to be hidden or something because it does not show up. How can I access them and make a copy. Furthermore, how can I copy them back in case of a recovery?

There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.).
The instructions on how to download and install it can be found at http://barryduggan.info/exportMail.php

  • Manually Restore Mail and Address Book Entries

Since reinstalling OS 10.4.11 I am having a **** of a time restoring some vital info.
    Question:
How the heck does one manually transfer Mailboxes and their messages and AddressBook entries?
I cannot use the export / mport because all the info is on a backup drive mirror image. I didn't move anything onto a special folder with all the info before I gave my G4 a lobotomy so I have to grab it at the program individual files level.
If I open the address book on the External the NEW default empty one opens on the desktop. not the old one on the Xternal HD. Both Internal and Xternal are 10.4.11
Also is it the same procedure for G4 to Macbook Intel 10.6?
This is frustrating.  I seem to remember a plist or similar to simply replace the old into the new folder....Please, tell me what file I can drag and drop and in what folder and where are they located in the directory. This community has been most invaluable in understanding how things Mac work.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Again,
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
The only complication might br Rights/Priviedges, so do Get Infos & make sure you have rights after moving them.

  • How to restore mail

My mail got corrupted. I have several POP accounts and a .mac account. I am trying to get all my mailboxes restored from backup data.
Here is what I did. I have the user/library/mail folder backed up. I quit mail and moved what I believed to be the corrupted /library/mail folder to the trash and replaced in with what I think is a clean backup /library/mail folder. I then restarted mail expecting it to bring up all the email boxes etc from the back up. Several of the mailboxes are missing. All the mail in the inbox is marked as unread. The Sent folder is empty. From comparison to the backup I know the sent folder is supposed to have ~20 MBytes of data in it and also has .mbox files that don't appear in mail.
I'm pretty confused by all this and would appreciate any insight. Note my OS is 10.3.9.
    Thanks,

Do I need to restore the preferences file com.apple.mail.plist also in addition to the library mail file to get this to work?
I have observed something interesting. I do what I described in my first post and restored just the library>mail folder without doing anything to the prefernece file. Then after starting mail the library>mail folder grows with approximately twice the number of folders. It is as if mail makes some new empty folders or mailboxes instead of using the ones in the restored mail. I'm away from my mac now so I haven't tried restoring preferences yet.

  • Does anyone know how to restore mail signatures in Mavericks?

Does anyone know how to restore mail signatures in Mavericks?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in earlier versions there is only one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Reinstall Server and restore mail

Our 10.4.9 server won't boot. It's been determined that there is something wrong when the boot drive mounts for read/write - it kernel panics. I have been able to mount the server drive on another mac via target disk mode and copy the entire hard drive.
If I erase and reinstall Mac OS X server on the internal drive, what is the easiest way to restore our mail services to as they were - how do I bring back the mail folders from the copy of the boot drive I made.
    Thanks
Intel Xserve Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Assuming you kept all default locations you will need to restore the contents of:
    Complete directories:
    /var/imap
    /var/spool/imap
    /etc/postfix
    /etc/mail
    /etc/squirrelmail
    /etc/spam (if you have it)
    Single files:
    /etc/imapd.conf
    /etc/amavisd.conf
    /etc/cyrus.conf
    /etc/clamav.conf
Make sure mail services are stopped while copying files over.
Also, since you had disk issues, most likely your mail database is corrupted and needs to be fixed.
To fix download mailbfr and run "mailbfr -f".
    It's available here: http://osx.topicdesk.com/downloads

  • Issue with emails being deleted from my Yahoo mail folders

Hi, I am experiencing an issue where emails are being deleted from my Yahoo mail folders when the weekly Sunday night purge of the Yahoo Trash folder is carried out by Yahoo. These are mails that have been moved from my inbox via the iphone mail app.
I have a similar problem with Outlook 2010 on my laptop but not with Outlook 2003 on my desktop.
When I move the emails from my inbox I have noticed that using Outlook 2003, the moved email is left in my inbox in "strikethrough" mode whereas on Outlook 2010 it is deleted from my inbox. I subsequently purge the marked email from my inbox in 2003.
I am able to see and access the emails in the folder I have moved them to until after midnight on Sunday when they dissappear. The emails moved via 2003 are ok and not lost.
Funnily enough when using an earlier version of the iphone mail app I remember that I could see emails in "strikethrough" mode in Outlook 2003 when they had been moved via the iPhone mail app but you don't see that now.
It feels like some sort of pointer issue to me ...... any ideas on how to stop this happening?.

This is now fixed !!!! I am not sure how though :-((
I reported the problem to Yahoo and in the process of them investigating the issue my sub-folders suddenly became invisible via my IMAP connection and then also were invisible on-line following a log out and a log in. After my initial panic, I contacted Yahoo who were able to restore my complete account. Since then, the problem has gone away.
I have been testing this for two weeks and all is working perfectly from whatever device I use to connect to my mail (IMAP or via my browser).
    Phew!

  • Can I use Unix symbolic links between Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard Mail folders?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I partitioned my iMac HD to have two partitions: Macintosh HD has Mountain Lion; I reinstalled Snow Leopard on Macintosh HD 2. Best part: you can access your user-created files from EITHER disk partition. But not so OS X Mail. I wanted to revert to Snow Leopard, since I don't like the iOS-like Mountain Lion (swipe THIS!), but Mail is a problem since all my Snow Leopard Mail was successfully migrated over to Mountain Lion during upgrade.
Is there a way to use Unix symbolic links between actual OS X Mail folders in Mountain Lion and OS X Mail in Snow Leopard?
It seems the (trial) symbolic link created pointed to a blank file.

It's not a matter of "letting" each maintain its own database, William. By default, I believe, I have no control over what gets written. In fact, if there were a way to set a preference that says, use this index named "spotlightindexSL' only [while in SL], that might solve my problem. Then when booting up in ML, it would just go after the index it last made.
My guess is that while I am in ML or SL and not the other, there are all sorts of changes to files and the system freaks and says "Oh, now look at what a mess I've made — there are all sorts of files unaccounted for. Now I have to rebuild the whole thing."
I have 2 had drives in my Mac, both 500GB. One (Working Disk) has no operating system and all my files, and the other drive is partitioned 470/30gb with SL on the 470 and ML in the 30. When I restart in either OS, the auto-start Indexing as if for the very first time, and do both hard drives (in total: 3 partitions of files, not counting the ML Restore partition).
I know it all uncoventionally — just wanted to see what my $20 new OS will cost me in software upgrades, in particular my $1800 Adobe Design Suite CS4 and a few others.
