Screen Captures of Setup Assistant?

I'd like to document the Setup Assistant that runs after installing Mac OS X (or booting a brand new Mac for the first time). Specifically, I'd like to be able to take screen captures of the various dialog boxes that appear such as setting up the first user account or whether or not I'd like to try .Mac for 30 days or entering the registration information for the Mac.
I can't seem to find these images anywhere on the internet or in documentation that comes with the Mac, nor can I find a way to run the Setup Assistant as a windowed-application.
Any thoughts on how I can get these images????
Thank you,
Jon

If the built-in screen capture shortcut keys don't work, then you may be stuck doing something funky.
Two ideas:
- Use a digital camera to shoot take photos of the screen.
- I'm not sure precisely how to do this (i.e., exactly what cables and adapters you would need), but you should be able to take the video-out, and run it into the video-in on a Mac with a video capture card (or maybe a digicam or some other device), and capture the screen data that way.

  • Screen Capture Program

The MS problem recorder won't work since we need actual video not just stills. The other issue is the problem recorder is disabled through a GPO I believe in compliance with our HIPPA policies (hospital).

    Hello world!
I am looking for a light-weight screen capture program to assist in trouble-shooting. While there are tons of options out there I am trying to find one that allows me to set it to launch when a preset EXE starts and closes / renders the video once the EXE closes. The other thing is it needs to run as silently as possible. I am aware of VLC but their current solution crashes way too often and leaves corrupt MP4 files all over the place. I will also note that I have been given a decent budget to use of this project so if it is some what pricey that may be okay.

  • I can insert images in gmail. However, I cannot insert a screen capture on one computer when I can on another. So I think its the way I have Firefox setup...but I don't know how to change it.

In gmail I enabled insert images. I can now copy/paste an image....but not a screen capture. I'm using the same process to capture the screen shot and paste as I do in Word. It works on one computer...but not another.

Move the cursor to the very top of the screen, maybe push up a bit. The main menubar should then appear. All the way to the right should be a bright blue icon - click it, and the Safari window should revert to 'normal' size.
Pressing Command-Control-F should accomplish the same thing.
Once it is back to normal size, click and hold on the top portion of the Safari window and drag to left or right to place it where you want it to be. Once you leave it there, the next time you open Safari it should open its window in normal size at that place.
If you need to re-size the window a bit, you can click-and-hold on the bottom-right corner of the window and drag to resize it.

  • After SL Install - Added HP 5100 blank HP setup assistant screen

The install went fine. On reboot, the HP Setup assistant launches. The first page is a welcome. I click the next button and it instructs to select the HP device. Well, there are no devices listed.
How do I complete the setup and make the setup assistant go away on reboot.

Hmmm, the HP Setup Assistant is launching. Did you perhaps install the old HP software? Print driver support is already included In-OS. As for the easiest way to stop Setup Assistant from running, go into the System Preferences, open up accounts, and under your user select Login Items. Select the HP Setup Assistant and press the minus "-" button.
If its not there (which there is a good chance it won't be with the older LaserJet software, go to:
    /Library/Preferences/Hewlett-Packard Preferences/
    And delete the file com.hp.setupassistant.
Now don't re-install the old software and you should be good as gold.

  • How do I get a screen capture in Windows on MacBook?

I'm a new guy to Mac/Mountain Lion, but not to computers, so this question may be a bit dicey.
I have used Gadwin PrintScreen for years on Microsoft Machines. During Setup, I am allowed to use Ctrl+Printscreen but now I am using, only occasionally, Windows 7 x64 on a partition on my MacBook Pro/Retina. Considering that there is no Printscreen key on the keyboard, I can no longer use the configuration I am accustomed to in the Windows environment on my lovely, shiny Mac. Only combinations ofCtrl/Alt and F keys are allowed. I get "Can't use that key. Already assigned to, etc."
So then, my query is this, on the Windows side, what keyboard combo will allow me to get a full screen capture? I've tried everything and combed the Apple community to no avail. If there is no keyboard combination, what app can I use that will allow me to do so in a Windows environment on a MacBook Pro/Retina. Just a month old.
I know how to execute this on the Mountain Lion side, but that key combination doesn't cut it on the Windows side.
In closing, I hope the solution is an app download to allow me to choose a configuration.
    Thanks for reading,
    Kelly J.

Start > All Programs > Accesories > Snipping Tool > New > Full Screen Snip
Sorry I don't know of any key combinations that will do the same thing.

  • System will not boot - Arrives at 'Bluetooth Setup Assistant popup &

A Bluetooth Setup Assistant (BSA) pop-up arrived on my screen looking for bluetooth mouse (which I do not have). It is in front of the log-in screen (I can just see it behind the BSA pop-up). I cannot get rid of it. The keyboard and mouse will not work and i cannot reach any of the system tools as the system has not booted. I tried (a) shutting off & restarting. But it always arrives at this same screen. (b) safe mode start with same result. (c) Command Option PR start with same result. (d)Then put in installation disk to start from disk (Holding down 'C') with same result. Now my installation disk will not eject (holding down mouse button on startup). (e) Also tried startup with firmware (Command-Option-O-F) with same result.
Can anyone help get me round this original problem as well as finding a way of ejecting the installation disk?

Note: I assume in the following that your mouse & keyboard are standard USB wired devices -- if not, please say so. Also, if yours are not Apple branded devices, please mention that too.
It sounds like your keyboard & mouse are not being recognized as connected to your Mac so the OS is looking for Bluetooth devices as an alternate source of user input. If this is so, what may help is to unplug them & plug the keyboard into a USB port on your Mac (not on a USB hub attached to it) after restarting, when you see the BSA screen.
If this doesn't work, try unplugging all other USB devices & repeat the above. If that doesn't work, you may have a defective keyboard or mouse. Check for that by substitution.

  • Setup Assistant New Macbook Pro Transfer Problem

Hello, I am trying to transfer the contents of my old 2008 Macbook Pro to a new 2013 Macbook Pro Retina with Mavericks. I have updated all of the software on the old one and it is running Mavericks. I can either connect them directly through ethernet (Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter for new one), or over Wifi. I have tried both and neither seem to work. When I go through Setup Assisttant on the new one, it recognizes the computer name old the old one. The old computer also had an HDD and Solid Slate Drive installed, and I want to transfer the HDD only. When I go through Migration Assistant on the old one, it stays on the searching for other computers screen, not recognizing the new computer. If I click continue on the new one to transfer from the computer name, it stays on checking the computer while the other one keeps searching. What can I do to transfer the dtata and settings to my new computer? I have heard the best way is with the one shot at Setup Assistant at the beginning. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • 10.5.1 Update - Locked into Setup Assistant loop

I updated to 10.5.1 using Software Update. Everything went smoothly and I restarted my computer. But when my 20 inch iMac restarted the Setup Assistant came up and had me reenter all the info. After that was done it starts over from the beginning. The Setup Assistant just keeps looping and I can't escape it.

I had this exact problem and here is what you do.
Restart and hold shift as it's turning on. Keep holding until the spinning gear starts. It should take you to a log in screen, DO NOT LOG IN, press restart (if restart isn't there as an option press 'back' and then you will see a restart option) and then the computer will start the update.
I was stuck in this loop for a long frustrating time. But this solution definitely works. Good luck.
Edit: I also re-entered my information about 100 times, it doesn't over write anything and all your files and settings will still be there.

  • URGENT - Screen Capture Video Quality

    Hi,
I need to create a movie for a client that shows the computer system that was developed for them.  The system is a web application and is accessed using Internet Explorer.  I need to be able to put the movie onto a dvd for viewing at various client locations.
I created a number of screen capture videos using Snagit 9 showing the user experience in Internet Explorer.  I took these with my screen resolution at 1440x900 and, when I put them into my Premiere Elements project that is setup as a NTSC DV format, the video quality is unreadable.  I have tried to use several tools to compress the video to a size that is lower than the 720x480 resolution of my NTSC DV format Premiere project and the files themselves look great when I view them using Windows Media player.  However, when I add the files to Adobe Premiere they become extremely blurry regardless of whether I've scaled the video or not.  I have tried different aspect ratios in the Interpret Footage and have even removed the scale to frame option.
Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong or how I can fix this problem?  I need to have this video completed for tomorrow evening and am stuck with the illegible screen capture videos.  Please help.
    Thanks,
    Scot

Burn your project to DVD (or first to a folder then onto DVD) and see how it looks on a standalone DVD player. It may be a problem with your screen resolutions v native resolutions, or a lack of preview rendering (is there a red line above your timeline - if so press enter).
On top of this you have the absolute problem that your are asking PRE to reduce from a 1440 x 900 screen resolution to a 720x480 DVD format. How well it does this you'll really only see by burning a DVD - but if it doesn't look good enough  you might consider using a 800 x 600 screen resolution to record your screen captures and reduce the amount of downscaling PRE does.
Which Snagit Export format did you use to import to PRE? What other export formats are available?
    Cheers,
    Neale

  • Boot Up & Network Setup Assistant

After booting up my iMac, I always get the Network Setup Assistant dialogue box in centre of screen. Sure, i can close it down, but why does it come up in the first place?

Go to the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, click the Accounts icon and then click the Login Items tab. If Network Setup Assistant is in the list, remove it.

  • Using Setup Assistant to migrate a 10.4.11 server to a new SL server, and have login panel before hardly anything has happened

We have a 10.4.11 server, running on an antique 1.0GHz G4 Xserve.  We have purchased a mac mini server to replace it.  The Xserve only runs 3 services:  AFP, FTP and Open Directory (Master).  (We are considering reconfiguring the new server as an Open Directory replicate to another OD master on the network later.)
I've RAIDed the two disks on the mini and reinstalled the OS.  It restarted, went through the language setup, put in the serial number, etc., and got to the "Transfer the information from an existing server" choice.  At that point, went and made a SuperDuper dmg of the 10.4.11 on a firewire drive.  When that was done, moved the firewire drive to the mini server, it appeared in the box as a choice for migrating from, selected it, and hit "continue."  It went through a couple of automatic screens with progress bars -- but it only took maybe 3-5 minutes, and then the machine rebooted.  It took nowhere NEAR long enough to have copied the data over -- the clone took nearly 3 hours to create, and it's running through a firewire 400.
So now the machine is sitting there, with the login panel up.  The firewire drive with the Xserve's image on it is still plugged in, and the blue light on the front of the drive is flashing like crazy.  What the heck?  I can't imagine that I should be logging in to the new server if it is in the middle of transferring data over!  Is it copying data?  If yes, how am I going to know when it's done?  If not, what the heck is it doing and what do I have to do to get it to copy the data over?

Called Apple.  They said, "Oh, yeah, Setup Assistant doesn't actually work from 10.4 to 10.6"  (So WHY don't they fix it?  Why don't they take the manual off of the web site?)
Moved on to Plan B.  Hooked the firewire drive to a G5 mac.  Stuck the 10.5 server disk into the G5, and upgraded the firwire drive to 10.5 server.  Booted off of it, changed the IP address and name, upgraded to 10.5.8, tested that our applications all worked.  Then hooked the firewire drive back up to the mini, ran through the 10.6 server initialization, and at the end selected the firewire drive as the "source" for “Transfer the information from an existing server”.  It went through the same as it did when it was at 10.4 -- did a few quick things and then rebooted and none of the data had transferred.
Now we are at Plan C.  Booted the mini off of the server install disk, and tried to upgrade the firewire drive to 10.6.  Told us we can't because it needs to be GUID.  After saying a few appropriate obscenities, got another firewire drive, formatted it GUID and are now doing a copy from the upgraded-to-10.5 firewire drive to the formatted-GUID drive.
Plan D is to upgrade the new drive to 10.6 server, try to boot the mini off of it, and if it works, use DiskUtility to copy it to the mini's internal RAID.

  • Wireless Setup Assistant Not Working

I am not able to figure out out to 1) add a client using pin. Which computer generates the pin? The the host or the client? and 2) I am not able to a Windows client. The windows computer will connect the APE, but the APE will not capture the MAC address and add it.
Is there some step that I am missing?

I, too, am having some difficulty in getting the Wireless Setup Assistant to connect an iPaq 2495b to the network. I just get the spinning icon with no apparent action happening.
    Any thoughts?

  • Booting to Darwin/BSD, Setup Assistant Crashing

Last night I was simultaneosly updating OSX and my iPod using Software Update, when the screen dimmed and turned grey with the message stating that I needed to restart my computer by holding down the power button. Upon doing so the screen turned black instead of booting up normal and went into Darwin/BSD (console). From there i followed the instructions posted to boot in single user mode and read the log. there i was given the message
crashdump[409]: crash report written to: /Lib...
    /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents...
    /System/Library/CoreServices...
    crashdump[421]: Setup Assistant Crashed
Can anybody help? I can't get past the blue screen with the spinning wheel thing, it just keeps looping there.
    iMac 20in 2.1Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    hi there--
i would follow the instructions for a blue screen in this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464. make sure everything is unplugged from your computer. being able to do a safe boot or a boot to the install disk at this time would be extremely valuable. there are things you can do however from single user mode which will sometimes resolve the issue, like renaming the preferences folder or loginwindow.plist. also you might want to try booting to open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and typing the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. if none of these things work, you will probably have to archive and install your operating system. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120. it is not an uncommon thing to be done for booting to the darwin bsd screen. keep me posted as to whether or not you are making any progress. • Basic Snow Leopard install with special customization:  setup assistant infinite loop problem.

    Hi, all,
Based on this post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1395118?start=0&tstart=0, I'm assuming there's a problem with setup assistant running after a customization install reboot.  But I could be wrong.
    Here are the details:
    MacBook Pro
Clean OS X Snow Leopard install (I was "told" by IT I had to wipe the disk and re-install OS X after backing up personal files).
Installed extras I need/want (in particular, XCode, though I went ahead with the other optional software as well).
Installed the IT supplied "Supplemental CompanyName Installation Disc" (also referred to as "CompanyName Supplemental Installation Disc" ), which is supposed to create a customized, IT supported, setup.
When the supplemental install is done, the system is rebooted.
There is then a "Welcome" screen (starscape, with almost endless bombardment of the word welcome in various languages), finally followed by:
    a) select language; b) select keyboard; c) select timezone; d) Don't forget to register your Mac, with a "done" button.
Clicking the "done" button goes to a blank grey screen. and then loops back to redo the "Welcome/language/keyboard/done" sequence, ad nauseum (that is, infinitely repeated).
Per the above mentioned post, I have rebooted to the Install DVD and run disk utility, repairing permissions.  No difference on reboot.
Boot to safe mode goes to the same setup assistant sequence, not a login screen.
Another Mac user here suggested checking for /var/db/.applesetupdone, since missing it, or if it's correupt, could cause this problem.
So I booted to single user and checked for this file.  It is not there.  On the off chance the file is a simple flag and the content doesn't matter,
I did fsck/remount and touch /var/db/.applesetupdone but this did not change anything either.
Presumably, the file must be present and must contain some data.  If this is true, can it be created manually and put in place via single user mode?
Or are there other, better solutions someone could suggest?
    Many thanks.
    Bob

Ah, it seems I finally found something useful, at http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=84825
One of the responders supplied the content of their .applesetupdone file.
I was able to get this onto my Mac, in /var/db, as .applesetupdone (just to be safe, I linked that name to .AppleSetupDone, the name as mentioned on the above site).  Note that both names begin with a dot (hidden, in UNIX parlance).
On reboot I was presented with the CompanyName specific login screen.  It took a little bit more mucking around with passwords, but I was eventually able to login without any problem.
