Sculpture/guitar

anyone know of a way to make sculpture work with an electric guitar? if so how.thanks

Actually, I never really used it. Just toying around... that's what happens when one has too many options. And - to be honest, I hate most of the old Emagic GUIs. Very nice to look at. Hard to get to grips with.

  • Problem with guitar and sculpture.

I´ve tried to sidechain my guitar throgh sculpture, but I dno´t get any sound then my normal guitar sound. Help please.

This topic comes up fairly frequently, and is most often a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about what it is you are trying to achieve.
Sending a sidechain signal into Sculture means that you can use the audio signal as a modulator in the synth - mostly to excite the string according to your audio souce.
It doesn't turn Sculture into a guitar-synth, for example.
To do this, you should set the output of the guitar track to "No Output", so it can't be heard through the mixer (do not simply mute the channel).
Now on the audio instrument that Sculture is on, select your guitar audio track as the sidechain signal, and select the external/sidechain input in one of the string modulators - you'll need to play with the exciter strength. Now as you play Sculture with MIDI notes, the guitar audio will be affecting Sculpture's string.

  • Is it possible to play Sculpture using my Roland GR-55 synth?

I'm connecting the CakeWalk UM-1G MIDI USB Interface to connect my Roland GR-55 Guitar Synth to Logic Pro 9.1.7 with the purpose of controlling or being able to access the sound capabilities of Sculpture and record them as audio tracks. Can anyone share their wisdom on how I might make this possible?

I guess you'd probably need to install a Mac OS driver from here -
    http://www.roland.co.uk/products/productdetails.aspx?p=1148#.T-2rhduF-IB
so you can select an input in Logic, other than that setup doesn't differ much from using a MDI keyboard. I don't know how well MIDI guitar controllers work these days - thay used to produce a lot of spurious notes, which had to be filtered out below a certain velocity or deleted after recording, but my one time experience was quite some time ago; you may get some more experienced user advice with a bit of luck, though the forum seems to be a bit sparse these days. A post on LogicProHelp might yield results also, if you need any more help.
And you'll need to record a MIDI track first, which can then be bounced, if you want an audio file.

  • Help with Sculpture

    Hi again!
I have just managed to get Logic working!
I now need some guidence regarding Sculpture.
I have my guitar coming out of Audio 1. Now i have set scuplture on Instrument 1. How do i use sculpture with my guitar? I do no tknow how to set sculputre so it effects my guitar. I can effect the sound from audio1. i.e distortions and delays, but not with sculputre.
Thanks for helping me last time aswell!
    Joe!

The sidechain affects Sculpture's oscillators and not the other way around. The sidechain will act as a disturber/exciter on the "string", affecting its characteristics. In order for this to happen, you need to be playing a sequence in Sculpture while feeding in an audio track in your sidechain. Make sure your disturber in Object 2 is set to external, while setting your sidechain to your audio track.

  • Sidechaining sculpture

i want know how can i use scuplture to sidechain onto an audio track, i have this guitar riff that is in audio track but i want to use the sounds and fx of sulpture to mimic the riff instead of the original recording, please help!
    thanks

The details of Sculpture's Sidechaining capabilities are prolly better describe in the manual but... you can set a track or bus to excite sculpture but it won't recreate/resynthesize/remodel a track. Make sense? In other words, you can modulate sclpture using this track but not resynthesize.

  • Sculpture automation & Controller assignment issues

    Hey guys,
I have an instance on Sculpture in a project i am working on. Everything is fine until the point where i try to manually write some automation in the arrange window. As soon as I select the parameter i want to change (LFO1 rate in this case) the sound of sculpture gets all weird and sounds nothing like the one before.
Is this some kind of bug? has anyone encountered this?
I also have another question and as im posting this anyway ill just put it here.
Im trying to set up a nanoKontrol2. Ctrl+k, created several modes (fader, es2, ultrabeat etc). I've assigned several buttons to switch between the modes but the assigned functions wont operate until i also choose that particular instrument in the arrange window.
Is there a way around this? i.e switch bet modes and actually affect that instrument without having to use a mouse to choose it?
Im also having problems with the fader mappings when trying to control volume levels of multi output instruments exs24, ultrabeat. When i move a fader of the overall instrument only the volume of one (unassigned) fader of lets say output 3-4 of that instrument will get affected. Im i doing something wrong?
    Cheers

I'm not sure if this will help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvBmsMB2XSQ&feature=PlayList&p=5B14BDD35A022ED3&i ndex=45
I spent a whole day following the above advice, assigning controls for my M-Audio keyrig 25 to 18 different logic native plugins (Channel EQ, Guitar Amp Pro, Tape Delay, etc etc). And then assigning'no-mode mode change' (if you follow me) to different letters on my 'caps lock keyboard'. This worked great yesterday. Now today it's all flaky: The caps lock keyboard doesn't change modes anymore, and only one of the assignment 'maps' seems to work. (Even making sure all target plug ins were on the same SELECTED track, and the plugin in question had 'focus' by clicking on it). Does anyone know if there's a known issue with controller assignment recall in Logic Pro (8)?

  • Sculpture Sidechain

Sorry if this has been asked before.
How do you use a sidechain to modulate the amplitude envelope? Can you modulate anything else with the sidechain and how?

Sending a sidechain signal into Sculture means that you can use the audio signal as a modulator in the synth - mostly to excite the string according to your audio souce.

  • Uograde to Logic Studio just for Sculpture?

I'm really happy with Logic Express, and have added a lot of multi sampled libraries for the EXS24. But
I do love physical modelling syntheszers because they can emulate acoustic plucked instruments really well, and I've heard that Sculpture is a physical modelling synth. But surprisingly there are no videos about this synth on youtube.
So, is it a good idea to upgrade to Logic Studio just to get Sculpture? If not, should I get Applied Acoustic Studio's (physical modelling synth)"String Studio VS-1, instead?

AAS String Studio is indeed a great Plug In but it sounds nothing like Sculpture and isn't as versatile. String Studio can create very special sounds as well as bread&butter stuff, the fretless basses sound great, the guitars not so much and you can get some incredible experimental sounds and pads out of it as well but it has more limited modulation and editing capabilities than Sculpture.
In Sculpture you can sidechain an Audio Input to trigger/disturb the string yielding to incredible results like rythmical textures (if you e.g. use a drumlooop/sequencer as sidechain Input) which you can't achieve with String Studio. Also you can record Midi controller data and turn that into a sequenced loop which is another fantastic feature of Sculpture. The characteristic of the plucked string can be anything between nylon, metal, glass or wood, abusing the parameters let's you create instruments you've never heard of. Also the morphing feature is great where you can dynamically morph between different aspects of a sound all synced to the clock of your DAW. The Jitter LFO´s are very useful too and the Modulation matrix as a whole is very well developed.
So I would say yes, upgrade to L8 (there are many other reasons for that by the way) and you'll be a happy musician/producer.

  • Track with Sculpture out of tune-sometimes

Basically, what's happening is that during playback the first 3 beats of the measure on the track Sculpture is on start out of tune. When I first open the song and hit the play button the instrument Sculpture plays back fine. Now lets say I want to edit something, freeze the track, whatever, after I've done it and hit play again sculpture plays the first 3/4 of the very first measure out of tune. The song starts at measure 1.5. If I cycle the region it plays back fine.....weird. There's no automation to Sculpture so I'm at a loss. Any ideas as to what might be happening?

Sculpture is not like other synths, period. One can't assume it obeys the laws of traditional subtractive or FM synthesis. The beast acts like a string. If the tension is slack, like putting a .07 string on the first string of a guitar, the note will be flat when struck and then become more in tune as is decays. Sculpture requires a lot of tweeking time to understand. The string tension, density and resolution are critical parameters. The higher or lower the note requires settings to couteract out of tune notes via these parameters. There are also "residual" effects that happen, perhaps even bugs. For instance, sometimes a reverb from the end of a track that had not finished it's tail before stopping, will be continued when the track is started from the beginning again. Sculpture has these residual effects but they can take different forms. Sculpture takes into account the vibrations of any note previous to a note played. That's to say if you play a note fresh with no note having been played before it, it will sound different if you played the same note and there had been a note played previous to it because it understands there are vibrations already happening which it encompasses into the new vibrations. So if there are vibrations still tailing off and you hit stop, those vibrations may act again at the beginning of the song and change the tuning of the first few notes. To make sure this doesn't happen, extend the song end and let any tails of synthesis or reverbs to complete before starting the song again. That being said, you will never get the same sound twice with Sculpture, it will play differently every time! It's almost human. Lovely synth, my friend.

It depends on what I am working on, and what works for my ear at a certain moment. The good news is, SCULPTURE is the best module when it comes to both flavors. Both emulations are crystal clear, and as close as it gets to reality. But!
When it comes to a track that requires an acoustic guitar, I don't fool myself, I call in a guitar player.

My line input is in capture via alsamixer, but still no luck. Any clue on this? I'm skipping steps?

  • How Rock Guitar Legend Slash Hopes to Hack Music Discovery Apps

Editor's Note: What do you guys think about the concept of apps helping artists with music discovery? Does it have legs? Is it monetizeable? Read and then let us know your thoughts on this thread.--ks

Glance at this year’s SXSW schedule and “Slashathon” might sound like an all-night 80s horror flick screening. In reality, the title is fairly literal: rock guitarist Slash is hosting an artist-focused hackathon on Wednesday with the hopes of drawing in crowds at the perfect mid-point between SXSW’s Interactive and Music sessions.
“It was an idea that came up when we were brainstorming the launch of our new record,” Slash, also uncommonly known as Saul Hudson, tells The Next Web in a phone interview. “I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who don’t have a platform to talk about new tech ideas for music, so we hope that the event helps inspire software developers to create something unique in the spur of the moment.”
Despite having been involved in several apps and video games, Slash says he’s not a particularly techie person, and is mostly interested in music recording apps that aid artists on the go. “I travel a lot, so tuner apps or things that enhance sound recordings are what I’m most interested in.”
A fan of Spotify and Pandora, the guitarist says music streaming apps are great for artists to both discover new music and share with fans, and he hopes to see more apps devoted to helping artists gain exposure.
“This is what people do now: they go to their computers and smartphones and find new music, shows, and artists,” Slash says. “Spotify and Pandora have definitely helped soften the blow on musical piracy… making records is a huge business now, and these apps help artists feel like they’re not doing it for nothing.”
While he doesn’t intend for the Slashathon to necessarily “solve” problems — as most startups tend to focus on — he would like to see music discovery become more catered to recording artists, not just consumers.
“I’d like to see the trend continue on apps that help artists get the word out about their new records and local shows,” he says.
It’s not surprising that a musician like Slash is keen on discovering new music. Thanks to Guitar Hero’s repopularization of “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” it’s hard to escape a dive bar or TV commercial without the familiar rock rhythms, even for Slash himself.
But of course, he’s grateful for the multi-generational love that’s passed along, decades after the song emerged.
“I was definitely more sick of it when we first wrote, recorded, and played it,” Slash says. “But over the years… it’s one of those things where you have to appreciate that a lot of people still like it.”
The SXSW Slashathon takes place at Capital Factory, and begins at 9 AM on March 12.

  • Play guitar on Tecra M9

    Hi,
I am trying to play my guitar through my Tecra M9, unfortunately I cannot hear the guitar through speakers or headphones.
I have also tried this using an external mic, as in karaoke type setup.  The mic works, I can hear it if I record, but there is no option in sound properties to add a mic to the playback and there doesnt seem to be an option in the HD Audio Manager.
I can do this with my HP, with no hassle whatsoever.
This seems to be an issue with a few other brands too, using the same sound card. I can find registry settings to add the MIC to playback for most other brands, but not for the Tecra M9. (I am comfortable editing the registry)
I understand they do this to remove the feedback problems, but if i were using an external mic, or guitar in this case, feedback wouldnt be an issue.
I was using xp 64-bit, but have since reinstalled vista, but this didnt resolve the problem.  I have also tried various drivers with no joy.
Any help would be much appreiated, not to keen to swap my nice tecra with the GF for my old HP.

I have a work around if anyone else has the same problem I did, Although I would still like a proper solution.
You can use NERO wave editor, if you have nero installe, there is an option in there to monitor input.
Also, you can use various guitar apps, I am using Native Intruments Guitar Rig.

  • How can I use my iRig plugin for guitar/keyboard in garageband 10.0.2??

    Hey,
I'm having A LOT of trouble with the newest version of garageband. I recently updated it so I now have version 10.0.2, starting of with a loooot of trouble getting it to finish downloading/installing. I kept saying that it couldn't finish because I had no internet connection, although I did. SO, now it's finally succesfully downloaded but I seem to have trouble getting my iRig connected - I've used it a lot in the old version of garageband, and never had any problems with it here. I have the iRig adapter with a 3,5 mm jack in one end (that goes into my Macbook computer) and in the other end i simply put in the cable and connect it with my guitar/keyboard. It does not seem to work though - does anyone have the same problems or can anyone tell me how to make it work? :-( I've tried to both make a "real sound track" and a "guitar track" but neither works..

    Please see http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/10g/clientsod_forms10g.html
while you MAY get it to work this is not certified or supported to run 1.1.8 Jinit.

  • Is it possible to use a cable with two headphone jacks on either end and an electric guitar adapter to record in Garageband?

    Hey everyone,
I got my Macbook Air (Mid 2013 model) last month and I want to record my acoustic-electric guitar on Garageband (which came with the Air).
I don't want to buy a guitar that has a USB. I have a cable with a 3.5 mm headphone jack on both ends like the one pictured here on this website http://www.bestdealaz.com/item.php?id=628 (i didn't buy it from this site though).
I connected a 6.3 mm guitar adapter (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/headphone-guitar-adapter) to this cable. Then I connected one end of the cable to my guitar and the other end to the Headphone/Microphone jack on the left side of the MBA.
I saw how other people were saying to go to System Preferences / Sound and then change audio output to audio input.
    I can't do that. I tried.
    Please help!
    Thank you.

    Hello Massimo Pascucci,
The issue that you are facing when creating an endpoint with internal loadbalancer is the limitation of not allowing same ports to be listening under a single cloud service. This reason for this is that there is a limitation of only one private IP (Also
known as the Internal load balanced IP) per cloud service.
There is also a limitation on the Internal load balancer more than one port to be published per load balancer:
