Road Runner Cable - Windows 7, 32 bit - WRT54G v5 (Manually configuring without Linksys CD)

Hello,
My sister recently got a new computer with Windows 7 and has switched from DSL to Cable.  How do I go about helping her manually configure the WRT54G v5?  She cannot find the setup CD.  Support tells me that this model is no longer under warranty and eligible for chat support.  Support also said the setup CD is not compatible with Windows 7; however, the Window 7 compatibility page says "This product installs automatically without extra software."   Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I guess there will be two steps: getting the wireless router to work on her new desktop and then how to allow a laptop to connect wirelessly.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, John

Welcome to the linksys forum, please follow the instructions below.
1. Make sure that the Cable Modem is connected to the router and computer:
    * Cable Modem >> Linksys Router >> Computer
Step 1
Cable that comes into the home will get connected to the Cable Modem
Step 2
Connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the cable Modem
Step 3
Take the Ethernet cable from the Cable Modem and connect it to the "Internet Port" on back of the Linksys Router.
Step 4
Connect another Ethernet cable to Port #1 on back of the Linksys Router.
Step 5
Now connect the Ethernet Cable from Port #1 to the Ethernet port on back of your computer.
The Physical setup is now complete.
Being that you used the Linksys Router before with the DSL setup, you will need to "Reset" the Linksys Router. Locate the "Reset Button" on back of the Linksys Router and push it in for 30 seconds, this will set the router back to the factory settings. You will need a pen or paper clip to press down on the Reset Button.
Note: This factory reset will erase all previous settings.
Linksys Setup Page:
To access the Setup page, follow the steps below:
1. Open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 into the Address Bar at the top of Internet Explorer and press the Enter Key.
2. Once you type in 192.168.1.1 and press the enter key you will get a Linksys pop-up sign-in box.
3. Here are the default sign-in choices:
    A) UserName = Leave this field blank (do not type in anything)
    B) Password = admin

Part 1
1.Click on the Wireless Tab and you will be at "Basic Wireless Settings. Please make sure that you have these 4 settings set-up.
A) Wireless Network Mode: Set this to the mode that your network is using = G, N, or Mixed
B) Wireless Network Name (SSID): Please choose a Name other than Linksys (which is the default), this will allow you to identify your network from your neighbors network.
C) Wireless Channel: Channel's 1, 6, and 11 are best but you can try others to see what works best for you.
D) Wireless SSID Broadcast: Please set this to Enable.
Now go to the bottom of the Linksys Setup Page and click on Save Settings.
Part 2
1. Now click on the sub-tab Wireless Security, here there will be 4 settings to setup as well.
A) Security Mode: WPA Personal = TKIP+AES
                  WPA2 Personal = AES
B) WPA Algorithms: If you choose WPA then choose TKIP+AES
If you choose WPA2 then choose AES
C) WPA Shared Key: Choose at least a combination of 8 or more letters/numbers.
D) Group Key Renewal: this will remain at 3600
Now go to the bottom of the Linksys Setup  Page and click on Save Settings.
Once the above settings have been set and saved you can close out of the linksys setup page and perform a Power-Cycle:
Power Cycling: (Only if you are having a problem connecting to the Internet)
    Step 1:
    Shutdown the computer.
    Step 2:
    Unplug the router’s power cable.
    Step 3:
Unplug the ISP modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds.
    Step 4:
Plug in the ISP modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable.
    Step 5:
Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable.
    Step 6:
Power on the computer and test the wireless Internet connection.
Have a good day and hope all goes well.

  • Time Warner Cable Road Runner With Turbo + Linksys WRT160N Router

    Guys & Ladies,
I'm having a problem either with road runner turbo cable internet or my wrt160n router, I had two different technicians from time warner to check out the problem why my internet connection is very slow they say everything is fine on they're end of the signal.. They figure it's the router causeing the problem due to the fact it drops the signal speed 15% the technician claim when he was looking at the problem.  Here's how I got the network setup: Network mode is selected on mixed channel width is selected on 20mhz and channel is 10...wireless security security mode is WPA2 Personal encryption is AES. The advance wireless settings are these selections...frame burst disabled basic rate is disable...The technician did say the ethernet cable might be going bad? If so what should I buy? how many feet? like 12ft to 18ft?
Anything I can do to make it faster? I tried speaking with Linksys tech support they wouldn't talk to me unless I paid them $15 dollars?
Message Edited by RaveAffection on 09-24-2009 01:44 PM

As for right now earlier it gave me slow speeds on the wireless side while the wired connection worked awesome.  The wireless speeds are around 8.92 mbps download 0.95 upload at speedtest.net the level 2 linksys technician claims my wireless speeds should be higher than that? Since it's Road Runner Turbo with speedbooster.
Here's what the level 2 linksys technician told me to do when he had me on the phone earlier, he told me to change the security mode to WPA Personal instead of having WPA Personal 2 selected and change security mode password, network mode to wireless g and set the channel to 10.. Then he asked hows the signal? I said from 10 feet away from the router my intel pro wireless connection shows full strength and excellent signal and right now still shows full stregth and excellent signal.  He said watch over it tonight if anymore problems call back or talk to linksys chat support
Should I have the transmission rate set on 54G or Auto under the advanced router settings and what about basic rate?
I don't know what else to do to fix the problems.

  • Static IP works, DHCP doesn't with road runner

The boss has a road runner cable modem in his office. He is directed connected from port 2. I ran a wire from port 1 to the downstairs and connected it to a WRT54G. I did this so people downstairs could get wireless access. No one is wire connected to the router.
If I set up the router as DHCP, everyone can see the WRT54G but cannot get internet connectivity. Since we do have a static IP, I set that up in the WRT54G and everyone can connect. That is until the boss uses his machine.
I spoke with Road Runner and they said the cable modem is set up for dynamic IP but we do have a static IP. The best I can decipher is that once the boss signs on the cable modem goes back to dynamic.
But my question is why doesn't the DHCP work? If I unplug the wire from the WRT54G and plug straight into my laptop, it works fines.
Of course Road Runner is blaming the Linksys as the problem.
    Thanks
    Keith

Will you please let me know when you connect 2 computer from the 2 Ports on the Modem are you able to go online from both the Computer at a time.....if yes then you have to configure the Router....if No then You have to connect the Modem to the Internet Port of the Router and configure it accordingly...while configuring make sure you have your computer connected to any one of the 4 ports on the Router.
    follow the Steps as Follows:-
Open the set up page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin and click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
    button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Click on enable
Click Clone your PC's Mac & click save settings
Check Internet  IP on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid IP .... try going online
If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the Internet IP address by login into the Setup page of the Router....checked the Internet IP Address....

  • Not just Rogers - Have same problem on Road Runner in MN

I've been trying to buy an album since Monday and have received the cart changed and the server not found errors/error in music store. This isn't so much of a gripe, more of a 'hey, it's happening elsewhere too.' I'm in Minnesota on Road Runner Cable.
I emailed iTMS support and received a reply the following day stating that 'for a brief time the store was unable to process this type of request. Since that time we have resolved the issue.'
Tried to DL again and got same errors. Emailed iTMS support again and was told 'We are aware of the issue you have reported and are working to resolve it as soon as we can. Please do not attempt to purchase this item again until Monday, November 28th. This will give our engineering crew enough time to fix the items that have been affected by this problem.'
It sure seems like there's something else going on other than Canada/Rogers...

You have said "same problem" but not what the problem is. Which makes it pretty much impossible to help you solve it.

Runnning Genuine CS6 Photopshop, Illustrator and Indesign crash upon opening  without any error message... worked fine then stopped working.  Running it on Window 8 64-bit.  Have tried opening without 3d party plugins, resetting preferences, and uninstalling and reinstalling.

    did you clear the caches?
and onthe off-chance that ID got far enough to leave something behind, find the InDesign Recovery folder (a hidden folder, I think, since Snow Leopard or Lion) and empty it if there's anything there.

  • Reader 9.4 won't open on Windows 7 64-bit

Have a strange issue with installing Reader 9.4 on a new Windows 7 64-bit setup. Program installs without any issue at all, but when opening it from the start menu or opening a PDF document, the cursor is busy for a few seconds and then returns to normal without ever opening Reader. There's nothing in the task manager that indicates it's trying to run. I've tried to right-click it and run as administrator, but it that doesn't even show as an option. I've also tried making the user a member of the local admin group, giving him full permission to the entire C:, and turning off UAC. Uninstalling and reinstalling as administrator or user with elevated priveleges didn't make any difference either. Anyone have any idea what I might be overlooking here? TIA

I had the exact same problem and I noticed that the same thing started happening with other programs along with adobe reader. What i discovered was that at least in my case, the issue was that Adobe Reader uses the temp folder on your computer. Mine happened to grow to about 35 gigs and because of that whenever a program tried to write anything to the temp folder, it would hang forever. Once i cleared my temp folder everything started working properly again for all programs including adobe reader.
the way i did this was from
My Computer -> Right click properties -> Click Disk Cleanup.
It will scan for all places that it will need to do disk cleanup on. Mine took a good 20 minutes because of the temp folder. Afterwards, look through the list of items that it scanned and make sure you select the temp folder option. Along with this you can probably clear out any other folders that are taking up a lot of memory. Clear these folders and try running Adobe Reader again. The process of clearing may take a very long time if your temp folder happens to be really large. But it was well worth it for me because everything started running quickly again. Anyways hope this helps for you as well.

  • After clicking "Save" in "Save as" file dialog, the dialog disappears but no download is started. Is this a Windows 7 64 bit issue? It works fine in Windows XP.

I am trying to download the iTunes installer for Windows 7 64 bit.
I have "Always ask me where to save files" checked in Firefox's download options.
    Steps to reproduce the problem:
    1) In the iTunes download page I click the "Download now" link and Firefox shows me a "Opening iTunes64Setup.exe" dialog with a "Save File" button.
    2) I click the "Save File" button. Sometimes the dialog disappears but nothing else happens. Other times I get the Windows 7 "Save as" dialog.
    3) I click the "Save" button in the save file dialog (I'm using the default user documents folder). The dialog disappears and nothing happens.
If I uncheck "Always ask me where to save files" then the download works fine.
I also have a Windows XP 32 bit with the same configuration where everything works fine which makes me think that this problem only happens in Windows 7 or in the 64 bit version.

It is possible that anti-virus software is corrupting downloaded files or is otherwise interfering with downloading files.
Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.

For windows, first step ensure the services got created.
Start/Run/services.msc and click on the Standard tab (for slightly less clutter).
There should be 4 or 5 oracle entries, only two matter. The database instance service, ...ServiceXE and the listener ...TNSListener the others are not relevant for an XE install.
If the user that ran the installer program is not in the local administrators group, as stated in the install requirements documentation, more than likely the services did not get set up and the database won't exist.
If the services are there, try connecting and check the instance status. In a command box (Start/Run/cmd):
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect system
Password: <the system password entered in installer dialog ... >
    ... Connected.
    select status from v$instance;
    ... OPEN ...
If you get that far, might be something not quite right with the networking configuration, several things can prevent the Apex web pages (http://...:8080...) from working.
As far as your configuration files, the client (tnsnames.ora) has a different value for the host than your listener.ora. So one, or both, of those could be incorrect. Check the command box hostname output, ipconfig /all, a few things might need adjustment.
The tnsnames.ora only matters for making sqlnet connections via a tnsalias. The tnsalias could be anywhere, including on your local hostname. To use a tnsalias, add it to the a connect after the '@' symbol, i.e. connect system@xe to get a connection to your XE specified in the tnsnames.ora file.
If you want to change the listener configuration, the first thing to do is stop the listener, then make adjustments in the listener.ora, start the listener, and sqlplus ... connect system .... alter system register; to get the instance registered with the listener.

  • Does Time Capsule and Time Warner Cable Road Runner work together?

I have Time Warner Cable Road Runner internet serve. I am currently using a Linksys WRT54G WiFi router to use my internet with my MacBook Pro. I am thinking about replacing my Linksys with a Time Capsule. Will the Time Capsule work with TWC Road Runner? I have looked all over with google and have not found an answer. I heard that you can't clone the MAC address of the Road Runner modem. To get my Linksys to work I had to clone the MAC address. Is this true?

I use time warner road runner ripoff and also have it hooked to my vonage router,a linksys with 2 telephone ports and 4 additional ports one of which is given to the TC, another to slingback and another to xbox and finnally he network printer.
The Linksys router , I believe is the main router and the TC is added on as a secondary router ad you choose this during set up, it can either be visible or invisible extending your present wireless setup.
After much tinkering I managed to get it working on the network, the TC that is seen by both my MacPro's and my OQO UMPC that is running Vista. I also hooked the TC up to a USB hub, another linksys, and attached a 1.5 GB Maxtor external drive. I plan to add another so I will have a total of 4 GB of storage.
The main problems I have encountered is my Mac pro seeing the configuration after going to sleep, seems to take a really long time and sometimes I have to restart the TC.
So far all I can say is it IS NOT as easy as Apple would like us to think it is. A lot of tinkering, and you should have a tad of knowledge of what your doing or your going to screw it up. Patience helps as well.
    cheers.

  • Airport with Time Warner Cable Road Runner

We have Time Warner Cable's Road Runner as our isp. They gave us a wireless router, which has been working fine. However, we have 2 floors in our house, and occasionally my computer, that is on the floor above the router, drops the signal. I do have the Airport Extreme, which someone told me I can connect to my computer to help boost the signal. Is this correct, and if so, how do I do that? Because when I try connecting my computer via ethernet cable to the Extreme, it pulls up the old network I use to have the Extreme assigned to. How can I resest the Extreme to work with the Road Runner router account? And is this even how it is done?

In order to extend the Time Warner-provided router's network wirelessly, you will need to set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between that router and the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of WDS...so it very unlikely that the router Time Warner has provided you can be extended wirelessly with the AEBS.
The few that are known to work are:
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54

  • Spartan 3E with Labview 2012 (32 bit) on WIndows 7 64-bit - Error Code: -310602 NI-COBS: Unable to communicate with device over communication cable.

Thanks for the info, Kyle.  I will probably try to find an older 32-bit XP machine.  VM is just not an option for me right now.

    Hello everybody,
I am trying to use the DIgilent Spartan 3E board with Labvew 2012 SP1 32 bit.  I am able to compile the example code for LED shift.  I am however unable to transfer code to the FPGA.  I get the following error message:
    Error Code: -310602
NI-COBS:  Unable to communicate with device over communication cable.
Please verify that the cable is connected to a supported device and that the appropriate drivers are installed.
My system configuration is as follows:
Windows 7 (64 bit) on Dell XPS laptop.
    Labview 2012 SP1 (32 bit)
    Labview FPGA 2012 SP1
Labview 2012 FPGA support for Spartan3E
    Xilinx 13.4 tools
DEFB LV FPGA 2012sp1 support installer
Xilinx USB cable driver v1.3 installed.
I took all the precautions mentioned by others on this forum and others, mainly that the cable must be disconnected before installing the Xilinx cable driver. All software and drivers were installed correctly.  I even uninstalled and reinstalled the entire Labview software set I had.  I still get the same error.
    A few other questions:
    1.  Is the Xilinx cable different from a regular USB cable of the same configuration ?
    2.  When I program the FPGA I only have the USB cable connected between my computer and the Spartan 3e board.  Should any other cable be connected ?
    3.  What should be the correct jumper settings for J1 - JP30 (especially J30, J11, JP9, JP6, JP7, etc) ?
I have been at this or over 3 days trying to figure it out.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Road runner mail (time warner cable)

My mom got a new ipod touch and setup her road runner email account on it. I have an ipod touch also and i have a gmail account and it works fine. But when she opens up the email application an error comes up "The mail server .wi.rr.com is not responding verify that you have entered the correct acct info in mail settings". any suggestions?

I have RR and made a special email for just my Touch.
    It works fine - so . .
    1) Check the email you made with a email cleint to make sure you have the new RR email setup ok (Or go to their web email and check that way)
    2) Double check your SMTP server and pop server addresses.
    3) for mine I have (under Advanced email setup) Use SSL OFF, authentication Password and server port 110 (pop) my smtp server port says 587 here - I think it found that Automagically
    4) Make sure the Server On-Off is on
These are all under Settings --> Mail Contacts and Calendars --> Then the email account name

  • Network slowed down - Road Runner

I've had terribly slow Internet access for about a week and a half now. All my devices are getting 6-8 Mb/sec from Time Warner Road Runner, and I was consistently getting 15-20 MBs.
Time Warner was here today, and the Windows box they plugged directly into the modem was getting 15 Mb+. My souped up iMac, plugged directly in, was getting 6-8 Mb.
The same holds for all my other devices - all iOS. iPad, iPhone, AppleTV -- all experiencing slow Internet.
The Time Warner tech says they've been upgrading software on their modems recently - in the time range that I've been experiencing problems.
Anyone else seeing trouble with their Time Warner Road Runner Internet connection?

We used my cabling, which we swapped out with other cables, just to be doubly sure.
In short, the only obvious difference was that my system is entirely Apple and hers was Windows.
I'm somewhat confident that a change somewhere - either in the modem or upstream, or in the Apple ecosystem - has diminished my performance.
I know that all my network routers - the Time Capsule and two Airport Expresses - were updated. I did not think the desktop received any kind of an update that affected networking. (I have a third Express, first generation, that has not been updated recently).
As my performance was bad when connecting the desktop directly to the modem with two different ethernet cables (and those same cables were used to connect the tech's Windows laptop to the modem, with no performance problem), it seems something is going wrong on my desktop, iPad and iPhone, all of which report 6-8 Mb/s when the Windows machine was getting 15+ and that's what I consistently received before a week or two ago.

  • Eliminating Road Runner

Do I need Road Runner if I have Time Capsule or get a WIMAX modem?   can get a much better deal from CLEAR if this means using their modem hooked up to the TC.  I am concerned about this affecting my TimeWarner Cable HD TV service, however, although I believe they are not linked.  Yes?

That's a question for Time Warner to find out exactly how your service is setup.
If Clear offers a modem that will connect to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable, this would provide the Internet service for the Time Capsule. Depending on your service level with Time Warner, the Clear connection may be quite a bit slower. You might want to verify before you decide to make a switch.
