Robohelp HTML, JBoss: UTF-8 Problem

Hello
We use Robohelp 8 to create a web help for our JBOSS based project. Unfortunaltely, all files that robohelp creates use UTF-8, but the default of our JBOSS is ISO-8859-1.
So, if I open the help using Firefox in the web container I receive only "" and the encoding in the brower is set to ISO. IE8 can display the help in a correct way, I suppose this browser recognize the different character encoding.
The only thing that I can do to let it work in FF is to change the robohelp output html files and add this lines in each(!) htm file of the help
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
To show the special characters in german like ä,ö,ü I have also to remove the charset in the <metatag> of the output files...
But every time I re-generate the output I have to redo this. Is there some possibility to change the character encoding in my robohelp source code? Unfortunaltely it seams impossible to change this things in masterfiles or robohelp pages in the UI
Has somebody a workaround?
Best regards
Stefan

Hi, Stefan. Yes, others have seen this problem - specifically with your ISO charset.
There isn't a fix in RoboHelp8. The solution appears to be to enable UTF-8 on your application server.
There are several posts about the problem on this forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2095270#2095270
http://forums.adobe.com/message/961768#961768
These two seem most useful, but if you're really technical, you can search for ISO-8859-1 on the Adobe Forums. If you want just RoboHelp posts, enter  "ISO-8859-1 +RoboHelp".

  • RoboHelp HTML 8 Search problem

I have a single (non-merged) RoboHelp 8 HTML project in which I cannot seem to get Search working correctly.
I expected to see a box into which I can type a search term and a blank pane below the Contents/Index/Search/Glossary bar where search results would appear.  Instead, I get the following when I generate WebHelp:
This problem appears in IE 6, IE 7, Firefox 3.0, and Firefox 3.5, all of which our customer base uses.  I'm using RoboHelp 8 on a Windows PC with XP Pro 2002, SP3.
In the Project Settings/General dialog, I have the default settings for the Stop List and the Always Ignore List selected.  For "Add new keywords to" I have "Index File (HHK)" selected, and "Binary Index" is selected.
When generating WebHelp, I have the following set:
General selections:  Under "Additional Options," "Apply to all Topics," "CSS" is selected, with the correct CSS name displayed.  "Add Mark of the Web" is selected.
Navigation selections:  For Toolbar Buttons, Contents, Index, Search, Glossary are selected.  For Search Options, "Enable Highlight Search Results" is selected.
Navigation Pane Preferred Format selection is Pure HTML.  (We tried DHTML/HTML but that resulted in an empty nav pane and a nonfunctional index.)
Optimize Speed For:  Web Site (Internet)
    Publish:  Republish All.
What are we doing wrong?  I'm totally stumped and I can't seem to find any help on this issue anywhere.  Thanks!

    Hi there
    Please do expound.

To my knowledge this option only affects the output when you view things locally, as in when you are testing the output immediately after generating. Are you saying here that it somehow affected things after you uploaded the files to the server?

  • Problems importing a Word doc into Robohelp HTML

    I have a 116-page Word document with 13 chapters. When I
import this document into Robohelp HTML as a winhelp output file,
only two topics are created, rather than 13. On the Conversion
Options window, I select to have new topics created by Word style
"Heading 1" which are my chapter titles. Why doesn't Robohelp
create the topics, and what should I change to faciliate that?
Also, why don't my numbered lists from Word stay numbered in
Robohelp? Is there a way to automate numbered lists?

    Thanks for your reply.
When I insert .gif files JDeveloper ends with a message saying "Process exited with exit code 0". I then go and check in the database and I find the image added to the table.
With a word doc, JDeveloper does not give that message. No message at all regarding what the status of the process is. And the document is not added to the database. No error messages too. Could this be an issue with Oracle?

  • RoboHelp HTML Version 10. - OK to use an HTML cleanup tool on RoboHelp topics?

We are considering using a Webtool like www.cleanuphtml.com to clean up the inline html styles in a large number of RoboHelp topics that were imported from Word several years ago. After the cleanup, we can still use the styles from our CSS. Does anyone see any potential problems here? Here's what the Cleanup tool adds to the Head section. It then uses these "internal" styles whereever it needs to clean up the HTML. Thanks - Charlie Kyle

I have not seen any reference to this tool on any of the authoring sites I follow, That does not mean it will not work without problems, simply that there is nothing to go on.
Where I might expect problems in the future is when you amend the CSS or want to apply a new one. The embedded CSS that you have printed will always be in your content. What works today, might work tomorrow and then again...
I understand not wanting to clean up using a good Find and Replace tool but it is the way I would go, with plenty of backing up.

  • Can't create or open a project in Robohelp HTML 8

    Hi,
I just installed RoboHelp HTML 8.0.0.203 trial on Windows XP (SP3). It's the first RoboHelp
version I've installed on this computer.
No error occured during installation the program starts normally.
    1. When I try to create a new empty project the program only creates the folder with
    following files and folders:
    !SkinSubFolder!
    Adobe AIR.ssl
    default.css
    FlashHelp Pro.ssl
    FlashHelp.ssl
    Microsoft HTML Help.ssl
    testproject.cpd
    testproject.glo
    testproject.hpr
    testproject.ppf
    testproject.syn
    WebHelp Pro.ssl
    WebHelp.ssl
At the moment when the new project file should open nothing happens not even an error
    message.
    2. When I try to open the sample project file CCC.xpj an error prompt tells me that the
opening of the project was aborted or CCC.cpd couldn't be loaded.
    3. When I try to import a PDF (File>New>Project>Import>PDF) an "unexpected error" occures
    during conversion.
I already reinstalled RoboHelp and I have administrator rights, but still the same problem.
P.S. I had the same problem on another system with the Robohelp 7 trial some months ago.
But RoboHelp X5 works fine on a third system, I consider an upgrade if the problem can be solved.

Well I tested to install RoboHelp 8 on my machine at home where the RoboHelp 7 trial didn’t work. At first with Comodo Firewall Pro enabled and it blocked the two attempts of Windows Installer to access the internet. ->Creating a project still doesn’t work.
Then I uninstalled Robohelp 8 and disabled the firewall. Installed Robohelp 8 again and tried to create a project but it still doesn’t work.
Also I installed Robohelp 8 on different machines at home (XP, Vista Business, 7 Professional) all running with Zonalarm Firewall and it worked.
But installing a new OS is no option for the company especially when everything else works fine.
Before I opened this thread I googled some time for this problem but couldn’t find anything. This is weird because I’ve installed it on two systems which have noting in common besides both run XP.

  • RoboHELP HTML Freezes Different Ways

Using Windows XP and RoboHELP HTML 6.0:
If I start RoboHELP HTML from the START > Programs menu,
it freezes almost instantly and requires END TASK.
If I double-click a previously created .xpj file in Windows
Explorer view, then RH HTML starts up and I can work in the project
file... but if I try to IMPORT a file into the project file
list/topics, then the application freezes again. I'm only trying to
import an HTML file that was originally created with RoboHELP for
    another project.
    Why does RH freeze up??

Did this by chance happen to start after you had used a dual
monitor configuration? Folks around here are probably thinking I
believe that's the cause of every problem, but in some cases, we
have found that disappearing dialogs and "freezes" are actually
caused by going from dual monitors to one monitor, and dialogs are
appearing off-screen (which then makes RH look like it's inactive
    and not working).
One experiment you can try with either "freeze" that you've
listed is to hit the Esc key and see if RH livens up again. If
there is a dialog open, Esc closes it and returns you to RH.
    Just a thought,
    Ben

  • RoboHelp HTML 9.0.2.271 crashes when opening .htm files

Hello. I'm using RoboHelp HTML 9.0.2.271. When opening a certain RH project (I have three that I access regularly), the project opens fine, but when I try to open any of the topic files, RH hangs/crashes. I can perform any other tasks in the project (generating, publishing, updating the browse sequence, etc.), but I can't open any .htm files. In trying to fix this problem, I have:
Updated from 9.0 to first 9.0.1 then 9.0.2
    Renamed the .cpd file
Imported one of the topics in the crashing project to a project that isn't crashing
Updating and renaming the .cpd file didn't work and importing the topic into a healthy project allowed the topic to open (so the topic doesn't seem corrupt).

Also using 9.0.2.271, I had exactly the same problem: open project, double-click a topic in the Topic List pane... crash.
However, immediately after opening the project I had Windows 7's blue 'busy' doughnut symbol constantly flashing under the mouse pointer. This is described (for RH8) in Peter Grainge's description on his excellent website (RoboHelp > Opening RoboHelp Projects). The same topic mentions the .hhp file, so I checked the contents of mine...
At the very end, in the [MERGE FILES] section, it listed two other .chm files; one which was supposed to be there, and one which was not (Dummy.chm). I had merged Dummy.chm only during the early testing stages of my project, and had long since removed all references to it from my project. I have no idea why it was still listed in the .hhp file.
I deleted the reference to Dummy.chm from the .hhp file and regenerated the project... and Dummy.chm reappeared in the .hhp file!  After deep-searching my project files using NotePad++, one remaining reference to Dummy.chm was also listed in the .xpj file:
      <file>
       <name>Dummy.chm</name>
       <comments></comments>
      </file>
So I manually removed those lines and saved the .xpj using NotePad++, reopened the project using RoboHelp, and regenerated. The rogue reference to Dummy.chm is now gone. I have opened, saved, and closed the project several times and it now seems to be reliable.
Probable cause of bug: I had recently performed a cleanup of my project folder and deleted Dummy.chm, but unknown to me I suspect RoboHelp was still looking for it when opening the project, hence the permanent 'busy' doughnut and the crash when trying to do anything else, like opening a topic.

  • RoboHelp HTML 9 Webhelp Layouts include all (unnecessary) project files

I am currently using RoboHelp HTML 9 on Windows 7 Pro. I have administrative rights on the computer.
My current project contains over 30 different webhelp layouts with 30 different TOCs that are all based on the different functions in a web-based application for a client. The project also includes over 30 different print layouts based on the same TOCs. I use build conditions to specify what I want to appear in the webhelp and print layouts. My project is organized into basically three main folders that represent Tasks, References and Concepts (as close to DITA as I can get this client). Each of these main folders has a subfolder named after a function and it contains the topics and screen captures that relate to that specific function task, function reference or function concept.
I created each webhelp layout in the SSL pod based on the specific TOC that was created for the function. In the WebHelp settings, I specified the TOC in the Content section along with enabling the "exclude unreferenced topics from output" and "exclude unreferenced baggage files from the output" options. In the Navigation section, I selected the appropriate skin that I customized along with enabling Contents and Search options with adding the About box.
With these settings my problem is that ever single webhelp layout includes all of the files in the three main folders, even when they are not referenced in the TOC. This has caused my outputs to explode in size because of the unnecessary folders filled with files (topics and graphics). How can I compile the webhelp layouts so they only output the files referenced in the TOCs and not every single file in the the three main project folders?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated because my client is not local and I have to send these files to them over the internet.
    Thanks in Advance!

"Exclude unreferenced topics from output" starts by excluding topics that are not in the TOC etc. However if a topic in the TOC has a link to a topic that is not in the TOC, the linked topic will also be included to avoid a broken link. It also daisy chains so that if the second topic has further links, that too gets included.
The idea behind this option was that people wanted TOC only outputs but Adobe chose to implement it in this way. I can see why but I take the view that if that results in broken links, that is the author's responsibility. If you agree, then please follow this link and ask for true TOC based authoring.
    http://www.Adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&product=38
Meantime you will, as Amebr points out, need to create build tags and expressions. There is a page on my site that covers that.

  • RoboHelp HTML 10 is taking one of my topic files and copying it multiple times.

I am using RoboHelp HTML 10 to update a reference project with about 1,500 topics in it. Today, I created a new topic with several internal bookmark links. I have edited this topic file several times and saved it without any problems but late today, when I wanted to save the file and close the project, RH gave me an error message about the file name being too long and the TOC reference was too long. This error message repeated over and over so I used Task Manager to kill RH and I rebooted my PC.  When I got RH running again, I discovered 40 copies of the topic file listed in the Project Manager window.  Each file name is a unique creation made up of the original topic file name and one or more of the internal links. Here is a sample of the names:
Ultimate_Data_Display.htm (topic file with several bookmarks)
Ultimate_Data_Display.htm#View_Data (no .htm suffix - when I open one of these files using NotePad, the file contains an exact copy of the original html code)
    Ultimate_Data_Display.htm#View_Data#Detailed_View
    Ultimate_Data_Display.htm#View_Data#Detailed_View#Summary_View
The file names get longer and longer until the 260-? character limit is reached.
RH appears to be parsing the topic file, pulling out the bookmark code, concatenating various bits together and then saving copies of the original file under these new names. Perhaps this is occuring because of some interaction between RH and the version control system we are using.  However, I don't know what version control system we have. I have a "source folder" on my local desktop and RH is doing some type of checking in and checking out of all the files that I work on.
Any suggestions on how to stop this problem would be great, as I have several new topic files to create over the next few work-days.

This is a new one on me.
Have you tried deleting the CPD file and then working on the project?
    Where is the project located?
Does your working environment have a backup tool running all the time, such as Memeo?

  • Pagination issues in Word output from RoboHelp HTML 8

    Hi All,
We're generating a Word document from our online help (RoboHelp HTML 8) with MS Word 2003 installed. The page numbers inserted automatically are wrong in that it's skipping numbers. For example, in scrolling down through the document, the page number after 95 is 97. Sections of the doc are paginated correctly, but then we come to a few pages where it skips a number in assigning page numbers. Some of our users have MS Word 2003 and others have 2007, but the pagination issue is occurring in both versions of Word. (BTW, I'm developing WebHelp Pro on Windows XP.)
Today when I clicked in the Word TOC and pressed F9 to regenerate, it corrected some of the pagination problems but not all (go figure).
Is there a patch I need to download or anything?
    Thank you!
    Mendonite

Do the unnumbered pages have any content? This is ringing a vague bell and it was a Word issue related to blank pages.
Have you actually printed the document?

  • Converting RoboHelp for Word to RoboHelp HTML (v8)

I have a RoboHelp for Word (started at v6, converted to v7, and now at v8) project that I want to convert to a RoboHelp HTML v8 project.
The RoboHelp for Word V8 looks good, works great and builds good looking WebHelp and MS Html Help finished outputs! But, I can't seem to figure out how to embed Captivate App Demos (SWF) into the project. Another post in these forums indicated that this is easy with RoboHelp HTML; and after some testing, indeed it is! Great.
Now - the question is, how do I get my existing (looks good, feels great) RoboHelp for Word V8 project imported into RoboHelp HTML V8?
I made a copy of my RHWord project directory (so as not to screw anything up) and then opened RHHTML and chose to import an existing HPJ project. When asked whether to keep the project file XPJ or go to HHP, I chose HHP.
During the conversion, I get lots of "images not valid; invalid chars" on GIF files that RHWord has no problem with. It will not display nor publish these GIF files. Actually, it does display some of the GIFs in the RHHTML dev env, but then doesn't publish them!
Also, during the conversion, it asks if you want a single CSS for each file or one CSS based on one of the WORD docs from the RHWord project. The default was the former, so I chose it. After the conversion, many of the topics have CSS data that appears at the top (e.g. long list of font names) that end up getting published also. So why did this happen?
Also, after the conversion, many of the topics have non-displayable characters that do not show up in the RHWord version; source or published version.
So - my question is, how do I correctly go from a RHWord project that seems to edit and publish just fine to a RHHTML project cleanly?
I have tried to be as detailed as possible on each of these issues, but if more is required, let me know.
    Thanks much for your assistance,
    Jeff

The original post included a complaint:
"After the conversion, many of the topics have CSS data that appears at the top (e.g. long list of font names) that end up getting published also"
I didn't spot an answer to this part of the problem.  I may have missed it
I see this also in importig a RH8 WinHelp project for conversion to WebHelp. It's no big deal to just delete the font list in projects that have just a single original Word doc, but I have a number of projects that each contain hundreds of Word docs, and the font list is inserted tt the top of each converted htm file.
So I am motivated to find a solution...
    Any ideas RH troops???

    Hi,
I don't know if this can help you, but I had a similar problem while invoking a web service. Eventually, I found out that the server was returning an html error page, and not the expected xml answer.
That's why the client code raises such an error... It means that the MIME type of the anser is text/html (for the html page) and not the text/xml type of the 'nominal' web service answer.
You can verify this by using a proxy to intercept the http request and answer involved in this web service invocation (use Fiddler for instance). Then, you will see that the server responds by sending an html page saying that something is wrong.
    Hope this helps...

  • Robohelp HTML 2002 to Robohelp 9

We are currently using Robohelp HTML 2002 and want to upgrade to the current version (though we know our version is so old that we'll have to pay for entirely new licenses, rather than upgrade licenses).  We have quite a few projects created through 2002, though, and would like to confirm that they'll be able to be opened and modified with Robohelp 9?  Does anyone have any knowledge about this?  Thank you.

So you are moving from the slate version to the digital version and wondering if it will all go well.
The good news is that you will be able to open the project but given the number of versions in between (probably the record number that I have seen), it's just not possible to say whether or not you will hit problems. You may, you may not.
The most likely area is with lists, if you have any. What will happen is covered on my site and it's not as difficult as it may appear at first. We will help you here if you get stuck on that one.
What I would do is created zipped copies of your projects before you upgrade them. That stops you accidentally opening the backup in the later version. You can download the trial version and I suggest you install that on a different machine while you transition from 2002 to 9. Later versions can co-exist although I would still not put a trial on a production machine.
You can apply Service Release 902 to the trial and I recommend you do.

  • RoboHelp HTML 9.0.1 - My images are not showing when published

    Hi all,
We have just upgraded from RH5 to RH9. We are using IE9.  All of our projects transferred over just fine - except for one.  We are able to publish this topic; however, the images within the topics are not being displayed when we publish - we get the dreaded red 'x'.  We can see the images when viewing the topics in RH.  However, they are not listed in the images folder in the Project Manager.  The images can be seen using Quick view and Internet view.  However, they cannot be seen when we generate a Word document.
Every other project is functioning properly.  We can publish everything else just fine.  This one project is our oldest project, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Any guidance or direction will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Linda

    Rick,
Thanks for your help.  I did attach one of my images as a baggage file, and low and behold, the image appeared in my topic after publishing (I'm sorry I thought you were both nuts).  I just hope there is something I can do short of attach over 6500 images as baggage files.

  • Robohelp HTML 5.02 - Topics in index do not synchronize

I have Robohelp HTML 5.02 - when I select a help button from
the program the top navigation window synchronizes but the Topics
within the Index window do not. I tried the solution suggested in
online help but I must have a previous version of Robohelp HTML
because I don't see the synchonize button or the window tab in the
Projects tab - Single source layout - Microsoft HTML help -
properties - Advanced - TOC Styles tab. The navigation window at
    the top works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
    Thanks - Kern

Can anyone suggest how to troubleshoot this problem? This Help project has a few hundred topics and compiled perfectly in RH X5.1. It seems strange that the entries in the Index pane within RoboHelp HTML 8 look fine yet they are not in the right order in the .chm.
    Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cherie Lorenzo
