Sandbox denies preview to write in specific files
After doing a clean install of Lion in my Macbook Pro (I think it's mid 2009), I am getting some strange messages in Console. They are related to sandbox and applications such as Preview or Safari. Some of the messages are:

Every time one of these events happens, the system freezes for a while and then continues normally. I have no idea what could possibly be the reason. I have repaired disk permissions and veryfy disk (wich appears to be OK) and nothing changed. Although I cannot be 100% sure, I would say that these messages did not appear before I did the clean install.
Thanks for any help,
Thanks for the suggestion. I just did it but, unfortunately, the problem is still there.
In addition, during the installation I got more messages regarding the sandbox, although I don't know if this is the normal behavior. Some of them:

Any more suggestions?

Using a Java CDF that reads and writes to a file
I'm trying to grant permission to a specific file in the file system by granting permission in the udf.policy file.
When I uncomment the line permission java.security.AllPermission; the CDF works fine and interacts with the file correctly. This is just to prove that the CDF works, I need to tighten this up to a single file. I stop and start the app after each edit.(I've also tried bouncing the Essbase server too)
When I use the following, I get an exception, shown below. Nothing of consequence is being written to the app or essbase logs

I've tried creating the policy using PolicyTool, same result. However, I have no idea what or if I should put in the "CodeBase" field.
Has anyone had success creating read & write permissions to a single file using the udf.policy file? What is the magic syntax?

Robb Salzmann

Never heard of the OTN 25pt Platinum Star award... It sounds appetizing, but I know I won't get it since I've got no Java experience. :)
I was just gonna ask if you've thought about posting the same question on one of the Java forums?

Time Machine, Migration Assistant, and copying specific files to a new machine
Things were running fine. Then repeating kernel panics! A fresh Mountain Lion install seemed to fix things. To test whether the panics were related to some application or preference, how can I restore only my data, specifically the Aperture library, iTunes library, and iMovie library and nothing else from my Time Machine backup? In other words, how can I see the file structure of the Time Machine backup so I can copy only specific files and folders?
Thanks for any advice!Hey hp12c,
Thanks for the question. The following article may provide the information you are looking for:
Mac Basics: Time Machine
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu and the restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Mountain Lion and Lion, portable Macs have the feature of local snapshots. See this article for details.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder. If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
Thanks,

Using Swing applet to write data to file on SERVER
Hello,
I'm in the process of writing an applet using Swing (SDK v1.4.2). Here's the deal. The JApplet calls a JPanel, which will be used by customers on my site to enter data. I'm adding a <Save> button to the "form" which is supposed to write data to a file on the server (in order to preserve the customer's preferences).
Please note that I am NOT attempting to write data to the customer's hard disk. That requires digital certificates, etc. which I am trying to avoid for now.
Instead, I am using the URL class to access the file:
URL page = new URL("http://www.whatever.com/mycustomers/preferences.txt")
I then use the URLConnection class to establish the connection:
URLConnection conn = this.page.openConnection();
conn.setDoInput(true);
conn.setDoOutput(true);
conn.connect();
etc...
I've created a text file (preferences.txt) on my web site. Using the classes InputStreamReader, BufferedStreamReader, and StringBuffer, I can successfully read the file into a JOptionPane in my applet.
The problem comes when I try to write data TO this file. I know the file exists because the applet can read it. I've set the permissions on the file to 666. I've got all of the appropriate syntax within a try statment that catches an IOException. I also have JOptionPanes all over the place to let me know where the program is. I've tried different combinations of output streams like BufferedWriter, BufferedOutputStream, StringWriter, but the file does not get updated. When the applet runs, it does not throw any exceptions, not even when I change the URL from "HTTP://www.whatever.com/prefs.txt" to "HTTP:/www.whatever.com/prefs.txt" (only one slash on HTTP, shouldn't I get a MalformedURLException?)
I apologize for all the background, but I thought you might need it. The bottom line is:
1) Can an applet write to a file on a remote server (not local hard disk)?
2) If so, what (if any) caveats are there?
3) Is there a way to check for file existence or be able to create a new file?
4) I'm using the HTTP protocol - is there some restriction that prevents an applet from writing to a file using that protocol? If so, is there a workaround?
5) Assuming that creating/writing a file using the method I've described is possible, what would be the appropriate output streams to use? (Currently, I'm using OutputStreamWriter with BufferedWriter).
I've been struggling with this for a while. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
P.S. I also posted this message on the Applet development forum, but I've received no response as of yet.Http servers support PUT as a mechanism to upload data to a specified URL. Get on the other hand which is what most people are familiar with is how you retrieve that data. The basic URLConnection is an abstraction of the Http connection which can be used for GET and POST operations by default based on doInput(true|false).. If you which to use any of the http methods other than GET|POST you will have to cast the URLConnection to HttpURLConnection so you can gain access to the specific Http functionaility that could not be abstracted.
Since you are using a hosting service the chances are that you won't be able to use HTTP PUT on their server. Most servers do not support HTTP PUT without configuring them todo so. Now Apache allows localized config through the .htacess file. It might be possible (keep in mind I am not an apache expert) to configure a particular directory to allow HTTP PUT using this .htacess file it may not be possible. You will have to consult the Apache web server documentation for that answer.
But regardless you can use the HttpURLConnection and the PUT method to send data from your applet to the server. In fact that is the preferred way to do this. If you can not configure your web server to support that method then you will have to develop a Servlet to do it. A servlet has several methods such as doGet(), doPost(), and doPut(). You would override the doPut() method get the URI path create a file and a FileOutputStream to that file, get from the request the inputstream, possibly skip the http headers, and then write byte for byte the incoming data to your OutputStream until you reach the end at which point you would close the OutputStream and send an Http Response of some sort. Typically in HTTP it would be 200 OK plus some web content. You content can be empty so long as your applet recognizes that is what it should expect...
And away you go... -
Write xmp sidecar files without need to export masters - script
I've written a script to write xmp sidecar files for referenced and online images (the 2 conditions in the script) of the selected images. I looked for a while at system events and other stuff to be able to write the xmp file, but i'm not a programmer, so in the end i chose the long and dirty way to do it.
This script will export all iptc expanded fields as aperture does (creating basically the same file). It can be easily adjusted to include other tags, even custom ones. I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so. Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.

Excellent stuff!
I don't know how to get at the adjustments for images, otherwise those could be included as well.
They are stored as binary data in the Version XML files at the bottom level of the Library package. You can also have a look around in the ZRKIMAGEADJUSTMENT table, but again the actual settings for each adjustment are in binary form.
If anyone has the energy to clean this up and make it faster, feel free to do so.
As far as I can remember, Aperture uses the 'proper' IPTC tag names when accessing them via AppleScript, so you may be able to do a loop through all the IPTC tags for each image, rather than picking out each specific one. But that would need checking. The EXIFTools site is a good place to find out about the different ways that IPTC data can be described.
Next, I'm going to try to write a script to do the opposite, import xmp sidecars for imported online and referenced files.
Don't rush unless you feel like it - I've already started planning out a free (as in beer and speech) XMP importer with a GUI so that you can choose how to map the XMP CORE tags that don't exist in Aperture. You've given me an extra idea, though - if we can decide on a set of custom tags, my importer could map the XMP CORE tags to them and your exporter could export those tags.
Thanks for the work!
Ian
P.S. I'll check through your script tomorrow, some of the database tables changed between 1.5.6 and 2.0, so you might need to add in a version check to be really thorough. -
Advice on allowing specific file types to be written to USB flash drive
We currently have all of the Removable Storage Access policies enabled (Computer Config > Policies > Admin Templates > System/Removable Storage Access) and would like to know if it is possible to allow specific file types to be exempted from this
policy. Specifically we need to allow certain users to write to USB flash drive but need to limit to MS Office files only. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Third party products can do that. GPO cannot.

I have 1 person who cannot open or save a file with a specific file name on his computer. If he does it at another computer he is fine, no one else has this issue. The error he gets when trying to open the file is { Cannot create file:missingperson.pdf. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder}
Any ideas on how to resove this. He gets this file sent to him on a regular basis, and cannot have the file name changed.
Thank youI have run across something similar. Assuming that this PDF they are getting through email is the same name, then this is how I fixed my problem.
When you get a file in an email and open it, it writes that file to the Temporary Internet Files folder. Lets assume the file name is filename.pdf If you open a file from email with the same name at a later time, it creates a file called filename(1).pdf. Open a file with the same name again, it creates filename(2).pdf, and so on. Once you get to filename(99).pdf, it will start giving you a lot of trouble. When I cleared out those filename.pdf's, everything went back to normal.
Hope this helps. -
Options for having cFP write and read file
I have a cFP VI that runs on a cFP 2110 controller for doing process automation on a custom piece of equipment. It seems that each month we use the same equipment for a slightly different automated process routine. What I have done in the past is to make a copy of my VI's and real-time project and then make the changes in the code for the new process. Most of the changes to the code between processes are just changes to numeric controllers to change ramp and slope times or the number of times the code repeats a set of steps. I have been playing around with writing a sort of configurations page to my VI to allow the user to change some numeric controls, save them to a file using the Read Key.VI and Write Key.VI. In the simple tests I have done, this works If I have a target VI on the cFP 2110 and a host VI where I can have the configurations page and save the file to my computer's hard drive.
The configurations file I would create would probably have 15-30 numeric controls and maybe some string commands. I have a couple of questions about doing this. Do I need to go back and create both Target and Host VI and communicate between the two using shared variables, or can I just keep my current VI and write a subVI that would save my files to the cFP controller? If I save the files to the cFP controller, can user set the numeric controller and save the file and/or likewise call-up any of say one of say 10 differnet files to populate the various sub-VI and run?
Finally, provided that I can write and read these small configuration numeric controller files to the controller, is there any advantage to writing the files to one method or the other: writing to the controller vs, creating a target and host VI to load the data?
Thank you for the help.

Test read write key.vi 58 KBStepanieO,
I finally had a change to play around with the cFP file write and read again. I was able to write a the cFP and read the file back using write to spreadsheet and read from spreadsheet. The one problem I can't seem to figure out is how you browse the cFP to select a file. If I enter the file name and path into the string command it works. But If I try to browse the cFP, the browse button only shows the computer hard drives. Is there a way to browse the cFP controller for a specific file?
Thank you for the help.

Search computers for specific files in domain
I need to find specific files in computers in domain environment. I tried several scripts (VBS and PS1) but I couldn't find antything really works for me. How can I manage this using PowerShell? (PS: I am a total newbie)
Thank you very much.As jrv mentioned, this forum is really for answering specific scripting questions. It's not a "write a specific script for me that meets my specifications" forum. Please understand that the forum participants are all volunteers and we really don't
have the resources to do free consulting. (See the forum guidelines at the top.)
If you need for someone to write a script for you, there is a
script request page. Be aware that you will need to write a detailed specification so the respondent knows exactly what you want to do. As with here, there is no guarantee of a response (or that someone will take the time to do this for you).
If this is critical to your business, you will probably need to pay a consultant.

Preview will not open .jpg files.
The Preview app will not open any file and I can not open Preferences for the app either.
I have tried to find and remove the com.apple.Preview.plist but I can't seem to find it.
I have looked for it in
~Users/me/Library/Preferences/
~Users/me/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Library/Preferences/
The file does not exist.
I tried trashing the folder ~Users/me/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview
and relaunching the app Preview.
After I restarted the app then the com.apple.Preview folder is created by the app with all of it's contents except the file com.apple.Preview.plist.

Interactive "Finder" window of specific files
Hi!
Is there a simple way to create a custom view of the filesystem from an obj-c program? Ie. a window with a list of specific files in the Mac filesystem that can be manipulated like opened, dragged to trash (removing them from their original location), etc.
Basically I start out with a list of paths - files around the system, in several folders, etc. -, and want to display this list as a window with file icons to the user, basically like a Finder window, to manipulate and work with. I'd like filetype icons and/or previews, context menu, drag-and-drop, etc., as if it were a folder opened in Finder.
Is there some built-in API code I can use to do this in a simple way? If not, what do I need for it to work? Where should I look in the dev documentation?the spotlight is set up to view all file types. im looking for a specific set of pictures, but they just dont show up in the finder search. they are there tho, coz i can look thru them. they show up when i import them to iphoto, but i dont use iphoto

Preview hangs on opening EPS files
Hi,
I have posted this question several times now, and I still hope to solve the problem. When I open an eps file Preview tells me that it will convert it to a pdf. It does that for ever or until I quit Preview.
I have already checked my fonts with Font book, but that didn't help.
I would really like to write my PhD thesis in LaTeX using eps graphics.
In the hope of a good answer thanks in advance,
Kurt
12 PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)IF you control-click on the file you want to open,
you can pick which application will be used to open
the file with.
This doesn't help?
I've gone into the .eps file's Get Info window and changed things so that all .eps files open in TeXShop. Right-clicking an .eps file gives me four choices: Preview, ColorSync, OpenOffice, and TeXShop. Preview and ColorSync hang, and OpenOffice doesn't display the figure properly. TeXShop is the only one that displays it correctly.
This raises two questions in my mind:
1) Which apps DO correctly render .eps files?
2) Is the hanging in ColorSync related to the hanging in Preview? ColorSync renders .pdf files correctly.
