Saving Albums, Keyword Tags & Metadata in Photoshop 11

In Photoshop 11, when I create a new Album name or category, do I need to choose "Save Albums to File"?   Do I need to do something similar with Keyword tags "Save keyword tags to file"?  If I don't do this, would I lose my album names and keyword tags when I upgrade to a new Photoshop program?  What about my photo captions?  How are those saved?  Do I need to select all the photos in the album before I do this?
Also, under File, if I select "Save Metadata to Files", exactly what is saved?
I want to make sure that no matter what program I use my info goes with my pictures.

Most important to understand with the organizer (any version) is that if you want ALL additional information you have added to your catalog to be saved or backed up, and then restored totally, you have to backup your catalog from the organizer menu. Everything is stored in the 'catalog' folder: the catalog itself, a copy of all your media files and a backup.tly file which enables you to restore either on the same location or a new one (new computer, drive, new OS, new OS or PSE version...)

No, the wording is misleading. That command only saves the names and properties of your album panel, not the contents, in a text file. You can restore that structure in another album.

You don't need to if you have a PSE backup, but it may be a good idea, especially if you want to share your tags and ratings with another software (slideshow editor for instance). It's an additional safety measure.
There are three categories of data:
- what is stored automatically in the metadata section of the files (or in .xmp sidecar files) : mostly captions and file 'date original'
- what is stored manually via the 'write metadata to file' command : mainly tags, categories, ratings, notes, captions...
- what can't be stored because it's not information pertaining to individual files : albums, stacks, version sets. That's why you should prefer to use tags instead of albums if you don't need a custom sort order.
As you have seen, you also can save your album structure, and, more important, your tags and categories in text files to copy them in new blank catalogs.

  • Why aren't album keyword tags written to metadata using Write Keyword Tag... command

    When I display file properties within organizer it shows albums as keyword tags but after using the "Write Keyword Tag and Properties Info to File" command, the album keywords do not make it to the metadata.
    Why is this?  I would really like for it to work.
    I am using PSE version 8.  Does it change in version 9?
    Thank you!

    Ken,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I think the way that Adobe has implemented albums is a little more like keywords than a saved search.  The reason I say this is because of the following:
    1. They appear with the keyword tags to the bottom right of the photo in the organizer.
    2. When you right-click on a photo and choose "Show Properties", they are listed with the other keywords.
    3. If you try to create a keyword with the same name as an album (to get the album name written to the metadata), PSE warns you that you already have a keyword with the same name.
    I see what you are saying but I think the Adobe should either make a clear distinction between albums and keywords or at least give you an option to write the album keywords to the metadata if you choose.
    Do you know how to submit product enhancement requests?
    Thanks again for your time.

  • PSE 9 Organizer Keyword tags

    I have just upgraded from PSE8 to 9.
    In the organizer I cannot display the keyword tag icons beneath individual images.
    I tried Edit Preferences Keyword Tag and Albums - Keyword Tag display - and chose the display with the photo icon. This changes the display in the Keyword Tag listing box but not beneath the individual images. The tags are all being displayed the same and the only way to distinguish them is by running the mouse over them. Is there a way of getting the PSE8 type of display?

    Back to the original question, after thinking about this for a couple days I have had two ideas for workarounds:
    1)  Copy my tag names into the photo metadata and create a new catalog to bring all of my images into.  This will allow me to keep all of my existing tags, and it MIGHT solve the tag display problem based on a test with a couple images in a new catalog.  The downsides to this are a) permanently writes my tags into the photo metadata which will be bad if I decide to change something later, b) loses all version sets, and c) loses all albums (although I don't have that many).  I found instructions for this workaround at http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Merging_Catalogs.
    2)  Live with the lack of color tag display in Organizer, and use reverse searches to find missing tag categories.  For example, if I want to find all photos that do not have a "Places" tag, I check the box next to the "Places" category (which also selects all sub-categories and tags below this).  Then I go to the Options drop-down in the Find Bar and "Hide best match results" and "Show results that do not match".  This gives me every image in my catalog that does not have a tag from the "Places" category, so I can go through and tag these as appropriate.
    I would have gone with #1 if it weren't for the permanence of the keywords.  I guess I have a commitment problem (or I just haven't got my tag hierarchy figured out yet).  Instead, I am going with #2 which should give me most of what I need for now.  I will still hold out some small glimmer of hope that Adobe manages a fix for this issue down the road.

  • Reinstalled PSE7 - how to retrieve albums and keyword tags? [Was: Question]

    Hiya
    Using Photoshop Elem’7- I have had a major problem with my pc and I have gone back to factory settings, I have reloaded the Photoshop software – I can see all my photo’s back on my hard drive and also on Photoshop but I cannot retrieve my albums and keyword tags
    Can anybody help me on this topic?

    Hi
    This is actually the Photoshop forum, and you would do better in the Elements forum.
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements
    But it seems that Elements creates a catalog file where I suspect it keeps the info you are looking for.
    This is one link, but you could try Google with Adobe Photoshop Elements catalog location, ot just go ask in the other forum.

  • Photoshop 7 to 11 Upgrade Adds Wrong Keyword Tags

    I recently upgraded from Photoshop 7 to 11 and now I'd finding that my photos have been automatically assigned additional and incorrect keyword tags. Most prevalent seems to be place and event mistagging. I'm now going back through all my photos to verify the correct tags and remove the incorrect.

    Please follow the link I posted; they'll be able to help you better over there.
    This is the forum for the full version of Photoshop, and it works differently.

  • How do I save my setup for Photoshop Elements 11 that I created for category - sub-category - Keyword Tags

    how do I save my setup for Photoshop Elements 11 that I created for category - sub-category - Keyword Tags  I would like to use the setup for other Photoshop Elements

    First are you going to use the same keyword/categories hierarchy in the same Elements version (or newer)? If so, using the backup/restore process will also restore your hierarchy.
    If you want to create the same hierarchy in an older Elements version, it's possible to save that hierarchy in a special text file and to restore it in the new catalog in the destination computer. It's also possible to restore it in another catalog in the same computer.
    Look at the title bar of the keywords panel. Next to the '+' sign on the right, you see a small icon which opens a menu offering the option to save or to restore the text file.

  • Have new PC with windows 8. I own photoshop elements 9 and I have lost all my pictures, albums and tagging, how do I retrieve them?

    I own elements 9.  All files were backed up to a external hard drive and then downloaded to a new PC, with windows 8.  I have lost all my pictures, albums and tagging.  How do I retrieve all of this back into Elements 9?

    It appears that you have made a backup via Windows and not via the integrated backup/restore process in the organizer. Since the albums and tagging are stored in catalogs, they are lost unless you also made a backup of the catalogs themselves.
    The correct way to move your catalog(s) and images to a new computer:

    Is your old computer still useable ?

  • Retrieving missing keyword tags from a previous version of Photoshop Elements

    I just purchased an upgraded version of Photoshop Elements 12 and Premiere Elements 12, but after all my photos were converted to the new version, all of my keyword tags from the previous version are not showing.  How do I retrieve them?

    Thank you so much.  I had tried to use both of those buttons, but I didn't know that I had to use them in that order in order for the tags to show up, and I couldn't find the answer in the Adobe help section, either.  Looks like all my tags are there and the problem is solved.  Thanks again.

  • Photoshop Elements 9.0 Oganizer loses list of Keyword tags

    I use Windows 7 and I have had this problem in both PSE 8.0 and 9.0.  If I have the Organizer open for any amount of time, the list of my Keyword Tags on the right disappears.  I either have to Optimize the Catalog or close and reopen the program.  Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?  Thanks for your help.

    Ok. in that case this is just a refresh issue. When you access Organizer through remote connection, tags and album pane looks blank but these gets populated on relaunch.

  • Transfer tags from Photoshop Album Starter Edition to other Photoshop products?

    Here's a scenario for you, which might require some expert advise:
    We have a database (on a network server) with ~6000 pictures which are extensively tagged using Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 installed on a client PC. The client PC had to be swapped out, so I installed a new PC with Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0, and moved the tag database (....\All Users\bla bla bla) from the old to the new PC. Now, when I start Photoshop Album Starter Edition, I can see that the software has found my images and tags, but the software displays a pop-up asking for an unlock-code, and I cannot get past this popup.  When registering using the form in the popup, I receive an email from Adobe saying that the product is discontinued and cannot be used anymore. I have Googled like a maniac to find unlock codes, but when entering such codes in the unlock code window, the "unlock"-button stays disabled, so I am not able to start the software to access our image- and tags database.
    So I wonder:
    1) Is it possible to unlock the software and continue using it?
    2) Does any other version/variant of Adobe Photoshop allow import of the tags database from Photoshop Album Starter Edition?
    Looking forward to your clever ideas on this one.
    With kind regards
    /Nils

  • Keyword tags on JPG from Photoshop Elements

    Hi,
    I have just started to use Lightroom and used to use Photoshop Elements for organizing my photos. And in Photoshop element I only put a keyword tag on the JPG file on and not on the RAW file. And after that I "hided" the RAW files in Photoshop elements.
    When nI ow is using Lightroom I would like to use the feature that "combines" the RAW and JPG file but Lightroom can't do it because of the keyword tag. Is there a way to get Lightroom to combine the files and add the keyword tags to the RAW file? Or how can I get this to work.
    Thanks

    I have tried to remove the keyword tag in Lightroom and also remove the pictures in the catalogue. And import them again and now the tools combines the photos. But as I have a lot of these photos I would like not the use this way forward... as I have to tag them again...

  • Removing Keyword tags and still showing photos in album

    I inadvertantly put extra keyword tags on two groups of photos that didnt belong.   I have removed them, but the photos still show when I select that keyword tag along with all the correct ones.  But now they have the Marked out circle with the line in it..   Is this a known bug in Photoshop Elements 6.  I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a quad processor.....

    See if this FAQ applies:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Searches_are_showing
    If it doesn't, perhaps you can post a screen shot of your entire Organizer screen showing what happens.   Upload the screen shot using the camera icon in the menu bar of the post-message window (don't try to attach it as a file).

  • How to implement metadata keyword tags

    Can someone please advise me on how to implement meta keyword tag <meta name="keyword" content="..."> for individual community page? We have a set of keywords for each community page. I know we can just add the line above to base page layout if they are common keywords to all the community page but not sure whats the best way to add unique set of meta keyword tags to individual community page? FYI - We are using UCM for managing content for our site.

    I always did this using a property on the page object.
    1. Create a new property called "meta-keywords" and associate it to the community pages object through the global object property mapper utility.
    2. Edit your community page and add any keywords you desire.
    3. Write a custom tag for said property that takes a uuid as input (this way you can migrate and the tag remains the same.
    4. same idea works for any meta tag.
    Note: you are limited to 255 characters this way.
    Or you can probably code some kind of tag that reads from UCM as well, but i always did it the above way.
    Here is a tag example:
    public class MetaPropertyCurrentPage extends ATag {
         private OpenLogger log = OpenLogService.GetLogger(
                   OpenLogService.GetComponent(PTDebugHelpers.COMPONENT_PORTAL_COMMON),
                   "customizations.tag.standard.MetaPropertyCurrentPage");
         public static final RequiredTagAttribute UUID;
         public static final ITagMetaData TAG;
         static {
              TAG = new TagMetaData("currpageproperty",
                        "Displays the value of the property in the current page from the uuid.");
         UUID = new RequiredTagAttribute("uuid", "The UUID for the property you want to open.",
    AttributeType.STRING);
         @Override
         public ATag Create() {
              return new MetaPropertyCurrentPage();
         @Override
         public HTMLElement DisplayTag() {
              log.Info("Entering meta lookup");
              String objectid;

                   log.Info( "found objectid" + objectid);
