Saving on OS X tiger.

Hey, i have a problem with a clients freehand mx when he
saves on on the file server this appears:
"Could not save the document because there was a problem with
the file server"
freehand 11.0.2
clients mechine g4 os x 10.4.5
os x server 10.4.6
any help would be great Thanks.

Repairing permissions only changes the permissions of
Applications and
their files/folders that have been installed with the
official Mac OS X
installer program. It makes a record or what permissions are
supposed
to be and then reverts them back if necessary. It has nothing
to do
with and makes no changes to your local files/folders that
you have
created. So if a folder or file has been accidentally marked
(sometimes
without your specific doing so) as Read Only it will stay
that way until
you manually go into the Get Info box and change it.

  • No JPG option When saving from Previewer?

I liked the jpg option when saving a screencapture in Tiger. Why was that jpg option removed in Lion?
Now if you want to save a png image as a jpg you need to buy software to do that.
    Am I missing something?
    Thank you.

Export in .jpeg -- it's the same as .jpg -- an explaination for why it has a different extension but is the same thing can be found at the link below.

  • Unable to save HP printer presets under Leopard

I frequently print a colored first page from the manual paper tray and the rest of the document from another tray. Presets previously saved, work flawlessly under Tiger. I am not able to save presets under Leopard - all attempts revert to default settings. Maddening because we do numerous different print jobs - some requiring staples and collating, some with a color first page, some a mix of both. One of a kind -- no problem -- print 50 and you have to set the preset for each copy. AARG!! Solution -- unacceptable!! Boot under Tiger.

This is a known problem and will most likely require an update form Apple:

  • Moving iWeb from iLife06 to iLife08

    Hi-
What is the correct method to move my "Domain" file that I saved from 06 and Tiger on my extHD, to my new Leopard system with iLife08? Thanks, Tim

    Hi-
I tried what you suggested and it seemed to have all my stuff on the iWeb, but all the folders are red/ not published, and there is an update window that opens. I click update, and it says updating, and then finally, it says there is not enough space on the disk. What am I doing wrong, and is there something I should so differently? I can reinstall iLife08 if necessary.??

  • Saving .eps to .pdf in Classic with Tiger???

    Hi,
I have a iMac and have just updated to Tiger OSX 10.4.2. I run Tiger as my general operating system however my version of Quark Xpress runs in the Classic Environment OS 9.
In the past I have saved a Quark Xpress file as an .eps and then gone into Acrobat Distiller and saved it as a .pdf. However since loading Tiger my distiller will not save my .eps file as a .pdf even though I still use both Quark and Distiller in Classic Environment??
Any assistance you could provide to rectify this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Joanne Matthews

Thanks, I just tried that but it doesn't retain the fonts? Yet the fonts are active. Any other ideas??

  • Copying Saved Data/Folders to a Fresh Install of Tiger

    Hi Gang
My thanx to Kappy and Macjack for providing the file paths and information below.
    I'm doing a fresh install in a new HD. Have done this many times. Just making sure about a few things. I'm interested in the following Data/Folders which I will copy from the old drive before I remove it;
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copying the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copying the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copying the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
Just wanna make sure; Do I have remove/delete the original folders, then paste these in? Do I paste over the old folders?
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hey BD How are you?
    Ok well it's getting a wee bit confusing now;
"but if you have anything in your present mail folder, move that folder to the desktop first" Don't know what you mean here, but I'm pretty sure I had handle on this.
Any SAVED folders; Mail, Safari etc., (when put back in the right place), will automatically replace those folders. I understand this. I'll save the folders I mentioned above, before I remove the old drive. Then put them back where they belong in the new formatted drive, (a replacement drive). I'm the same original owner of both drives.
I was also asking about old 'In' Mail, and 'Sent' Mail. Will all this data be returned/saved with the /Home/Library/Mail folder?
"Did you save the Mail.plist from the other one?"
    Yes, and others too.
"Did you setup the account on this one yet with the same info?"
No, but I was going to.
    Thanx
    Mike

  • Tiger Server Panther Clients Word v.X problem saving autorecovery

Dear All, We were running 10.3.9 server and clients untill this weekend when I updated to 10.4.3, now amungst the other problems we had that I fixed is one I cannot fix. Word keeps running into problems saving it's autorecovery information when using either 10.3.9 clients or 10.4.3 clients. We use remote home directories, bu they spend most of their time in our general "Shared" file. The exact wording of the first window is "Word cannot complete the operation because too many files are open." Then in parenthases(sp) is the name of the temp file (something like Word Work File A_2). Then the second window is "Saving AutoRecovery File is postponed for (and the file name). Any help would be apreciated.

Hi all, I've been suffering from the same issue and finally found something that works for me with Word v.X. (Server 10.4.4 (8G32)) YMMV.
Creating the .TemporaryItems didn't help, although it's being used by something, so maybe it's helping with some other issue.
Deleting Work preferences working, but only for the initial launch. Second time did not work.
Isolated the problem to the "Office Registration Cache X" file. With it deleted, Word launched each time. After some experimenting, I found that replacing it with a locked document file (in particular a .wpd file - maybe because the app isn't on the computer) of the same name kept it from creating a new file and Word will now open each time.
If any one want's to experiment to find out why that file is causing the problem (assuming the fix works for you), I'd be grateful. Otherwise I will be putting the replacement file in each users account (User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Registration Cache X). (Well each user that has the problem in the first place. As noted in other posts it's not a problem for everyone.)

    Make a backup/copy of:

    - Home/Library/Application Support/Address Book for Address Book
    - Home/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist for Safari bookmarks

The auto-complete feature when addressing new mail comes from Previous Recipients in Mail. I don't have my Mac with me at the moment to see if that is stored anywhere accessible.

  • Saving Mail before erasing hard drive and reinstalling tiger

I might need to erase my hard disk and reinstall Tiger. I would like to keep my mail app how it is. Last time I tried syncing my Mail App to my online mail accounts not all the mail was downloaded to MAIL. Anyone know some ways to go about this.

First reinstalling Tiger is rarely necessary.
Second .Mac sync only syncs the rules and preferences for Mail. It does not sync messages.

  • I need help with Tiger 10.4.11 saving / deleting files on a Win 2003 Server

Some of my Mac users are experiencing extremely slow file saves to my Windows Server 2003 server. It is not specific to file types. Illustrator, Quark all take forever and the file size is not the issue either. They are also having to force quit Finder after attempting to delete files from the Server.
I have found that if they boot into Safe Boot they can delete the files without a problem. As soon as I do a normal login the problem returns.
The problem seems to be specific to the machine. If user A logs on to her Mac she has problems deleting files from the server. If she logs into a Mac that isn't having problems (using her login) she doesn't have problems. If User B who has no problems on her Mac logs into User A's Mac then User B will have the same problems.
In order to rebind the Mac to the Active Directory I had to remove the Mac from AD. So I don't think it's the Computer's SID. I even tried unbinding the Mac, changing it's name and then Binding it to AD. Same problems.
I thought it was the Mac and just wasted a day wiping the Mac and reinstalling everything on it, but when I went to delete a file from the Server, finder locked up and I had to force quit finder.
I even changed the IP Address of one of the Macs having problems, but that didn't work either.
I've done a Permission repair as well with no change.
    Anyone help?

OK, there was a System Events in the System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items, but after removing it and restarting I still had to force quit finder after attempting to delete some files off of the server.
I do not have (or can't find) the /private/var/run/startupitems.
The Library/StartupItems has 2 entries: AdobeVersionQueCS2 and IntegoCommon, both of which I removed the other day and tried to delete files after rebooting with the usual (not good) result.
In the System/Library/StartupItems there are 16 items. I will list them as I am not sure what shouldn't be there. I believe that they should all be from Apple though:
    Apache
    AppleShare
    AuthServer
    CrashReporter
    Disks
    FibreChannel
    IFCStart
    IPServices
    Metadata
    NetworkTime
    NFS
    NIS
    PrintingServices
    RemoteDesktopAgent
    SNMP
Thanks for your help so far.

  • Should I Give it Up and Go Back To Tiger?

That's the decision I'm wrestling with right now. My issues are not legion. Mostly they revolve around three things: Stability, Usability and Speed.
    STABILITY:
I get odd freezes and random program crashes that have now twice resulted in having to push the power button to reboot. The mouse moves, but nothing works, no menus, can't even bring up the Force Quit window to quit an offending app.
In one day Mail crashed over-and-over until I could no longer use the computer and shut down and pulled out my PowerBook to send an email! After rebooting and fsck'ing and repairing Permissions the problem seemed to go away, but I have way too many crashes of even Apple programs that ought to be playing nicer with Leopard.
I also get a LOT more bouncing beachballs with Leopard in almost every app than with Tiger. Although my main Mac is not Intel or even G5, I should still be well within the system requirements for Leopard with a dual 1.25GHz G4 with 1.75 GB of RAM. My system drive has over 100GB open (I have four internal drives equaling 1.3TB) and I keep all of my software updated.
I do have one 2nd party PCI USB 2.0 card that doesn't require drivers and it works, but I haven't tested Leopard without that card, but I do have USB 2.0 devices that I need to run, so that alone would require a step backward if I couldn't run the USB 2.0 card because of some odd compatibility issue.
    USABILITY:
Two things just irritate the heck out of me and one is a minor irritant that I probably just need to learn more about
One is the lack of hierarchical menus in the dock. Unlike a lot of people I like Stacks, but I'd like to have the option to go seamlessly from a Stack to a hierarchical menu.
The other is the inability to put a custom icon on a dock drive or folder. I have to create a dummy folder, put a blank space at the front of the name and use it as the icon for the item, but even then, all those icons behind it clutter up the look of the folder/drive and thus, the dock as a whole. There should be an option for having a SINGLE clean icon without going through odd gymnastic to get one!
I have a very small issue with the behavior of Spotlight. In Tiger, a Spotlight search's results were displayed in a more quick and orderly way, at least that how it seems to me. In Leopard when you click "show all" although it categorizes them as I have it set up in Spotlight's preferences, there isn't a clear delineation between classifications and there is no "info" button to quickly see the path and general info for the file. To see info you have to right click and choose "Show Info" unless I am missing something.
However, the addition of Boolean logic categories by option-clicking the plus sign or clicking to add categories to the search rules negates a lot of my gripe about Spotlight. I'd like to see it be as responsive as Tiger, but it's hard to argue with the ability to drill-down to exactly what you're looking for.
But, Spotlight is also MUCH slower than Tiger's Spotlight which leads me to:
    SPEED:
As mentioned, I have one of the fastest G4s and a dual processor to boot and I'm nearly maxed on RAM, so you'd think Leopard would run faster, but there is a general lag in usability across the board. Not a killer lag, but noticeable and the aforementioned beachballs pop up enough to add even MORE of an irritating lag to the process. I find myself hitting "Force Quit" a LOT more often and seeing "'program x has stopped responding" in the Force Quit menu.
I like Leopard. There are some nice features that truly do improve the overall utility of the OS, so I think it's a good release, but there are just too many issues for me now, maybe because of my G4 PowerMac, it seems to have fewer issues (except for the speed thing) on my FW 800 Powerbook, but for now I want fast and logical and Tiger is all that.
I will return to Leopard if I step back because it's just too good an update to ignore and it is after all, the future of Macs, but right now Leopard is killing my productivity. On more than one occasion I've lost data before saving when a crash happened and that was a VERY rare occurrence with Tiger.

    Thanks for the responses!
I always do a clean install, backing up, formatting the drive, etc. I find it reduces the number of issues overall.
I was going to do a dual-boot setup with Tiger originally, but I've had such good luck with OS X updates that I wasn't concerned. But since I've had these problems, I hadn't revisited that option so, since I eventually will return to Leopard that may be a good solution.
However, I just read elsewhere after writing this as one of you mentioned, that the 10.5.2 update is slated to be a big release with a lot of fixes, so that may be worth the wait before doing anything precipitous.
There is one very odd thing, though . . . I have an iPhone and while I could sync without a problem initially, recently I've had some issues syncing until now I can't sync at all. I took the iPhone in and they swapped it out for a new phone, but I came home and had the same issues, so before returning to the Apple store I tried it on my PowerBook (running Leopard) and sure enough, it synced with no issues!
So I'm wondering if there isn't some problem that may be hardware-related that is causing me to have more issues on the PowerMac side than on the PowerBook side? I think I need to strip the PowerMac down to its original components, basically unplug everything but the keyboard and mouse, remove that USB card and see what happens.
It ran fine under Tiger so I'm not happy about having to do this, but hey, it's the price of progress and at least it's not that "other" OS!
BTW, I think it's funny how some tech writers are trying, straining to compare the issues that some of us are having with Leopard with the Vista release which was an unmitigated disaster!
I'm content to work through it until I find the same stability I had under Tiger with this new cat . . . let's hope the new update does the trick. Anyone heard a release date for 10.5.2?
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Client Upgraded from Tiger to Leopard Can No Longer Connect to Tiger Server

I just finished upgrading a G5 2GHz DP Powermac from Tiger to Leopard. This was an Archive and Install upgrade with importing the old settings. After verifying the account migration, including .Mac connectivity, and fixing all 3rd party software compatibilities/upgrades, I tried to connect to our Tiger 4.11 server by clicking on the server's Icon in the Shared section of the Finder Sidebar. The finder then switches to browse the the server for shares: "Connecting..." is displayed under the tool bar, with a "Share Screen..." and "Connect As..." buttons to the right.
At this point the "Connecting..." remains displayed with the spinning circle in the bottom right of the Finder window.... spinning. This situation continues for several minutes until is seems the system gives up.
If I click on the Path button on the Tool Bar, and go up to the Shared level, ALL the Shares on the Network are displayed, including all the Tiger Client machine shares. I can click on the triangle beside the Tiger Client's icon, and all the drives and home directories on the Mac are listed. All the client shares can be accessed without any issues. NOTE: There are no other Leopard clients on the LAN.
Prior to the Leopard upgrade, this client could connect to the Tiger server as well. All the other clients on the LAN can access the Tiger server also.
On the Leopard client I have tried clicking and the "Connect As..." button and using the menu "Connect to Server" and specifying the server's IP, and I get the same "Connecting..." message with a "non-connecting" result.
I can only assume that somehow the Account Name and password are not being passed correctly. But, using "Connect As..." should resolve that. However, "Connect As..." does not give me a user/password window!
If I check the AFP Access log on the Server, the only messages displayed are "Mounted Volume..." No messages in the error log, and no messages in the "Connections" section.
Can anyone help me figure out why the Leopard client can not connect to the Tiger Server?
My apologies if the description of my problem is a bit disjointed. I have been thrown into server admin and am learning "Trial by Fire".
Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    OK. A quick update.
After waiting for about 10 minutes for the rotating circle in the bottom right corner to stop, I was able to click on the "Connect As..." button. It took another 10 minutes, but the Connect As window eventual popped up. I entered the Userid and Password (saving to Keychain) and was able to see all the sharepoints on the the server. I browsed all the connected drives and folders without issue.
I then disconnected from the server. Reviewing the AFP logs on the server shows messages for the connection Login and Logout.
I then tried to reconnect to the server, and again another 10 minutes wait, although this time the Leopard client eventually connected automatically with the proper User, as per the AFP logs confirms.
Although, the client can now connect to the server, for it to take 10 minutes will be unacceptable to management, not to mention the end user. Tiger clients can connect in a couple seconds!
Is there a way to reduce the Leopard login time to, say, a couple seconds, like it does with the Tiger clients?
Again, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Panther to Leopard or Tiger for G5 Imac

    Hello,
I am in the process of trying to back up my computer. I bought an external drive that has software that is compatible with OS X10.4.8+. I have panther which is X10.3.x and cannot use the software to back up my data. If I do not upgrade my operating system what is the best plan and how do I back up the data I have on my computer? I am considering upgrading to Tiger because it was the last operating system designed just for the G5 chip. Leopard scares me because I have not read anything about it that is positive with an older non Intel chip imac. Anyone have good experiences with Leopard and their G5 imac? Time machine on Leopard is interesting to me and would be the main reason to update but if the whole operating system does not work well with the G5 imac then I have not improved my computer.
    Mark

Use SuperDuper! to make an exact bootable clone of your system to your external firewire drive. That way, if anything goes wrong, and it shouldn't, you will have everything saved.
A hint, when you have installed Leopard, use the [10.5.6 combo updater|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1056co mboupdate.html] to get yourself up-to-date.

  • Saving Video from a Sony Handycam HDD - I'm stuck in iMovie ****!

We foolishly bought a Sony Handycam HDD video camera last year, thinking we could save our movies to DVD using the computer.
I can do it using the laptop we got my daughter for Christmas, but this isn't really feasible. My G4 has iMovie 3.0.3. and even though I recently upgraded to a 2Ghz processor, I still can't install the iMovie I bought with iLife '08 2 years ago.
I need to be able to save files from my Sony handycam to my computer and burn DVDs. Or even if I could just burn them without saving, that would be fine.
I have heard that I need StreamClip from Apple and I see that I need to buy Apple MPEG-2 converter first and then I see in the feedback category for that product, everyone who gave it bad marks was trying to do what I'm trying to do. Then I read somebody recommended Quicktime Pro...
    I'm completely confused..and frustrated!!!!
Is there a version of iMovie that will work for me even though I just have a plain old 2Ghz processor?
Would Quicktime Pro or some other software do it for me? I don't mind paying $30 for some software that I'm only going to use for saving movies from camera to DVD, but I'd rather upgrade iMovie if that was possible.
    thank you.
(I'll come in off the ledge now...)

Hey. This is a really good question because I too have run into video problems with mine. After a couple of years I couldn't stand it anymore so I sprung for a MacBook Pro for myself this past Christmas. When I say video problems I mean I can't watch a DVD, a video on the net, etc. It's a pain.
But I still haven't given up on it. Currently it's just used for storage. Did that processor upgrade make any difference for you? I've been looking into that upgrade along with an upgrade to Leopard on the Quicksilver to see if it can handle the video.
We bought a Panasonic video recorder and have a G5 (pardon me but I don't know the processor speed). Even that computer wouldn't recognize the video files stored on the recorder and refused to import them. I called Panasonic and they explained I needed iLife '09. (Currently on the G5 there is '08 and it is running Tiger.)
What you might want to do is a couple of simple upgrades. First the OS to Leopard and then upgrade your iLife to '09. I can say that the camcorder works like it should with iMovie '09 just like the rep at Panasonic said it would.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to stop attachments saving to hard drive when viewed?

    Hi
Possibly a silly question with an obvious answer....
I've very recently updated from iBook with OSX 10.2.x to OSX 10.4.7, which includes a newer version of Mail that seems to handle received attachments differently.
In the past, when I opened an attachment within mail, I would open a temporary (read-only) file which I could choose to save the hard drive or simply close once I'd finished viewing it.
With Mail 2.1, however, everytime I open the file simply to view it, a copy is saved to my downloads folder. If I close that file, the saved file remains within the downloads folder (i.e. it's not a temporary file), and if I open the file a second time, a second copy of the file is downloaded to my downloads folder.
I much, much, much prefer the previous system, which didn't leave me with a cluttered downloads folder, and which didn't use up valuable hard drive space by keeping (multiple) copies of files that I have no use for. Is there an option to set up Mail to handle attachments the same way as the earlier version?
I notice that there's an option (in Mail Preferences) to "remove unedited downloads" when "mail quits" (for example). Is that the only option I have to keep my harddrive free from unwanted attachments?

    Hello Rob.
The following was copied from Tiger Mail Help which cannot be changed to the way Mail.app attachments were handled with Jaguar and Panther Mail.
Files attached to (or enclosed in) an email message are stored as part of the message. Since attachments are part of the message itself, they are usually deleted when you delete the message. You can save separate copies of attachments by clicking the Save button in the message window.
Mail also temporarily saves an attachment as a separate file on your computer when you open the attachment by clicking it in the message. The file is saved in the Mail downloads folder, located by default in the Library folder of your home folder.
To change the location of the downloads folder:
Choose Mail > Preferences and click General.
Choose Other from the Downloads Folder pop-up menu and select a location.
By default, documents remain in the downloads folder until you delete the message. To have Mail delete these documents when you quit Mail, or to not delete them, use the “Remove unedited downloads” pop-up menu in the General pane of Mail Preferences.
Mail will not delete an attachment that you edited and saved.
