RF Predictions in WCS

So I am adding access points to WCS 6.0 and I am using a specialty antenna. When I choose other for the antenna type and I enter the dbi of the antenna when I hit save to place the APs it tells me it cannot give em the rf prediction for those APs. How do I get around this other than selecting a cisco antenna?

Azimuth and Elevation) for the antenna needs to be known not just the power.
Therefore, as WCS doesn’t have the detail for the antenna you’re using it can’t perform the prediction, this is a limitation of WCS but it guarantees the accuracy of the coverage prediction.
It also enforces the point of buying Cisco antennas!

  • Error with RF prediction in WCS

    Hello,
recently I've installed a Cisco WCS server. In the MAPS section I have added a map (outdoor area) and I have dragged the two access point in the map(1 RAP and one MAP) to see the heat map of the signal. The problem is that for the first 2 days it worked fine but now it give me the following error:
Error: Some of the AP's RF Prediction is not yet computed. Please go to the AP placement page and place the APs properly, specify the correct antenna and then recompute the RF prediction.
I tried to do all the suggested actions but I had no changes.
My WCS version is the 4.1.91.0 and it's working on a virtual machine (that I have restarted many times) with a trial license that expires in the next 15 days.
    Thanks

Try removing both APs from the map and saving. Next, go back into the map an assign the APs. If they still do not map then I would look at the traps on the controller and make sure that the AP is fine. I would also look at performing an on demand refresh from the controller to the WCS. You can do this from the management page in WCS.

  • LWAPP/CAPWAP Antenna Gain Setting - label only?

When configuring an AP external antenna gain (from a WLC), is the gain assigned purely a label to show its gain, or does it actually wind down the transmitter output by the dB amount that is input in to the gain field?
For instance, my Tx power is set to 2 (17dBm), and I attached a 2.2dBi antenna.
My ERP would now be 19.2dBm.
Does the antenna gain value I enter (4 x 0.5) actually cause the AP to lower its output power by 2.2dB to cater for the fact that I have attached a 2.2)dB antenna and maintain its 17dBm output? (...OK, I know 4 x 0.5 will give 2dB, but lets talk in round numbers)
    So in summary:
    AP tx pwr = 17dB
    Physical antenna gain = 2.2dBi
    AP configured antenna gain = 4 x 0.5 (2dB).
What is the effective radiated power? 19.2dBm, or auto-lowered to 17dBm?
    Thanks
    Nigel.

This setting effects the heat map predictions in WCS. It also comes into play with the RRM calculations and with some AP's will be considered for controlling the RF power.

  • Need to import new AP models into WCS

I am trying to do a predictive wireless survey in WCS Planning Mode; However, it does not include all the APs I need it to. We currently have WCS version:
    Version
    6.0.181.0
    Host
    N/A
    Feature
    Plus
    AP Limit
    700
    Type
    Permanent
Basically I need to be able to add the following APs and to the Planning mode:
    3502i
    3502E (with AIR-ANT2422DB-R and AIR-ANT5135DB-R antenaes)
    1262
    1142
Can anyone help me with this? I am not even sure how I would upload these to WCS either, is there a cost involved?

Excellent, I googled that and it is correct. For others that visit this discussion, here is the document:

  • Obsticles moving within WCS MAP Editor

I have an issue whereby I import a floor plan into WCS and then open the map editor and draw over the map the wall obsticles so as to have the heat maps and RF predictions reflect the attenuation characteristics of the walls.
I save the map and at a later date reopen it only to find that the obsticle layer has moved or offset to the map. Considering that the floor layouts I have been editing are in some cases 40,000 sq meters in area, the number of walls to re draw constitutes major work.
I picked this problem up originally when my heat maps would suddenly be cut off mid room where the was no obvious obsticle. On opeing up the map editor I find that the overlay is offset by the same amout of the error in the heat maps.
The maps in question, beign floor layouts have nopt been moved in reference to their offset to their respective building plan.
The versions of code I am runnign is as follows:-
    WCS: 7.0.164.0
    MSE: 7.0.105.0
    WLC: 7.0.98.0

No mention of the number of obstacles. I too am very detailed on my map layouts. The only thing they came back to me was that I may have been inaccurately drawing the obstacles by not magnifying the floor plan enough. This was a bit of an insult.
I have had situaltions whereby I can open a map one day and it is out of sync, and next it appears fine ( or almost).
I also have problems whereby i cannot get to the lower right portions of the floor plans when magnified as it is off the screen. I currently have 9 major hospital campuses with numerous buildings in each, some with up to 12 floors. Each floor layour is as detailed as I can possibly make it, and the thought of re doing these maps is somethign i just do not want to go to!
What the TAC finally got me to do was to tunr on logging and record when instances happened. The only problem here is that if you do not know or cannot repeat an instance of teh map going out of sync, how do you record the logging.
As I stated, I have basically given up on finding a resolution as I think it goot all too hard for Cisco to identify the actual issue.

  • WCS Map editor offsetting walls

    Hi,
    WCS version: 7.0.230.0.
I import a map to WCS then open Map Editor, scale the floor and then draw the walls. But the next time (for example the next day) I open Map editor the walls have moved about 1-2 meters. Often to the left and/or up. This mess up my RF predictions.
I have tried Internet Explorer 8, Chrome, latest FireFox. Om rare occations the walls are in their correct place, but most often not.
Anyone had this problem and got a fix for it?
    //Philip

I have experienced this exact problem before in WCS 7 a couple of years back and we are not the only ones it seems: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2040769
I now run NCS 1.1 and this problem is still not resolved, all the walls in my drawn maps gets offset a couple of meter messing up my RF predictions.
I would also really like to find a fix for this or know what I might do wrong.
    //Markus

  • Creating new obsticles in WCS

I have need in the map editor to tag a wall as having an infinate DB loss when predicting RF heat maps. The rooms in question are operating theatres and as such are lead lined as part of ratiation shielding for mobile X-Ray equipment. I am placing 1142N points in each theatre hence still require radiation maps in the WCS map view. Currently the obsticle with the greaetst atteuation is that of a large door with a figre of 15dB assoiated with it.
Is there any way of defining a new obsticle in WCS?

Currently there is not a way to create or edit an obstacle.  You will want to contact your account team to open a PERS if this is a business need.  It sounds like a valid feature to me.

  • Cisco Prime 2.0 to conduct a Predictive Survey

I´m looking for where are made the "Planning Mode" to conduct a predictive site survey in Cisco Prime 2.0  but I can´t find. I´ve already read a lot of documents but I was just more confuse.
I knew that in previous versions you could enter in "Planning Mode".
Someone know where is this inside the Prime 2.0 ?

If your familiar with WCS or NCS, then change the theme from lifecycle to classic mode. You can change this by clicking on the top right in the GUI by the login name:
Prime Infrastructure provides two different graphical user interfaces (from which you can switch back and forth by clicking the downward arrow next to your login name):
Then you can follow this guide.

  • WLC 5508 & Aironet 3502 questions CleanAir, AP modes, WCS

We currently have several 1230, 1240, & 1250 series LWAPPs in our environment being controlled by a 5508WLC.  We are going to upgrade all of the access points in our environment to the 3502 access points. We are having a site survey performed to determine the best placement of the access points and where additional access points are needed. Is there anything else required to successfully run and mainatain CleanAir? Currently all of are access point are in local mode.  Will there need to be a few dedicated monitor access points?  Is there a certian ratio of monitor APs to local APs that should be followed? We've had to deploy a couple of our 3502 access points because the existing ones failed and I noticed that the WCS would not predict the RF heatmap of the 3502 access point.  Is that something that will be addresses in a later version of the WCS software?
    TIA

    Hi Jason,
Just to add a note to the good tips from the Wireless Jedi master (+5 Nicholas)
The Cisco "best practice" for the WCS is to be at an equal or greater version
    release than the WLC. In your case;
    WCS Version = 7.0.164.0
    Supported Controller Versions
    7.0.98.0
    6.0.196.0
    6.0.188.0
    6.0.182.0
    6.0.108.0
    5.2.193.0
    5.2.178.0
    5.2.157.0
    4.2.209.0
    4.2.207.0
    4.2.205.0
    4.2.176.0

    4.2.130.0
    4.2.112.0
    4.2.99.0
    4.2.61.0
    You will see support for the 3500 series was added in this WCS version as well;

  • WCS - Antenna Detection Issue

    Hi,
    I'm installing a WCS solution with 3 controllers 5508 and 70 access points. (AIR-LAP1041N-E-K9)
Everything is working fine but i have 1 issue with WCS and RF.
When i add some Access Points into the maps, some are working fine but others not.
    I've got this message :
"RF Prediction will not be computed for the following APs since these APs have Unsupported (Other) Antennas. Are you sure you want to continue?
    PNO_N0_22(802.11b/g/n), PNO_N0_24(802.11b/g/n)"
PNO_N0_22 et PNO_N0_24 are my access points's name.
Below you can see that internal antenna is well detected on some AP but not for all.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or overcome the same issue?
    Thank you

Wow i just solved it ...
For information I created a template for my Lightweighted AP and there is a field to force antenna type.
I choosed my Antenna-1040-2,4Ghz and everything is now working

  • WCS Heatmap Error

I've got over 90 APs installed and displayed on WCS but with one particular building, neither of the two floors will display heatmaps. Instead there is an error message that says "Error(s): You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding: Error: Some of the AP's RF Prediction is not yet computed. Please go to the AP placement page and place the APs properly, specify the correct antenna and then recompute the RF prediction." This is a new install so it hasn't yet worked.
I've done everything I can think of including deleting and recreating the building and its floors. I don't see anything in the bug toolkit or other postings or release notes. I even tried changing the antennas to "other" and then back again.
I'm running the latest WCS code 4.1.83 base+location and WLC code 4.1.171.
Anyone run into this and know how to correct it?

I thought I'd close this off with the solution I found.
I ended up deleting the APs from WCS and then letting them be discovered again. To do that I had to power them down. It took several minutes for WCS to recognize they were down and then a few minutes to no longer have the check box greyed out. You need the check box so you can select the AP and delete it. Then I powered up the APs. I put them on the map with default antenna settings to make sure the heatmap would show. Then I modified the antenna settings.
I think the WCS database somehow got corrupted when I originally added the APs for this building. The corruption was likely in the fields that define the 802.11a antenna type and orientation.
I hope this will be of help if and when others encounter this.

  • Cisco WCS to conduct an Active Wireless Site Survey

Can I use Cisco WCS to conduct an Active Wireless Site Survey or it does only Predictive Wireless Site Survey ? I already bought a software that only do Passive but I need one to make an Active Wireless Site Survey.
I think that WCS does not provide walkthrough in active mode.
    Tks.

WCS woudl only be able to do a Passive Survey.  do to an 'active' or AP on a Stick survey you would need softare like Ekahau or Air Magnet to go out and read the RSSI/SNR from the AP.

  • WCS Alarm Status shows green but LAP is unplugged ?! Oper Staus shows Down

    Hello,
we are operating a Cisco WLAN environment with 1242 and 1131 LAP. Some of them have been converted from AP to LAP.
Now we took some LAP off the wall.
They are now packed in a box in our storage room.
But the WCS is showing a green Alarm Status for these LAP and as Oper Status Down.
    How can that be ?
Is there a way to fix this problem, because we want to see the Alarm Status in Red.
    Thx for all your input.
    Best Regards
    Christian

This is very interesting. If I try to put myself in the WCS developer's shoes, I think:
    - if you get an alarm for missing AP, then acknowledge the alarm, WCS has no reason to re-display the same alarm. This is precisely what Acknowledge is for, to say "don't bother me with this issue anymore".
    - Even if you manually remove the AP from WCS, it clearly keeps some memory of it, at least for a while. This is something you can clearly see if you run a report of any kind, WCS has to keep track of objects even if you remove them.
    My suggestion would be:
    - Unacknowledge the alarm, then delete it... acknowledging an alarm is probably not the best way to deal with removing an AP. You would use Aknowledge for alarms such as "your neighbour AP keep being detected as rogue, you can't remove your neighbour AP but don't want to hear about this warning anymore." You acknowledge the alarm, WCS keeps it in its database and remembers NOT to bother you with it anymore (exactly what happens in your case).
For an AP you remove, I would not acknowledge the alarm, but simply delete it after having removed the AP. This removes the alarm from the WCS database.
If you ever re-plug this AP to the network, WCS may remember it, but any new alarm about it will display.
    Hope it helps
    Jerome

  • Does WCS come with the 5508 WLC?

    Forum
I am providing a quote to a client for a wireless installation.  I have two 5508 boxes and about 40 AP's on the quote, as well as associated SmartNet.
I was reading how the Cisco Unified Wireless Network is comprised of:
    Controllers
    Access Points
The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS)
    Cisco Mobility Services Engine
    My questions are:
    1.  Does WCS come installed on the Controller?  Is this something that the customer receives simply by virtue of the fact that they are purchasing the Controller?  Or is this a separate piece of software with a cost?
    2.  What exactly is the Cisco Mobility Services Engine?  What does it do that the Controller will not?  How would I sell one to a customer?
    Thank You
    Kevin

WCS is a Windows 2003 application (so not "on the controller") that is completely separate and has to be purchased separately with different levels of licensing for different feature sets.
WCS is most useful when having several WLCs to manage and is offered when you buy a lot of stuff I think.
WCS alone brings better reporting features (graphs, pdf reports, ...) and maps to visualize everything.
MSE is a kind of "calculation appliance" that you link to your WCS to locate all clients and rogues in real-time on the map. Only that. But it's a cool enough feature :-) Without MSE you can only view one client at a time (when entering its mac address in the search field) on WCS maps.
