Safari 4 - Customize Toolbar not being remembered.

Okay so I downloaded the new Safari 4, and as always found that I really don't like the default toolbar mainly cause the home button is never one of the default buttons among other ones.
I do the old control click, and customize toolbar.
I set it up exactly how I want.
At some point I quit Safari, the next time I open Safari the toolbar reverts back to the default Safari toolbar, so every time I open up Safari I have to reset my tool bar, or just don't quit safari.
There has to be something I'm missing here.. Anyone know what is wrong and why I have to keep doing this every time I open up Safari again?
-Stuart

Hi Stuart
Welcome to Apple Discussions
May be a corrupted preference file. Via the Finder: move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the desktop and restart Safari. You can find this file in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. Restart Safari.
This resets Safari preferences to default values. You'll need to reset any custom preferences settings, as well as any special settings in the Edit (spelling) or View menu (custom icons, status bar, etc.)
Also, reset the toolbar to your liking. Quit/restart Safari.

  • Customize Toolbar not constantly working, have tried Safari View Customize Toolbar to no avail.  Thnx in advance.r... Drag your favorite item into the toolbar...

Customize Toolbar has been very "hit & miss" lately, attempts to add Google Search are failing.  I am using "Safari>View>Customize Toolbar> Drag" with little success.
Any suggestions appreciated, thankx in advance.

Ah - I read your initial question as to how to set Google as the search engine, rather than not having the Search field present in the Toolbar.
First, make sure Show Toolbar is set in Safari's View menu - if it is set to show, it will state "Hide Toolbar" instead and you need not change that.
Then, also in the View menu, choose the item "Customize Toolbar...".
Click on the representation of that item (circled below) and drag it to the right end of the Toolbar, between the Address box and the edge of the window. A position marker should appear, at which time you can release it.

  • "Customize Toolbar" Not Appearing

Selecting "Customize Toolbar" does not work correctly in my Intel iMac (10.6.7), with Snow Leopard.
The drop down menu of available customizing options does not appear.
    How can this be corrected?

When attempting to move the Forecast Fox toolbar display, you have to be viewing this page - http://www.getforecastfox.com/customize/16/
That page automatically opens when you hit the Options button for that extension in Extensions on the Add-ons Manager tab in Firefox 4+ versions. This is the only extension that I have ever seen which did preference settings in this manner.

  • First character typed in a safari 7.1 form not being recognised

Since I have updated safari to 7.1 on OS X 10.9.5 the first character in a form (such as a password) is not being recognised.  Up to now this has been working fine.  Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone know a fix?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IOS 5/iPad 2 proxy settings not being remembered

I recently upgraded one of my iPad 2's to iOS 5, but I seem to be having an issue the Wi-Fi connection in work. The wireless network has a hidden SSID and it requires some Manual proxy settings being put into the wireless config.
When I input the relevant information it seems to hold fine for a few seconds but when I go into Safari it prompts for an https:// proxy username and password, if I input the correct details it just prompts again and no matter how many times I input the correct information it still prompts for it over and over again, to the point that you just have to switch the wireless off to stop the message from flashing up.
I have an iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.5 and the same setting work perfectly fine on this iPad 2 but will not work on iOS 5.
I have even tried a Linksys Wireless Access Point plugged into the network with no hidden SSID etc and I still get the same thing on the iOS 5 iPad 2 it continually prompts for the proxy details, but the iOS 4.3.5 iPad2 works fine.
Is this a known glitch or am I just being a total idiot  : (  ?

There are no work-arounds, there are no fixes, and no... updating to iOS 5.0.1 will not help you. This is broken and Apple needs to fix it. No "consumerisation" will not win, and our Network admin will NOT remove proxy authentication from the network to make it work. That's what Apple want me to do, and it's not happening. Here's the deal:
    1. There is a difference between a HTTP proxy and a HTTPS proxy, of course, and Apple ONLY let you supply a configuration (using "Manual") for a HTTP connection. Not HTTPS. That's the problem.
    2. As such, any request to a secure site (which a LOT of apps use, including Apple's own in-built ones) will fail. As soon as the connection for HTTPS is required, you will get an authentication prompt. The iPhone/iPad CAN NOT use the credentials assigned to the HTTP Proxy for the HTTPS Proxy... they are different. On a Mac (running OSX), these are definately two separate items you need to configure in the network settings and store in the KeyChain. Aple either need to write the "Manual" Proxy setting as both a HTTP and HTTPS connection (using the same KeyChain entry), or allow a HTTPS Proxy to also be specified. I favour the first option for simplicity - though it is not "standard".
    3. In iOS4, Apple also supplied a "Manual" setting with a "HTTP Proxy" setting. The big difference in that case is that requests to HTTPS sites, which would require a HTTPS Proxy connection (which was not supported), were simply IGNORED or attempted to get the data using ANONYMOUS access... which in almost all enterprises with proxy servers is flat-out denied. In iOS4 your app would have a spinning wheel forever or would crash when trying to hit a HTTPS site for updates etc. In iOS4 more apps simply didn't work, but failed in a nice and quiet way. This has changed to "allowed" in iOS5, as it now is HTTPS aware and attempts to respond to Proxy auth challenges... but Apple have not provided a way to store a username and password for that connection, so you get an authentication box.
After I installed iOS5, I had my iPad on my desk all day but didn't get a chance to use it. That night I had about forty (40) of those prompts to cancel before I could use the device. Very frustrating. Even if you enter the correct username and password the million times it asks for it, you STILL get prompts... all the time. There is no good answer. If you're lucky enough to fluke a configuration and set of apps that only require HTTP connections, then you'll have no issues. That, from my experience, would be exceedingly rare.
    There are three (3) possible answers here;
    a) Get the network administrator to turn off authenticated proxy for the entire site. Good luck with that one.
    b) Implement a solution using DHCP/TMG/Websense (or whatever your network and security products may be), or use a product like NetBox Blue. If you don't have a solution like NetBox, you'll need to set DHCP reservations for each device by MAC Address, then configure that IP Range to be "unauthenticated" in terms of the proxy server/firewall, and then specify the range an a set of categories for that new typ of conenction (if using web filtering). That will let you do MAC address authentication and bypass the authenticated proxy. This is what we've had to do - and it *****.
    c) Wait for Apple to fix the issue. Like I said earlier, they'll either need to repurpose the "HTTP Proxy" option as "HTTP(S) Proxy" and allow HTTPS challenge responses to proxies via the one KeyChain item... or supply a second "HTTPS Proxy" option we can specify under "Manual". It's a fault in their software. To be honest... I preferred it when HTTPS traffic was just blocked (as in iOS4).

  • When using Panorama, everytime I create a New Group, I am redirected to the Google Calendar App that I created. Tab groups are not being remembered. Any workaround?

I am trying to use Panorama for the first time. I can successfully create a tab group, but Firefox does not remember it. When I view a new web page and try to use "add to group" I am redirected to the app tab I created for Google Calendar. I am using Windows 7 64x with Firefox as my default browser.
Are there any know issues with the apps tap and Panorama?

I have a somewhat related problem running FF7 on WinXP32, specifically concerning your ''I can successfully create a tab group, but Firefox does not remember it.''
When I reopen FF, I find FF
    * ''sometimes'' does not remember all tab groups.
    * ''often'' seems to move at least 1 tab from one group to another.
    ''kursiver Text''
I am new to using this tab grouping feature, and I have not identified a specific and consistent misbehavior yet.

  • Cookies will are not being remembered

every time i open my firefox sites that i have been logged in, in the pass aren't logged in anymore and the browser wont remember them. i have gone through the privacy settings but it still wont let me stay logged in on certain sites when i close the browser. how can i fix this?!

    * Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.
    * Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
    * In [[Private Browsing]] mode all cookies are session cookies that expire if that session is ended, so websites won't remember you.
    * Do not use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

  • My workspace is not being remembered by CS3.

My own default Illustrator template saved as a workspace, when opening does not show my personalized swatch and graphic styles panels. I have to open the swatches and graphic styles panels from the window menu to load them.
This has just started happening. I also select persistant.
If I set it up as I want with my chosen panels then save it again as a workspace when I open my default template my graphic styles/swatches panels still do not show.
    Any suggestions please?

  • DW CS4 - OS X 10.5.7 - Login and Passwords not being remembered

Initially i had all my site definitions deleted  from DW CS4 and Contribute CS4 for no apparent reason (no crash or anything of note). Since then I cannot get my site login and password to remain after the application restarts.
I did my inital research and found posts with similar problems but nothing seems to have worked for me.
I have cleared all my old keychains from previous version (to no avail)
I have also resorted to removing CS4 completely and running the CS4 Cleanup Utility  before re-installing as well, but the problem still exists.
This is becoming a real problem as I have a lot of site definitions.
    Any ideas, suggestions.

If you enter the wrong settings and request a certificate when none is required you'll have this problem.
Apple Mail should enter all the setting correctly for Gmail and possibly Comcast. Make sure the User Name is the full email address in both receiving and sending settings. [email protected] and [email protected]

  • My refresh button will not appear in 4.0, all I can get is a stop and home button, the refresh shows up in customize toolbar and I can put it up there, but as soon as I close it it dissapears, how do I get my beloved refresh button to show up?

At first I had the stop/refresh buttons merged, which I hated so I tried putting spaces and things between them to stop their unholy union, but instead it has now made my refresh button dissapear in anger for not being allowed to see that dirty stop button! I cannot make it come back! Even if I put it on the toolbar in customize and it shows up, the moment I close it it has gone again.

Firefox 4 uses a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.<br />
During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.<br />
If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.<br />
You can middle-click that Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
To move the Stop and Reload buttons to their position to the left of the location bar you can use these steps:
    * Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
    * Drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.
    * Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
    * Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

  • Safari 4.0.3  Customize Toolbar problem

After update verything functions OK till I click View/Customise Toolbars. After this action Adresses and Google searches cannot be typed any more unless I restart Safari
Tried to trass com.apple.Safari.plist and restart but nothing changes
No idea how to solve this
    Jorge

I could not open my "customize toolbar" feature by right clicking in the toolbar nor by choosing selection from the view menu.
    I went to Computer/Library/Imput Managers
There I had a list of all the menu plug ins for Safari. I suspected TabExpose was the problem and deleted that first, restarted Safari and it fixed the problem. The security update did not fix it, and deleting the safari plist did not help. This problem occurred with Onyx about 4 months ago also. Deleting the input manager resolved the issue.
    Hope that helps someone.

  • Customize Toolbar feature not loading, crashing Mail

This morning I accidentally deleted the "Delete" icon in the Mail toolbar. Now, when I go to "Customize Toolbar" the toolbar switches into the edit mode (with the icons being able to be moved around) but NO toolbar options drop down. Consequently, I can not drag/drop any new toolbar items into the bar, nor can I click "Done" at the end to finish. Mail then crashes.
This is the first type of problem I've had with Mail. Any ideas???

Thanks for the suggestion... I was already running 3.5 but I ran the installer again anyway. Didn't help.
Any idea how I can delete Mail Plug Ins? I know I use MailTags and Mail Attachments Iconizer (which I love and would not want to get rid of) but I may also have one or two others that I don't need that causing my problem.
    Thank you!

  • Customize Toolbar does not respond HELP!!

I recently updated to Safari 4.0.5. At first it worked fine, but during surfing suddenly I saw something disappearing from my toolbar with a "poof"-cloud.
I tried opening Customize Toolbar under the View menu, but it would'nt open.
I relaunched Safari and everything in my Toolbar had disappeared, except the back/forward button and my 1Password toolbar-button, which are non-responsive.
This is what I tried already:
    I reinstalled (the right) Safari update;
    removed the apple.com.safari.plist
    Anyone else with this problem?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    1Password toolbar-button, which are non-responsive.
Probably the glitch. iPassword may not be compatible with Safari 4.0.5.
Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move iPassword to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
Instead of using third party software such as iPassword let your Mac do the work for you.
Go to your Safari Menu Bar, select Safari/Preferences the select the Autofill tab. Make sure Usernames and Passwords is ticked. Anytime you login into website Safari will ask you to "Allow or Always Allow"... meaing your data will be saved to your Keychain Access application here:
    Applications/Utilities.
