Safari is using 5 to 6 GB of memory (of 8) and everything slows to a crawl, requiring force quit of what little I have open.

Safari is using 5 to 6 GB of memory (of 8) and everything comes to screeching halt, requiring force quit of what little I have open.  Frustrated, I switched to Chrome.  This worked for awhile but now I see Safari is still 'there' in the  Activity Monitor, doing I know not what, as I never opened the app.
Sometimes the memory sink happens immediately, sometimes it builds up over time.  But it always happens regardless of what else is opened. I find I have to keep checking the activity monitor to make sure Safari has not snuck in there, even though I am not using the Safari browser. I tried to throw Safari in the trash but the system would not let me.
This is a brand new imac, only 2 weeks old and I feel like throwing IT in the trash too.  (Kidding).  But seriously, my old 2010 imac never had this issue.  Safari on my iphone and ipad appears normal.
My safari is 6.0.5 and my OS is 10.8.4.  I think these are both the latest and greatest.
I disabled all extensions in Safari.  Did not help.  I saw a post suggesting to cut off Java which I just did, but I am not optimistic this will work either given how persistent and pervasive this problem appears to be.
Any help would be welcome.
Deb

Although you are not launching Safari yourself, make sure it's not launching itself on restart. Any applications that are open when you shutdown/restart will relaunch unless you deselect the tick shown in this image:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items and review what's set to load at boot-up. Remove anything that is not required using the 'minus' button. You can always add things back if necessary.
Another thought - what third-party software have you installed, if any? Any anti-virus programs or apps that promise to 'clean' or 'speed up' your Mac. There are some apps that are known to bring a Mac to its knees - MacKeeper is top of the list.
If none of this helps, then I agree you should take advantage of your warranty/phone support.

I have done absalutely nothing to my 4g apple ipod touch, and it over heats, won't hold a charge, and the front camera will not work. I bought this brand new in december, and i've barely used it. I've tried restarting it and everything, I honestly think this is out raging because i spend over $200 on this. To have for music and instagram. I use it about an hour a day, but i've only been using it for about 3 months although i've had it since December. Any suggestions that may help me?

    Try:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

When inserting pictures in a new mail message using the " photo browser" button I can view and select photos but the " choose "  button is gone. What have I done wrong?

    Hi Liz,
Sorry to hear you are having a similar problem.  Last night I went to the tool bar at the top of iphoto, clicked on "File",  then clicked "Browse Backups" in the drop down menu.    I have an external hard drive that is set up to Time Machine.   The Browse Backups  opened the iphoto pages in the Time Machine.  I selected a date one day ahead of the day I performed the now infamous update, and it showed my iphoto library as it had existed that day.   I then clicked  "Restore Library" at the bottom right corner of the Time Machine screen.   Roughly 2 hours later my iphoto was back to normal.   When I opened iphoto there was a message saying I need to upgrade my program to be compatible with the new version of iphoto(version 9.2.1).  I clicked "Upgrade" and within seconds it had done whatever upgrading it needed to do.
The only glitch in the restoration was that it restored the library as it appeared last week, so I no longer had photos I had imported this past weekend.   I simply went back to the Browse Backups in the drop down menu,  when Time Machine opened I selected the page showing my pictures from this weekend and again said to Restore Library.   Roughly 45 minutes later the library was restored including the most recent photos.
I am now a happy camper.
I don't know if any of this will be of help to you because your email says you are having trouble with photos imported after the upgrade was performed.   Have you had any pop up notices when you first open iphoto,  that tell you you need an upgrade to be compatible with the new iphoto?     If so have you clicked "upgrade"?
Good luck Liz,  if you have Time Machine running as a back up to your library, maybe you wil be able to get help there, by following my instructions above.   Otherwise,   good luck with your investigations.   I'd be interested in hearing how you make out.

Contact your carrier to make sure there's nothing wrong with your account.
Also, it may be worth going into Settings>General>Reset and choosing Reset Network Settings. You'll lose saved wifi passwords but you won't see any other changes. That may resolve the issue.

  • HT204053 I have iphone 4 and it is using my wife  . My new iphone 5 and old iphone 4 both were used same apple password, but different e-mail address . Now both apple id has beed blocked. What do I have to do.

My both of iphone id blocked. What do I have to do?

Sorry, but nobody here can help you nor can Apple.  The only way to disable Activation Lock on your devices is to use the password for the AppleID associated with that devices iCloud account.  There is no alternative - you need that password, or you need your friend to disable those devices in their online account.

  • Huge amount of virtual memory and system slows to a crawl

I have a mac mini with 5 GB of memory running os x mavericks and server 3, prior to the mavericks upgrade, it ran fine. Now it is showing an excessive amount of virtual memory in use, 40-70 gb, and the system slows to a near stop: e.g. switching apps takes over 30 seconds, starting one takes well over a minute, pressing command tab doesn't respond with list of apps and the display doesn't always wake up.  A hard reboot (hold down power button to turn off, then back on) seems to be the only thing that works to get out of this. I tried scheduling a shutdown and reboot with energy saver but that just resulted in a completely non-responsive system.  When the display does wake up, there's nothing in the activity monitor memory display that indicates a high memory usage.
I'm considering wiping out the hard drive and reinstalling unless somebody has some other ideas.
Does anybody have similar problems with mavericks and server 3?

I managed to look at it before the system hung up and it looks like devicemgrd is the top user of memory.  Of course, I don't know if this is indicative of a problem as I have only 1 server.   I saw it up to 1.4 GB just a little bit ago and now it is down below 800MB and dropping.

  • Safari won't open - spinning ball only requiring Force Quit

    Hi,
One of our Macs is an original G5 (not intel) and suddenly today, Safari is not opening! I can't stop it to change preferences or anything. So I reinstalled it and was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what else I can do. Even after the reinstall, it won't open.
    Thanks for your help!

If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    • history.plist
    • lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

  • I recently bought a used iMac with OS X 10.6.7 and I can not get to the adminstrators account. I do not have the OS disc. Any help is greatly appreciated.

How can I reset the Administrators password to create a new one?

    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • Safari 6.0.1 won't load web pages randomly, and says website unavailable/no connection. But, all my other devices do have a great connection. Is there a fix for this problem?

I recently bought OS X mountain Lion, and safari 6.0.1 was running great for a short period of time when it stopped loading the web pages. It will randomly do this now and then. I try resetting safari to no avial, and when I do a system reset it provides a temporary fix. It's very annoying problem. I know it is not a connection problem because all my other devices get internet connection. Safari will say no connection/web site is unavailable. The OS I have is OS X ML 10.8.2. Any suggestions?

  • MacBook Pro 13-inch (2009) memory gets full and machine slows down?

Today I got the message that I cannot run Time Machine backup because memeory is full. The machine is almost non-esponsive, and I cannot open new programs. Have shut down many programs, but still no action. Restart is the only solution.
This happens a lot, so is there a memory handsling problem with these machines? Have other older and newer MecBook Pros, and they do not have this memory full/system slow issue?
The machine has 5Gb RAM, and all the latest software and firmware updates.
PLease help, because this is making the machine unusable in a production environment.

Thanks foir the answer, but already familiar with all those possible obstacles. I work quite technically with computers and development.
My harddisk is 1/3 full, and the backup disk is triple the size of my disk. Anyway, that does not expl<in that the RAM gets eaten up, and not cleared. M;y MacBook acts like an application without garbage collection, with just fills the RAM, and then collapses. I didn't think that kind of trouble would exist on a new Mac in 2010?!?
Could this be caused by software? It doesn't seem likely to me, bacause then I would be able to observe a process eating the capasity. To me it looks like the operating system...
    Any advice?

  • Safari on New Mac Mini keeps requiring forced quit

    Hi
I have a new MAcMini. Safari opens and loads first page (Apple) but then will not load another page. Part downloads on top bar. Message on dock 'application not responding'.
I have repaired disk permissions several times and also verified disk from Disk Utility. I also downloaded Safari again
    Any suggestions on next steps?
    Regards

    Hi
by extensions I mean those you enable via the Safari-Preferences-Extensions tab
    since those operate per-account.
Any running 3rd party software might cause problems - the usual locations are covered in
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3230
If you've no extensions, and a new account was noticeably better, start by trashing safari's cache from Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari when Safari is quit.
