SATA and GRUB? Is it possible? [solved]

Hi all
I suppose that is it possible to install GRUB on SATA disk.
I have the following problem:
I have these partitions:
sda1 - NTFS - win
sda2 - actually without filesystem
sda3 - boot linux ext2
sda5 - linux swap
sda6 - linux XFS
I would like to use GRUB as bootloader so I write the following to the menu.lst:
# (0) Arch Linux
title  Arch Linux
root   (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda6 ro vga=773
initrd /boot/initrd26.img
But I always get error 22 from GRUB. I suppose the I make mistake at the root line, because I currently dont know if there should be the boot or the root particion, but if the root then it should be right.
Next I install GRUB do boot partition, so to: sda3
I can install LILO correctly, but I wouldn't like to use LILO, I would rather to learn GRUB so can me anyone help where I make the mistake?
(and the primary or logical partitions are not playing the game there, or yes?)

I think you're trying to boot into your swap partition if your partition table corresponds with what you've posted above.
I believe thre root-line should be "root (hd0,4)" if your Arch installation resides on sda3. (GRUB starts with 0 and counts onward )
No! Then it should be (hd0,2)!
You have a separate boot partition, but your GRUB menu entry acts as if you don't. try this:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda6 ro vga=773
initrd /initrd26.img
Note that I dropped the /boot/ from the kernel and initrd lines. This is because root (hd0,2) accesses your boot partition directly so it becomes / (instead of /boot).
when you try to access /boot like that, you actually access the /boot folder on sda6, but this is empty, because your boot partition isn't mounted there, at that point in the boot process.
GRUB has no notion of /etc/fstab

If HDD and SSD are separate devices, what you want is possible. Otherwise i can't say, probably not.

  • Found a FIX for MBR and GRUB GRUB2 ISSUES!

I like many other have had issues with Linux (Ubuntu), and the MBR modification and GRUB.
My tragedy went something like this. I wanted to install Ubuntu on a netbook without a CD Drive.
I put a Live Ubuntu CD in my computer and booted up.
I connected a Sata drive through my esata port.
I proceeded to install Ubuntu on the external drive.
Drive would not work on netbook,
Compute would not boot to windows 7.
    What really happened:
When I installed Ubuntu on the external drive, GRUB was installed on my primary hard drive on my laptop.
If the external drive was attached to the laptop, GRUB came up and I could choose what I wanted to boot to (windows worked fine). But, if that drive was not connected, it gave the error "Device not present", that was it.
    DONT DO THIS:
I tried to use a windows 7 dvd from another computer to "repair", didn't work, I think it recognized it was an OEM install.
I tried to use an XP install disk, got blue screen of death, and the computer would not boot, not even with external sata drive connected (now I was starting to sweat)
    What worked:
I used the live Ubuntu CD to access my windows drive and did an immediate backup of all important files, all 112GB worth...
I saw I could purchase a windows 7 CD to repair my computer for about $10 (tempting but didn't)
    Solution:
I want to my wifes computer: Start->Control Panel->System Security (click: Backup Your Computer)
On the left hand column click: Create System Repair Disk
    Create Disk.
Took the disk to my laptop and booted it. I was concerned that It said Toshiba, not Lenovo. I clicked on the language and it noticed the MBR was not correct and asked if it could repair it? I said Yes, then it gave me the option to reboot. I rebooted and removed the CD. Everything is working fine!
I hope this helps someone sort through the sea of informaton concerning GRUB and the MBR file. This solution is for so  many people, like myself have no windows 7 disk to boot from.
    Lewis.

I should also point out that all the files of my website are in the root folder of my FTP, not in root/Website_Folder_Here folder.

  • Practical HDD Configuration on K7N2's Promise SATA and NV IDE3

    Folks,
There are lots of good fragments on the board about use of IDE3, but not much on total layout of disks for modestly disk intensive applications. Without going to server-type SCSI320 controllers and super-fast drives, here are some questions ---
1a. I'm going to assume until some wise person disuades me, that IDE will just saturate too quickly with good drives.
1b. With the K7N2 architecture, I'm guessing that the Promise chip will pump data on the bus and become less saturated than IDE. Do we know this for sure?
2a.  I come from the high end unix world before the days of gigantic storage devices. Back in the day it is an article of faith that disk striping almost always yielded better results.
I'm beginning to wonder about that for non-database PC applications for several reasons. An article that looks at queue depth also reveals that as you add striped drives to an SATA controller, performance may degrade. With just the Promise chip this is probably nit-picking, as were only going to stripe 2 drives. Still one wonders. Here's the paper --
    http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200406/20040625TCQ_1.html
2b. Is it possible to run the Promise chip as JBOD? This could be really interesting. Can the IDE3 drive run alone, outside the Promise array?
    AND FINALLY...
3a.  On this board there are many stories of woe about using the NV IDE3, and good bits of info, but nothing complete. How do you build and manage it?? I don't mean ONE drive in the system, but TWO on Promise SATA and one on IDE3.
3b.  Also, since it's controlled by NV, is there reason to believe that data will pump through more quickly than with the standard IDE bus (IDE1 and IDE2)??
    This should be interesting...
    Cheers, u.

  • Stupid or smart? SATA and USB drive in RAID1

    Hi All,
I would like to use the cubieboard as a fileserver. I would like to make a RAID1 setup of 2 hard drives, but the cubieboard only has 1 sata port.
Is it possible to make a RAID1 array from a SATA hard drive together with an USB drive? Would the USB drive slow down the sata drive?
    Best regards,
    Cedric

You can use the Get Image method and save it to .png (or .gif or .jpg):
EDIT: Note that because of the way snippets work, the snippet included a control reference. You can simply create the method directly from the control by right-clicking and selecting Create -> Invoke Node -> Get Image.

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards

  • Does the HP Envy 17t line have 2 SATA bays or 1 SATA and mSATA?

Does the Envy 17t line have 2 drive bays?  If so, is it 2 SATA bays or 1 SATA and 1 mSATA? Also, on the hardware selection screen:
If I choose that option, will you guys at HP install Windows on the SSD, instead of on the hard drive?  I found 256GB SSDS that are a lot cheaper than $295, but I searched around and found that HP apparently puts a restriction on the BIOS that prevents you from booting from an internal drive that you added.
EDIT: Perhaps I could also get the 256GB SSD and add my own hard drive.  But I still need to know if it has 2 SATA or 1 SATA and 1 mSATA.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,

    OK, so....
    1) why do you expect me to read the whole manual?
    2) I am aware that replacing a hard drive will void warranty.  I am not planning to replace a hard drive but rather add a hard drive in the second drive bay.
What I need to know is what hard drive ports are there, mSATA, 2 SATAs, etc. I have no idea what they mean when they say "support M.2 SATA".  Does that mean it supports M.2 SATA or is it an M.2 SATA port??
EDIT: apparently M.2 SATA is only for SSDs, since I can't find any M.2 SATA hard drives.
So what I know now is that there's 1 M.2 bay for an SSD, but I don't know what type of port the second drive bay has.
    Hi,
You did not read my reply too: I did not tell you to read the whole manual, I read it for you and clearly noted : " Please also check the following manual (page #2 and page #66) " The manual also show you port and type of the SSD   22 something, I will let you to find out.
    Good luck.

  • SATA and Linux

I was wondering if anyone could help me with getting SATA support up and running in Linux. I dual boot XP and Linux RH9 and have bought a Maxtor Raptor SATA drive I already have an old and clapped out Seagate. I eventually would like to get a second Raptor and set up a striped RAID array but for now I would just like to be able to get Linux to recognize the drive and to either shift my drive image over to the new drive or reinstall onto the Maxtor.
XP sees the drive if I use the old drive to boot up but if I try to do a fresh install onto the SATA drive with the old IDE disconnected it will not recognise a drive at all. Linux will not detect the SATA drive at all no matter what I do.
I understand I need to have some drivers at install time on floppy disk to do a fresh install?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I can't be any immediate help, I have a similar problem trying to dual boot WinXP and Redhat9
I have WinXP installed on a Intel RAID array and Redhat9 on a separate IDE drive, at the moment Linux can not see Windows
From information I've gathered so far Grub is the boot loader to use, there is a patch released by Intel for earlier versions of Redhat and Grub, not sure if it's of any use yet

The best way is to post the crash log next time it crashes. That will contain specific information that will help find the problem. Logs are cryptic but there are people here who can make some sense of them.
I'm running 5.1.7 under 10.6.8 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and it is completely stable. However I have no extensions installed. Incompatible extensions are a common source of Safari instability

The ability to do that would depend on the type of email account that you have. If it is a POP account, it cannot be done. If it is an IMAP account, it should sync across devices automatically. If you are not sure what type of account it is, who is your email provider?

I agree it is a very bad and wasteful design especially for users on small laptop screens.
You can drag it to whatever shape you want from the bottom left corner.
Click on the paintbrush to make the Format side panel disappear. However you will need to use that side panel for most formatting.
