Screen 'jumps' around then imac crashes

10 yr. old imac; OS 9.2; 320 RAM
Dosesn't seem to matter what program is running. The mac screen starts to 'jump' then the mac freexes. The screen continues to be instable. Only way to shut down is to turn off power. Power back on and disk repair kicks in. lately it happens shortly after the mac starts.
Thanks for your help!

When I had problems similar to yours I posted in the Apple Discussions iMac CRT forum and got a lot of good suggestions there.
My iMac monitor packed up on me and I hooked it up to another monitor. It is not a difficult procedure, but I can say that because I know an electrician who did it for me while I watched. You will need a VGA cable.
If you are not used to taking things apart and putting them back together, I would join a club and get chatting to people.
A separate monitor may not even solve your problem. I am not technically minded. I have read that a worn out battery can put you right up the creek. It is knowing where to begin. Not having a functioning CD-ROM drive is compounding your other problem.
When my iMac's CD-ROM drive packed up on me, I fitted a pre-used CD ROM drive to mine that I was lucky enough to find on ebay for very little money. Again, I feel you have to be someone who is used to taking things apart and putting them back together again to take it on. It is not a complex procedure but, like I said before, I can say that because I am lucky enough to know an electrician.
In summary, I would say your best option is to join a club. You can't beat having the thing in front of someone with the right tools and the desire to fix it who will go through all the right procedures sequentially. Alternatively, give the Apple Discussions iMac CRT forum a try.
Best Wishes

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? Any ideas whats wrong with my iMac and what the solution may be? Also gets very hot from time to time, particularly if I'm playing music/watching youtube/movies for extended periods. Mac is 3.5 years old, running OS X 10.6.8, processor 3.4 GHz i7 memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

  • Mouse & Screen Jump around at various times

If I left my mouse stand still the mouse cursor will jump around. Also, the screen will automatically switch screens moving to the left or to the right to a new screen or sit there half way. It's happening while typing this message. Also the mouse pad on the laptop is diabled at times.
Very frustrating as it is difficult to get work done with the mouse jumping around and screen moving in different directions.
Seems like the Lion Software is possessed

I have the same problem. Brand new imac and I'm new to Lion and hate it so far.  I'm trying to do painstaking graphics work and the window and/or cursor start leaping around.  And I can't figure out any cause. It often happens when I've leaned back to look at the graphic so I'm not touching anything.  Possession? Maybe. Faulty battery? No.
Sorry to hear that your cursor too has started "acting up." Commiserations. However, I'm glad to read that you've positively identified the fact that a faulty battery is not the culprit. Good on you! I can only reiterate that, when this exact same problem happened on my MacBook all those months ago, my battery replacement (free from Apple, because it was under warranty) stopped the problem.

  • Screen Jumping around

Got my ipad2 in November, all was fine, yesterday the screen started jumping around, going to different apps, pulling up screens.  I tried rebooting, turning it off, removing the cover.  After awhile it was fine, then today, the same thing again.  Help!!

I don't know if there will be anything that you can try that will solve this problem. There have been some other users that have talked about this phantom screen touching - where the iPad just seems to have a mind of it's own - and the only thing that I can remember from any follow up posts was that the iPads were replaced after showing the behavior to an Apple Store Genius.
You could try restoring the device, but I don't know if that will do any good at all.
iTunes: Backing up, updating and restoring iOS software
If you have done the hard reset - holding the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears - and you restore and the problem persists, you should probably book an appointment at an Apple Store and let one of the employees have a look at the device.

  • In Firefox browser only (NOT IE,) Yahoo Mail screen jumps up, then down 1 line every few seconds.

The following happens ONLY when I use Firefox.
It does NOT happen when I use IE; and it happens ONLY in Yahoo Mail.
Whenever I'm in Yahoo Mail, my screen jumps 1 line--alternating up, then down--every 5-15 seconds.
While composing e-mail, when I get ready to click on something or type something, the screen will jump up or down 1 line and cause me to click on something I don't want, or type something in the wrong place.
It's also extremely annoying to try to read mail.

Do you have the Yahoo! Toolbar?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    >In Firefox 4 Safe mode also disables plugins (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and hardware acceleration (Tools > Options > Advanced > General)

  • Why does my selection on the touch screen jump around?

Throughout the day my phone starts selecting the wrong item on my iphone; if I select contacts it brings up something else like email, if I select back it tries to delete, try to scroll up or down and it jumps around. I've restored my phone twice, restarted, updated it, made sure it's fully charged, and while there are times it works fine, it inevitably goes back to this problem. Sometimes if I lay it flat or turn it to landscape it will work ok, but more often than not, it doesn't.
I'm past my warranty and want to find a fix without buying a new phone. I need help!!!!

    Sync everything to the computer.
    Restore as new.  Test.
If problem persists, call Apple and arrange a repair.  I doubt if you'll need to.  It is most likely a software issue and the restore should fix it.  If it does turn out to be hardware, an out of warranty repair would be $199.  Not cheap, but cheaper than buying a new phone before being elligible to upgrade.

  • Apps open and screens jump around when tablet is ever so softly flexed/bent

    Hi,
I'm experiencing the above explained problem when the tablet is active and is softly bent or put to very soft torsion. It then starts to live its own life, activating the return button or opening the front page clock or Google now, etc...  It's seems unormal for the touch screen to be so over-sensitive to outside force on the construction.
Is anybody else experiencing the same problem?
Sony: Will the display over-senstivity to soft outside flexing of  the construction (without touching the screen) be dealt with in any coming firmware update?  My model is SGP311, version 4.1.2 and build no. 10.1.C.0.370 (Norway)

I see you have a bad case Faldo.. Sweden?
    I bought mine in Norway.
Jus for the fun of it I got a new one to test if I will have the same experience. And yes I have.
    Sony: It's identifying info is:
    Country: Norway
    Operator:NA
    IMEI/serial nr:430100350002588
    Build number:10.1.C.0.370
This tablet is the nicest out there in addition to its water and dust resistance, It's a shame that these minor issues destroy XTZ's chase for perfect.
I hope all of you in Sony are well informed of all issues, and that most of these will be sorted out through swift firmware updates.

  • Tried to delete an app and iPad froze. Screen jumped around. Could not pget it to shut down. Not just mine. Daughters did the same thing.

Tried to delete an app on iPad and it locks up everything. Screen jiggles. Can't shut off. Can't get the message to power off. Not just my iPad. Other family members have same trouble.

Then please accept my apologies. I truly am sorry. After reading tonefox's response, I had second thoughts. I had an entirely different suggestion posted but I edited it for that reason.
However, I do find it really odd that other family members are experincing the same thing unless.... Did you all download the same app and you are all now trying to delete it? It could be a corrupt app.
Please don't be offended by this either, I am just trying to help.... Did you all download something from an unsupported site or store? Or are your devices hacked?
DId you try resetting the devices by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen?

  • IPhone 4 screen jumps around when displaying images.

    Hi guys,
My iPhone 4 has randomly started behaving unusually when trying to display images. The problem is at it's worse when using the camera or trying to display photographs. The lighter the image, the worse the problem.
The display seems to shrink and stretch rapidly from the bottom of the display. I also begin to see what should be the top of the screen appearing at the bottom.
Any ideas what could cause it? The phone recently had a new screen fitted.
    Thanks in advance!
    Sean

In I tunes, when I try to move an IPAD AIR app from one screen to another, when I go to drag the APP the screens become moving targets and I cannot movve the app. Anybody know why? Is ther a setting somewhere? already tried making screens appear bigger and smaller,no help.  Was able to do it on older versions of system and ipads.

Both Memory Clean and Clean My Mac could have cause the damage which triggered the kp.
I would back up your Mac, erase and reinstall. Then Migrate your user data from the backup.
Uninstalling Tuxera is a troubleshooting process. You don't have to keep it uinstalled, just long enough to test to see if it is causing the problems.
However, if it doesn't happen regularly, it would be hard to determine if it was the cause.  And, as I mentioned, I don't think it would be the cause.

  • My iMac crashed once and so I held the on/off button and it was fine. It did it again while I wasn't around and my mum unplugged it from the socket.

So my iMac crashed - just left normally with safari while I was listening to music on Pandora and suddenly the screen became full of fray lines and nothing could be seen or done. I then had to force it off by turning it off from the on/off button at the back. I then turned the Mac back on and it was working like normal. I turned it off that night.
My mum then turned it on and was playing spider solitaire like she always have. The same thing then happened to (while I was not around). She does not know much about computers and she couldn't turn it off after a while so she decided to then turn it off by unplugging it from the powerpoint/wall socket. It then would not turn back on.
Whenever I try to turn it on I can hear the usual clicking sound of the CD/DVD side, but nothing happens, it's just a blank screen.
What should I do? I've had this iMac for about 2.5 years almost 3 years now and this only happened last night.
    Please help??

Ok so it turned back on, and after leaving it on for less than 30 minutes and was not running any applications and it suddenly turned to a black screen and when I touched the back of it, it was completely boiling. Could it be that something is wrong with the fanning system? If I have purchased this iMac for almost 3 years already. Would I still be able to bring it out to the apple store and have it looked at?
Would I have to pay anything to have it fixed by the apple store?

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Help with image jumping around the screen

I'm using a trial version of Elements 10 that I'm interested in buying it but 50% of the time when I click on an image so that I can click and drag it around the screen, it jumps off the screen.  I have been using Elements 6 and never had this problem and it is super frustrating.  I'm using a laptop and thought maybe it was my touchpad so i got a mouse and it is still doing the same thing.  Is there a way to fix this problem?  I will stick with Elements 6 if this can't be fixed as it takes me twice as long to edit images since the layers are jumping around and I keep have to kit the "undo" button.

The editor saved prefs often get corrupted. If resetting all tools doesn’t work you may need to rebuild the editor preferences to resolve any conflicts.
Hold down the Ctrl+Shift+Alt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. Release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Or hold down the keys whilst double clicking on PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
You should see a pop up box with the words: Delete Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File?
    Click on Yes
Close down Elements and re-open it in the normal way - then wait whilst it rebuilds the preferences.

  • Mouse pointer jumping around the screen

My mouse pointer has just started jumping around the screen. It vibrates and slowly moves down the screen even if I am not touching it. I have cleaned the sensor but that has not helped. I unplugged it and the pointer still jumped around.
Any ideas what might be causing this as I have not seen quite this problem on other discussions.

    HI,
That's interesting... restart your iMac. See if that makes a difference.
Also, do you have anything nearby that might cause interference, like a cell phone or graphics tablet?
May sound crazy, but dust and lint build up on a mouse pad can cause erratic cursor behavior.
You could try deleting this file.
    com.apple.driver.AppleHIDMouse.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your iMac.

  • Trackpad draging and jumping around the screen

trackpad works for a while but then the trackpad begins to drag (when I move my finger around the trackpad, the curser either doesent move at all or moves very slowly) and the curser begins to jump around the screen when the trackpad and computer isent being touched. I tried to connect a wireless mouse and it too bagan with the same problems. if anyone has any ideas of how to fix it, im all ears.

    Yes i've gotten this twice.
Once from not quite legitmate software.
Once from a sketch NSFK site.
Both times, it was easily resolved for me by shutting down.
Follow the procedure to reset SMC controller ( make sure you do this properly ) Guides are available on Apple's support page.
Immediatly after the SMC reset before any other reboot reset the PRAM several times.
    then reboot as normal.
...I'm not sure what exactly is going on.. I think some setting is getting adjusted and set EFI that's why normal reboots, safe mode, nothing else solves it.   One of the more eye opening aspect of it for me was when I rebooted my macbook into Windows7 via bootcamp and it still presisted.   At that point it had NOTHING to do w/ OS software, plist, safe mode or myraid of other suggestions you'll encounter.
