RMAN: Switch database back
Hi,
I am having a small rman issue. With:
switch database to copy;I am able to recover a database very quickly however how can I switch back respectively restore afterwards the database to its original location. Are there no other ways to do it file by file?
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers,
David

True, I just had to rename the files and to recover them. Here the procedure:
$ sqlplus / as sysdba
SQL> shutdown immediate

Backing up the RMAN catalog database
Version: 10.2.0.1.0
We have created a database to host our RMAN catalog. This catalog holds backup info plus RMAN stored scripts for 5 production databases . Now, we need to backup this RMAN catalog database.
I am going to use the control file as the catalog (ie. NOCATALOG) for our RMAN catalog database. This should be fine. Right? Any best practices i should follow regarding this?Sometime back I had the same question.
What I decided was cold backuo and RMAN using the control file. (A Belt-and-suspenders approach)
I also do an export daily after all the other backups are done.
In addition I keep an information on it, location and size of all files, a current PFILE (it does not change much), what patches etc.
Given its tiny footprint it would be easy to rebuild given all this. -
11.2.0.2
all datafiles in asm under +DATADG
put database in mount mode.
rman
allocate channel c1 as '+BUDATADG'
backup as copy; -- all datafiles are copied to +BUDATADG
switch database to copy; -- database now using the copied datafiles.
Is there an easy way to switch back to the datafiles on +DATADG without doing a full copy back and in effect reversing the steps?
something like "switch database to original"moreajays wrote:
Hi,
There is no option to switch backup to original copy of datafiles , use same approach for previous +DATADG
Just as an FYI: I played with this for a bit and there actually is a way to go back. When you switch to the copy, go to RMAN and do
list copy of database;
and I was surprised to see the original database files as a known copy. I tried to switch back
switch database to copy;
and it failed straight back over to the original files. I played a bit further, as long as in mount mode, it will switch seamlessly between both no problem. Any changes require a "recover database" for it to catch up.
edit: working example noted here

RMAN-05520: database name mismatch, auxiliary instance has ORADB
Hi,
i am using Oracle 10g (10.2.0.1.0) in RHEL 5 server. i am trying to duplicate my primary database(ORADB) to standby database with name DEVDB in different server. I have taken an RMAN backup and transferred to standby server and now i am trying to duplicate with the below commands

Regards,
007Hello again;
Agreed. You have at least two issues.
Generally I change the SID
export ORACLE_SID=DEVDB
Then I start NOMOUNT using an INIT file.
Then this should be correct
connected to target database: ORADB (DBID=2542358497, not open)
connected to auxiliary database: ORADB (not mounted)h2. Later
I think I was wrong I would like to change my answer. I looked back and found my old notes and things are not as I stated above.
I used an INIT file ( standby side ) for cloning as follows :
db_name=RECOVER2
instance_name=RECOVER2
control_files=("/u01/app/oracle/oradata/RECOVER2/control01.ctl", "/u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area/RECOVER2/control02.ctl")
db_recovery_file_dest=/u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery_area
db_recovery_file_dest_size=4070572032
compatible=11.2.0.0.0
core_dump_dest='/u01/app/oracle/diag/rdbms/recover2/RECOVER2/cdump'
db_block_size=8192
audit_file_dest=/u01/app/oracle/admin/RECOVER2/adump
undo_tablespace=UNDOTBS1
undo_management = AUTO
undo_retention=10800So for the duplicate I don't set DB_UNIQUE_NAME
I Backed up the target database as shown here with the ‘backup current controlfile for standby format’ command:
RMAN RUN {
allocate channel d1 type disk;
backup format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/df_t%t_s%s_p%p' database;
sql 'alter system archive log current';
backup format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/al_t%t_s%s_p%p' archivelog all;
backup current controlfile for standby format '/u01/backups/RECOVER2/sb_t%t_s%s_p%p';
release channel d1;
}I did a startup the standby as follows : ( Notice you are correct about the SID and I was incorrect )
export ORACLE_SID=RECOVER2
/home/oracle:SRECOVER2 >sysplus "/ as sysdba"
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> startup nomount pfile='/u01/app/oracle/admin/RECOVER2/pfile/initRECOVER2.ora';I started RMAN like this :
/home/oracle:SRECOVER2 >export ORACLE_SID=RECOVER2
rman target sys/password@recover2 auxiliary /

connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
connected to auxiliary database: RECOVER2 (not mounted)So you connect to the Primary, but the auxiliary should show "not mounted"
Finally I issue the duplicate command
RMAN> run {
2> allocate channel C1 device type disk;
3> allocate auxiliary channel C2 device type disk;
4> duplicate target database for standby nofilenamecheck;
5> }Best Regards

RMAN and database incarnations
In experimenting with RMAN, I got our team into a situation where a test database would not restore and recover. I performed an incomplete recovery, opened resetlogs, and without performing a backup, did the same thing again.
In any case, we started reading up on how to return to a previous database incarnation. We're not using a Recovery Catalog w RMAN, but 10g has been enhanced so that the control file now tracks db incarnations.
We set the db incarnation back 2 previous, and then performed:
RMAN> restore database until "to_date('9/2/04 23:59:59','mm/dd/yy hr24:mi:ss');
RMAN> recover database until "to_date('9/2/04 23:59:59','mm/dd/yy hr24:mi:ss');
and all seems well.
I have 2 questions:
1) Was the return back 2 incarnations really necessary? It seems like the database would've considered the 2 lines above an incomplete recovery and restore/recovered anyway.
2) Do I need to manually remove the archive logs created for incarnations 3 & 4, or will RMAN know that they are not applicaable? And how does it know they're inapplicable, if so? The incarnation?
Thanks for reading this looong question,

Use SQL*Plus to execute SQL, PL/SQL and SQL*Plus statements.
Usage 1: sqlplus -H | -V
-H Displays the SQL*Plus version and the
usage help.
-V Displays the SQL*Plus version.
Usage 2: sqlplus [ [<option>] [{logon | /nolog}] [<start>] ]
<option> is: [-C <version>] [-L] [-M "<options>"] [-R <level>] [-S]
-C <version> Sets the compatibility of affected commands to the
version specified by <version>. The version has
the form "x.y[.z]". For example, -C 10.2.0
-L Attempts to log on just once, instead of
reprompting on error.
-M "<options>" Sets automatic HTML markup of output. The options
have the form:
HTML ON [HEAD text] [BODY text] [TABLE text]
[ENTMAP {ON|OFF}] [SPOOL {ON|OFF}] [PRE[FORMAT] ON]
-R <level> Sets restricted mode to disable SQL*Plus commands
that interact with the file system. The level can
be 1, 2 or 3. The most restrictive is -R 3 which
disables all user commands interacting with the
file system.
-S Sets silent mode which suppresses the display of
the SQL*Plus banner, prompts, and echoing of
commands.
<logon> is: {<username>[<password>][@<connect_identifier>] | / }
[AS {SYSDBA | SYSOPER | SYSASM}] [EDITION=value]
Specifies the database account username, password and connect
identifier for the database connection. Without a connect
identifier, SQL*Plus connects to the default database.
The AS SYSDBA, AS SYSOPER and AS SYSASM options are database
administration privileges.
<connect_identifier> can be in the form of Net Service Name
or Easy Connect.
@[<net_service_name> | [/]Host[:Port]/<service_name>]
<net_service_name> is a simple name for a service that resolves
to a connect descriptor.
Example: Connect to database using Net Service Name and the
database net service name is ORCL.
sqlplus myusername/mypassword@ORCL
Host specifies the host name or IP address of the database
server computer.
Port specifies the listening port on the database server.
<service_name> specifies the service name of the database you
want to access.
Example: Connect to database using Easy Connect and the
Service name is ORCL.
sqlplus myusername/mypassword@Host/ORCL
The /NOLOG option starts SQL*Plus without connecting to a
database.
The EDITION specifies the value for Session Edition.
<start> is: @<URL>|<filename>[.<ext>] [<parameter> ...]
Runs the specified SQL*Plus script from a web server (URL) or the
local file system (filename.ext) with specified parameters that
will be assigned to substitution variables in the script.
When SQL*Plus starts, and after CONNECT commands, the site profile
(e.g. $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/glogin.sql) and the user profile
(e.g. login.sql in the working directory) are run. The files may
contain SQL*Plus commands.
Refer to the SQL*Plus User's Guide and Reference for more information.

Sometimes when I play songs in Itunes by double clicking on them, Itunes will place the song as the first one on the album. It will chnage the order of the songs on the album, and I can not switch them back to the correct order. This onloy seems to happen when I double-click on the song to play it in itunes. If I just hit play, this doesnt happen. As a result, I have several albums now in which the songs are in the wrong order. Its very frustrating, as this error then transfers over to my ipod every time I sync it. When I choose the info. for the songs, it has them correctly listed (i.e., it lists the songs as being #1 of 19 on the CD, for example). But then the song will have placed by Itunes as #5 of 19 for whatever reason. Itunes does not do this every time, but does it with enough frequency to be maddening. Any thoughts?
The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
or, if you just want a list of de-linked tracks, go to
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
and find the script called List MIA's, this will create a text file listing all de-linked tracks
if you review the thread at
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3633708
also the thread at
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17513078#17513078
you may find more insight into dealing with this kind of issue there, although some of that thread may not apply to your case, aspects of it might help.

Creation of Logical Standby Database Using RMAN ACTIVE DATABASE COMMAND
Hi All,
I am in confusion how to create logical standby database from primary database using rman active database command.
What i did:-
Create primary database on machine 1 on RHEL 5 with Oracle 11gR2
Create standby database on machine 2 on RHEL 5 With Oracle 11gR2 from primary using RMAN active database command
Trying to create logical standby database on machine 3 on RHEL 5 with Oracle 11gR2 using RMAN active database command from primary.
The point which confuse me is to start the logical standby in nomount mode on machine 3 with which pfile like i create the pfile for standby database do i need to create the pfile for logical standby db.
I done the creation of logical standby database by converting physical standby to logical standby database
I am following the below mentioned doc for the same:
Creating a physical and a logical standby database in a DR environment | Chen Guang&#039;s Blog
Kindly guide me how to work over the same or please provide me the steps of the same.
Thanks in advance.Thanks for your reply
I already started the logical standby database with pfile in nomount mode. And successfully completed the duplication of database. by mentioning the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameter.

We are using crystalreport 2008 and BOE XI 3.1.
I open crystal report from crystalreport using hyperlink and opendoc in java. This is working fine if I define db credentials in CMC, but I need to use different databases based on the parameter.
How can I achieve switching database using opendoc?
Thank you.
JuliaHello,
I've created jsp that handles db switch and it perfectly opens correct report, but if I have 2 hyperlinks open and use subreports in them, then they overwrite each other.
What am I doing wrong?
Thank you.

My MacBook Pro shut off three times yesterday after plugging my phone in but I managed to switch it back on each time. I left it to rest for about 20 hours and then today it Has been working fine all morning. Using indesign and Skype which usually slow it down anyway but it's been fine. Then I plugged my iPhone 4S into it and it just shut off again. But this time it won't switch back on. No idea why this has happened but I hadn't saved my work either. I'd not long plugged the charger in to it but now, it's still plugged in, but the light on it is very dim and is just flashing.
No idea what to do. Please help!You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

P.S. its not because of a update to firefox. because it only happened about a week ago, and firefox 4 came out before then.You can modify the pref <b>keyword.URL</b> on the <b>about:config</b> page to use Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" or Google's "Browse By Name".
* Google "I'm Feeling Lucky": http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=

I have no idea how I did this on my new ipad 2 but everything on my screen is in negative view. How do I switch it back to positive or for me , normal view?
Thanks, joneyYes, you probably have the tripple-click Home button option off.
Just visit the Accessibility pane under General settings (as described by King_Penguin above) and choose to assign what you need for your tripple click command, in this case toggling the black & white option.
You can also tell it to 'ask' you what you want from that command each time.
Hope this helps.
