Running a tv as a second monitor

Hello all,
Just a quick question, I've just bought a dual 2.7Ghz G5 with the standard graphics card (everymac says its the Radeon 9650) and was just wondering if I could hook a HD TV to it to act as a second monitor.
Its a little decadent I know, but it would be nice. I haven't yet bought the TV, I'm in the process of upgrading everything and thats coming last.
Is there anything in particular I should look for - other than a dvi port etc. - or is this flat out impossible? Thanks in advance

And you do need to run audio separately, if you want the sound to come out of the HDTV's speakers. Although HDMI carries the audio signal, DVI does not. The HDTV will probably have a pair of RCA (red/white) connectors for audio in. Just get a mini-stereo jack to RCA adapter, and run it parallel to the HDMI cable.
I've done it, and it works quite well (converting from DVI to HDMI).

I have a 27 iMac and a 24 iMac.

Niel, forgive my ignorance, I am trying to wrap my mind around this.
I have a 2009 24-inch, and a 2010 27-inch. The easiest solution would be to run male to male mini display cable between both machines and use the 24, with the 27 as the second monitor.
However, if it is not too much hassle, the opposite could be better.
To use the 27 and have the 24 as the second monitor, you say I would have to "set up a network".
Is that merely running a cable, or what exactly is involved?
And, after setting up a network, I would use the ScreenSaver application.
Presuming that I was successful in setting up and running the 27 via this method, would the ultimate result be slower than running the 27 as the second monitor?
I do not do any games or graphics, primarily making books with CS5.

Selectively turn off second monitor

I am running 24" iMac with a second monitor connected via VGA (no DVI on second monitor). When I do not want to use the second monitor, I have to unplug it from the iMac so the mac stops using it. Is there an easy software switch or, preferably, a keyboard switch (like a windows F key), that I can press to disengae/reengage the second monitor? I suspect there is something in the monitors control panel, but I don't want to dive down that far every time I want to use it/not use it.

I am experiencing the same problem with a Samsung Aquos 52" connected thorough a Onkyo receiver/amplifier. The connection is DVI to HDMI to Onkyo amplifier and HDMI-HDMI to the TV. The main 23" Cinema Display flashes during turning on an off of both of TV and the amplifier and even when the TV is off and the amplifier is on, unless you restart the computer, it would keep detecting a second display, the only solution so far was to unattach the second display DVI to HDMI cable from the computer. Otherwise, several freezes occur after several flashes of the cinema display and eventually either the dock o the whole screen would freeze...Anyone knows how to avoid this issue? Btw, my id card is NVIDIA GeForce 6600.

If I run a second monitor from an iMac, will I be able to achieve a resolution of 1928x1080 which is the max resolution of my second monitor?

I am changing to an iMac later this year. At the moment I run a Sony Vaio all-in-one and use a second monitor with it. Although the resolution of the second monitor is 1928x1080, I can only get it to work at a max of 1680x1050 so it's a bit fuzzy.
My question is, when using an iMac, will it be able to support the additional monitor at its max 1928x1080?

You are only limited by what the maximum resolution is on the external display. Look at it's specifications, then when you have connected it to your iMac look at System Preferences - Diplays - Display tab and choose the resolution on the external display.

Mac Mini running a second monitor

Does anyone know the possibilites of running a second monitor off the Mac Mini (I am currently running a Mac Mini Dual Core)? I was just reading about this USB to SVGA adapter that was in works by this company called Tritton (http://www.trittontechnologies.com/). I guess they are working on one but there website says that the release of this product has been postponed. Are there any other products out there that anyone knows about?

I'm guessing that my Powermac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 does support extended desktop. My present monitor is a 1600x1200. Can a second monitor of smaller size and lower resolution work as an extended desktop?

Lightroom 5.4 jumps to second monitor when attempting to edit an image in Photoshop CS 6.

I have a brand-new HP z620 with an Nvidia Quadro K 4000 display adapter and apparently a software and/or hardware conflict.
I am experiencing an issue with Lightroom 5.4 window not working correctly with my second, not primary, monitor. When Lightroom is working on the second monitor and I need to edit an image in Photoshop cs6, I want Lightroom stay where it is and Photoshop to open on my primary monitor. And this has worked well for me on my previous system which was also a Windows 7 64-bit machine with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 570.
When I click the Lightroom option to "edit in Photoshop CS 6” The Lightroom window will move itself to the primary monitor for no apparent reason. This is the problem I am seeking to remedy.
No other external editing programs opened through LR behaves this way, such as NIK or OnOne Perfect Photo Suite, and I really need LR to stay on the second monitor on the extended desktop.
I’ve tried every monitor cabling setup I could think of to try and even unplugging the primary to make windows identify it as the 2 monitor in the screen resolution settings, but that does nothing for me. My new workstation is running the same OS version and a K4000. Monitors are currently connected to the display ports via dp to dvi adapters. I’ve already tried moving the connections around and plugging one into dvi, there doesn’t seem to be a setting I can change within windows or adobe to change this behavior.”
On a related note, I have similar instability in software made by X-rite that supports the use of a colorimeter allowing me to build profiles for monitors and evaluate colors precisely. During the profiling process I place the colorimeter in the designated place on the secondary monitor and direct the application to begin showing the colorimeter different colors on that monitor. At this point the colors jump to the primary monitor while the rest of the interface along with the colorimeter is a secondary monitor. I have a workaround that I'm using for this particular problem but I am fairly sure that the issue that causes the problem with Lightroom is also the source of my trouble here and I need to eliminate it.

What do i need to connect my 30" cinema display as a second monitor to my new 27" imac?

I recently purchased a new iMac and want to run my 30" cinema display as a second monitor. My local mac experts told me to use a mini display to dvi adaptor, but that didn't work for any of my cinema displays - the 30" that i want to use and a 21" that I have. I called the guys back up and after a little research, he told me to get a mini display port to dual link dvi adapter. This costs $99, so I want to be sure it's going to work.
Does anyone know if this will work, or if there is a better idea, or ****, does the new iMac even except a 2nd monitor.

Well I may have heard wrong, but I do not believe that you can hook that 6 year old monitor to the latest 27" iMacs with ThunderBolt. I would do more research before putting out the bucks, or make sure that you can return it if it does not work.
But do let us know if you try it and it works.

How to set up a samsung 2433LW monitor as a second monitor?

I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE running on Windows 7 64bit. I have one monitor attached, a HP 2311x connected using one of the two available DVI ports. When I connect a second monitor, a Samsung 2433LW using the second DVI port, the second monitor is not recognised and has a black no input screen and the original HP monitor loses all shortcut icons and only the desktop background is visible.
Please advise how I can get my second monitor to work.

Does the Samsung 2433LW monitor work by itself on the computer???
It sounds like the Samsung is taking over as the primary display and the HP is becoming the secondary display. Try swapping the DVI cables in the back of the computer and see if that helps. Can I use My Ibook G4 as a Second Monitor For My Mac Mini G4

I wonderd if theres any way of being able to use my 14'' Ibook G4 as a second monitor for my Mac Mini G4? I already have a Samsung SyncMaster 913n. Is there any way of doing this by firewire using both monitors, if not what cables would I need?

There is a application called Synergy which you may find useful. It allows the keyboard, mouse and clipboard to be shared across computers, and even different operating systems. It's not strictly what you have asked for as each computer still runs it's applications (and operating system) separately, meaning you can not drag windows between the screens, but by allowing you to copy and paste between the computers, and seamlessly slide your mouse and keyboard input between them you may get the effect you desire. Oh, and it is free and open-source, so why not give it a whirl?
You will need to connect the machines with a TCP/IP network, which can be done either with an ethernet patch cable, or alternatively as you suggest, using FireWire - these two articles may assist you in setting that up: IP over FireWire in Panther and Tiger.
As a point of note, a commercial program, MaxiVista allows exactly what you are looking for under Microsoft Windows.

Want to make my Ipad 4 into a second monitor

I have an iPad 4 and a macbook pro and I want to connect them and make my ipad a second monitor. I know that I have to download an app but I want to make sure that I get the best/right one.
I also saw that I can connect my ipad to my computer and control my computer from my ipad, so if anyone has experience with either of these things let me know!

If you plan on using your iPad as a semi permanent second display when working at your Mac, if you plan to do this for long periods of time, make sure your iPad is plugged into power.
These remote display apps tend to be more of a drain on the iPad's battery. Especially so if the remote display app uses Bluetooth instead of over WiFi.
I like and use an app called Air Display.
For using your iPad as a remote client to run your Mac remotely, there are a few decent apps for thiis, but it depend so what you really want to do.
I wanted remote control of my Mac, locally, so I use a remote app called SplashTop remote.
If you need remote location control of your Mac, also, there are other apps for that like LogMeIn and Team Viewer to name a few.

DVI- HDMI discoloration on HDTV (as second monitor)

Hello all.
I have been having some issues when using my Philips CRT 30" 1080i HDTV as a second monitor via a DVI->HDMI cable. There seems to be a discoloration that occurs (my best guess being a "green" discoloration) that occurs in the top left corner of the screen. It is made all the more apparent when you then unplug, and a purple haze is left in the corner of the "blue" video input channel. (i imagine the green discoloration on the blue channel yields purple).
From what I can tell, this problem does not occur on any other video input (say, a Wii on the composite channel, or an XBOX on the component, etc).
I had heard rumblings that it could be, in order of bad to worst: a bad HDMI cable, a bad HDMI input on the television, or the television going bad period.
Wanted to know if any of you have had or heard of similar experiences. Need to decide soon if I'm going to had to just buy a new HDMI cable, or if I need to buy a new television/monitor for a job coming up.

Problems like that are caused by stray magnetism that cause misalignment of the electron beams from landing on the proper phosphor color. The set itself has a demagnetizer, but sometimes the magnetism is too strong for the built-in demagnetizer to overcome. But calling in a TV repair person to do a demagnetization is, I'm afraid, a throw back to bygone days. But that's what your TV needs.

Using a TV as a second monitor

I'm trying to use a TV as a second monitor (for watching movies) with Windows through Boot Camp (netflix instant play isn't support in Mac yet). When I plug in the mini-DVI adapter with the yellow video cable, my screen goes blank for a moment and comes back on but nothing happens on the TV. I've tried updating the nVidia and ATI drivers in Windows, but they won't install properly. My System Profiler says I'm running Intel GMA x3100 graphics. I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.

Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
