Script has slowed massively due to Snow Leopard

I am using AppleScript to retrieve jobs from our job server (afp mount). What used to take a couple seconds in Leopard now takes minutes (or times out completely)
Here is the portion of the code that has slowed to a crawl. (theYearFolder and theJobNumber is defined earlier in the script)
tell application "Finder"
with timeout of 777 seconds
try
*duplicate (every folder in theYearFolder whose name begins with thejobnumber) to the desktop*
on error the error_message
display dialog the error_message buttons {"Cancel"} default button 1 with icon caution
end try
end timeout
end tell
I am aware that there are some new changes in SL that cause certain operations to be duplicated if they are called inside a Finder tell block. As far as I can tell, that is not what is happening. Is there a known speed issue with the new Cocoa Finder + AppleScript? Or is there something I can change in my script that would speed up this operation?
PS …theYearFolder contains several hundred items.
Ideas?

Here's a basic script that should give you a start:
<pre style="margin:0px;padding:5px;border:2px dotted green;width:630px; height:auto;color:#ffffff;background-color:#000000;overflow-x:auto;overflow-y:h idden;font-family:Verdana, Monaco, monospace;font-weight:bold;font-size:12px;"
title="Copy this text and paste it into your Script Editor application.">set theYearFolder to choose folder
set theJobNumber to 2
do shell script "find " & ¬
quoted form of text 1 through -2 of POSIX path of theYearFolder & ¬
" -type d -name '" & theJobNumber & "*' -exec cp -R '{}' ~/Desktop \\;"</pre>
Of course you won't need the first couple lines of code, I just used those to write the script. Hope this helps...

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHA4DDEvZA
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Lower+Case+Replacement/537
If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

  • SLOW computer...due to Snow Leopard upgrade?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard on my iMac as it seemed I had to in order to keep my iCal syncing with my iPhone, Microsoft Exchange, etc. Now that I've upgraded, my computer is so stinking slow! Firefox and Safari are brutally slow and even iTunes and iPhoto struggle. I have to force quit all the time too. NEVER had any problems before I upgraded. Did I do something I shouldn't have? Is there something I'm missing?
Thanks in advance and please let me know if you need any more info to help solve my problem. It says I'm running 10.6.7 on my About This Mac with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM....let me know if you need more!
    THANKS!
    MP

I do remember something about Rosetta - (I installed SL myself) - is there something I need to check for that? Or uninstall?
I read the FAQ (wow...pops and buzzes...) and about the only thing that stands out to me is that I didn't disconnect my external hard drive before ugrading. Otherwise, I don't really understand much else - I'll have to reread it and concentrate a little more!
The only "stuff" I have added to the iMac is my external hard drive (OneTouch4), my printer (HP - it's newer), and copies of Apple's versions of Word/Power Point/Excel. I have an Airport too. Everything else came with the iMac. Nothing has changed other than the addition of Snow Leopard.
I am happy to read all the info you suggest and try things but if it's too complicated for a beginner, then I don't mind having the Apple Store do it. I just want my speed back!
Thanks so much for your patience with me!

  • Why has my iMac slowed after updating to snow leopard?

I'm not that great with the computer language so I need some 'for dummies' help.  I upgraded my iMac with the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and now it is slow as molasses.  I do have time machine hooked up to it but don't know how to use it.  I'm a retired stay at home mom (all the kids left the nest) so I have been learning things as I go but seem to be stuck in time with this one. I did read that people have uninstalled the program and reinstalled it a certain way, but that's where I get lost.  I don't know how to do that without getting nervous that I'm going to loose data. Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

OK, I think the problem is you don't have enough RAM. Even though you meet the minimum for Snow, which is 1GB, that's really bare bones. What happens when you don't have enough is paging occurs (Page outs in your screenshot.) Since there isn't enough physical RAM, the system starts writing the memory outside to the hard drive, and this is very inefficient and slow. If it keeps up, the computer will just eventually freeze.
Right now you have only 65MB free, and although you have more in "Inactive," which is supposed to be available on demand, it often doesn't work the way it should.
The temporary fix for that is to keep fewer applications open concurrently. The real fix is to install more RAM. If you're in the US or Canada, an excellent place to get reasonably priced, good Mac compatible RAM is from OWC, macsales.com. They also ship internationally, but don't know how costly that makes it.
I would install the maximum for your model. If you call OWC, they can walk you through this and there are videos on their site showing how.

  • Entering Time Machine - slow after update to Snow Leopard

Entering Time Machine via the icon in my top menu bar has never been fast. However, last week I moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard (since fully updated). Tonight I needed to restore a file from yesterday's backup, so I selected "Enter Time Machine." The "universe" with the timeline along the right loaded, but several minutes passed and I was still not able to use the arrows at the lower right to move backwards in time. Nor would the timeline at the right show any date markers other than "Now," "Today," and "January 2010" and "January 2009." I let it sit for several minutes with no apparent progress. Even the "cancel" button took nearly 60 seconds to function.
As an alternative, I tried running the Time Machine application from my apps folder. It was slower to bring up the "universe" but did, after a couple of minutes, get me to a window with a functional timeline.
Any idea what the problem might be? I feel like entry into my Time Capsule has gotten slower and slower, but tonight was really egregious.

It does take a while over a network; there's a lot of "setup" that seems to be required.
You might try the things in #E4 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Final Cut 7 running slow after upgrading to SNOW LEOPARD

I was happy how everything was working and just didn't install SL on my Mac Pro. The SL upgrade DVD was sitting on my desk for two months already and I was waiting for a good timing to install it [+didn't want to upgrade while I had ongoing projects+].
Few days ago, I finally upgraded to SL and was hoping for better performance... on a contrary ... FCP render takes 3 times more to finish, playback is jerky and feels like 15fps, the spinning wheel appears more often and sometimes selecting is impossible, I have to click on a canvas then try selecting again. I didn't try other Pro Apps yet so I am not sure if there will be any problems with Motion, Color or any other FCP App.
I'm working with Panasonic P2 HD material (DVCPRO HD 1080p25),
I have 350GB system drive and it has around 15% free disk space and
internal Striped RAID set 3TB [3x1TB HDD] 50% free disk space.
_I tried opening a new Admin user and Logged in from that user account but nothing changed._
Anyone experienced something like this? I'm trying to find a solution without having to go back to Leopard, so any TIP would help.
    Thank you in advance

I've heard, but can't verify, that FCS should be installed after Snow Leopard.
Before reverting your OS, try do a complete uninstall of FCS -
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcs_remover.htm
    then a re-install.

  • Wireless latency/slow ping problems in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (SR MBP), I've experienced unusually high and unpredictable latency from the airport connection. The Ethernet connection works fine (consistent and short ping times to the wireless router), but the airport connection's ping times vary wildly. My computer is within a few feet of the router and a computer running 10.5.8 further away has no such difficulty. See example: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot2009-09-05at101600AM .png
Running Ubuntu from a live CD, no such ping problem exists and the wireless connection works great, immediately out of the 'box': http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v404/amusiccale/Screenshot.png
Likewise, the problem does not appear from the Snow Leopard installation cd when I run network utility.
A different MBP (unibody) on Leopard does not have this problem with the same router (so it seems unlikely that the router is at fault), and I did not have this problem before my upgrading.
I have attempted deleting preference files for the wireless adapter without success. I have reinstalled snow leopard in place, making me wonder if the issue is the design/driver rather than an installation issue.
Programs I was able to use before in Leopard (such as Skype) that require a steady stream of information are now unusable.
How can I fix this issue?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

Hi, everyone - I have several Applescripts I'm running that mostly import Entourage emails into Filemaker Pro (retrieving data from forms submitted) - everything worked fine until I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently! The main differences that can cause a problem are scripting additions (64-bit vs 32-bit and security reasons) and the usage of dates (it is not as forgiving). AppleScript itself is basically the same, so if empty paragraphs are what caused your problems the update would have just been a coincidence.

  • SLOW Internet Connection on Snow Leopard

    Hi all,
I got a new iMac with Snow Leopard yesterday. All of a sudden, my internet connection speed is extremely low. I just checked the speed on my old MacBook, which still runs on Leopard, and using the same cable and connection point, it is about 1.4 mb/s. On the iMac, the connection speed is only 0.14 mb/s!
Do you have any idea how I can fix this problem? Is it something to do with my internet provider or Snow Leopard?
    Thanks very much.
    Jana

Here is a solution to having a sluggish internet experience that has worked for some.
    1. Go Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and move the folder to your desktop.
    2. Reboot
The folder moved should be recreated upon reboot. You may have to reconnect to your wireless network if applicable. And, you may need to go System Preferences > Sharing and re-enter your computer's name. Check what name is given in sharing before following my instructions. If problems develop, then your can move the original folder back, thus, overwriting anything recreated.

  • Quicken 2006/2007 crashing due to Snow Leopard? (crash report attached)

I have spent several hours with Quicken, on the phone, chatting and email instructions. Q2006 and 2007 crash when I try to print or export qif. This starting happening after I installed Snow Leopard. I have trashed plists, installed patches, updated to 2007, booted in safe mode, created new user/new admin, new files, etc. It always crashes. I have repaired permissions repeatedly, run Onyx, deleted caches, etc. I uninstalled silk and reinstalled Q2006.Their tech support insists that Snow Leopard is to blame. I reinstalled SL and Rosetta; nothing changed. It will let me download and enter transactions but sometimes it opens with data from 2007. Here is the crash report:

....indicates PPC code and Q'06 - Start by getting rid of all Q'06 stuf, perhaps. Then check for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible.

  • Slow to print after snow leopard upgrade

iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz with 4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM printing slowly to HP printer after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I have upgraded other iMacs and have not had any problems with printing. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It spools slowly. It took almost 20 minutes for a 3.5x2 business card in black ink to spool & print. This happens when printing from InDesign CS4 and Quark 7 to the HP 5200tn but not to our Canon iR 2550. She said it also can do this when making a pdf. Yesterday it ran smoothly in the morning but very badly in the afternoon. It actually asked her to put in a password to print to the HP yesterday. Very strange. Not sure what to make of it. Thanks for the help.

  • My iBook has OS 10.3.9; Snow leopard is not recognized when I try to upload???

I hadn't used my iBook for some time and when I attempted to sign-on to the network, I received a message that my OS needed to be upgraded.  I bought the Snow Leopard OS but it doesn't work.  Any suggestions???

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it? Some iBooks can't use 10.5, either.
Check out the requirements for 10.5 here:

  • Broadband speed has slowed massively

Hi I normally get very good speed from my broadband at least 8mb. However since Monday the speed has dropped to 0.2 mb. I have been on the phone to bt but they can't find anything without sending an engineer. I have signed up already for infinity which is being set up on the 7th January. I don't want to pay an engineer for the short space of time I will have to wait but is there anything I can do? My landline is working fine getting calls in and out. Apparently bt were running tests on their new infinity lines don't know if that has affected my broadband connection. I haven't asked my neighbours if there broadband is ok?

any thing regarding fibre will have no effects on standard broadband
