Running Oracle 10g Express without Web connection.

Hello Oracle Users/Friends
I previously used Oracle 8i on an older machine running Windows 98. No web connections required to run database. Have just installed Oracle 10g Express Edition on newer machine running XP Pro. Suddenly Web connections required for database Homepage etc. All cool. But, I just want to start database without requiring Web connections to practise plsql stuff.
It is probably an easy configuration somewhere, but could someone just explain how to start/run database without Web connection?
I also want to run the database from laptop while travelling on train and hence want to navigate through all features of Oracle 10g without web connection.
I guess a further question is simply what is the advantage of the database connecting to Web for someone like myself who is just wanting to run all queries etc locally on the base PC?
Would appreciate advice on this matter.

Well, when installing XE out of the box, all remote connections from other machines are disallowed by default.
Thus only you can access the management user interface of XE. The GUI is run in a web browser, thus you will need the web connection for yourself on your local machine. This is a very good reason to have the web connection enabled ;).
In order to disallow any web connections (even from your local machine) you can use dbms_xdb.sethttpport('0'); ( http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/01/xe-changing-default-http-port.html ) .

Installing and Running Oracle 10g Express Edition on Microsoft Vista

My computer is running on Microsoft Vista.
I downloaded Oracle 10g Express Edition for Vista.
I ran the setup.exe. Everything went well there.
But, when I open the SQLPlus program, a window prompts me to enter my username, password and host string.
Can someone please tell me what it is expecting for these fields? I am using the same username and password I used to create my Oracle account.
But what is the host string?

Waited half a day to download Oracle 10g Express

Trying to download Oracle 10g Express. Web browser is always waiting for download.oracle.com.
The download finally did start, after HALF A DAY, for a 211 MB rpm.
Download of Oracle 11g starts immediately.
Now I'm too tired to install the !#!# software !

Exactly the same problem for me, just having much less patience than you, so i gave up.

Java Connection Pooling issue with Oracle 10g Express Edition

Hello
I have a Java based web application that uses the Oracle 10g Express Edition database. I am using a connection pool to get connections to the database.
I use the NetBeans IDE and run my web application on the bundled Tomcat server(5.5.7) that comes with the IDE. Though when I initially run the application from the IDE, the connection pool is set up fine, when I recompile my java code and try to run the application again, I get the following error each time:
Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12516, TNS:listener could not find available handler with the
matching protocol stack.
The logs before the error shows up, indicate that the connection pool object is fine and gives me the number of available connections and the number of active connections and so on, which I have printed from the constructor of the Connection Pool class:
For e.g.:
Cache size = 17
Available Connections = 17
Cache Limit = 1000
Active size = 0
However, if I kill my Tomcat server process and run the application again, it works fine with no error.
I looked around for possible causes and solutions and all I could find
was increasing the processes parameter value in the init.ora file. I have increased the parameter value to from 100 to 20000 now, in increments of 500/1000 each time but it hasnt worked so far.
Someone else suggested that I increase the size of my connection pool; I initially had it set to a minimum limit of 5, an initial limit of 10 and a maximum limit of 1000. However if I set the Initial Limit to anything above 17 connections, I see the following log on the Bundled Tomcat log and my application doesn't run at all:
Log: Loading JDBC Driver : class=oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver ...

Log: Connection with URL=jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:xe as username/password
Error code not handled : 0
Exception Message :java.sql.SQLException: Listener refused the connection with the following error:
ORA-12519, TNS: no appropriate service handler found
The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
localhost:1521:xe

And the Bundled Tomcat server automatically shuts down.
Again the System.out statements from the Connection Pool class constructor show that the cache has been initialized and that currently there are free connections available in the pool.
E.g.
Cache size = 18
Available Connections = 18
Cache Limit = 1000
Active size = 0
Has anyone faced anything similar? Could someone please suggest what I'm doing wrong here and what I should do to set right this problem?

Are there any problems running oracle database express 10g on an windows 2000 server or advanced server running iis 5?
Does oracle database express cause any conflicts with iis (because of used ports etc)
Could an server have running on it, both an website using iis and an oracle database express website without conflicts?

I would not expect a problem under normal circumstances.
Oracle's listener is set for a default port 1521 for database requests, port 8080 for HTMLDB requests. The database connections generally find an empty port above 1024 when establishing a connection.
So, if IIS does not want to use 1521 or 8080, you will generally see no challenges. Even then it is fairly easy to move ORacle's port requirements elsewhere.
Using port 8080 seems reasonably common, but that is easily changed - search for sethttpport in this forum. IIS tromping on 1521 would be rare as it has been a well known Oracle service port since, roughly, forever.

Max connections in Oracle 10g Express

I format the test PC, install the O.S. and install Oracle 10g Express and run the following code:

Final report:
With the same hardware (1GB RAM) and O.S. (Windows XP Professional) test, the Oracle 10g Express has any restrictions at the question max connections.

Unable to connect Oracle 10g Express from Visual Studio Server Explorer

Hello,
Please help me out here. I am connecting from Visual Studio 2008 to Oracle 10g Express Edition and the I have installed the ODAC 11 and the ODP.NET as well for Visual Studio(Both include Oracle Developer tools). But whenever I tried to connect from my Visual Studio 2008 server explorer so that I can have the database and its object there, I do get this error : "ORA-12560 : TNS: protocol adapter error."
The following is what I specified in my connection box:
DataSource Name: (Local Database)
Username : HR
Password: the password for it.
My OS is : Windows Vista Ultimate.
Please anyone who has solved such error should just help out here.

Thank you for your reply. I will like to know if you can use Visual Studio. In visual studio there is what we called Server Explorer and from there you can create connection and access all the database server from there. I am able to connect to the Oracle XE through the browser and I was able to crete table and other stuffs like that but when I tried to connect from Visual Studio 2008, I get the 12560 Error. Running Multiple queries in Oracle 10g Express Edition! Help Me!

I am new to Oracle 10g Express Edition.
I used my browser to navigated to http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex
I saw the database page.. logged in.. went into the SQL section.. now am not able to run two or more queries at the same time.. i have given a screenshot too. Plz.. check it and reply me quickly..

There are two possibilities:
1) Run the SQL commands, one command at a time;
2) Create a script of multiple commands, and run the script.

Just modifying the processes parameter is sufficient. The sessions parameter will be adjusted automatically.

Can not connect Oracle 10g express edition from report builder.

I have newly installed report builder . Different home was selected for Report builder and oracle. Oracle database server is also in the same machine. But i am not able to connect my oracle 10g express edition database. It throws error ORA-12154 : TNS could not resolve service name.( same error displayed while trying to connect from SQL Plus).But from toad i am able to access the database. May be because here I am able to select the proper home.

Oracle 10g XE is rather specific and, I'm not sure that you can upgrade it to 10.2.0.4 .
However, Oracle published an Upgrade Guide for Oracle Express Edition but, it's limited to *10.2.0.3*:

But be careful:
Once you have upgraded to Oracle Database 10g, you cannot downgrade back to Oracle Database Express Edition.Hope this help.

Connecting oracle 10g express edition to jdeveloper

I am having all kinds of problems connecting oracle 10g express edition with my jdeveloper 10.1.3.3. I can query the database from my command line so I know it is set up, but for whatever reason jdeveloper will not connect with it. When I try to connect with the database through jdeveloper here is the error I keep getting:
Listener refused the connection with the following error:

This has to be some kind of bug with 10g express because I see lots of people having similar problems. I'm in the process of uninstalling 10g, and I will re-install it see if that makes a difference. Again if anyone has any other ideas please keep them coming because this is utter BS it shouldn't be this hard.
