Screen fault diagnosis

Greetings,
I've been lucky enough to pick up an old iMac 17" flat panel for free. The reason for it being free is that the screen doesn't work. I've read many of the posts here and I'm hoping that one of you lovely mac fans can help me with a diagnosis. This is what I've done thus far:
Reinstalled the OS - No Change
Reset the PMU - No Change
Reset the PRAM/NVRAM - No Change
Shined a torch on the screen - No faint images
Neck assembly doesn't cause screen flicker if I wiggle it about a bit
Plugged it into an external monitor - Works fine, but iMac still has a black screen
There is light coming from the screen, so it's not completely dead. If I adjust the brightness using the keyboard I can see the amount of light increase and decrease accordingly.
The only thing I haven't done is whip the base off and check the connection of the cables to the logic board.
There's my dilemma. Any advice would be much appreciated.

What basic troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?  When was the last time the phone was jailbroken?

  • Screen faults

    hi all,
I've noticed a couple, well three screen faults that are really starting to bug me on my iMac, and wondering how easy is it to get fixed?
As yet I don't have any snaps to show what I mean, but if you can imagine the top left and top right areas of the scree, there's what appears to be spotlights of light pointing down, and at the bottom centre, what can only be described as a "big dull area" it's really noticeable on light backgrounds, so word documents and bright photos really show this up.
I do have apple care so am wondering before I make a call to apple, how easy is this to be sorted and more importantly....can it be sorted?

It sounds as though the backlighting for the LCD is imperfect. This is a job for AppleCare.

I received an iphone5 last week when I turned it on the white areas on screen are yollowish not pure white do I aligible for replacement or what to do with this fault

    Hi Morgiesm,
The White Screen Fault Is actually Based on White Screen Of Death
The best thing to remove White Screen Fault (Of Dead) is to repair your Iphone 3Gs
Notes:if It is Jailbreak There is almost nothing you can do but you have about 10% Changes to repair it

  • Screen Problems - DIAGNOSIS how to's

Hey everyone, im having major issues with my screen,
    it doesn't turn on.
Also if I connect the external display, its also not displaying.
Is there anyway i can connect to another mac (which i have)
    to diagnose the problem ?
    mbp 15 pre 08

You could connect the two computers with a firewire cable and boot the problem mac in 'target' mode by holding down T when you boot. That would allow you to examine log files on the bad mac.
Are you getting anything on the screen at all?

here is the link to my problem, anyone know what could be wrong, only bought this on friday, raging at the moment! Took a screen shot but the fault does not appear on that??

Hard to tell what this is, but it still seems like a hardware problem to me. I still recommend taking it in to Apple--I don't think it's any thing that will fix itself. Like I said, you might be able to get a replacement machine. The sooner you go in, the better. If you delay too long, you would more likely be looking at sending it off for repair. In the US, if we buy from Apple and something is wrong, we can get a replacement during the first 2 weeks of ownership. After that, it goes off for repair. Not sure what the policy is where you are, but it's worth asking.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook (Dec 2009) A1342 screen fault - intermittent - possibly cable fault?

    Hi folks.
My son's December 2009 MacBook Model: A1342 has an intermittent, but repeatable fault with the screen. Depending where the screen is positioned, the laptop screen doesn't refresh or turns pale.
This suggests that there is a bad or broken connection between the screen and the video output on the mother board.
Any suggestions other than to return it to an authorised Apple repair facility?
    Many thanks.
    Charlie.

Thanks Mike. Looks like fun taking the screen apart to replace the offending cable!
Would you happen to know what the part number is for the display data cable?
    Many thanks.
    Charlie.

  • 5800 screen faults

    I currently have a 5800 xpress music
have had the same phone for just over a year with no faults so far (shocking, I know)
recently the screen has stopped working
there has been nothing to prompt this, i.e. I haven't dropped the phone or damaged it in any way
I can still receive calls but the whole screen is black, as if the phone has been locked or turned off
the vibrations, sound and lights on the buttons are still working
I tried turning the phone off and on again, taking the battery out, pressing random buttons, tapping the screen randomly...Unfortunately nothing has worked so far
has anyone else experienced this problem? Or does anyone have any ideas as to how I could go about fixing it?
    thanks x

Either the screen has failed or it's become disconnected internally.
To get it fixed you need to visit a nokia care point or call nokia care in your country.

  • Cinema display screen fault

My 24" Apple aluminium cinema display, is suffering from numerous horizontal white blocky type lines all over the screen. This has just appeared today and the unit is approx 6 years old. The programmes can just about still be seen in the background and all buttons on applications work.
I presume this is a monitor problem and not my G5? When it first happened, I went to system prefs>displays>and played around with the resolution settings which seemed to cure it, but soon as I put it to sleep and woke up the system, it re-occured.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi X423424X
I'm unsure where the video card is in the G5, could you tell me where to locate it? Thanks

  • DV 9080ea screen fault

My DV9088ea laptop boots up ok, when I log on to the desktop it seems ok , as soon as I try run an app or go on to the internet, the screen flashes black on and off and parts of it show garbage , if I boot up in safe mode it appears to run ok copy save data and get the internet, I have read that this could be a graphic chip problem ,but why would it run in safe mode, I've even tried lowering the resolution in normal mode and the screen starts flashing on and off as I'm trying to do it

I saw your post regarding the black screen flashing back and forth. This could be graphics issue and if so the reason it might work on Safe Mode is that is the operating system loads minimal drivers and software. You can confirm this is a graphics driver issue by connecting the laptop to an external monitor and if the same thing happens on the monitor then we know it is a driver issue. However, if it looks normal then it is something else software related. If you can let me know what operating system you are using I will be able to look into this further.

  • Nokia 6300 screen fault??

    Hi
I bought my Nokia 6300 from eBay and i believe it was shipped to me in the UK from Hong Kong...
It was working fine when I got it..
But about 2 weeks ago, when I was talking on the phone for about 30mins and then after I hung up the call, the screen just went blank and green lines started flickering on it. I then had to take the battery out and put it back in to get it working.
But it doesnt happen all the time, just sometimes when Im on the phone and I hang up, it goes blank...but Ive used it numerous times without it going blank aswell.
It was bought from eBay so doubt its got warranty, however there is a sticker on the back that says 'Nokia Care' and its got a code with it. But is that valid for Hong kong residents only?
Has anyone else had this problem? Any way to fix it??
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Nano screen faults and scratches

Sadly, because Apple has the dominant position in MP3 players, the wolves waiting to pounce at the slightest opportunity are slavering. It's a fact that the Nano is stunningly good looking and functional. I have one, I don't have a cracked screen but I do think scratches are a problem. I saw a black Nano with horrible scratching but the owner didn't seem to mind. One problem in the UK is that any form of protection, sleeve, case etc. has just not been available. I had to send to Canada for a product. I'm sure it was the same when the iPod and Mini were first introduced but the Nano seems somehow more vulnerable. I think the manufacturers of protection work very quickly but we want their products immediately, such are our expectations. Apart from the scratch protection, I am utterly delighted with the Nano. Oh, and Apple should make it clearer that Nano can be used, albeit more slowly, with USB 1.

The UK isn't that bad, although I'm getting frustrated that we're seeing positive messages on here about zCover and iCondoms, which don't seem to be available over here.
Any Brits who just got or are getting a nano should try eBay UK, where various sorts of skins/vinyls are available. I ordered one at the end of last month, and it was with me by the time nanos were in stock a week later.
This vinyl is not particularly nice (fiddly to apply; me and my boyfriend both tried, and couldn't get it to apply without noticeable bubbles on the screen area), but it works. I have kept the back bit, and am now using a silicone skin with clear polycarb screen protector. The screen protector was £2, and can easily be replaced when it scratches, as it will.
If they really can't wait (and can cope with having a pink armband), Dixons Group shops have got a pink armband sort-of-suede-y skin. It doesn't look nice, and I bet it's overpriced (at least £15-£20--can't check the price as Dixons online hasn't updated its page yet), but it's there. It looks as if the case is built into the armband, which would mean it's only suitable for anyone whose main/only use will be sports.
Also, HMV seem to have a surprisingly good selection of iPod accessories. I think they have the armband as well, and I'm expecting them to pick up a fair few accessories as they become available.
