"Save As" command with very slow Finder response in Tiger

Ever since upgrading to Tiger using the "Archive & Install" option, my applications have had very slow operation of the "Save As" command. The Finder takes a long time to open and display the Save As window with folders and file name etc. This has occurred on all of my computers - a PowerMac G5, an iMac G4 and a PowerBook G4. It has not changed with upgrades as far as 10.4.5. I have tried the following suggested in another post about slow Finder actions without success:
Refreshing and reblessing the following system files and the folder followed by reboot.
1. /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
2. /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
3. /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches/
Trashing the following files and a folder followed by reboot
1. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxx.csstore
2. /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-xxxxxx.csstore
3. /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/
I have also deleted the /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file and rebooted.
Does anyone else have this problem and how do I solve it?
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thank you Roger - this does seem to have solved the problem - my local Apple service people did not have an answer on this, so I'm grateful

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

    I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear.However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
    Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
    I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
    The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

    Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
    I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
    I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
    Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
    Or is anyone else having the same issues?
    thanks for your responce

  • Very Slow Site Response

    Dear All,
    I would like to say thanks for all.
    Let me explain our environment first then move on to the queries.
    Environment: We have one SharePoint 2013 application VM
    windows 2012 server, two web front end VM Windows 2012 server and dedicated SQL physical server.  The SP VM has 2*vCPU (2core) and 16 GB of physical memory, DB has 2*CPU (8core) and 16GB of RAM.  All servers are connected via 1 GB connection.  Intranet
    is connected via 100 Mb link and for internet via 5Mbps ISP.
    Farm Configuration:
    Both front end servers had Managed metadata service and distributed cache service
    Application server had CA (basic service) and managed metadata service, there was no excel, Visio and other service.
    Site: We are developed custom webpart and all other stuff
    like design at all.  The average page size is 1.5Mb.  The site was extended to intranet and internet (anonymous) zones.  We are already configured BLOB cache, object cache and output cache.
    Clarification & Queries:
    While we are doing the load test in intranet site by 300 Concurrent user in the LAN (i.e 100 Mbps). It getting very slow and "Service Unavailable" error.  Please, why
    the servers are not supporting 300 concurrent users?
    While we are performing the test, the network traffics are received from client (test agent) to WFE and send to DB. Please, Why the page cache and object caches are working or not?
    If the site will opened to internet, how the site and server are react to users?
    Please give us you needful help.
    FYR please look on to the load test summary https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/getfile/579571
    Thanks in advance.

    1) As a rule of thumb a SharePoint server can support in the region of 100 active users per SharePoint server. 300 is within the realm of expectations, depending on test content and definitions of active. You haven't mentioned the CPU load or the amount
    of memory paging you're seeing on the servers during the test. I would expect them to be maxed out on one or more of your servers? Note that RAM load isn't directly helpful as SharePoint is a greedy application and may be using all of it at very low load levels.
    2) Caching reduces the traffic but does not eliminate it. You're looking in the wrong place to see if the page cache is active. From memory you need to examine HTTP headers to verify if page caching is active or not.
    3) In what sense?
    4) No problem.
    The link you posted is broken.
    Finally you describe this in the title as 'very slow site response' which is not what you're describing in the text (fairly well) which is better described as a lower than hoped level of concurrency. Are you also getting slow response times at lower load?
    Really finally: You've posted this in the wrong forum, this is a search specialist sub forum. You would get more notice and assistance in the general forum for this thread. Hopefully a moderator can move it for you...

  • My iPad 2 is very slow in response, please suggest

    My iPad 2 32gb is very slow in response, It's used by my daughter. and has lots apps installed. and had 6gb still unused. If i click on any apps, it takes 2-3 minutes to load. Any app. please suggest how to improve performance.

    1. There may be a download stuck in another area such as a song or podcast that is preventing the app from updating.
    Go to the iTunes app on your iPad. Check to see if you have any downloads pending there. That pending download may be blocking app updates. If so, delete the item. That may get the app installation going again.
    2. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Then tap the App Store > Updates

  • Shift + command + f   very slow with cs4 clone and healing tool?

    using cs4-- i use the shift + command + f a lot to fade in or out the clone tool and healing brush.
    however in cs4 the preview is very slow-- even though i have 8gb of ram!
    the same process on the same file in cs3 is rapid-- even with only 2gb of ram-- so i assume this is a cs4 problem?
    any solutions appreciated.

    Do you mean photoshop elements 7 and not premiere elements?
    The fix posted above only applies to linux os systems, which is
    different from mac and windows.
    On windows vista Alt+left click is to set the clone source.
    Try the following steps one at a time.
    1. reset the clone stamp tool by clicking triangle on the far left of the
       tool options bar and select reset tool.
    2. Go to Edit>Preset Manager and click Done in the dialog that appears.
    3. Reset the elements 7 preferences by holding down the Shift+Alt+Ctrl keys
        at the same time you start elements 7. In the dialog that appears, click yes.
    Hope this helps.

    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • New folder, very slow typing response

    Just bought my 2nd 13" mb pro from the apple store, had them install an addition 2g memory before I took it home and ever since I opened the package a couple weird things are happening.
    1) In entourage, when I goto make a new sub-folder below my INBOX I type in the name of the folder and the type is very very slow, never keeps up and it jumbles the words in the wrong positions. Eg. I type FITNESS on the keyboard, and it comes up NIFITESS and is very slow doing that. Whats the deal? New laptop, original and registered office installed. (almost like it has low memory)
    2) The system sometimes will hang for 5-10 seconds doing normal tasks, always comes back but it acts like it has memory issues
    Any help?

    I am going to take her in tomorrow, since its new there is no reason why I shouldn't. The PRAM reset "seems" to have fixed the issue. Just not sure why I would have to reset that on a brand new machine 2 hours after it was turned on for the first time, makes me think something else is brewing in there.

  • Override action "save as" command with save for web batch processing

    Hi everyone,
    I've created an action that uses the save for web dialogue to optimise images for the web. When I use the batch command to process a full folder of images, even though I have "Override action "save as" command" checked, it ignores this and still uses the location that was used when the action was created.
    Apparently this is a known issue in CS6 and previous versions but I wondered if anyone knows whether this has been fixed in Photoshop CC?
    Appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

    Since save for web is an export plugin, none of the destination options have any effect on where the files are saved
    or the file names.
    Save for web only saves the files to the folder specified when you recorded the action.
    (it's always been that way and still is in photoshop cc)
    You might look at the Image Processor Pro
    (included in Dr. Brown’s Services 2.3.1)
    (has a save for web option)

  • Problem with very slow scale, rotate and translate

    Hi -
    Here is the basic problem. I want to take a bufferedImage (read from a jpeg earlier on) and then rotate it according to an angle value (radians) and then resize it to fit within a specifically sized box. My code works fine, but... I have to do this in a loop up to 200 times. The process is often taking several minutes to complete. If this is simply a consequence of what I am trying to do, then I'll accept that, but surely I am just doing something wrong? Please help!
    Thanks - here is the (working but very slow) code
        public Graphics2D get_shape_image(Graphics2D g, BufferedImage b, double shaperotation, double space_width, double space_height,
                float x_scale_factor, float y_scale_factor, float shapeTransparency){
            // Work out the boundimg box size of the rotated image
            double imageWidth = (double) b.getWidth();
            double imageHeight = (double) b.getHeight();
            double cos = Math.abs( Math.cos(shaperotation));
            double sin = Math.abs( Math.sin(shaperotation));
            int new_width = (int) Math.floor(imageWidth * cos  +  imageHeight * sin);
            int new_height = (int) Math.floor(imageHeight * cos  +  imageWidth * sin);
            // Create the new bufferedImage of the right size
            BufferedImage transformed = new BufferedImage((int) new_width, (int) new_height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
            // Create the transform and associated AffineTransformOperation
            AffineTransform at = new AffineTransform();
            AffineTransformOp affine_op;
            // Make sure our image to be rotated is in the middle of the new image
            double x_movement = ((double) (new_width / 2.0d)) - ((double) imageWidth / 2.0d);
            double y_movement = ((double) (new_height / 2.0d)) - ((double) imageHeight / 2.0d);
            at.setToTranslation(x_movement, y_movement);
            affine_op = new AffineTransformOp(at, AffineTransformOp.TYPE_BILINEAR);
            transformed = affine_op.filter(b, null);
            // Now we need to rotate the image according to the input rotation angle
            BufferedImage rotated = new BufferedImage((int) new_width, (int) new_height, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
            at.setToRotation(shaperotation, (double) new_width / 2.0d, new_height / 2.0d);
            affine_op = new AffineTransformOp(at, AffineTransformOp.TYPE_BILINEAR);
            rotated = affine_op.filter(transformed, null);
            // Do the scaling so that we fit into the grid sizes
            BufferedImage sizedImage = new BufferedImage((int) (space_width * x_scale_factor), (int) (space_height * y_scale_factor), BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
            double xScale = (double) (space_width * x_scale_factor) / (double) new_width;
            double yScale = (double) (space_height * y_scale_factor) / (double) new_height;
            at.setToScale(xScale, yScale);
            affine_op = new AffineTransformOp(at, AffineTransformOp.TYPE_BILINEAR);
            sizedImage = affine_op.filter(rotated, null);
            // Finally translate the image to the correct position after scaling
            double x_adjust = (space_width / 2.0d) - ((space_width * x_scale_factor) / 2.0d);
            double y_adjust = (space_height / 2.0d) - ((space_height * y_scale_factor) / 2.0d);
            // Set the transparency
            AlphaComposite ac = AlphaComposite.getInstance(AlphaComposite.SRC_OVER, shapeTransparency);
            g.setComposite(ac);
            // Draw the image as long as it's above 0 size
            if (sizedImage.getWidth() > 0 && sizedImage.getHeight() > 0)
                g.drawImage(sizedImage, null, (int) x_adjust, (int) y_adjust);
            return g;

    Your code worked okay in my system: busy at 200fps using 1.0f for alpha and
    the x/y scale_factor values.

  • Macbook Air (OS Lion) with very slow start up

    Hi all,
    I do not know why but my Macbook Air with OS Lion is taking to long to start up and this problem started without any reason.
    The Software if updated.
    I surfed on internet trying to find a solution, I experimented several potencial solutions but till now I could not solve the problem.
    It is very quick shutingdown but it takes arround 30 min. to start up.
    Thank you very much for your help

  • Issue with very slow DNS lookup. SBS 2008 R2.

    (Preface: sorry if this is the wrong forum...new at this! X-posted from Reddit)
    I'm stumped with this one. Last week, the server installed a few updates, no problem, a handful of security stuff. Since then, I've been having issues with DNS lookups on every computer on the network. It will hang on "looking up <domain>.com..."
    and then after 20-30 seconds, it will show a "can't find the server" error. BUT THEN! When you click try again, it loads right up. And then it works fine. For a day or so. Then, the next day, or maybe just a few hours later, sometimes while browsing
    the same site, it will do the same thing. It's like the DNS server just forgets the lookups it's already done after a time.
    Things I've tried:
    restarting server (duh)
    rolling back updates
    reinstalling said updates
    restarting all network hardware from the gateway outwards
    restarting the service itself while the server is running
    The only thing the event log shows is a single error during startup - event ID 4015. The text reads:
    "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly. The extended error debug information (which may be empty) is ' '."
    This error has only occurred once that I saw and did not occur on the most recent startup, but the issue is still present
    Active directory seems to be fine. No errors or warnings in it and no info from the event log is showing anything that seems to be helpful.
    I've looked around the KB but every article seems to be troubleshooting a much more specific problem or a different problem altogether, such as a misnamed, stuck, or incorrect DNS zone, or a DNS lookup that fails to complete altogether.

    Hi Craigglesofdoom,
    Would you please let us know current situation of this issue? Did you refer to above suggestions and solve this problem? If any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Please also run SBS BPA tool and check if find relevant issues.
    For Event ID 4015, please refer to following article and check if can help you.
    Event ID 4015 — DNS Server Active Directory Integration
    -->The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly.
    Please use dcdiag command-line tool. Any find?
    Domain Controller Diagnostics Tool (dcdiag.exe)
    Dcdiag for DNS: Test details explained
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • Help with very slow old palm desktop 1.0 for MAC

    No device
    Hi- I am a happy user of Palm m515, and hot synch it to a very old Mac that runs palmpilot desktop 1.0 , cause I like the printouts. Recently, it would start to  open the desktop, but it wouldn't open, I think due to out of memory. I purged calendar and todo from my handheld (which I had not done for years), and hot synced it. Address book & memos synced normally, and the syncing of todo's took hours, and I'm not sure it was successful. However, afterwords, I was able to re-open the desktop, and it works, but it is painfully slow, basically not functional.
    I realize this is legacy stuff, but if there is anyone out there who has suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    And, I have an old iMac G5 that I am about to retire and buy a new iMac, and if anyone has suggestions for replacing the handheld with one that will run a good todo/task program (and recommendation for that one), also much appreciated.
    And if there is a way for me to transfer the data from handheld m515 to my new iMac?
    Thanks

    I had an identical experience when I first got my handheld - the palm software wouldn't install on my iMac properly - the same error came up every time, and while it had successfully installed the desktop, hotsync manager was sadly missing. I spent hours playing with it to no avail, and the only solution I found was using it on my macbook running 10.5x (as opposed to 10.2.8). However, the date on the installer (2002) reflects the last time it was updated, which means that it should run with no difficulty on any machine since then. The .sit compression has nothing to do with it - it is one of the most common compression formats for the macintosh platform. It might help if you posted the exact error message you got, but a fairly common fix is to repair disk permissions for your hard drive in disk utility.
    Hope this helps

  • Mid-2011 Macbook Air with very slow wifi yet with OSX 10.9.1

    Yes, I am opening yet another topic on this pretty old issue because I am too confused with all that I have read so far (as also have not found a recent case similar to mine).
    I have a mid-2011 Macbook Air i5 13'.
    My home wireless network works just fine and smooth with a Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo and a humble Acer Aspire One D270 netbook.
    With my Macbook Air, connection is useless. If I want to search something on Google, I'd better off buying myself an air ticket and visiting their HQs to ask them personally to do the search.
    I have tried some "workarounds" with no success. Sometimes the internet seems to get a bit better (I said *a bit*), but nothing even slightly near what I get with my other two computers.
    Where should I begin from?

    Please take all the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
    Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
    Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or your computer's firmware.
    Step 3
    If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
    From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
    If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it (not applicable to OS X 10.9 or later.)
    Step 4
    Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Help with very slow connection if apple tv linked to wireless apple keyboard

    My husband and I trying to connect the wireless Apple keyboard to our Apple tv so we can get rid of the pesky and cumbersome Apple tv clicker. However, when we do so, our connection slows to a crawl and we cannot access sites like Netflix et al. We disconnected Bluetooth from our Mac Book Pro as we noticed that the keyboard serves only one master. This did not fix the problem. We are at our wits' end. Your help would be immensely appreciated.
    Oh, and also, I had been thinking of installing AirPort Utilty. Is this a good idea and why do I not see it in the AppStore, only on websites of dubious provenance?
    Thousand thanks,
    J and F
    Er, and while we're at it, why do we need to choose between my apple address and my husband's when we set up homesharing? This is another clunky thing that simply is opaque.

    However, when we do so, our connection slows to a crawl and we cannot access sites like Netflix et al.
    Not caused by the keyboard.  It connects via BluTooth, the video services over eithernet.  They have nothing to do with one another.  There is something else going on.  Have you tried connecting ATV via a wired connection instead of WiFi.
    why do we need to choose between my apple address and my husband's when we set up homesharing?
    Because you can only use one AppleId.  It would be a huge leagal mess if it displayed content from multiple accounts at the same time.  The copyright holders would never allow it.
