Save synonyms and hierarchy to DNG without export

What I want: to have DNG files as backups with all of the processing settings and the same keywords and snyonyms that exported files get. I dug around online and was discouraged to find other people asking the same sort of question... but dating back to 2008... with no answers. So, please, just tell me I overlooked something because this whole issue is getting annoying.
current workflow in LR3.5:
1) Import files with "Copy as DNG"
2) Process, keyword, and export JPEGs
3) **Save metadata to DNG files** <- This is where things break down and the same keywords and synonyms the jpegs get do NOT get saved to the DNG, and categories that shouldn't be added get added anyway.
4) Move the keyworded DNGs to a server to archive (moved and not exported; server restriction)
I am working with the photographers at work and their main request for this new workflow is to keep it simple and fast. Time between events doesn't always leave time for the work-arounds that seem to be required. As far as I see it, the only way to get everything in the DNG would be to export the DNGs again (and remembering to delete the original files from the hard drive and catalog). However, the sheer amount of extra time waiting for close to a thousand photos from each big event being re-written as DNGs when they are already in that format is simply mad!
The main goal here is to have the DNGs match the JPEGs so there is always a FULL backup. So if a file needs tweaks or a different crop to fit a layout, then the raw can be downloaded and edited with ease. We don't keep everything in the LR catalog because the large amount of photos eats hard drive space and the fact that multiple people need access to the files (so we use Extensis Portfolio on a server).
Here are some things I've tried to no avail: convert to DNG after keywording is complete (but it ignores synonyms and adds categories as keywords), save metadata to file (same thing: no synonyms, and adds categories)

Thanks for the replies. What I want to do is be able to come back to the files months from now, and be able to process out new derivative files, for a client request, say, secure in the knowledge that all my metadata and exposure info have survived the conversion to DNG and the move to the new hard drive.
So, if as Jonah says, the Virtual Copies stay associated with the files when they convert to DNG, then I can use them just like they were when I made them with the ORIGINAL RAW files. Is this correct?
Don, how does Drag and Drop work within LR? I did not know that existed. Please be kind enough to explain how one would MOVE a folder of newly-created DNG files from one drive to another.

Is there a way to convert my RAW files that I already imported into Aperture libraries, now into JPGS without exporting versions, then deleting the RAW-master originals and then importing the jpgs again? No, there is not, for the reason Ernie stated. Although I find the "library" metaphor ill-selected, it may help illustrate the point. You RAW files should be thought of as First Edition Hard-cover books. JPGs derived from the RAW originals are later editions. Some of them may closely simulate the first edition; some may be cheap paperbacks designed to be read once and discarded -- none of them is a First Edition.
What you want to do is somewhat tantamount to carting all the precious First Editions out and leaving them by them curb, and replacing them with smaller, lighter paperbacks.
You can do this, but Aperture makes sure you actually have to do the lifting and the carting.
If all you want is a Bookmobile, Aperture is not a good vehicle.
Fwiw, the User Manual recommends creating additional Libraries when you Library becomes too large. (I was 100% certain the User Manual recommended converting some Image's Masters from Managed to Referenced when your Library file became too large, but today I can no longer find the reference.) IME, you are much better served having one Library with your Image's Masters Referenced than having multiple Libraries.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

Safari Freezes in Yosemite on File/Save As and File/Export As pdf

Since I installed Yosemite a few days ago I can no longer save a webpage to a file or export to a pdf. All I get is the spinning beach ball on top of a finder window and need force quit safari.
The same problem occurs in Safe Mode. The problem does not exist when I log-in as Guest. I tried deleting the safari cache and removing extensions and plug-ins.
The problem appears to be linked some how to my user account.

Looking at the system log messages, I solved my own problem.
Seeing Dropbox in the list a few times led me to conclude Dropbox was the problem. When I pause synching on Dropbox, everything works perfectly.

I am a new user of PSE 7. I am able to enhance and add text to my photos but can't save the edits without creating a new PSD PSE file in addition to the original unedited photo. How do I save the phto itself as edited?

While this of course is the answer to the question, the idea of overwriting the original is simply a bad idea. If you do this, you can never get back to your original and start again. That text will always be there.
I advise the original poster not to do this. Save your edits as a different name.

How to save recording without export?

In Quicktime (using Lion), I used to start a new audio recording and it would record on the desktop. I would then "save as" and just name the file. Done.

It seems to me that your wounds are self-inflicted. If you don't want the file to be converted, then stop selecting the "Audio Only" format.
As indicated below the "Format" pop-up, this selection exports your current Linear PCM audio file in a generic format compatible will all devices and media players—i.e., as an AAC audio file.
On the other hand, if you wish to use the export option and save your audio recording in its original recorderd format, then use the defaulted "Movie" Format pop-up which refers to the MOV file container and is the generic QT file container that can be used to store audio, video, or any other compatible data format.
If you feel more comfortable seeing the word "Save" in the "Export/Save" window, then instead of selecting the "Export" File menu option, select the "Close" option (or press the red encircled "X" in the QT X player window to open the "Save" window depicted above. It basically offeres the same options as the File "Export" option since Apple has essentially merged the "Save, Save As..., and Export" functions into a single workflow. (Like you, I don't really like this arrangement and that is why I continue to use QT 7 Pro for most QT player-based operations.)

I believe there are a couple of similar threads about CC or CC2014 behaving this way that might give yo some hints, but CS5 is not supported on your OS and may not run properly regardless of what you do. An in-place OS upgrade or an attempt to migrate the application would both be major problems for ID, so if you did either of those things you'll want to uninstall, run the cleaner tool (CS Cleaner Tool for installation problems | CCM, CS6, CS5.5, CS5, CS4, CS3) and reinstall.

Saving a slideshow without exporting?

Is this possible? I want to do a few different slideshows, but I can't seem to find a way to save them without exporting. This is a pain because every time I want to make a change, I have to start over and re-export.
Surely I am just missing something, right?

Try trash your com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

Open report with "Save as" and "Open with" dialogue

Hi,
I'm using jasper reports within my application. I manage to open them in a new window but in that case the url containing JasperServer username and password is shown. I would like to open the report without showing the url.
I tryed using a database procedure (http://sqlcur.blogspot.com/2009/02/jasperreports-in-apex.html) but all I get is a alert window saying "file does not begin with ' pdf-'". Couldn't see what is the problem (I used the same procedure as Ino has in his example) so I thought of another way. Is it possible, when someone clicks a button to open a report, to open that report with a "Save as" and "Open with" pop up window?

Is there any way to merge 2 video layers to one without exporting?

Is there any way to merge 2 video layers into one without exporting as a new QuickTime movie? I have tried opening a blank player to copy and paste into, but it always forces it to be layered, even when I change the layer numbers both to zero. I tried extracting the video layers and omitting the audio tracks. Then I saved it as a new self contained movie. I am trying to burn the video to dvd with Roxio Easy Media Creator 9's MyDVD on WIndows XP, but I am also using a MacBook with QuickTime Pro. MyDVD will only recognize one video and audio layer at a time, hence, the other layers get skipped. There should be an easy way to merge two video layers without having to export it as a new movie, which takes 2 hours for this 2 hour TV show. Thanks for any answers.

FormConnect (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/formconnect/id432653695?mt=8&ls=1) can handle the filling out, signing, saving and emailing the contracts/forms but uploading the contract and the form is going to be a challenge because you’re dealing with paper documents that have to be scanned. If you can convert the scanned documents into an OCR program, you might be able to copy and paste the contract without having to retype it but the form itself is probably going to have to be recreated. Alternatively, you could use a document annotation program such as iAnnotate and mark up the contract with ink.

I updated the phone before backing it up on iTunes, now the update wanted me to connect the phone with iTunes and it says the phones in recovery mode and it must be restored before its used with iTunes. You have to restore the iPod, no ifs, ands, or buts...
After iOS is installed you will be asked if you what to set it up as a new iPod or if you want to restore from a backup.
If you have a good backup you can restore that and you're good to go.
If you don't have a good backup, then you end up with a "clean" iPod....

This is what is in the discussion. It really doesn't get any easier than this.
1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
