Run DeploymentType NEWCOMPUTER logged in to existing Operating System.

Hi,
I've read quite a few articles but don't seem to be able to find the answer I'm looking for.
Is it possible to run a NEWCOMPUTER deployment Scenario when the user is already logged into the old operating system / computer.
So the service desk will run the litetouch.vbs from the clients computer and there will be two task sequences available
Refresh: Run Scanstate and install Win 7 on current system drive, loadstate.
NewComputer: Do not run Scanstate, reboot, repartition, reformat and install win 7
I have tried creating a task sequence and adding "Task Sequence Variables" for SkipDeploymentType=YES and DeploymentType=NEWCOMPUTER but it always runs a Refresh with USMT.
I have also tried adding the above variables to the litetouch.vbs command line.
Thanks,
Jason.

Sorry, I know this post is quite old but it was the first thing that came up in my searches while researching and just want to add my 2 cents.
Actually, it is possible to get a new computer task sequence working from the OS.  WinPE does get placed on the local disk, but it is loaded into the RAMdrive at boot so the sequence process does not get lost (at least, this is my understanding).
I modified a standard client task sequence in MDT 2012 as follows:
At the start of the validation and state capture phases, set task sequence variable "DeploymentType" to "NewComputer" to override the script's attempts to call it a "refresh".
In the state capture phase, modify the constraints on the 'refresh only' folders to: "Task Sequence Variable OSVersion not equals WinPE".
In the preinstall phase, I got rid of the 'new computer only' after moving the 'format and partition disk', 'copy scripts' and 'configure' items up above 'enable bitlocker'/'inject drivers'.
At this point, I was getting an error after rebooting in the preinstall phase when it attempted to inject the drivers.  I discovered that the error was caused by the script attempting to find the windows partition as sized and serial-numbered BEFORE
the task sequence formatted and repartitioned the drive.  I did not see where the task sequence variables for this information were being set, so I backed up and modified ZTIUtility.vbs to exclude the search constraints by partition size and volume serial
number.
In my ZTIUtility.vbs, line 3403 now looks like this:
oEnvironment.Item(sTagVariable) = "SELECT * FROM Win32_LogicalDisk WHERE VolumeName = '" & oDiskPart.VolumeName & "'"
In effect, If your OS had more than one drive, or a non-system disk labeled the same as the volume name you assign in your task sequence, you could run into problems.. But this isn't an issue for us.
After doing that, I can now use this task sequence either from pxeboot or directly from the OS.  Now if I get a ticket complaining that the computer is running slow, I can just RDP in from home and it'll have a fresh image and be back on the domain
in the morning :)

  • How can I run Photoshop Elements4 with Windows7. The operating system will not open and run it.

My New computer has windows 7 installed, and it will not open and run my photoshop elements 4  programme. Do I need an upgrade, or can it be run in any other format on this computer.

Did it install and you're just getting errors trying to run it? If so, try clicking on your Start button. Then, go to All Programs, find the entry for Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 and "right click" on it. Select Properties, and in the Properties dialogue click the Compatibility Tab and try running it in XP Compatibility mode and see if it works that way.
If not, then it is really not compatible. Just buy the latest (Photoshop Elelments 9) while they offer $40 mail-in rebate (Ends January 5, 2011)

  • A "Script" is slowing down my computer. I keep stopping it, but it keeps coming back. I cannot update my browser, because I am running a MAC 10.4.11 (tiger) operating system.

I keep getting a message that a "script" is running on my computer. I am given the option of discontinuing it--which I do. It works briefly, then the "script" comes back, I get the message again, choose to discontinue it, etc. I cannot upgrade my browser, because I have the MAC OS 10.4.11 (tiger). I don't know what to do. Do you have any advice? Thanks, and have a wonderful day. Jane

It's from Apple (Mac OS X Leopard Upgrade DVD). I have never gone to an outside source for repair or software (outside of Microsoft Office which is no longer on my computer since I have had these issues).  This is the first time I have required help since my Apple Care ran out.

  • Running 32 bit executable on 64 bit operating system fails

I'm trying to run a test program compiled on a 32-bit Labview (Labview 2011 running in Windows XP) on a Windows 7 home premium 64-bit environment.
When I open this application, it performs some actions, but there is no front panel build-up and then it just stops responding (there is 100% core activity).
The applications only uses a USB 6009 module from NI to gather data and switch some valves (which it does in the initialization of the program, so this seems to be OK).
Does anyone have experience with this problem?
    Thank you in advance.
    Best Regards.

    Hi Bart,
I also use applications build under XP/2011 on Win 7/64 bit, in principal without problems (now). I use a lot of serial port devices, USB cameras etc., but no such NI device.
(By the way, I had to put some few millisecond delays in some serial communication, because the Win 7 PC was too fast.)
Have you tried turning the User Account Control of Win 7 to the lowest level?
(Type UAC in the search box under Start.)
Without doing that I had problems (without notification) working with files in the Programs folder and with the registry.
I think telling Win 7 to always run the application with administrator rights (right mouse click menu) has probably the same effect.

  • Running older software on "modern" operating systems

My computer was deemed capable of running a "modern" operating system, so I upgraded. Now, most of the older CAD/CAE applications I need to use on an almost-daily refuse to be installed. How do I run this software on my new, modern operating
system? Using the XP VM is not a workable solution...

  • System log shows operating system call recv failed(error no.73)

    hi all,
here i have some doubt in system log please clarify me,
here in my (sm21)system log files i find more no  of logs for dispatcher and it indicates operating system call recv failed(error no.73)
    system log  Short Text shows:
Operating system call &5&5&4 failed (error no. &>E5)
The specified operating system call was returned with an error.
For communication calls (receive, send, etc) often the cause of errors are network problems.
It could also be a configuration problem at operating system level. (file cannot be opened, no space in the file system etc.).
    what is means

    Hello,
Yes, you are right, these kind of problems (OS Error 73) are usually caused by network issues. Error 73 means 'connection reset by peer'. In most cases, this is because the connection was interupted by the communication partner or an active network component between.
    I provide you some recommendations:
    - Check your Network environment. You can use NIPING tool to diagnose it (note 500235), check your MTU stability.
    - Check note 27320 - keep alive and gui_auto_logout profile param
    - Also you can implement note 1002075 for a possible solution
    I hope this helps you.

  • Upgrading Operating System in Boot Camp Partition

I am currently running Windows XP in my Boot Camp partition. I want to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out in October. Can I so this with the upgrade version of Windows 7 without removing the Boot Camp partition? I understand that you can't install an upgrade version of an operating system when you create a boot camp partition, but I'm wondering if you can do so if you are upgrading an existing operating system?

Only Vista, and you would need NTFS and do clean install.

  • Need help upgrading my operating system

I need to upgrade my existing operating system which is 10.4.11 to 10.5 so I can down load Pages. How do I go about doing that?

The version of Pages available for download is in the Mac App Store. You need OS X 10.6.8 for the Mac App Store and additionally you need OS X 10.7.5 to run Pages. What you wish to do may not be possible with your old Mac.

  • Report to display Operating system, and AD boundary or collection ID

I found a report on this site that got me close but it doesn't list the actual operating system and version.  I know it should be fairly easy to add but I know next to nothing about SQL.  Basically I am just looking for a report to run
that will provide the Computer Name, Operating system version and ad boundary or collection name.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Collection name would be virtually impossible because the machine will be in many. If you wanted to see all that info for every machine in a given collection that would be easy.
AD Site may be doable. Not sure how accurate it would be, that would depend upon if your machines travel from place to place.

  • Heap Size in 64 bit operating systems

    Hi,
I have written a Java application which needs huge size heap. I tried to run the application under 32 bit windows operating system, but with 32 bit OS I got maximum heap size of 1.5 GB. To get more heap I have installed Windows 2003 Standard edition 64 bit version. Also I have installed JDK 1.7 64 bit for windows. I am using Netbeans IDE 6.7. I have configured Netbeans for 64 bit JVM. With this configuration I tried to set heap size of 1.6 GB it gives error "Could not create Java Virtual machine......". Also If I check proceess in task manager I see java.exe * 32 process. Does this mean JVM being used is still 32 bit JVM?
Please let me know how to get more heap size under 64 bit OS?
    Regards,
    -Suresh Shirgave

From a cmd window run a simple program using a 64-bit jvm (HelloWorld or similar) with different -Xmx values to establish the limit at which the program will run.
<pathTo64-bitJVM>java -Xmxnn HelloWorldIf that's different from NB, then it's a setting of some kind in NB. Maybe you are pointing NB to a 32-bit JDK? Check the value in <NBInstallDirectory>\etc\netbeans.conf. If that's not it, check NB Help. You might want to ask the question at a NB forum, since this is a new version there may be a problem. Note that these forums are for Java language topics.

  • Operating system's affect a exe build

I have an old project (exe) that created and is now running on a computer with Windows 2000 operating system.  I'm not sure what the original operating software of the developing computer was when it was created.  I now need to make some updates, my question is do I need to compile the exe under Windows 2000 or can it be done under Windows xp or even Windows 98 (yes we still have a computer with 98 just in case) without causing problems when it's installed.  This system is out in the field so I would like to avoid any surprises when our serviceman installs the update.

You shouldn't need to rebuild your exe to go from Win 98 to another Windows version.
All you should need to do is make sure the computer has the right version of the LV runtime system.
Is there anything special you are doing like ActiveX or .Net components?

  • Upgrading Operating System with CS5

Hi, I am currenlty running CS5 on my Apple Imac with operating system 10.5.8.  I am looking to upgrade to operating system Maverick and just want to know if my CS5 will upgrade with it?
    TIA

AFAIK, you cannot do an inlace upgrade of 10.5 to 10.9 and even if you could
it's a horrible idea. Do a clean install but note that CS5 is unsupported
and untested. It might work, it might not.
