Rules on cookie expiry

Firefox 3.6.12 with Noia skin. Vista Home Premium SP2 plus updates. AVG 2011. MS Firewall. Using standard user account in Vista.
Example: Google search preferences changed to open search results in a new window. When the cookie expires (usually 24 hours) these settings revert back to *not* opening a result in a new window, then I have to re-edit the preferences for a further 24 hours. A similar sort of thing happens with www.bbc.co.uk where the cookie expires & settings previously set have to be re-set/edited. I have used the suggested settings in the article on cookies. Not sure what other settings to make.

Please ignore my previous post. I solved the problem. I forgot to set the domain and path to the same values i had set when i wrote the cookies.

  • Can a site use cookie info from separate Firefox windows, or just between tabs in the same window?

    Hi!
I apologize for how crazy my question sounds,, (& for everything that follows), but I'm at a loss as to the correct wording...I hope my explanation will clarify things, at least enough so that someone understands what I'm trying to say! Wish me luck!
I'm using Firefox 37.0.1 on Windows 8.1 & everything is up to date. The most important details for this problem will be my settings & addons for Firefox, so here goes:
I allow all cookies, but it's set to clear them when Firefox closes.
I do NOT save any history or passwords & I also have "Click & Clean" enabled, & I use it frequently, even though I don't save any history or anything else, just to add to my security/privacy, (guess I didn't use it often enough, huh?)
I have the box checked for "Do Not Track", (but I just learned the hard way that even so-called "nice" companies don't honor this request)
I have "Ghostery" as well as "Google Analytics Opt-out" enabled, (even though I don't use Google for my search engine, nor do I go to a Google site unless it's absolutely necessary, (I read about Google's penchant for following users everywhere in order to get their preferences, so I avoid them if at all possible).
In other words, I thought I was protected from tracking-related problems, but I need to know if these precautions are effective when using Firefox & having several tabs open...then opening another tab/window...are cookies & any other info "readable", (I don't know what word should be used here), from tab to tab in the same window, (which just happened to me), & is the cookie info readable from window to window? In other words, do I have to completely close out Firefox, delete cookies, then open a brand new window so that any session cookie info has been deleted to protect my browsing info from being accessed?
I know, I'm STILL not making much sense...here's what happened, (I won't divulge the site that did the 'cookie abuse', though.
I had several tabs open, as I usually do, because I was gathering info for research on a report I was working on. Suddenly, I remembered I had to order my hubby's birthday gift, so I opened another tab, (in the same window), to my favorite site & started searching for the items I wanted. I found what I was looking for & was getting ready to check out when I noticed something very odd...there were several "suggestions" listed for items I "might be interested in, based on my browsing", but the funny thing was, I didn't search for anything related to these suggested items! Instead, they were related to items in the other tabs I had open. Scary, underhanded stuff, if you ask me! I always knew not to have banking/financial sites open while surfing, but the tabs I had open were from sites where I was getting research info for my report, so no red flags went up when I went to the site to place my order.
So I guess the question I need answered is...is cookie info accessible only between tabs in the same browser window OR is it even accessible from window to window? Did I make sense yet? I sure hope so, because this incident has me absolutely flapping around like a fish that's just been pulled out of the water & is just left on the deck! This obvious assault on my privacy has hit me like a punch in the stomach, because I thought this site was one I could trust...especially since I had "Do Not Track", "Google Analytics Opt-out" & "Ghostery" enabled!
I just don't know how to deal with this, but obviously, I need to know the rules so this NEVER happens again. Luckily, there wasn't any finance-related breach, but my sense of trust has taken a BIG blow.
If this made sense to anyone, please advise me on the rules of 'cookie abuse' so I don't EVER let this happen again!
Also, is cookie info able to be shared between browsers, e.g. use Firefox for more personal/sensitive browsing & Opera for research activity?
Any & all advice is desperately needed & gratefully accepted! I sincerely hope this doesn't happen to anyone else because it really takes the wind out of your trust bubble. I've never been as surprised & disappointed at a company as I am about this. So sad.
Oh well, learn something new every day...too bad I learned not to trust. :(
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Nuts4Mutts :(
P.S. If you need anything clarified, just ask

Cookies are stored in a cookie jar and thus are shared among all open tabs and windows.
Only all Private Browsing mode tabs/windows use a separate cookie jar that is used for all PB mode tabs.
Note that session restore stores cookies of open tabs in the sessionstore.js file as part of stored session data.

  • To set username in cookies

    Hi,
How to set japanese user name in cookies using java servlet or jsp.
    Can you help me?
    By M.Mathan.

    Vidar,
the FrmReportsInteg has the Reports cookie usage coded in its Java classes. There is a more generic cookie example in the Forms 10g and Forms9i sample package on OTN. This bean - in teh \forms90\demos\cookie directory after installing the demos - does allow you to freely set and get cookies.
The rule with cookies is that you need to find a common cookie path and host that is accessible fro both programs. If the cookie path is not explicitly set then its set to the path of the application setting it. E.g. defining the cookie path as '/' will make it readable from all applications that run from a same host.

Hi, anyone able to help with this ?
We have a CSM-S sitting in a 6513, at the moment we have IP stickiness applied for a Vserver/Serverfarm. The back end product vendor advises that cookie stickiness would be more appropriate for their application.
I have been scratching my head around the timeout of the inserted cookies; whatever I do they persist seemingly indefinitely, for example:
Just a test configuration with a 10minute sticky timout.
    serverfarm applicationA
      nat server
      nat client applicationA_pool
      failaction reassign
      real 1.1.1.1
       inservice
      real 1.1.1.2
       inservice
      health retries 1 failed 120
      probe applicationA_probe
    sticky 1 cookie applicationA_sticky insert timeout 10
    vserver applicationA-HTTP
      virtual 2.2.2.10 tcp www
      unidirectional
      serverfarm applicationA
      sticky 10 group 1
      no persistent rebalance
      inservice
Doing show mod csm 1 sticky
    group   sticky-data              real                  timeout
    1       cookie F5BF7115:F80EA688 1.1.1.1           0
    1       cookie 4AFC972B:BB722437 1.1.1.2           0
Then a show mod csm 1 sticky config
    Group  NumEntries Timeout  Type
    1             82                           10        cookie-insert applicationA_sticky
When browsing to the VIP I see the application page via one of the reals. For the sake of the test I am using round-robin. Without cookies applied my browser will bounce between reals (I turned off persistent rebalance during testing) as expected.
With a sticky cookie inserted the browser stays on one of the real’s, however the timeout which I have applied does not work. The client will stay stuck to the real almost indefinitely (the actual cookie expiry is 2099!).
The online documentation advised that the method I am using should work as expected:
    Quote
This example shows how to configure a virtual server named barnett, associate it with the server farm named bosco, and configure a sticky connection with a duration of 50 minutes to sticky group 12:
    Router(config)# mod csm 2
    Router(config-module-csm)# sticky 1 cookie foo timeout 100
    Router(config-module-csm)# exit
    Router(config-module-csm)#
    Router(config-module-csm)# serverfarm bosco
    Router(config-slb-sfarm)# real 10.1.0.105
    Router(config-slb-real)# inservice
    Router(config-slb-real)# exit
    Router(config-slb-sfarm)#
    Router(config-slb-sfarm)# vserver barnett
    Router(config-slb-vserver)# virtual 10.1.0.85 tcp 80
    Router(config-slb-vserver)# serverfarm bosco
    Router(config-slb-vserver)# sticky 50 group 12
    Router(config-slb-vserver)# inservice
    Router(config-slb-vserver)# exit
    Router(config-module-csm)# end
    End Quote
    I am guessing that sticky group 12 / 1 is a typo
Looking at the documentation, sticky can also be applied not in the vserver config but in a policy (this is how we are doing IP stickiness). I have tried both methods. Same result.
I am natting the client address to a private pool which then talks to the reals (and back). Would'nt expect this to be any issue.
The CSM is running Software version: 4.3(5).
    Any help appreciated.

    Good mornign Simon,
The behavior you are seeing is the expected one.
When the CSM is configured for cookie insertion, a static cookie value is created in the sticky table for each server. This is the cookie that is being inserted, using as expiration date the one defined in the COOKIE_INSERT_EXPIRATION_DATE variable.
With this stickiness method, there is no need to use a timeout, because, since the sticky table will only contain one entry for each server, it will never become full.
    Quoting from the documentation:
    Note     The
configurable timeout values are not applied when using cookie insert.
You can adjust the timeout value using the environment variables.
If you don't want to keep the cookies in the client for that long, another approach you can use is setting an empty date in the COOKIE_INSERT_EXPIRATION_DATE variable. When doing that, the cookie will be inserted without an expiration date, so it will be cleared when the browser is closed.
I hope this answers your question
    Regards
    Daniel

  • How do I download xcode4 from the app store?

It failed a few times during the download but when I restarted it it started again from where it left off. This was good.
However the last time it failed it changed something as when I retry it now it starts from scratch.
It took me about 3 days to almost complete the download so I don't think I am going to successfully download a 4.5gigs XCode file
    without any download interruptions.
I have tried copying the pkg in Library/Application Support/App store so that I can get it to start from where it left off. However whatever I try it always seems to go back to 0 bytes when resume is clicked. This is a trick I learnt in Firefox that I used when downloading previous XCode versions(xcode3). However this does not work for me.
    Thank you

I have just tried downloading xcode3 from developer.apple.com using firefox, and the resume in firefox works fine, even after a firefox restart.
The app downloader had over 4gigs worth of data saved, then there must have been some problem, then the amount of data saved must have gone back to 0.
How does the app downloading program decide to zero out the saved file data? Is there any way to inflence this or somehow make manual backups, like I could with firefox.
I do have broadband, but its a slow broadband. I did have to reenter my username and password a few times during the download process, probably because there was some sort of cookie expiry happening. However this worked fine.  However something went wrong at the end. maybe it was because I clicked the retry in the pop up, rather than the retry next to the app store download progress bar.
If there was a flag or something that said whether or not to resume or retry from scratch then I could maybe edit that and it would help.
What happens now is that when I click pause, the data is written to the .pkg file, which is correct.
However when I click resume the file size immediately goes back to zero.

Does the app store use the http protocol for the download? If true then I should see problems with resuming downloads in other applications(eg firefox). I don't see those problems.
How often does the app store commit the data saved so far. Or what size download chunks does the app store save? 100k 1MB 10MB?
I have tried to resume when I had >1 Mbye saved, and it just started from 0.

I will try downloading the whole thing again(XCode4) and just hope that this time I can get the whole download before it decides to wipe out what it has already downloaded.

  • CSS cookieurl: case sensitive?

    Hello,
As far as I understand, the HTTP header cookie field, and the embedded cookie (in a URL) are case-sensitive. Is this correct?
    The settings look like this:
    content stickyCookie
    advanced-balance cookieurl
    string prefix "SESSION_ID="
On the HTTP header the cookie field looks like this:
    Set Cookie: SESSION_ID=ABCDEF
But if instead of this, the request comes from a client with the cookie embedded in the url, it looks like this:
    http://localhost/Info/index;session_id=ABCDEF?page=home.
Is this field case-sensitive for the CSS? I know it is for the ACE, as I have done this and there is the "cookie secondary" command where you can specify how the url-embedded cookie looks like.
So I am afraid there is no way of making this work on a CSS?
Any help will be much appreciated!

    Hi Javier,
The Cisco CSS is case-sensitive when searching for this string.
When configuring the CSS 11000 and 11500, determine first if you need a server cookie string. If the string operation under the content rule is match-service-cookie, which is the default setting, this parameter must be configured. In this case the service cookie string is matched against the cookie contained in the HTTP header for load balancing decision.
If the string operation under the content rule is set to the hash method, this parameter is not needed. In order to select one of the available servers, the cookie contained in the HTTP header is mathematically processed using a hashing algorithm. If available, the hash algorithm assigna the connection carrying a certain cookie to the same server. This example focuses on the match-service-cookie case.
    Note: Cookies are case sensitive.

You can create a Layer 5 rule by adding a URL.

  • CSS BEA JSESSIONID delay issue

    Hi,
my customer experiences strange delay variantions from accessing the webserver directly instead of accessing the servers via the CSS.
the CSS is configured for cookiestickiness with the string commands.
The difference in delay is as following:
Accessing the server directly: 0.2 seconds until the page is delivered
Acessing the service via the VIP 0.4 seconds until the page is delivered.
this factor 2 can be seen everytime we are accessing the Bea-Webpage. If a certain request takes 0.7 seconds accessing the servers directly we have approximately 1.4 seconds via the CSS.
Turning back to a Layer3 rule is right now out of the game nevertheless I try to arrange a testing window where I'll give it a try using a layer3 rule and src-ip-stickiness instead of a layer5 rule with cookie(JSessionID) stickiness.
Any idea what might be the cause of this delay and how to solve this issue is appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Joerg

    Joerg,
capture a trace when going directly and when going through CSS. Then compare delay between packets.
Take a trace frontend and backend as well.
Try also longer donwload - less than 10sec times are difficult to compare.
Adding a device switch or router will always introduce a delay.
Also, are you comparing just a single GET request ?
The CSS in L7 mode will switch the first request in software and then move the service to fastpath.
So the first request will always take longer but subsequent requests inside the same tcp connection should go faster.
Finally, when comparing the CSS to a server you will most probably see better performance on the server with a small amount of connections.
Give it another try with 50k connections or more and now I'm pretty sure the CSS will look better than a single server.
I'm sorry to say that the current measuring is not very good to validate a performance issue.
    Gilles.

  • Unable to sign up for Azure

    Hi,
I am attempting to Activate Microsoft Azure for my MSDN account and am receiving an error.  I have tried performing this from:
    -  msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/manage and clicking on the link to Activate Microsoft Azure
    - within VS 2013 by selecting Tools > Connect to Microsoft Azure Subscription...
    - manage.windowsazure.com and clicking Sign Up for Windows Azure
All three methods take me to account.windowsazure.com/SignUp where I am told that I am eligible for an upgrade.  I click the Select the Upgrade Offer(Visual Studio Premium with MSDN) and select to Agree and then click Purchase.  At this point,
after a few seconds, I am shown: Sorry, we could not complete the operation. Please try again later or reload the web page.
I have tried this from IE 11 while using InProvate browsing to rule out cookie issues.  I chatted with an MSDN support person who verified my account information and then sent me here.  Can someone help?

  • Where is Expiry date & Rule that is triggered in CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE_M

    Hi All,
I am trying to troubleshoot an issue in the idoc CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE_M.
Segment name is E101CRMXIF_APPOINTMENT_XT under E101CRMXIF_BUSTRANS.
1st node should be populated with Expirydate. But it is populating the approve date. When I try to debug, I am not able to figure out from where the RULE_NAME & APPT_TYPE are getting populated.
    For example:
Under APPL_SNAME: CRMXIF_APPOINTMENT_XT, when I select the 1st node, the values are populated as below.
    APPL_SNAME     CRMXIF_APPOINTMENT
    APPT_TYPE     APPROVEDATE
    TIMESTAMP_FROM      20101108080000
    TIMESTAMP_TO      20101108080000
    RULE_NAME     TODAY
    DURATION                 0
    OBJECT_TASK     I
    It should actually be populating,
    APPL_SNAME     CRMXIF_APPOINTMENT
    APPT_TYPE     EXPIRYDATE
    TIMESTAMP_FROM      20110308080000
    TIMESTAMP_TO      20110308080000
    RULE_NAME     ZDDW_DEF
    DURATION                 0
    OBJECT_TASK     I
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Shubha

    Hey Sreenivas,
Standard provided Idoc will not have segments for Z fields that you add using AET/EEWB. How did you try to regenerate Idoc? You need to use transaction BDFG to generate a custom Idoc.
    Follow the steps below.
    1. Create a Z function group.
    2. Run BDFG. Enter 'CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE' in parameter for function Module and press enter. It will list the available message types including 'CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE_M'
    3. Press Create button in application toolbar. A popup will come. Give a name for new message type. Another popup will come, give names for inbound/outbound functions using the Z FG you created, suitable development class and press enter.
    4. Now view your message type. Go to the idoc type and release it.
    5. Finally selecting your new Z message type, go to menu Edit->Idoc Type and Segment Type->Release. Release your objects. There may be a few popups, respond accordingly.
    6. Maintain partner profile settings. Process code will be APLI or APLM as per your need.
Voila!! You have your new message type having segments for Z fields.
    Let me know the outcome.

  • Cookies are permanantly stored even in Private Browsing

This is at least the second time I noticed this problem. Unfortunately the problem is elusive and I don't know how to reproduce it. Here is what happened:
I use "always use private browsing mode". I have "Accept cookies from site" enabled so that I don't have to adjust the setting every time I need to log on to a site.
According to the documentation, under PB, all cookies are session cookies and should be removed when I close firefox. But today I happened to have clicked "Show cookies" and was surprised to see a long list of cookies. Just to be clear, they were cookies from sites I visit and recognize, like google and amazon, and not any potentially malicious site. But the thing is, they shouldn't be there. I closed and then restarted firefox, but the cookies were still there. And they were not only from the sites I visited today, but also yesterday and maybe earlier. I completely shut down (not hibernate) my computer each day, so it is impossible that this was because a firefox process running unnoticed.
I clearly remember the last time this happened, probably a few weeks ago, I suspected that the cookies were left over from before I started using "always use PB" half a year ago. So I returned to normal mode and cleared all the cookies, and re-enabled "always use PB". So it is also impossible that these cookies I saw today were from the past.
I have firefox 33.0.2. on windows. Checked with Sysinternals Process Explorer, and all modules and signed and verified. I have very few processed running and I know each of them as I know the back of my hand. I have kept my system minimal and very stable over the years and all new applications are run on virtual machines. So I can rule out possibilities of viruses and the like.
I don't have any backup software except Systems Restore that comes with windows.
There was an update to firefox yesterday. Not sure if it is relevant. But I am sure I had at most two tabs open when the updated was installed, so it is hard to attribute all the cookies to some glitch during the update that somehow made the cookies permanent. I also checked Systems Restore and no restore points were made in the last three days.
Anyway, just trying to see if anyone has any similar experience. And if you use PB and always trust firefox to clear the cookies at the end of each session, start checking once in a while to see if you also have this issue.

    Two initial thoughts:
    (1) If you look at the cookie names and content in the View Cookies dialog, are they the ordinary scramble of different names and values, or do they look like "opt-out" cookies? Some security software or add-ons may restore opt-out cookies after you clear them.
    (2) If you have any extensions that make requests to those sites, it's possible they are bypassing private browsing mode, although I would hope not. Hmmm.
Unfortunately, unlike history where you can see the time that an entry was added, it is difficult to figure out when a cookie was set. But there are many cookie add-ons that might provide insight.
Alternately, you could go directly to the cookies.sqlite database using the SQLite Manager extension. This is on the nerdy side, but manageable.
    (1) Install SQLite Manager from: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/sqlite-manager/
    (2) The extension adds an item to the Tools menu. If you do not normally use the classic menu bar, tap the Alt key to display it temporarily or press Alt+t to pull down the Tools menu.
SQLite Manager may suggest a particular database, particularly on your second and later uses. You can skip that and it will open a new window.
    (3) On the toolbar (first screen shot), choose the cookies.sqlite database and click Go. This should display the database entries for all your cookies (second screen shot).
    (4) Select the following SQL query text:
SELECT host AS Site, datetime(creationTime/1000000,'unixepoch') AS Created, datetime(expiry,'unixepoch') AS Expires
    FROM moz_cookies
    ORDER BY creationTime, host
    (5) Click the Execute SQL tab, paste the query, then click Run SQL. You should get a list of sites in order by the date their cookies were set (third screen shot).
Are the dates all fresh? If they are older, something may be rolling back your cookie clearing.

  • Unable to set cookie preferences in safari 5.1.5 by going to safari/preferences/privacy.  It used to be there and now there is nothing showing under that tab.

I had looked at the cookies a couple of weeks ago.  I deleted all cookies.
A few days ago my email was hacked into which sent a spam email to all my contacts.  I changed my password to that account, warned everyone in my contacts, and haven't had a problem with email since.
However, I tried to do the 'delete all cookies' again and when I go to safari/preferences/privacy...there is nothing on that screen under that tab.  Not even a question mark. I changed my history items to be removed every day from every week but don't think that would be the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Uninstall SIMBL as follows.
Select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar, then enter the following text in the box that opens:
    /Library
A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Application Support/SIMBL
    InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
    LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in.
Make sure you never reinstall SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • Everytime I open FFox I find over 400 cookies on my machine despite clearing history, deleting them etc - please help me eliminate them I think they are killing my computer!

Thank you for the opportunity to submit this query and hurray for the volunteers who will tackle it! Thank you!
on opening FFox, I routinely run Tools/View Cookies and clear my Error Console. I INVARIABLY find over 400 cookie directories arranged in two "lists". I clear them with Delete All Cookies and carry on.
I have tried limiting cookie access (ie: no 3rd party), and I have cleared my History including Cookies, BUT everytime I open FFox, they are all back!
I have even installed a Mozilla Cookie Killer plug-in, but though it may work, the little buggers are back the very next time I open FFox.
I believe their presence is seriously degrading my old but much loved Dell Inspiron 6400's performance and I would dearly love to be able to remove them permanently.
If you could help I would be very grateful.
    Cheers and best wishes,

That's going to be a ridiculous waste of money and energy.
First of all, the current ATI drivers don't support multiple GPUs, so at the moment even a single 4870X2 would be only a 'normal' 4870 (which is quite a speed beast already). GFX drivers evolve rapidly, so things might look different next month, but when it comes to Linux and hardware there's one Golden Rule: stay away from the newest stuff and wait for proper support to get coded.
I also wonder what power supply could possibly cope with the differences between idle and full load; that's way beyond 400W. But then, I'm one of those "quiet&green" types where >100W idle is already a bit much.
I kind of understand that you want to get it done and not worry about hardware for the next 10 years or so, but that's simply not how the hardware world works and never did. At least not for the average consumer.

  • Can multiple web pages use the same cookie?

I have an applet that will reside in several different web pages. The applet creates a cookie that saves user preferences and loads them when the user next uses the applet. The problem is that I want the same cookie to load when the user views the same applet at a different IP Address. Is this possible? If so, how? I am currently using the netscape JSObject stuff to write and read my cookie.
    Thanks,
    Derek

Sorry, you cannot access cookie across domains.
If being able to access same cookie from different pages in the same domain satisfies you need, read on.
Let's suppose you have two html files kept on your server as follow::
    MyHTML/main.html
    MyHTML/subDir/A.html
Now, let say that when you save the cookie, the path is not specified. A.html will not be able to access the cookie set by main.html. However, if you specified PATH=/ (along with other values and expiry date-and-time), both html files will be able to access the same cookie via the document.getMember method.
This is more of a JavaScript question than a Java question and you might want to pay a visit to the link below:
    http://forums.internet.com/WebX?[email protected]^[email protected]
you can go to the bottom of that page, click search and type in cookie and you'll see a lot of Q&A on the topic.
    Good Luck
