Scsi probe 4times..why?

Hi,
My .conf looks like this.....
name = "mydriver" class="scsi"
target=0 lun=0
target=15 lun=0
/*added my stuff here*/
blocks_per_bit=16
bm_shift=10
....etc
why add_drv or drv_config is calling my probe routine 4times for 15 targets? totally, it is calling my probe routine 60 times.
can any one help me in this ?
thanks
kiran

I don't have any fibrechannel devices on my laptop. But have you tried fibreconfig(8)?
fibreconfig -- Tool for configuring settings for Fibre Channel controllers and targets.
-r Dynamically updates system settings. Note: Cannot be used in
conjunction with -c option.
Maybe this willl do what you want?

One of the truely useful tools that went away with OS9 was SCSI Probe- a utility to rescan the SCSI bus and drop old devices and add new ones.
As we moved away from SCSI it was less of an issue, but now with Fibre Channel I would like to add and drop devices.
Has anyone found a way to update the FC devices?
    Thanks

  • Char _depends_on[]= "misc/scsi"

    Hi,
I am writing a driver which depends on scsi module to call scsi routines like scsi probe, scsi unprobe,etc..
I want to make my driver depend on "fs/ufs", so that i can freez and unfreez the file system.
Can any one tell me, how do i make my driver depend on more than one module?
And also, what is the difference between - depend on and include ?
    thanks
    kiran

    Alan,
I understood your point. It helped me a little bit.
What do you mean by at the time of booting?
if I say "_depends_on" misc/scsi, my driver will be linked to scsi module....likewise fs/ufs will make my driver to be linked to ufs module. Correct me if i am wrong. Now, i can use the routines like scsi_probe,scsi_unprobe,etc.. I don't have reboot right? your word during bootup has confused me.
Basically, in order to use some of the routines provided by scsi module, i am linking with it by specifying dependson. Am I right?
if this is the case, Why these routines are not provided as function prototypes in #include definitions? Is there a specific reason?
Anyway, you did help me to resolve my issue. Thanks a lot again.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:
I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually
installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:
I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD
Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!
The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier
    way than all this?
    TIA, Phil.

    I found this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2013/11/11/hyper-v-generation-2-virtual-machines-part-9.aspx
    I hope this help.
"...yes, we’re acutely aware that the generation 2 EFI boot loader messages persist on the screen and it can be a little confusing. Essentially what the generation 2 virtual machine did was:
Attempt to boot from the CD SCSI device containing the Windows 8 ISO. This is where the ‘Press any key…’ message came from. As no key was pressed, we went to the next boot entry. (And this is where we didn’t clear the message from the EFI CD boot loader)
I didn’t press F12 (in fact, this VM wasn’t connected to a network), so network boot failed
The SCSI VHDX is raw with no partitioning or file system, so this too failed
So why did the generation 1 virtual machine start setup from the Windows media? The answer is simply that it’s the way Windows media is built, and it’s inconsistent between the PCAT and EFI loaders.
However, it’s relatively simple to solve if you want to avoid the press any key message. In fact, we almost have all the pieces from previous parts. In particular, part 4 where we injected keyboard drivers into the Windows 8 media.
If you loopback mount Windows 8 or 8.1 RTM media, and navigate to the \efi\microsoft\boot directory, you will see there are two versions of cdboot.efi
The default version, cdboot.efi prompts for a keypress. The unused version, cdboot_noprompt.efi doesn’t prompt.
So it’s fairly simple to create modified media which uses the noprompt version. First, copy the contents of the ISO to a working directory, rename cdboot.efi to cdboot_prompt.efi, and rename cdboot_noprompt.efi to cdboot.efi.
Do the same with efisys.bin and efisys_prompt.bin
Then re-use our oscdimg command (in an elevated deployment and imaging tools environment) from part 4 to recreate the media.

  • What SCSI card do i need for new Mac Pro?

hello all, can anybody give me a straight answer on the cheapest SCSI card I can buy from UK, to fit in my Mac Pro. I have googled and searched the forums and am getting confused by talk of all the different types.
I have borrowed an old neg scanner, which is SCSI only. The guy gave me a SCSI card as well, but it came from a PC. I figured I would chuck it in the Mac and see if it recognized it. Cue epic fail, because it appears only to fit in "backwards". that is with the scsi port facing into the case.
No big deal I thought, I'll just buy one. I had no idea it would be so complicated.
Speed of connection is not an issue to me, I just want it to work!
    Please help, thanks in advance
    stu.

Hatter, thanks for the speedy reply. Can I only put in an expensive SCSI card? Why don't the cheapo 50 buck ones work? Sorry for being dense...
I hear your point about cheapo USB scanners, but the SCSI one i got was free! Just looking to archive my years of negs and want to keep the costs to a minimum. Will defo check out firewire adapters though. good call.

  • SCSI termination utility

Does anybody recall? It seems to me there was a utility program which would provide information on the monitor about the termination status of any attached SCSI devices, so one didn't have to visually inspect the device for its termination status. I thought I had the program, too, but not having had an occasion for years to need it, I don't know if I'm mistaken or if I just can't find the program I need. Thanks.

  • Seeking insights regarding connecting SCSI external drive to G4 with OS X

I have a couple of old external scsi hard drives from pre-OS X days which I need to get some old data from but am unable to access. I currently am running OS X 10.3.9 on a G4. (I also have an old Preforma 6300 and a Power Mac 9600 with OS 8.5 equipped with scsi cards but they will no longer mount the drives to the desk tops - I have tried reinstalling the FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit software ver 2.5 which I used originally to mount the drives but the old Macs keep freezing). The G4 does not have a scsi card installed and even if it did, I doubt I could find a driver for the mount software that would work with 10.3.9 (FWB does not appear to exist any longer). I saw a SCSI to USB converter (MICROTECH DB25 USB to SCSI CABLE CONVERTER)and wondered if that might work. Has anyone had any experience with this converter and do you know if it will work with OS X 10.3.9? Failing that, any other suggestions or guidance? TX!

Hi Tom. TX for the reply! The IDs are set correctly. Interestingly, on the units with OS 8.5 the system acknowledges that the drive is attached - When FWB Hard Disk Tool Kit is run, it checks the drive, reports no errors and identifies the partitions on the drive. However, when I try to mount it either the Hard Disk Tool Kit program freezes or the the computer freezes in general. I thought that possibly there was an extension conflicting with the mounting software so I tried rebooting with extensions off. This didn't work either.
I will try SCSI Probe as you suggested.
    Again, TX!

  • Adaptec SCSI card

I've had a back-up tape drive working (just fine) on a G4 400 running OS X 10.3.9 for a couple of years. I want to move this tape drive to a newer (old) computer, a G4 1.25 now running 10.4.11. I dug around and found the Adaptec driver I apparently installed to enable the SCSI card 2906 on the G4 400. On the newer computer with the newer OS, though, I'm getting kernel attacks.
I searched the Adaptec site for a newer driver, and there are none. In fact, they indicate "the version 1.1 driver is embedded in Mac OS X 10.2 and later, there is no need to download and install this driver if you are running Mac OS X 10.2 or later."
I guess my question is, does anyone know if this driver is still embedded in Mac OS 10.4? If so, do you know what it's called - where it's located, so I can make sure it's there. (I actually installed the driver I had from several years ago, so if it wasn't there, it should have been then, but I still had kernel attacks.) Any other ideas on this problem?
    Thanks.
    Ginny

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I'm totally flustered with this issue. Been working on it most of the day! According to what BDAqua found, I see that this card may not work with OS 10.4, but kind of hard to believe it wouldn't. (Hope that's just a post that was only current up through the 10.3 era.) The "Ask Adaptec" site Michael found does include 10.4.
I did find that 1.3 driver, and it is designed for Classic - not OS X (as is the SCSI probe). Fact is, this computer also runs an old (but still good) scanner booted in Classic mode, and everything is working great from that side. (Only use the scanner 4-5 times a year - hate to buy a new one when it still works.)
I do seem to have all the possible, appropriate extensions in OS X. In fact, I dumped all and reinstalled them through Pacifist. Still have the problem. This tape drive is accessed only through Retrospect, and I'm wondering if something in Retrospect is causing the problem instead of the SCSI connection, but I thought kernel panics were generally hardware related. When I access the drive in Retrospect (like to configure it), even if I don't "use" it, I get a kernel panic when I close Retrospect. If I try to restore a file, as it searches a tape, I get a kernel panic.
I examined the kernel panic log. Obviously, it doesn't mean much, but the text on every crash ends with:
    com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClienp
    or
    com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClient(1.4.9) . . . and some numbers/letters.
I also see "SCSI" in a couple of other places in the report, so I do believe it's a SCSI problem, but I'm baffled.
I might reinstall Retrospect and see if it helps, but I'm not optimistic that it will. Guess I might also try installing 10.3 in a partition that already exists on the drive, boot in 10.3 and see if the SCSI connection starts working. (If it would, guess I'd have to reformat the drive, reinstall everything and stop with the 10.3 install.)
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ginny

  • PPC 9600 SCSI Optical Drive/Software Issue

    Hi All
Powermac 9600 with Sonnet G3 processor, Sonnet ATA card and ATA/IDE hard drives, everything else pretty much as-built standard. Running OS9.1. All had been normal for quite a while.
But now the computer will not recognize the standard CD-ROM drive on either the internal or external SCSI bus. A ZIP drive runs on the internal SCSI bus with no problems. I did the PRAM Zap and the termination ritual dance to no avail.
SCSI Probe can see the optical drive but reports (with two different drives and on either bus)
    "Trying device x.3.0:
Failed: Driver installed but no drive entries
    Trying device x.3.1:
    Failed: Logical units not supported"
I take this to mean it is not a hardware issue. I replaced the Apple CD/DVD Driver Extension but that didn't solve the problem.
Is this a firmware or ROM or other issue? Whatever it is, how do I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Cookie

    Cookie,
The SCSI chain was a lot of power provided to a home computer.  It contributed to the higher cost of the computer.  It also added to the longevity of the hardware usefulness and ease of use.  It was decades before a PC could boot from an external device the way a Mac could in the '80s.
Here is what matters in SCSI.
    1.  It is not plug and play until configured.  Each device has to be configured to a specific address.  The benefit is the ability to have seven devices recognized at startup.
    2.  Termination.  The signal needs to know when to stop searching.  At startup, the host or computer will 'poll' the devices.  The first device that it sees with a system folder will allow the computer to boot up.  With 'Startup Disk' you can reassign that task to another system folder on another device.  The benefit?  You can easily repair one hard drive by booting from another drive.  Termination tells the host that all devices have been accounted for and it can now move on to the task of reading a drive.  Zapping the PRAM tells the host to start fresh and poll all devices.  It takes longer to startup but it creates new directories, or table of contents, so to speak.  Otherwise the computer may lose track of where to find a file.
    3.  The highest ID number just sets the priority or que during the device access.  The higher the ID #, the sooner it comes in the polling process.
If you want to optimize your SCSI devices, study the rules programmed into the protocol, otherwise, just enjoy the fact that a Mac will let you swap out drives and reconfigure without a lot of trouble.  A 'D' drive in a PC will not boot the computer, even if it is a carbon copy of the 'C' drive.  In fact, change the C drive to the D drive location in an older PC and the PC will not start.
The external SCSI port was the greatest hardware tool Apple ever offered to the government surplus shopper. We would buy Macs at government auctions and test them within minutes with an external zip drive or hard drive.  The PC guys would spend a day on each used PC because they had to find drivers for the video card, the network card, the hard drives, etc..  The SCSI chain was plug and play if we had our external drive set at ID 1 or our zip drive set at 5 because the internal drives were almost always still at the factory setting of 0.
Enjoy your mac and good luck with your optical drive.

  • SCSI CD oddities

I recently obtained a number of 40x SCSI CD-ROM drives and a few CD-RW drives as well. However, testing them has left me scratching my head. I initially tried hooking them up on a Beige G3, four at a time, using a few adapters, ribbon cable, terminator, etc, and a PSU. I know that all parts are good. ASP recognizes them fine and displays the proper information. However, they refused to mount anything. I think I got one or two CDs to mount sporadically with SCSI Probe, but that was it. I then hooked them up to an OEM Ultra2 SCSI card, which is also a good, working piece of hardware. Same thing. So I hooked them up to my Gigabit G4 with the same setup. Same thing. ASP in 10.4.9 even recognized some of the drives as supported for Apple CD burning, but will not mount any discs. The drives will spin up a little, then slow and do nothing, ejecting the disk when the button is pressed. Trying them one at a time produces the same results on both machines. I figured that since I've had some inexplicable quirkiness on Beiges, the G4 might be more reliable, but there's no difference. It may be that the drives are bad, but all 12 of them with the exact same issue? It doesn't seem to be a power issue, the chain is properly terminated and the drives are all recognized, but I get nothing. Sometimes ASP in OS 9 would recognize them as having media inserted (with the proper name), but it was unmounted, and SCSI Probe wouldn't always work to mount it. Disk Utility in OS X didn't see anything. Any ideas?

My only thought may be that the optics in the drives may be dirty.
You got a dozen - do you know where they came from? Gotta wonder about that.
My flying leap of an idea is if they were in a warehouse storage or some situation as such and there was a fire and lots of smoke (they'd be real cheap and whomever would want to move them), they may have been cleaned up so you'd never know, but on the inside they'd be filthy.
Get a lens cleaner and see what that does.
    Deb.

    A couple of newb questions:

2)do i need to setup scsi-emulation for all cd burning apps or are there any apps that will work without it?
    3) how do i setup scsi emulation?

well after you have all the .wavs setup in the directory you will be burning from that command should work except instead of "something" use the "*" wildcard. for example:
    cdrecord dev= "ATAPI:0,1,0" gracetime=2 fs=4096k driveropts=burnfree,noforcespeed -v -useinfo speed=52 -dao -eject -pad -audio /home/dk/music/*.wav
the * means, of course that anything that ends in .wav will be burned.

  • New hard disk not detected on openboot

    hello guys,
would like to request help if there are any settings i need to enable for a netra t1 to detect the new hard disks that were added on a dell disk array. the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11. have checked netra t1 manual and it says that it supports both narrow and wide scsi. probe scsi only shows the following disks:
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1

    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
the new disks are of the same model. any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11.
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590
    Target 1
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
This is an incomplete output of probe-scsi. Which of these disks are internal (maybe only ID 0?) ?
Set auto-boot? to FALSE at the ok-prompt. Temporarily insert one of the new disks in the slot of one of the detected disks (e.g. ID3). Is the disk now detected at the OBP ? If it is, there is something wrong with the external chassis.
I assumed that this is a Netra T1 AC200/DC200 with only a single channel SCSI controller.

  • ITunes connects, but neither Image Capture, nor Bridge Photo Downloader see iPhone

Hello. When I connect my iPhone (4, running 5.1.1) to my mac (10.8.1), iTunes starts syncing (so I see the connection works in principle), but neither Adobe Bridge CS5 Photo Downloader, nor Image Capture sees the Device. Bridge says: Source – Get Photos from <None Detected>. The <Refresh List> command brings no change. In Image Capture, both the Devices and the Shared menu item remain empty, the message its main window says: No camera or scanner connected. I guess that is no unknown problem, but I somehow can't find anything on it.
I'd be greatful for any idea.
