Scanning and recognizing highlighted text

Is there a way to print a PDF: Highlight with a marker by hand. Then rescan the document and the software shall recognize the highlighted text and then highlight it "electronically" in the PDF.
The reason is that I need to print it out as I need multiple pages to lay next to each other and highlight the text with a marker. It is just more practicle for reading scientific publications.
Thank you

Other than scanning the pages in color after you highlight by hand,  I don't believe there is a way to automatically select text and highlight

  • Printing document with Notes/Comments and underlined/highlighted text

    Dear all,
I have been reading a document and highlighted & underlined parts of it.
In addition I also inserted notes.
Now when trying to print the document with the "summarize comments function" (I translate this from the
german version so there it might be called somewhat differently in english) in the print menue, I receive a the
original document plus attached several pages including my notes (now numbered) PLUS entries for every line I highlighted, underlined etc.
Evidently I only want the text of my comments, not empty entries for each line I have highlighted.
To be clear, I would like to keep the text highlighted / underlined - but I don't need the
entries for that in the appended section. A document of 18 pages otherwise suddently gets 48 pages...(with only
    a few added notes).
I have to say I am somewhat puzzled how difficult it is to sort this out. Thought that must be
something rather trival (or am I blind and make a silly mistake)?
To make it more clear here screenshot from what I refer to
    Many thanks for any help.

    Dear Lori,
many thanks for your swift response. Did I understand you correctly - there is no way to keep all the comments (underlined/highlighted/stick notes) in the text and only inlcude the content of the sticky notes at the end of the document? If I filter, as suggested by you, then the underlined/highlighted parts will not show up in the appended pages (that's good) - but they are also not longer visible in the main text (that's bad...).
I would have thought what I am trying is rather ordinary - Highlighting/underlining text and adding comments. And when I print the document, i would like to get the edited text plus the content of the comments (sticky notes). (And not an empty entry for all highlighted/underlined words). I am somewhat puzzled.
    Many thanks again.

  • I can no longer use CTRL C to copy text. I get the letter "c" and the highlighted text is deleted. How do I get the capability back?

The blue "Fn" plus any key will work. And, "Alt" plus works. But any shortcut that involves the "CTRL" key does not work. So I can't Copy, Delete, Paste, etc.

As you can see from a brand-new virgin install of Firefox, no addons, no pre-existing profile, version 29 DOES put the menu bar on the taskbar. And Firefox, configured as I have it, on a system configured with High-Contrast colors (black in my case) turned on, Firefox is unthemeable.
But never mind, I solver this one myself. I booted into XP and used an un-updated Firefox to find a new addon named "Classic Theme Restorer". That did the trick. Mark this one as solved. But....
I wish developers (not just Firefox) who wish to fancy up their user interfaces would think about how it would affect the visually impaired. We use computers too.

  • Highlighting Text In Pages 4 and 5: How To/Best Methods?

    Hello Fellow Macers:
I need advice on the best way to highlight text in Pages 4 and 5:
I use and prefer Pages 4.3. Yes, I have Pages 5.2, and I find that using it good for some things (dictating into a document), but not so good for others - highlighting text.
For example, I read tons of documents and like to make notes, comments and especially highlight text according to a color-code scheme that I have used for years.
For those who use Word, this process of highlighting text is pretty straight-forward:
You highlight your text and then simply click your highlight box on the Word toolbar (choose a default color, usually yellow) and you're done. If you need to use another color, just use the pull-down, as seen above. The drawback in Word - no Orange, or sectrum option.
But let's face it - Word as a program is just too much. As someone who has used every word processing program under the sun, I find Pages excellent. It does what I need.
However, I find highlighting text in Pages clumsy. Here's what I need to do to highlight text in Pages 4.3:
Go to your toolbar, and then choose a highlight/background color. It's more labor intensive then Word, above, but you do have the option of more colors.
Then there's this method, where basically you get to simply use yellow as your color:
IMHO both are clumsy methods compared to Word, but have become even more so in Pages 5.2....
Lots of clicks to achieve simple color highlights.
Am I missing something, or is there a simpler way, in either Pages 4 or Pages 5, to achieve the above results???
    Any suggestions appreciated!

    Dear VikingOSX:
As Ed MacMahon once said (before your time?) re Pages 5 Character Fill Color: "You are correct, sir!!"
The gear icon IS where the function that I'm talking about is located. Still, it's annoying.
    Q: Why?
A: Because from a work-flow perspective as someone who is highlighting it makes no sense. We in the Western world read and write from top to bottom, left to right. Making a mark on a doc should follow the same flow.
You should not have to keep looking over to the right side of the doc to find your function. Logically it should be at the top (e.g., toolbar), on the left, or perhaps some contextual pop-up option.
Furthermore, it's more "labor intensive" from this point of view: In Word, once you set the color (which, granted, you may need to change from time to time IF you, like me, use multiple colors as part of your highlighting workflow), you just click the box after highlighting the text - 1 click vs 2, and possibly 3.
The "richer color" part of my comment was just to note that a flaw, in my view, of Word's basic scheme is that:
    1) It lacks an Orange. And we've all used an Orange highlighter at somepoint, right? Or perhaps, you were like me in High School and threw them instead. But you get the point...and
    2) Having a wider pallatte available as an option - which you do in Apple's scheme - is nice. I use color coding/highlighting to make notes and save time. The colors tell me what's important, what's next important, key terms, etc. Also, for example, if I wanted to outline my highlighting notes, the color scheme (which has a heirarchy based on color, right?) allows me to do this quickly because it's already there.
As for the Dictation function working on Pages '09/4.3 - again, you are correct, sir! And that's great to know. I had tried to use it before when the new Pages 5 (hitting fn twice on Pages 4.3) but it didn't activate. I tried it after reading your response and Bingo! It's Alive! So thanks for that tip.
Your keyboard shortcut scheme is an interesting idea, and I may try it as an experiment. My intuition is that it will not work as straight-forwardly as Word's toolbar pull-down will, but I might be wrong. We'll see.
And yes, I do use Pages '09 (4.3) instead of Pages 5 for exactly this reason (see my discussion)
    Great reply! Thanks!

  • Export comments AND highlighted text?

I know there are several options for exporting comments associated with highlighted text in Adobe Acrobat Pro, but is there a way to export both the comment AND the highlighted text?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Any of the annotations on the Comment & Markup toolbar (including those not place with defaults but available via "More Tools") can be exported to a separate PDF file.
Use Summarize Comments or use Create PDF of Comments Summary.
In the options dialog that is presented, select 'Comments only'.
    Regarding character strings that have the Highlight annotation "laid" over them;
    Go into Acrobat's Preferences.
    Select the Category "Commenting".
Look over the configuration settings in the 'Pop-Up Open Behavior'
    and the 'Making Comments' panes.
Specifically, select "Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, and Underline comment pop-ups"
Cross-Out and Underline can be added to the Comment & Markup toolbar via the "More Tools" menu which is available on the default toolbar "ribbon" context menu.

  • BACKGROUND COLOUR AND HIGHLIGHT TEXT ISSUE

Hi, Just registered and I'm keen to ask you a pressing question. Setting background color different from white and adding highlight text causes the two colors to blend together i.e. the highlight color is not as vivid as applied over a white background or for instance as in a MS Word document. I'm expecting and appreciating your opinion.

Of course. Mix two colors and a new, different color comes to be.
Two primaries will yield a secondary (yellow + red = orange).
Optics, not the software application eh.
Try using a different highlight color with the designated background color.
Try using  different opacity values for the highlight color.
Try using different opacity values for the background color.
Review the theory and practice associated with the color wheel to identify the most harmonious (for you) colors.

  • Problem Highlighting Text in Acrobat 9 Std - Cursor-Highlight Mismatch

I scan and often highlight the pdf documents I scan. I use Acrobat 9 Standard with Windows XP. Sometimes after I convert the page from an image to text so I can highlight text, the actual highlight does not cover the text I mark with my cursor. It sometimes highlights text above or below where my cursor is and on one occasion it was putting the highlight way down at the bottom of the page. Does anyone know why this happens and how I fix it?

    Hi,
You might want to look at the "touch up reading order" in advanced, accessibility options. The document will be tagged and you will see the structure of the page. I suspect that it has formatted the text into columns - you can use this tool to clear the page structure and reformat to make the whole page just text reading from left to right.

  • Preview: highlight text slowly disappears over the days

    Hello everyone.
I have several days reading a book in pdf format with preview.app, and I highlight text in bright yellow.
I have reviewed all the highlighted text and the color yellow is more tenuous as I approach the beginning of the book.
In fact the highlight of the first page no longer exists.
How I can do to make all the highlight is of the same intensity of color?
I use Preview Versión 5.5 (719). Thank you.

Tonight I went to the Genius Bar. There seems to be two options:
    (1) Do as the genius did tonight:
    - Reset the home folder's ACL (Access Control List.)  (He said to Google this to learn exactly how to do this.)
    - Repair the disk permissions
    - Delete the Preview preference file. It's a "plist" file located in user/library/preferences
    If that doesn't work, then:
    (2) Re-install Lion.
I tried Preview with the fixes and most of my problems seemed to be fixed. Those being the colors of the highlighted text and notes haven't dimmed after a number of quits and restarts of Preview. However, the grey text that I originally included in my annotations became invisible again. They're still there, but you can't seem them. Although the text that I included using other colors (blue & red) continue to appear.
My feeling that this still might be an issue related to versions, but who knows.

  • Scanned and OCR'd PDF--OCR content is not indexed

I am setting up a new SharePoint 2013 install, and have put a handful files in a doc library to test search. The content has been indexed, and I can find the content inside many files and file types without issue--including "native" PDF files.
However, it doesn't seem to index the content of a scanned and OCR'd (text with image overlay) PDF. I have verified that the text is indeed in the OCR text by copying and pasting phrases, and I also confirmed that the crawl log shows the file as successfully
crawled. The filename is also indexed.
So... it would seem that the SharePoint 2013 indexer does not index the text in scanned and OCR'd PDF files. Am I missing something? Can anyone else confirm this behavior?
    Thanks!
    Ryan

    To clarify:
    - From what I've read, iFilters can still be installed, but as Mikael said, they can't override the built-in file format handlers in 2013. 2013 has a built-in handler for PDFs, whereas previous versions required a PDF iFilter for indexing PDFs that have
text content. If one could install the Adobe PDF iFilter in 2013 successfully, it would resolve the issue in this thread, but PDF iFilters don't work in 2013.
    - Aquaforest makes a product that OCRs PDF files. That takes an image-only PDF and makes the
file searchable, but it is not an indexer. Rather, it enables an index engine to make a big
collection of OCR'd PDF files searchable via a search engine.
    - The built-in PDF handler in 2013 does index native PDFs. It does
    not index OCR'd PDF files.
So, that's the issue for which I submitted the ticket to Microsoft. In our case, we don't need to OCR our PDF files--they are already OCR'd. But they don't show up in searches.
(Regarding Aquaforest... I've talked with someone there previously--for a non-SharePoint DMS--and they seem to make a cool product, but I don't have any personal experience using it.)

  • Regarding the "Highlight Text" feature

    Hello all!
For the last couple weeks, I have been trying to figure out how to search my OCR enabled pdfs for certain key words and then highlight each instance, and, either because I missed it or because I was using an out of date version of Reader, I wasn't able to do this using Adobe Reader.
Today I spent some time looking again and found the comments tool bar and the highlight text feature, but because of an asterisk next to them I couldn't bring them up, regardless of what kind of pdf it was.  I even tried making new pdfs with lower security settings to see if that did it but to no avail.
However, today while Reader did not alert me to anything when I first opened it this afternoon, after multiple openings and closings as well as it being open for extended periods of time, it eventually informed me an update was available.  I updated to XI just now, and to my SHEER JOY the highlight text feature is not only available but on my toolbar by default.
First of all, to any Adobe staff who reads this - THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS FEATURE AVAILABLE BY DEFAULT.  I've needed this for an important project at work for a while now.
Second, after receiving this new update I went on these forums, and it seems that this feature and this update have both been available for a while now, which is giving me a lot of questions:
1.) When was the reader XI update pushed out to users (in other words, when should I have been notified that an update was available)?
2.) Is the highlight text feature being available by default (and without asterisks or me giving myself migranes trying to change security settings) new with XI, or was it available in previous versions by default as well?
3.) Why was this feature previously unavailable by default and guarded by security permissions etc.?
4.) Why did this feature's availability change - what changed Adobe's minds?
These are mostly for curiosity, but also because I've spent the last two weeks recovering from a corrupt user profile on my laptop, and since I can't remember what version I was using before I updated to XI, so I'm also curious if I've been using an outdated version for a while now.
Anyway, any insight into my questions would be appreciated, but either way THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!

I didn't make myself clear I'm sorry. I don't want to highlight text when searching, I want to highlight text like you do in a textbook when you are studying, using a highlighter.

How can I highlight text in a document scanned in a pdf format?

If it wasn't OCRed in Acrobat then you can only use the non-text commenting tools, like the Square or Polygon. Press Ctrl+E to open the Properties bad and you could make it look like a text highlight annotation.

  • How do you highlight text in Pages for iPad? The document I want to create and highlight is a pages document

I am trying to create a document in Pages for iPad and want to highlight various bits of text but can not find a function in the inspector for this. Can anyone help, please?

    Hi stuartdj,
I'm not finding a way to highlight text as one can do with iBooks (hold and swipe for black text, background yellow for example).
One option is to actually color the text itself.
Select the text, then in Style tools, tap the Font name at the top which shows the Text Options sheet where there is a Color option.  Would changing the font color to Red, Green or Purple accomplish your goals?
If you do want black text on a colored background (highlighted) it would need to be text in a text box where you can change the fill (background) color.  Style, Style Options, Fill.  But this is not inline text and doesn't flow like just coloring the font itself.

  • Vim keeps freezing and I cannot highlight text with my mouse

title says it all.  Vim will freeze on me randomly.  I was having X issues earlier but stopped using the nvidia driver and that seemed to fix that, but now Vim freezes.  I'll be in Insert mode and it simply will not accept any of my keystrokes or attempts to esc to command mode.
Eventually it'll unfreeze and then process all the keys I pressed while it was frozen (about 1-2 minutes later).
The only thing going on in my .vimrc is a color scheme.  This happens in urxvt, in an ssh shell, and in screen.
And for some reason I can't used my mouse to highlight text in vim either in all the shells previously listed.

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.
