Running first Pro*COBOL application

I am working at a software house maintaining an application written in MF Object COBOL V4.0 which has DB2 SQL statements. These SQL statements are processed by the DB2 pre-processor by our build scripts which is then compiled into DLL's, EXE's, etc.
Our long-term plan (at the moment) is to re-engineer this system using Visual COBOL and use ODBC to interface with the (any) DB. It is a successful product that is still selling well and provides a good source of revenue for the company.
A short term requirement has arisen for the system to use a Oracle DB rather than DB2. I'm not close to the decisions that have been made for this, so I'll just go with it.
We've installed the Oracle bits and I have managed to get the pre-processor in place with the following command line.
PROCOB MODE=ANSI INPUT-NAME.CBL OUTPUT-NAME.CBL
This gives me a new output program that has replaced the SQL code with the Oracle calls. A good start.
I'm now struggling to discover how to actually execute these new bits of code. Previously, our code was previously 'linked' with DB2API.LIB which I'm guessing is how the previous version of the system allowed the DB2 calls to work. I guess I need something equivalent now but I don't know what or where to find it.
The previous LINK command in the script was:
LINK -OUT:%1.DLL -SUBSYSTEM:WINDOWS,4.0 -NODEFAULTLIB -DLL -DEF:%1.DEF %1.OBJ CBLLDS.OBJ ..\RESOURCE\%1.RES MFRTS32.LIB MSVCRT.LIB KERNEL32.LIB DB2API.LIB>>%1.ERR
Note the DB2API.LIB, which is now unnecessary obviously.
The system is on Windows.
I did encounter a couple of SQL differences too.
The CONNECT syntax was different, so:
           EXEC SQL
               CONNECT TO  :WS-SQL-DBNAME
               IN          SHARE MODE
               USER        :WS-SQL-USERID
               USING       :WS-SQL-PASSWORD
           END-EXEC.
Is replaced with:
           MOVE "db1RMSG"  TO WS-SQL-DBNAME
           MOVE "PASSWORD" TO WS-SQL-PASSWORD
           EXEC SQL
               CONNECT :WS-SQL-DBNAME IDENTIFIED BY :WS-SQL-PASSWORD
           END-EXEC.
Straightforward enough, BUT how to maintain? I would like the same program to be used for both versions of the system. If I use a compile-time switch then (I think) both SQL statements are examined by the pre-processors as they don't understand the compile-time code. Any ideas for this.
Also, there doesn't appear to be a DISCONNECT statement in Oracle although I haven't investigated this yet.
Within my 'DECLARE CURSOR' statements I use 'FOR FETCH ONLY'. Oracle doesn't like this, so I have removed them for now. Of course more investigation needed here. (FOR READ ONLY I believe is the replacement)
Any help from you chaps is appreciated.

Razor

You are asking a Cobol language question in a PL/SQL and SQL language forum. Very few active Cobol programmers here, if any. As far as I know, the few that are familiar with Cobol are like me - programmed once in it, a long time ago, in a galaxy mainframe far far away.
Even embedded SQL is pretty much an old thing. Most languages have abstraction interfaces (o-o classes) dealing with database interaction.
As for having a single embedded SQL code base in Cobol for both DB2 and Oracle pre-compiler support... ouch. I do not see an easy way with this, but via compiler macros and conditional compilation.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding..

MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding after every 30 seconds. I have tested by hardware test  nothing wrong with hardware. I am worried Because I am totally stuck with my macbook pro Help me Please !!! I have tested by creating guest account and also new account as administrator. same thing happened. apps running. I opened activity monitor and watched carefully when any app stucked, In activity monitor there is in front of ap name following text appeared : (Not Responding) in red color. 129GB free memory, 4 GB RAM Core i3 MacBook Pro 13 inch.
    Instant help needed..
    Thanks in ADVANCE !!!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Pro*Cobol for Oracle 10g Express Edition is available?

Hi to all, this is my first post here.
I evaluating Cobol to Oracle products and I have find one it´s more
We installed Oracle 10g Express Edition (Server and Client), to test compatibility of a Cobol product.
This product requires the "rtsora" component, from Pro*Cobol, but we didn´t find it in any place in the instalation packages.
The documentation show the precompilers to be at $ORACLE_HOME/precomp but there is only two folders (admin and lib) with "ottcfg" files. Nothing more
Searching this and anothers foruns, I became to think if the precompilers facilities, like Pro*Cobol, may be available to the 10g Express Edition for Linux, OR, if this is a feature available only to the Standart Editions (or Windows)?
The instalation and users manuals appears to don´t distinguish the 10g standart from the Express Edition. Also, the Express Edition doesn´t ask for any kind of "customization oprtions" as I read about in another topics.
    Edited:
1 - We are using this on Linux Ubuntu.
2 - The Windows 10g Express Edition appears to be more complete, but I need to run this on Express Edition.
    Thanks in advance!
    (sorry bad english)

There is no official communication on 11G express edition release date .
You will have to wait and watch Oracle Official website for that .

  • Re: Running the same (Forte) application multiple times -for different

    Hi
We had the same problem - how to deploy a number of identical applications, using each their own db.
    (for training).
The solution we used is to wrap the entire application into different applications by using a very small
module called KURSUS01, KURSUS02 etc, that did nothing but call the start procedure of the main app.
Then in the dbsession connect, we made a call appname to get the application name, and appended the
first 8 chars to the dbname. Thus our dbnames now points to logicals name: rdbdataKURSUS01, rdbdataKURSUS02 etc.
All this allows us to deploy the identical apps in the same env, or change one version, and run both the old
and new program on the same pc and server at the same time (eg. KURSUS01 and KURSUS02).
I also think this is a kludge - but it works nicely!

Subject: Running the same (Forte) application multiple times - for different business clients.
    Hi All
We have a number of different business clients all willing to use our
    application.
The (forte) application is to run on our machines etc for these (business)
    clients.
All (business) clients will have their data kept in separate Oracle DBs
    (instance).
The problem now is that the entire (forte) application is written using
    DBSessions.
Now, depending on what business client needs to be serviced (so to speak) we
need to attach to the right DB - or use the "right" SO.
The two options we can think of are:
    Option1:
Programatic change to somehow "know" what (business) client (DB) I'm talking
about and then use the right DB.
    Pro:
Only one forte environment to maintain
Can run multiple (business) clients on same PC at the same time
    Con:
    Requires many program changes
    bending O-O rules(?)
can't dynamically name SOs so can it be done at all? (ResourceMGRs maybe?)
    Option2:
Use separate environments! One for each business client.
    Pro:
More defined separation of app and data,
    SLA-easy
    Con:
    Maintain "n" number of environments
Can only run the application for one environment (business client) at a time
on one PC - Big Negative here!
Not knowing any feasible solution to option 1 (without much code changes and
developer moaning) I would go for option two; as I have already worked on
multi-environment setups on VMS back at the Hydro (hi guys).
I would appreciate any comments from anyone who has solved this problem.
    How, Why Pro Con etc.
    TIA,
    Dirk Haben

    TIA,
    Dirk Haben

  • Can't compile old Cobol Programs with Oracle9i Pro*Cobol.

I'm a Cobol and Oracle greenhorn - so please apologise my question.
    Here are the details:
We want to switch our db from
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0
    to
    Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0
If I have the "Oracle 8i client" installed on my developing system (using procob precompiler) my program compiles without problems. Connecting to our old 8i db works fine.
On connecting to our new 9i db my program crashes on the first EXEC SQL statement with:
114 Attempt to access item beyond bounds of memory
So I have installed the "Oracle 9i client" to use the new precompiler
    Pro*COBOL: Release 9.2.0.1.0
BUT now I can't execute my program because procob inserts some CALL "ORASQL8" which doesn't exist in my Oracle installation. Maybe ORASQL9 would work, because there are some files with this name in my Oracle dir.
How can I make my NET Express Version 3.1.11 Service Pack 1 work together with Oracle9i?
Here are my current (old) Precompilersettings from the file cobol.dir:
    p(cobsql) csqlt=ora8 cbl2ora8 sqldebug end-c ireclen=132 oreclen=132 maxliteral=160 picx=varchar2 p(cp) sy endp copyext (pco,cbl,cpy,cob) osext(pco);
This forum is my last resort. Maybe anyone can help?
    Thanks in advance
    lual

    ...solved by myself.
After wasting a lot of time, i've found a quick and dirty solution...
    C:\oracle9i\bin\ORASQL9.DLL
    duplicated and renamed to ORASQL8.DLL
    C:\oracle9i\precomp\lib\msvc\oraSQL9.LIB
    duplicated and renamed to oraSQL8.LIB
    C:\oracle9i\precomp\lib\orasql9.lib
    duplicated and renamed to orasql8.lib
...now my old programs run again without errors.

  • Pro*COBOL not getting instaled on Fedora 14

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle 11gr2 on Fedora 14 x86_64 system,. But the Pro*COBOL pre compiler which automatically comes with Oracle is not getting installed (Instead Proc is available. I dont know why). I have the entire application coded in embeded SQL-COBOL programs. I am stuck here, unable to preprocess my programs.
Please suggest me the procedure to resolve. Thanks in advance.
Note: In "Advanced Install" option I could not find "custom instal"l or a provision to select "precompilers" but other DBA related things found

    David,
Can you try passing in the 1.5 VM location manually as listed below
    WorkshopInstaller.exe LAX_VM d:\bea\9server\jdk150_04\bin\java.exe
Can you also make sure that the 1.5 JVM value entry is the first entry in the PATH environment variable.
    cheers

  • A cobol application and linux driver

    Hi,
I'm trying to make work a tiny-cobol application that has embeded sql senteces and queries data from an Oracle Database 9.2, on the same machine with a Linux Advanced Server 8.2 platform.
If these two were intalled on a Windows platform, an ODBC driver would be the middle device that would make them have communication. so, what is the appropiate tool on linux that would make a cobol application retrieve data from an Oracle database?

Actually, ODBC is not needed at all to talk to Oracle. In fact, its a poor choice. You are much better off using Oracle's built-in networking. Just get all the Oracle client software installed on the computer where the program will be running to connect to Oracle. Use Pro*COBOL to develop the software and everything should be taken care of for you. If the client is not the same as the host computer, you'll need to sync up your tnsnames.ora file (in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin) between your client computers.

  • Problems with Pro*Cobol on 10g

    Hi ,
We are trying to migrate from 9i to 10g. We were using pro*cobol 1.8. Now we are facing many problems while compiling and running these programs on Pro*COBOL: Release 10.2.0.2.0.
Are there any migration guides available which might have the specific changes to be done.
    Thanks

    Hi 985004,
This forum if for Web Services. I think you would have more luck posting to the APEX forum:

  • Running Acrobat Pro X 1st de-serialises CS 5.5!

    Hi Everyone,
When you run Arobat Pro X before the other Master Collection CS5.5 products it de-serialises the whole suite!!
In CS4 they had a safe guard which would ask for the user to run another creative suite product first....which was fine! Now that its gone.. it breaks the serialisation of the entire suite.
Does anyone know of a fix/workaround anything?? I have 800 students who would love nothing more than to make more work for me, by deliberately opening acrobat first.
    Matt

    Hi,
    I FINALLY solved this today!
Turns out that the master collection serial isnt sufficient to serialise acrobat pro. Adobe had to give me a serial key specifically for Acrobat Pro X. This Is what I did in the end:
1.) Create a deployment package for Adobe Acrobat Pro X using the "Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition" (AAMEE) and only select Acobat Pro X from all the CS products.
2.) Use the Adobe Customisation Wizard X to modify the Acropro.msi in the Exceptions folder and enter the serial number Adobe provide for Acrobat Pro X under the "Personalisation Options", set any other things you want here.
3.) Create a second Deplyment package for all the Creative Suite Products EXCLUDING ACROBAT PRO X.
4.) Add these packages to SCCM. Make sure when you add the command line for acrobat that you call the TRANSFORMS file in the acrobat working directory. In my case its called acropro.mst. The command line should look something like   "msiexec.exe /i acropro.msi TRANSFORMS=acropro.mst /qn"
5.) Add Acrobat Pro X to your task sequence and be sure to install acrobat first. Then add the Creative Suite to the task sequence
All done... should deploy without issue and it doesnt matter if you open Acrobat or a creative suite product 1st. The products stay serialised!
Thanks to Jatin Dembla, Nirvek and Michael Savanis at Adobe for their support.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am not able to run a Windows Azure application

I have a very strange issue.
I am not able to run a windows azure application which has a WCF service and mschart in it. Following are the steps to reproduce the error:
    1) Create a new windowsazureapplication with a blank asp.net webrole
    2) Now add a new WCfService
    3) run to check it runs ok
    http://i.stack.imgur.com/1g6gW.png
    4) now in one of the pages include mschart, and open the design of the page to make sure the webconfig is changed to use the mschart.
    5) now try to run the project.
I am getting error message like this one:
    enter image description here
Is this a problem with windows azure or am I doing somthing wrong?
FYI: This is not my first project on windows azure.
    RuchitRami

As far as I know Toshiba doesnt support such Microsoft stuff so I think Microsoft is the right adres for such issues.
Have you already checked what Microsoft say about that?

    UpperFilters: Cdralw2k (8.0.0.212), GEARAspiWDM (2.0.6.1),
hmmmm. you've got rather a lot of burning software entries in there. (it looks like you've got some kind of Roxio product installed, as well as itunes and Alcohol 120%.)
by way of experiment, try the technique described in the following document (remember to take a backup of your device filter registry keys first).
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters
do you still get the itunes message with just the iTunes filters in place?

Simple: If it doesn't show up, your system doesn't support it. Both programs require a 64bit operating system like windows 7 or OSX 10.6.8 at least.
