RGB workflow - really a bad idea?

Hi
Having a "discussion" with my printer - I got back an offset job that was magenta shifted - especially in the cyan of a sky in a photo.  My current workflow is to place everything as RGB, and then to convert to CMY on out to PDF.  For this job I used the ISO coated 300% ECI profile for the conversion, and embedded the profile.  I preflighted the PDF and all was fine, did an inhouse proof  from the PDF (mine on the left).  In house proofed on epson4000
with RGB ink ( in know it wont be colour accurate - but its usually pretty close this is probably a little cyan shifted). My Printer is telling me that the colour shift in the mountains is down to using an RGB workflow.  I dont understand why there would be any difference between
>converting to CMYK profile on export and
>converting to CMYK profile in photoshop, then placing into indesign.
If this workflow is a bad idea can anyone point me to a good resource - I've been looking for a robust workflow that will work for most printers for a while now.
thanks!

Thisis not a technical reply, but may be helpful none the less...
RGB workflow is not necessarily a bad idea, but depending on your printer, not necessarily a good one either. Every printer is different, but with gang run printers - they're not usuaslly bred to be concerned with your color.
Communication is key and the only really bad idea is avoiding or overlooking a complete job dialog with your commercial printer. Not that either is intentional. I would say that no matter what, you should always get a contract proof, but since this is a gang run printer... Try, and good luck.
This is a pretty touchy subject because it is not always just technical. Even the finest of printers are not usually happy color conversionists. What do printers do? Printers print. And they print CMYK. Printers will nearly always take the responsibility for color issues when you supply them with CMYK files.
100% of offset commercial printers (50 surveyed) said they "prefer CMYK files with no color profiles" in a confidential corporate survey. The point of contact in these surveys were prepress. (Now I can get technical with the profiles and excurves, but there will be more of that coming your way than you would care to know at this point, I am sure).
I would suggest learning to communicate well with my printer - going as far as becoming a self appointed inhouse designer. Make them comfortable with you, get comfortable with them, learning an RGB to CMYK workflow either eventually making my own conversions, working your files so all they need to do is run an excurve on their rip or educating them to a level of empowerment so they will want to take the full responsibility of converting for you. Either way, you have nothing to lose by learning CMYK - It just give you more leverage and color control.

  • Bad Idea: Making default behavior of "built in mouse wheel support" set to on key focus

This is just a little rant....
I love new features in Labview, but setting them to be on automatically when they can generate unexpect behaviour is really a bad idea. We recently moved from 2012 to 2013. Suddenly, I have users saying "values are changing and I don't know why". Turns out they were changing a value in a numeric, then attempting to scroll away. Why on earth would NI make this the default behavior??? Luckly for us the value change wasn't too bad but I could think of a few places that a sudden, unplanned change in a numeric could have ruined an experiment.
Off to do alot of work to undo this....

    RTSLVU wrote:
I have noticed this too, but I swear long before 2013.
You should not have to scroll around a user interface to begin with.
If you can not fit a user interface on one screen of the target machine it's time to rethink your interface.
I suggest dividing things up by task and using a tab control.
and this is why I now hate posting in this forum.....
People just love to tell you how you should be doing something, and not focusing on the topic of the thread. If everyone is going to get stuck on the "UI's should not have scroll bars" soap box, see the attached screen shot. This problem arose from a settings pop-up dialog. I could have used tabs, but in this case it makes more sense for the users to move top to bottom in a linear fashion through the process they are setting up.
My point in all this is why would NI make this the default behavior? I like the feature, but it should have been something that a designer has to actively turn on.

  • Is it a bad idea to use Time Capsule to access my iTunes music?

I'm thinking about putting all of my music on my time capsule and making iTunes access it through that.
Is this a bad idea for any reason? I'm thinking that there could be a few seconds of delay when playing a song or something, which I don't really mind.
The other thing I thought is that this could be bad because if my Time Capsule fails, then I lose my music, whereas if I store my iTunes music folder on my computer, it will be backed up by Time Machine, and therefore be in 2 safe locations instead of 1.
    Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions?

  • Is it my imagination, or is this a bad idea? NTFS external as a Mac drive

I've always heard NTFS and Mac's didn't get along too well.
Today I found out that Seagate is selling NTFS drives as "Mac" drives. Here's a link to their spec sheet:
    http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/backup-plus-fam/backup-plus-d esk-mac-v2/en-us/_amer/docs/backup-plus-desk-mac-v3-ds1759-6-1312us.pdf
Am I crazy or does that sound like a really bad idea.
I keep reading about all the "problems" with external drives and Mavericks and everyone is blaming the OS,which now has me wonderiing just exactly what other stunts some of these drive makera are pulling.
Better yet, why can't Seagate format the drive in an HFS format and sell it like that. IMHO this almost makes no sense!

Mac OS X can read NTFS drives, but cannot write to them without third-party drivers. So unless for some reason you need the drive as NTFS for use with Windows systems, in which case I'd recommend ExFAT rather than NTFS, then yes, it's a bad idea. If you get a drive formatted as NTFS and you will use it only with a Mac, just reformat it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
As to why Seagate does that, I'm sure it's because they sell far more aftermarket drives to Windows users than they do to Mac users, so they choose the format that will suit the majority of their customers.
    Regards.

  • Turning on Web Sharing - a bad idea?

Mountain Lion killed Web Sharing but online forums say I can activate it in Terminal.
Is this a bad idea?  Is there a reason Apple killed web sharing e.g. it posed a security risk?

    RogerMac wrote:
Thanks for the reply.  I always turned Web Sharing off whenever I wasn't using it.  I guess it will be on from now on because it's way too much trouble to turn it on and off through Terminal.
The whole concept of "sharing" and "firewall" is woefully misunderstood. If only you are using it, then why share at all? I think that is the reason Apple removed the "web sharing" preference pane. Those services are meant for sharing data with other people. Virtually no one running Apache on a client version of OS X really wants to share that with anyone else. It is better to configure Apache to be always on and accept connections only from the local machine. Then, you are running the services you need, but not really sharing anything.

  • Production Oracle DB 11g on a virtual server. Bad idea?

We will soon switch our IT Manager, he is also not been very professional, so we are not believing on everything he says anymore.
We just got a new Dell R720 server that will host our Oracle DB.
The server hasn't even been turned on yet but we know that the load on the server will be very low for a long time.
One of our problems is that we need to run a VERY important application. Since it is not very resource consuming compared to it's importance we chose to run it on a not so new Xeon 5110 1.60 GHz - 4GB RAM server. He said it's not a good idea and that we should buy a new server. (money is very low)
The software vendor suggested to virtualize our R720 server, host a vm running our database, and along with it other smaller machines like the one I described above.
I suggested the use of Oracle VM, Oracle Linux for the database host and transforming the physical servers servers in VM with P2V.
Our IT Manager didn't like that, he said that it's not recommended to run a database on a virtual machine. But our software vendor said that many of their clients run their solution this way.
What are our options? Is it really that bad to virtualize?

    >
In our case, implementing a VM system is cheaper than new hardware. Not just by the fact that this is Brazil and taxes on hardware are very high...
    >
When you say implementing 'a VM system' you are starting to raise a red flag. Have you worked with VM systems before? Have you worked with the setup you say you recommended?
    >
I suggested the use of Oracle VM, Oracle Linux for the database host and transforming the physical servers servers in VM with P2V.
    >
There are typically a MINIMUM of three components for that configuration: VM Manager, VM Servers (of which you say your DB will be one) and a VM repository. You can merge the Manager and Repository on the same machine but that isn't best practice. The repository would generally be on a reasonably fast storage device that is well protected by a high-level RAID.
On top of that you would typically have some sort-of online failover perhaps even live migration.
So one NUT of the issue are the questions: 1) if your DB is on a VM server by itself then why virtualize it at all, and 2) if there are other apps or VM servers on the same box then if the box goes you lose them ALL.
Implied in that is that you also run the risk that problems with one of your non-critical VMs or apps could take the box itself down and your critical app with it.
    >
Our DB will be acquired, setup and managed by a company indicated by our software vendor. It will be their responsibility to keep the server running, backups, growth management, optimization... One version of their contract is that they will set up the hole VM environment for us, that's what we want to sign.
    >
Have you talked to any of their current clients about their experience with this company?
    >
Apart from the management issues, how much does the virtualization degrades the database performance?
    >
But one of the 'management' issues that your 3rd-party company can't deal with is hardware that is physically located on your site. Above you said this
    >
Right now there is only a couple of guys to deal with hardware problems, everything related to software is done by a company contracted to manage that. Everything is done over the phone and remote access, they are even form a different state. We will soon stop working with them and have an actual IT staff.
    >
Will that hardware be on your site? Will your IT people be responsible for hardware issues? Are you (or your 3rd party company) knowledgable about the importance of multiple servers in a VM system needing to be as compatible as possible in terms of CPU make and model, memory and even the cpus hardware virtualization support?
If your DB VM goes down do you plan to perform live migrations to another VM server? Or do you plan to just stay unavailable until the original VM server can be brought back up.
The performance issues will depend on the type and volume of activity and the amount of data being moved in and out of the VM environment. For the use case you cited I would not expect that to be an issue for you.

  • MAX(SummaryNum) +1 bad idea, but how to use sequence part composite column

    Hi,
My relational mode is as follows
Policy (policynum PK) has 1:M with Summary (policynum FK, SummaryNum part of PK, other columns part of PK)
Basically for each policy users can enter notes with SummaryNum 1, 2, 3, 4.... These numbers are shown to the user for tracking purpose. I need to make sure summary notes for EACH policy start with 1 (cannot really use sequence in the table in the strictest sense) and are incremented by 1. The current Oracle form basically creates the next highest possible value of SummaryNum by adding one to the currently available highest value. In brief, it is like a sequence number for summaries of a particular policy in the summary table.
    PRE-INSERT
    SELECT MAX(SummaryNum ) + 1
    FROM Summary
I am trying to replicate this in ADF BC (using 11g) and know that not using sequencing and adding one to get the next number is a very bad idea due to concurrency challenges (transactional ACID properties). The reasons are as follows.
    •     Using MAX(policy_memo_seq_num) + 1 is not scalable,
    •     It will lead to duplicates in a multi-user environment, whether ADF BC, Oracle Forms, or any other technology
I also know how to use create a sequence in db, a related trigger, and then set the attribute in EO properties as DBSequence. My challenge is that since SummaryNum is not a primary key, and instead is part of a composite key in my case, how do I make sure that summary notes for EACH policy start with 1 in the Summary Table.
I appears that i cannot really use sequence in the table in the strictest sense as this will mean that for policies the summaryNum will start from the next available sequence number, but what i really want is to have it start by one for all policies.*
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,

Not sure if there is a better way, but here is one way. Let's say your table was like this:
        SQL> desc versioned_item
         Name         Null?    Type
         ID           NOT NULL NUMBER
         VERSION      NOT NULL NUMBER
DESCRIPTION           VARCHAR2(20)and lets say your data looked like this:
SQL> select * from versioned_item order by id, version
                ID    VERSION DESCRIPTION
              1001          1 Item 1001
              1001          2 Item 1001
              1001          3 Item 1001
              1002          1 Item 1002
              1002          2 Item 1002
1003          1 Item 1003To select only the rows for the max-version-id, you could do this:
        select id, version,description
        from versioned_item
where (id,version) in (select id,max(version) from versioned_item group by id)
        order by id
                ID    VERSION DESCRIPTION
              1001          3 Item 1001
              1002          2 Item 1002
1003          1 Item 1003To capture this as a view object, you'd only just need to paste in the WHERE clause above into the Where clause box of the view object. No need to use expert-mode since you're not changing the select list or from clause.

  • Is adding /usr/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf.d/00-system.conf a bad idea?

I recently noticed I was using AMD's libOpenCL (the ICD) because its path was being injected through the ld.so.conf.d configuration files.
I had installed another ICD, and was expecting to use the libOpenCL.so from /usr/lib, but I wasn't, so I created a file /etc/ld.so.conf.d/00-system.conf with a single line: /usr/lib, so that system libraries are used first.
Is this a bad idea in general and does this break anything? I know I'm relying on Arch to provide the latest (hopefully ABI backwards compatible) version of all libraries, but this shouldn't really be a problem, right?

The following is said in the manpage of 'ldconfig':
ldconfig  creates  the  necessary links and cache to the most recent shared libraries found in the directories specified on the command line, in the file /etc/ld.so.conf, and in the trusted directories (/lib and /usr/lib).
The way I see it, these directories are automatically considered.
    Edit: Ups, ebal was faster.

Cured the problem! Reinstalled an earlier version of itunes from oldapps.com (version 10) now everything works as it should. I would suggest that if you are experiencing these problems that you do the same. I must say that it is a brave business decision on behalf of apple to effectively lock out all windows 7 users from their products and sales channels and I can only wish them luck in this very shortsighted policy.

Briansyddal - you might be able to manage your phone without a PC, but many of us can't, especially those of us with large iTunes libraries.  How do you propose I manage my 250GB of music using only a phone?  Maybe I could go out and buy 10 iPhones and spread my library out among them!
Catz537 - I have the same problem as you and I've spent hours on the web trying to find a solution to it.  It was a problem with iOS 7 and  8.1.1 doesn't fix it.  The the only advice from Apple is completely useless because it requires you, effectively, to delete and recreate your iTunes library and lose all your metadata, album art, notes etc and there's also no guarantee it will work.   I wish I could be more help (even more - I wish Apple could be more help) - I updated to 8.1.1 at 1400 today.  At 2200 I'm still "waiting for changes to be applied" for a measly 16GB of music transfer.

    Nebraska,
Thanks for your reply. I am trying a home network to see if I can cut down my encoding time and increase my capacity on existing equipment. What I have is outlined in "other details" below. Because of the limitations, I am putting highest priority on trying to find out what has been causing problems with my real time mp2 transcoder nor recoginizing some Quicktime files and consider the Qmaster distributed processing for batch processing files for web streaming. For now, thtis will have to do.
I see the sense of having a dedicated server for the source footage. But I need to do things peer to peer. I use to oversee a WinNT server years back. Its been awhile. Do you would log into each of your G5 quads as the same domain user (or Mac OSX server equivalent)? Is one of your G4's (not the server) the controller? Is the same machine both controller and client?
For the referenced movie I tried, it took many many hours --at least several times longer than if I did the job on a single machine. However, that was when I only had a cluster of two. I might try again with three.

  • MBPR w/Hard Case = Good or Bad Idea?

I am the happy owner of a new MBPr 15" and like many other owners am keen on protecting my investment. The first thing that came to mind was to outfit it with a hard case and being a detail guy I researched the topic online. Turns out many are saying that a hard case is NOT a good idea for the following two good reasons:
extra weight on the screen wears down the hinges which can lead to a very expensive screen replacement.
overheating/heating issues even with hard cases that have cutouts for vents that can cause permanent damaged to the battery and internal components.
Apple sells the hard cases in their stores and it seems that they are divided on the answer with some "Genius" bar employees saying hard cases are not good and others suggesting them to protect your MacBook Pro. Hard case companies are of course saying that their products are safe to use (the contrary would seriously jeopardize the sale of their product). I have asked Apple and leading case/accessory maker Moshi to comment on this issue and will post their replies in this thread.
My goal is to pool the statements, experiences and opinions on the subject to make it definitely clear once and for all if hard cases are indeed a bad idea to protect your Retina MacBook Pro. Do you have anything to say or share?

The general rule of thumb is that sample-instrument samples should be stored on a separate drive. This is particularly crucial if you're streaming samples from disk (EXS with "virtual memory" on, or DFD (direct from disk) as found in other sample-based plugs).
And you'll want to record audio on a separate drive as well, never on your system drive (except in a pinch) if you can help it.
For a laptop, the ideal system would be to have separate external drives for audio recording and samples. If you're working on a tower/desktop model, these additional drives can be exclusively external drives or a combination of internal and external drives.
    My system:
    • Lacie 250G (video playback) FW400
    • Glyph 250G (sample storage #1) FW400
    • OWC 350G (sample storage #2) eSATA (via eSATA PCI-e card)
    • Maxtor 500G drive (audio recording/project drive) -- internal
    Works very nicely!
