Samsung SC-D372 comaptible w FCP?

hi folks, i bought a Samsung camcorder to use as a cheap VCR to capture my tapes and not use my expensive cam for that. Problem is that FC Pro does not seem to like the mini DV's that i play from that camera. i ran some tests and it will capture into iMovie. however one of the 3 tests doing that the ftg was sped up which was odd. i tried capturing from 3 different tapes of my original ftg out of the samsung and into FCP. I could not get it to work at all. Message said: it was a problem with the tape. however if i put the same tape in my XL2 it capture ok. i tried different AV setting/Device Ctrl/to Firewire basic cause it also seemed the camera was only half being controlled by the computer and sometimes i had to push stop on the cam itself.
do i need to return this camera and get a Canon or another more campatible camera?

Canon equipment is very naughty in the digital video sandbox; rarely does it play nicely with other devices. I'm sure others will harrumph loudly that I'm all wet for the quantitative and qualitative evidence of this is all over the message boards.
I suspect the track pitch of the XL2 is doing something funky to the tape that your Samsung camera does not like.
Solution:
Continue to use the XL2 to capture.
Buy and experiment with numerous cheap camcorders until you find one that works but there are no guarantees that it'll work for any length of time.
Ditch your Canon gear and buy into equipment that cooperates in the digital video sandbox.
Personally, I would choose option 3 for myself.
Good luck.

I can't import my HD videos (MP4) from my Samsung OIS Duo into FCP.

In FCP, I just see a red box with a yellow triangle at the center(warning). Can someone help me. The video are Full HD 1080/60i.
I also try converting from MP4 to DV. Cannot import the .DV either.
    Can someone help me?

Could it be the case that you have "proxy media" selected in the preferences (under Final Cut Pro -> Preferences, click on "Playback" and see which is selected, proxy or optimized), BUT you are not creating proxy media when importing?
If that is the case, either
      - switch to "original/optimized media",
    or
      - create the proxy media (control-click the clip(s) in the event browser, choose "Transcode media" e check the box for "create proxy media").

  • FCP 7 and Samsung MX20 - settings?

I have a Samsung MX20 camcorder. This is the SD, not HD, version. I don't see anything in the FCP docs that suggests how to deal with the files created by this camcorder. The footage is anamorphic, interlaced, and SD. I can see how to correct the issues once I have the files in my Sequence but I'm sure there's a proper way of setting up a sequence and automatically dealing with these files when I bring them in to FCP (just dropping them into the sequence).
Is this a case of setting up some sort of automation (like a de-interlace filter and setting the anamorphic flag)?
By the way, if I drop the files onto QT Player, it opens them as 4:3 and doesn't see the 16:9 flag (or Samsung implements this poorly).
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks for your quick response.
The info by "Format" is as follows:
    amsung AVC Encoder''!avcCB'
    gB¶A¥=éhœ8Antrt
Yes, the first "S" of Samsung isn't there and the bizarre characters on both lines are as close as I can get to reproducing them here.
This is H264 in an MP4 container recorded at about 6200kbps in 720x480 pixels. It's also interlaced and the wide-screen flag isn't respected in any app I've tried. I've been running all the files through MPEG Streamclip to 640x360 H264/MP4 with the deinterlace checkbox enabled at about 3500kbps. The resulting files then work fine in any QT-based app but, of course, I'd like to shortcut this process somehow. If I can't, then I wonder if I should simply batch process them through MPEG Streamclip before I drop them into FCP. I do have to render everything, however, hence my request for the proper settings for FCP.

  • HD edited footage in FCP 5.1 to DVDSP 4 to "build and format" to where now?

97 minute movie shot with Sony's HDV-FX1, edited in FCP 5.1, exported to QuickTime movie, full quality, current settings. Imported into DVDSP 4.1, parsed, no problem, authored with HD settings, and built project. DSP produced a proper HDDVD_TS folder. With Apple DVD Player 4.6.5 on my duel 1.8 G5, this plays just fine.
With Toast 8 and a NU Technology Blu-ray burner (Matshita BD-MLT SW 5528), DVD-ROM (UDF), new disc, named and imported the HD file. Clicked record, selected 1x DB write speed to be on the safe side, used both a Panasonic BD-RW and a TDK BD-RW single layer disc and burned successfully. Neither disc now, to my ultimate frustration, will play in our Samsung Blu-ray DVD player or play with Apple's DVD Player. Both report a message about not supporting the media type, although the disc does mount on my G5 via the Blu-ray drive.
Thoughts on where to go from here? Our movie plays fine downconverted to 480i, but we would love to see it play in High def at 1080i.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    David,
That is the answer to why I am unable to use the "build and format" option in DSP? Seems crazy that the option is there, but the function isn't.
Did the Toast product manager give any hint as to when this option may be available? I knew were we sailing into unchartered waters, but we had hoped that by the time we were done with post that the path had already been navigated
    Thanks,

  • Stuttering or jittery playback on DVD, not in FCP

Hi, I wasn't sure exactly where to post this since I don't know if it's a DVD Studio Pro problem, a Compressor problem, or a FCP problem.
In a nutshell, the problem is this: our short film looks like it plays fine in our (color-calibrated) progressive-scan monitor. When we view it on a large LCD HDTV (a friend's newly-purchased Samsung), anything in motion looks stuttery (people, their shadows, any pans with the camera). Some things stutter worse than others, looks like it might have to do with areas of high contrast (people's shadows gliding across lit areas). We don't see these problems on our own CRT TV (a 15-year-old 20" SD tv).
The question is, does this have something to do with the samsung tv - its sharpness looks like it's set way too high - or maybe with how we encoded the DVD or even compressed the FCP sequence in the first place?
We've tried applying motion blur to some of the pans, we've tried antiflicker filters to some moving shots, but these don't seem to fix the stuttering problem (and since you can only see it once it's on DVD playing on the big lcd hdtv, it's hard to do lots of parameter fiddling).
Any ideas about what could be going on? I'm hoping this is a simple matter of some compressor or dvd studio setting, or maybe we need a special fcp filter for the moving shots.
There are 3-way color corrector filters on just about every clip, if that makes a difference.
It's never been interlaced at any stage of the game, so I don't think that will be a problem.
Shot with: Canon XH-A1 in 24p mode, 1/24 shutter speed, 16:9.
    Software/hardware info:
Captured directly into FCP from the HDV tapes, sequence settings are the standard 23.98 1440x1080 ("anamorphic").
Monitor: Dell 2404WFP (ultrasharp lcd monitor), connected to a Matrox MXO to do the color calibration
Compressor settings: DVD 16:9 90 minutes "best", then I upped the data rate just a bit (I think it was 7.2 and now it's 7.4). Tried default GOP settings, then tried IBBP (or maybe that was the default) and IBP as well. Otherwise, no changes to defaults.
Final Cut Studio (version 1), latest updates (so FCP 5.1.4, etc.).
DVD Studio Pro settings - all defaults. Took compressor's .m2v and .ac files, added them to a track, burned a DVD (Verbatim DataLife) at 2x speed.
If it matters, we edit on either a MacBookPro (early 2008) or an iMac (2007) core2duo about 2.2GHz each, max memory (4GB and 3GB respectively).
    Thanks in advance!
    kyle

Just an edit to my post - I tried hooking up the matrox mxo to a CRT TV and it looked fine (well, no stuttering). The sequence apparently doesn't have stuttering in it to begin with. So it must have been the LCD HDTV we tested on.
Just got a chance tonight to test on another plasma hdtv (different model - panasonic) and there was a bit of stuttering there. So maybe the tv's sharpness is an issue? Both TVs that showed stuttering (a plasma and lcd hdtv) were set with very high sharpness values, and a CRT TV (pretty standard 20" model) and the samsung plasma HDTV (low sharpness setting) didn't show stuttering. So maybe we're at the mercy of sharpness settings, though I'm lost as to why that would cause this kind of effect.
Is that a probable cause of stuttery playback of motion shots - the sharpness setting of the TV?

  • Any ideas on a good 42" lcd to use with fcp?

Do anyone here use a large lcd for editing? What would be the best brand to get and some info on the specs such as contrast ratio etc....
    I do not want plasma.
    Thanks
    Tony

True that no two monitors ever match ... that's why engineers claim that NTSC really stands for Never Twice the Same Color. But the point of NOT using a consumer set for critical monitoring is that almost all consumer sets are designed to "correct" the incoming image somewhat (depending on model). So what you're seeing isn't necessarily what you really have in FCP.
On the other hand, a properly calibrated and aligned pro monitor doesn't add or take away from the image so what you see on the screen is going to be pretty darn accurate.
The same applies with audio monitors. Don't use consumer speakers that "color" the sound. Use reference monitors that are design to output the real sound as it was intended.
Once all the color grading and audio tweaking is done, then feel free to view on any consumer set that you want. Or view both at the same time while editing. That's why I use the Samsung 36" LCD.
if you are a male you have some color blindness. All males do, that's why the colorists at the BBC are all female.
Now that I know that, I finally understand why women know so many different color shades while most guys only know the typical Crayola 12.

  • Importing FCP Hi Rez from Final Cut with Encore Destination

I wonder if i could get some advise and comment on trying to get the best Blu Ray encode from Final Cut.
What I have done is this:
I have imported a 60 minute Quicktime FCP file into Premier CS4. (The file was imported as HDV video from a Canon XHA1 and converted in FCP to 422Hi Rez). I set Premier to HDV and not Quicktime before the import. When the import finished, I notice that playback was very jerky, so I rendered the whole time line. This took about 5 hours. Following this, play back was perfect.
So, what should my settings have been initially....might I have not set everything correctly. What settings should I have set initially?
(I have not figured out how to export a sequence directly from FCP which 4.01 is supposed to do.)
Now that it is play fine in Premier CS4  4.01, I am planning to use the dynamic link system to export into Encore CS4 .01 .  But before I do so, do I have to fill out copyright info in Premier...I noticed an area for this?
I chose this work flow because I did not want to use the FCP's Compressor for make a Blu Ray. I want to use Encore's H264 compression which produces a smaller file and thus less disc space. I do understand that I could have left out Premier altogether and gone directly from Compressor to Encore, but then I would not have had the H264 choice..;is this right...I am not entirely au fait with all the terms:)
So far, no crashes or weird behaviour. I am on a MacPro  Quad Core  2 Porcessor  2.8 GHZ processor.
    Tim

Thanks for the advice. I now have the project in Encore. While it played perfectly in Premiere, it cannot do so in Encore. Maybe this is because I have the settings set to the highest resolution- 1920 x 1080 and Blu Ray NTSC. I am trying to set up chapters and it is very jerky trying to get to the right place. Shou/ld I be doing this at a lower resolution and then changing things at the end?
Also I currently have DVD Transcode set to automatic and Blu-ray Transcode set to Automatic.
Are these settings going to look at the best on a 54" Samsung HDTV  1080i  ?  I notice a whole slew of choices in the drop down!!
I am ploughing through the Lynda.com tutorials, but some of these questions don't seem to be answered there.
I am planning on saving things to hard drive so I can test before burning...is this feasible on a mac?

  • Converting Samsung vp-hmx20c files for final cut pro

    Hey
Ive got a samsung vp-hmx20c hd video camera and have recorded files in 1080/25p and 1080/50i.
Im trying to convert them for editing in FCP but everytime i convert to something different playback is flickery and lags in both FCP and quicktime.
Im using a Macbook pro intel core duo 2.2ghz with 2gb ram.
Just wanting to know what the best way to convert the files and what i should be converting them to?
    Files info from Quicktime is
    Format: H.264, 1920 x 1080, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    FPS: 50
    Data Rate: 14.54 Mbit/s
    Current Size: 1440 x 810 pixels
    Cheers

    Use ProRes 422.
Is there any benefit of compressor or streamclip?
MPEG Streamclip is possibly a little less complicated to set up than Compressor.
I have a tutorial for it [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]. Just substitute ProRes instead of the DV codec in the article.

  • View Footage from FCP to Sony HDR-HC7 Camera

    Hi all,
I have final cut pro and a Sony HDR-HC7 camera with a SAMSUNG external monitor. I'm trying to view edited video from FCP to my camera then through HDMI to my SAMSUNG external monitor. I can't get this to work.
This works fine through my DVDPRO deck then component to SAMSUNG external monitor.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the answer.
Now I tried to link my iMac directly to my television (mini DVI to HDMI) to watch my movie, but I got no picture on my television. It is a Panasonic Viera, HD ready (TH-42PV60E). It has 2 HDMI inputs. Has anybody succeeded yet in doing this?

  • Which monitor for mac pro and FCP

    Hi,
I'm using a quad core mac pro with a Dell 2407wfp. In this setup I mainly do FCP editing. The monitor is 4 years old and I like to replace it for a larger one. I recently saw a setup with a Samsung P2770HD full hd and a tv tuner on board. Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
    TIA

Will this be good enough for FCP editing and reviewing HD content?
Probably not - but I have no experience with that monitor.
Not what you asked but why not keep the Dell for displaying FCP timeline, bins, etc and purchase a quality HDTV and the means to feed it a hd signal (eg AJA Kona series, various Blackmagic cards, Matrox MXO series, etc) for viewing output?

  • FCP to PP Blackmagic frame rate settings question

Hello everyone. FCP to PP editor here, and as I attempt to monitor my AVC-Intra 100 1080HD 23.976 footage on an external monitor via my Blackmagic Studio card, I seem to be missing a setting that was available in FCP 7.
I'm hoping someone can help me either find the switch or confirm that it does not exist in PP.
The video output menu in FCP7 (when used with Blackmagic cards anyway) has a handy 23.976 ->59.94 8 bit HD conversion output that allows me to monitor in a frame rate my consumer Samsung display can accept.
In Premiere CS 5.5, I understand that I need to choose the Blackmagic sequence preset that matches my footage (I've chosen the Uncompressed preset at 1080HD/23.976 so I can also choose ProRes422 for my preview file codec). My external monitor can't display 23.976, so I'm hoping there's a way to tell my Blackmagic card to still do that conversion I'm so fond of in FCP7 (to 59.94)... Whether it's through a Blackmagic setting or a PP setting, I'd like to know if it's possible. I know the hardware can do it... just wondering if there's a way PP can acheive it.
By the way, I did have the thought to use a 29.97 sequence/timeline, and it works great for monitoring, but playback continually stops, even when files have been rendered.
Thanks so much for any input!
    Banks

    Richard,
Thanks very much for the response. It's not there on my Mac. I do have 9.5 installed (did it last week).
I'll give BMD a call. I have a Decklink Studio 2, which may not have the option at the card level. Strange, though, since I know the hardware can do it. Perhaps BMD has a way to flip the switch.
    Thanks,
    Banks

  • FCP 6 playback problems in Digital Cinema Display on an LCD External Monito

    Hi
    Looking for advice.
I am running FCP 6 and have hooked up my Macbook Pro to an external LCD SAMSUNG Flatscreen TV. I want to preview my edit as I cut but Im having problems with playback.
When I hit play the video freezes on the one still image on the LCD, The canvas windows is playing fine but the LCD playback doesnt move... is this a setting/resolution problem?
Im editing in DVCOPRO HD which i thought may be the issue but even when I switched to editing Jpgs or even DV PAL sequences it still does the same thing!
On some occasions BOTH the canvas window and the LCD dont move at all, only when I turn off the External LCD Cinama Desktop Display monitoring does the canvas window play normally.
Can anyone help with my problem?
Im editing on a Macbook pro 17" 2.4 ghz 160GB with a NIVIDIA 8600 Geforce graphics card 256MB 2.0GB RAM running Final Cut Pro v.6
    cheers

I was having a similar problem trying but was set up with a 17" viewsonic as my primary monitor (menubar location) and my MacBook Pro as the secondary. I wanted to play back Hi-Def full screen on the MacBook Pro and all I got was still frames (though I could advance a single frame at a time and see motion).
I didn't find an answer here but went exploring in prefs and found a solution that worked for me.
In System Settings > Playback Control I changed "RT:" from "Safe" to "Unlimited"
Now I'm happily watching the full resolution HD video on my laptop screen.
I'd be curious to know if that works with the Flatscreen TV.
    All the best,
    Kevin

  • Using FCP 7 - Can I connect two more displays to the new 27" iMac and have one as a display monitor?

I use Final Cut Pro 7 right now and am thinking about buying the new 27" iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 card. I have a 24" Apple Cinema Display with mini Display port cable. I also have one more Samsung display with DVI & HDMI. Can I connect both monitors to the iMac and be able to use one in FCP as a display monitor?

    Hello,
Maybe a device like the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Adapter or StarTech USB 3.0 to HDMI an DVI Dual Monitor External Video Card Adapter would work?

  • Anyone using a 4K monitor with FCP X?

Is anyone using FCP X on a 4K monitor? I'm thinking about getting a Dell 4K monitor as my main monitor but I'm a little worried the user interface support on 4K is weak. I think everything is going to look super tiny.
    Has anyone already experienced this?
    Thanks!

So I have my new Mac Pro set up. 8-Core, 32 gigs RAM, Dual 700 GPUs, 512 gig internal Flash drive.
I purchased the 27" Thunderbolt display as my main Final Cut Pro X screen and I have the Dell UP2414q 4K monitor plugged in as the Viewer display.
I have the Dell set to "Best for Display" and it works fine. I have some 4480 x 1920 RED footage and I have the FCP X Viewers on the Dell. The footage is set to 100% and it bleeds a little off the sides, as it should since the monitor is 3820 wide. It's at its native resolution.
The user interface elements of the second monitor are at normal size - the menu bar, the FCP X view options. Buying a 4K monitor and using Best for Display gives you the desktop the size of a typical 1080 monitor, but it all looks like a Retina display. It's very crisp.
So if you want a second monitor to hold a ton of Adobe palettes, and have a very large desktop, I'd recommend getting a Thunderbolt display, beause this display behaves like a 1080 monitor in that regard. If you want a 4K monitor specifically for color grading 4K footage at the native size so you can see all the artifacts and things you wouldn't see with the footage at 50%, this Dell monitor is fine and it's $890 on Amazon. It's not a professional color grader's monitor, obviously, but it does well for me.
I took some 4480 x 1920 RED footage that had a sky that was gray (the famous Mercedes in the mountains footage). I used the color picker color correction in FCP X and was able to select that sky very easily. I can see why the fat 4K footage is so great in regards to color grading. Because you don't have the massive color gradiation and artifacts you get in the more compressed media, when you use the color picker, it selects a very large, clean, section of the sky. I was able to quickly make the sky more saturated and blue and play it in real time (Better Performance) it's it's perfectly clean with no halos around the tree branches as they move into the foreground of the sky. Very nice!
Nice feature in FCP X is all the effects, transitions, etc., have a "4K-ready content only" button at the top so it only presents you with effects and transitions that work with 4K footage.
It took a lot of time calibrating this Dell monitor. It has the Adobe RGC color space built in but when I set it to that and set the OS X Display color option to Adobe RGB, it all had a very slight purple/pink huge. Very slight. Whites were not pure white like they are on the Thunderbolt and my blue sky had a tinge of pink to it.
I calibrated it with advanced options in the OS X Display preferences. I then connected my Samsung HD LED TV into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro and set it as my A/V display in FCP X. I was able to do the custom color setting on the Dell monitor itself and lower the saturation and RGB values. It took about 15 minutes to get it looking right. Now, I don't see the very slight purple/pink tink. My blue sky looks blue, etc., and it looks exactly how it will look on DVD and Blu-ray and projectors at film festivals.
The Samsung LED TV was a breeze to use. As soon as I plugged it into the HDMI port of the Mac Pro, the displays changed and OS X went to 1920 x 1080 60hz. The color was set to an HD color preset (I forget the number and I disconnected it). Arranging the multiple monitors is as you'd expect, just works.
BTW, I have 2 10 TB 5Big Lacie Thunderbolt 2 hard drives. They are about $1K each at 10 TBs. I have one for my footage and one as a backup with Time Machine. No formatting necessary - just plug them in and go. I plugged in the first one, told OS X no for Time Machine. Plugged in the second one, told Time Machine yes. Renamed the second drive "Backup". I turned off hard drive sleep becuase it's annoying. You hear it spin up, spin down, spin up, etc. as you work.
I used the AJA benchmark and this is what I got with 16 gig test file, 4K video simulation:
    Write 740.3 MB/s
    Read: 849.1 MB/s
    Fast!
FCP X loads in 4 seconds on this system off the internal Flash drive.
    Cheers!
