Search tab malfunction in RoboHelp 8 (WebHelp output)

I am trying to create a WebHelp output after importing a Word doc into RobobHelp HTML 8.  Once I generate WebHelp as the primary layout, the TOC and Index tabs work fine.  However, the Search tab isn't working: Regardless of the key word I use in my  search, the only result I get is a link to the imported doc (which imports as a single topic).  This isn't a helpful Search function at all.  What am I missing?
Thanks,
E. Johns

  • Robohelp 8 Webhelp Output cannot be viewed in IE 10

    Hi,
I have used Robohelp 8 to create help file. The webhelp output can be perfectly seen in IE 7 OR 8. However, in IE 10,  when the start page in the webhelp folder is cliked, the TOC is opening but the topics are not getting displayed in the right pane. When we click a topic from the TOC pane, no topic gets displayed. Please suggest a solution ASAP, as we have sent the help to a client. They are are facing an issue with the help. We have to fast fix this problem to avoid an escalation. Please respond with a fix to this problem. Please note we have used Robohelp 8 and viewing the webhelp output in IE 10.

  • Windows Properties; checking Search Tab to show in output

When I check the Search tab checkbox so the search tab will show in my chm output, it is not visible. Any idea why? Can someone help with this issue?

    Hi there
Sorry it seems confusing. As you may imagine, it's sometimes a bit on the difficult side to get into the mindset of someone unfamiliar when you have been using a product and technology for so long.
I'll try to help with the questions.
As for any need to have any file open when the report is generated, the answer is no. The diagnostics looks at the HTML Help compiler setup only. And in thinking about that, it may warrant a bit of explaining.
When you generate a CHM file, you actually work with a combination of products. RoboHelp for sure, but also the Microsoft HTML Help compiler. That's usually where the issue is when searching breaks. A component of something created and supplied by Microsoft breaks. That's what the MJ's Diags is supposed to do. You aren't expected to make any sense of the diagnostics. The process of running the diags also sometimes corrects the issue. That's why it's suggested.
As for uninstalling the HHW, I believe it's like any other Windows application. You go to where you would uninstall any other app in Windows and locate the HTML Help Worksop on the list and uninstall. Then you install the new version.
So give these steps a try and see if they help.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Search Tab in WebHelp Not Displaying Any Topics

Let me preface this thread by saying that I JUST figured out the answer to my own problem. I tried to post this thread about 2 hours ago, but the forum was having issues...I got unexpected errors, and such. Although I figured out the answer a moment ago, I wanted to post the thread anyway, in case others come across the same problem, they will know how to fix it.
The Search tab in WebHelp doesn't work. No matter what I do, no topics will display when I enter search terms that I *know* are in the Help system. I have another project on the same computer, and the Search tab in that project works fine. I tried to attach screenshots, but keep getting an "unexpected error," so I gave up. But basically, if I enter a search term and click Go, "No topics found" displays.
When the WebHelp is being generated for this project, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 0 sec(s)"
It looks like something that is needed in order to do the full-text-search is missing, but I have no idea what. I have read several threads in the forums regarding Search tab issues that others have had.
    I have:
        * Ensured that the itss.dll and itircl.dll are registered and in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Confirmed that I have keyhelp.ocx and hhctrl.ocx in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Used the same browser to view the WebHelp output for both projects (firefox 3.6.18)
        * Checked the project settings - they match
        * Checked everything in the WebHelp Settings window - General, Content Categories, Navigation, Search and Publish - everything matches in both projects
        * Tried creating a new webhelp layout, selecting a different skin...
    everything, to no avail.
When the WebHelp is being generated for the project where the Search tab works, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 115 sec(s)
I can't understand why the Search tab works in one project, but not the other project. See the diagnostic report below. According to the report, the only thing I don't have (and don't know how to get) is MS Help 2. But why would my search work in one project and not the other, despite not having MS Help 2? Both project have the same settings and I'm generating the same output - WebHelp. Any ideas why my Search tab works in one project, but not my other project?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

NOTE: In my original post, I forgot to include the diagnostic report that was produced by using the diagnostics tool mentioned in other threads where forum members were having problems with the Search tab, so here it is (just so that this thread is complete)...

  • Problem in viewing the webhelp output in a RoboHelp-DocumentX project

Hi, I am working with Robohelp X5. The project is generated together with DocumentX and hence contains more than 15,000 files. Secondly, the proper webhelp output is extremely essential for this project as it concerns the links which are also in thousands.
A problem has occured where the webhelp is getting generated, but I cannot view the output. The generated file occurs in the webhelp folder, but displays only a single page with no navigation pane or even the content/search tabs.
The project had been successful in April. While updating it, I copied the Robohelp project folder and things started. Initially the prosource folder was showing an error while opening the project. When I copied it again to a different location, the project file opened and functioned fine, but the output problem is still there.
What I have now id - The original folder with the crashed project, 2 new copies of  this folder where the project works fine and the webhelp is generated with no output.
Please help me, because starting from scratch with DocX files is a nightmare!

By DocumentX do you mean the Microsoft Word format .docx?
If so I am not surprised you have had trouble. Quite simply, X5 is not Word 2007 compatible.
I don't follow "hence contains more than 15,000 files". What's the connection with using Word that causes a high number of files that would not occur otherwise?
15,000 topics in one project is high anyway and at the level I would expect problems.
Are you using RoboHelp for Word or RoboHelp HTML?

  • Fix for WebHelp output issues with IE 11 breaks Search function

I use RoboHelp HTML 9 and have been having issues with generated WebHelp in IE 11. The TOC was totally blank and the Search tab looked fine but did not function. Everything worked fine in Firefox. After much experimenting and online research in these forums and elsewhere, I have been able to get the TOC to display properly in IE 11 (and Firefox) but the fix has caused the Search tab to stop functioning as per this other forum post RH9 Webhelp Search function is not working properly.
I need to have BOTH TOC and Search displayed and functioning properly but in order to get the TOC displayed properly I had to change the Preferred Format setting to "Pure HTML" and, according to the post mentioned above, that is what messes up the Search function. Is there a solution that will allow both TOC and Search to function properly?
Here is a summary of the steps I have taken to get to this point:
Tested WebHelp output from two different projects of my own as well as the Salesbuilder starter project - all would display/function properly in Firefox but not in IE 11 (blank TOC and non-functioning Search).
Found a "patch" for RH10 for the exact problem I was having with RH9 but was not able to find a version for RH9. Since the patch included 2 files (whutils.js and whver.js) only, I backed up these files in the RoboHTML\WebHelp5Ext\template_stock directory and replaced them with the new ones.
Regenerated one of my RoboHelp projects - still didn't work in IE 11 and now didn't work in Firefox either!
Tried turning on Mark of the Web but this did not help and would not allow opening PDF's which is necessary to one of the projects so I turned it off again.
Changed Preferred Format setting to "Pure HTML" instead of "DHTML" and the TOC displayed and functioned properly in IE 11 and Firefox! Hurray!!
Celebrated for 10 seconds until I clicked on Search tab and saw the input box filled with letters of the alphabet with other random letters, words, numbers below. It looks almost like an index but neither of my projects uses an index and I have not generated one in either project.
Found the post mentioned above which states that the solution is to change the Preferred Format setting back to DHTML but when I do that I am back to blank TOC and proper-looking but non-functioning Search!!!
I have now removed the Search tab from the output of one of the projects since it is not really necessary but I need to find a fix for this for my other project.
Both of my projects are run locally - one is release documentation that is distributed on a CD and the other is CSH which is loaded on the local server with the software for which it was created.
    Dorothy
Note to Administrators: Sorry, but I originally posted this as a reply to a previous post - Contents, Index, & Search do not display in generated help... - so perhaps it should be removed from that thread to avoid confusion.

The "preliminary" fix provided has worked perfectly! All versions of my WebHelp project now display TOC properly and I was able to change the Preferred Format setting back to DHTML so the Search tab both displays and functions as it should. I am very grateful to William for providing this fix which works in both IE 11 and Firefox. Someday I will pursue the fixes to make it work in Chrome as well.

  • Assistance with Search Feature used in WebHelp output

    Hi Friends,
I have a specific requirement. I am trying to copy and paste a few HTML files in the WebHelp output folder from an external source and display these topic in the final WebHelp output. I was successful in updating the TOC ; merged index entries and glosarry terms and definitions. The external topics appear in the WebHelp output. However, I am not able to understand how my topics can be included in the Search feature. As of now the Search option only searches for key words within the default project topics. How can I extend this search to HTML pages that I have manually copied within the WebHelp output folder?

    Welcome to our community
I'm more than a bit confused here. Why are you manually copying the pages? It seems that you don't mind the pages living amongst the other WebHelp pages. So why not simply copy them into the project? That way they would be included in the search.
If for some reason that's undesirable, you might look into configuring ZoomSearch. Look at the link below for that.

  • Robohelp 9 WebHelp - Searching doesn't produce any results.

Hi, I upgraded to RoboHelp 9 last week and now searching in Webhelp doesn't produce any results. I've created a new project, used the sample project, tried generating it to a new folder and results remain the same.
    When I select the search tab, the status bar flutters with the "Waiting for file...." displayed indefinetly with the occassion display of the javascript: (void);
Screens shots are from the RH 9 sample project. Results are the same with my projects.  CHMs generated work fine!
    Any suggestions?

    Mary
You added the problem to another thread that was not related as the issue there is the use of HTTPS. I have deleted that post.
You also started a second thread with a the same question. I don't understand how asking the question twice will help so I have locked that thread but created a link to this thread so that anyone with an answer can help you. If there is a reason for starting a second thread, please let me know.
Please just ask once and wait for a reply as this wastes moderator's time that is better used trying to answer questions.
Now to the problem. Searching with Chrome installed works just fine for most people so the problem seems to be local to you. If I have read you correctly, after installing Chrome, the search breaks no matter what browser is used.
Was that checked on other machines or just yours?
IGNORE THIS QUESTION - The answer is YES and that was in the post.
Did you also check that search was broken with the supplied sample projects? I know that works with the three browsers being discussed here?
Where was the help installed when tested by you both standalone and from the application?
Questions 2 and 3 are really only related to problems with Chrome. I have not seen anyone report Chrome also breaking the search in the other browsers. There's more to this than meets the eye as Chrome has not caused that problem for anyone else, or at least, no one has reported it.

  • Calling WebHelp with data transfer to search Tab

    Hi,
Is there a possibility to call WebHelp starting with the search window and transfering  data to the search tab??

Opening the search tab is possible using a CSH call:”
http://example.com/WebHelp/index.htm#<<cmd=>> pan=2 (See also my article on http://wvanweelden.eu/articles/part/regular-start-page)
Populating the search field is not possible out of the box. You must modify the search field script to do this. Check whform.js line 196 & 198 (RoboHelp 9).

  • Not able to view the webhelp output in Robohelp 9

    Hello,
I am in a project where we have to create webhelp output from Robohelp 9. Whenever I generate the webhelp ouput I am not able to view the the contents. Although, the webhelp is opening in a browser window but there are no topics present in the contents. The other ouputs like .chm and .dox are fine, but there is some problem with the webhelp which I am unable to figure out.

    What browser are you using?
If Chrome, try something else. Chrome works fine with help on the server but not locally. There is more in Snippets on my site about the Chrome issue.

  • RoboHelp X5 "no topics found" in "Search" tab

There has been one workstation used for RoboHelp HTML
development/compiling and has no issues. A second workstation was
built with the same application/version (RoboHelp X5.0.2). After
compling projects on this second workstation, when a .chm file is
opened and the users perform a search via the "search" tab there
are "no topics found". If the same project is complied on the
initial workstation, topics are found via the "search" tab. Anyone
have an idea on what is causing this problem on the newly built
    workstation?

Below is information from the workstation that does not seem
to be compiling correctly. I registered the .dll, but the "search"
still did not function (did a compile of the project need to occur
after the re-registration?). I will be getting the result from the
workstation that is compiling properly shortly and will post the
    result.

  • Problems generating WebHelp output using RoboHelp X5

    Hello,
I have been using RoboHelp X5, build 606 since last 2 weeks. I am facing problems with the generation of WebHelp output, when I generate and publish the project, it does not give me the Index and TOC. I have taken over the project from another author and when I compare the new Published Help folder with the previous author's work, I see some missing files. Could anyone from the group please help me resolve this issue?
    Thanks!

    Two possibilities from that information.
1] Is the D drive a partition on your hard disk or a network drive? RoboHelp projects must be run from your hard disk.
2] The more likely is that RH is not properly installed. When the previous author left, was RH uninstalled and reinstalled using your login? For X5 it must be installed using your login? Also you need local admin rights both to install and use it.
My guess is this is all to do with X5 not having been installed with your login and with you having local admin rights.
This will lead to another problem. X5 can no longer be activated. The solution to that is on my site. See Snippet 100.

  • RoboHelp 10 WebHelp search feature not working?

    Hi all,
I am using the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 4 and cannot get RoboHelp 10 to generate a WebHelp product with search capabilities.
I have created a RoboHelp 10 WebHelp project and imported FrameMaker 11 files.
Everything seems okay, but when I search in Internet Explorer 10, nothing happens.  I can even be on the same page as a term and enter the term in the box,
but then nothing happenns. I also tried:  Opera, Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers and still no results in the WebHelp search results.
Actually, I get one word by default and that word is:  "null".
Any idea on what is causing this?  I have a deliverable due soon, and I need to get this search capability working.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
I am using the latest patch too - RoboHelp 10.0.0.287
    Regards,
    Jim

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply.  I am not sure if it is Java, although I did download Java to make sure I had the latest update.  I am running on a Windows 7 64 Bit Dell Laptop with Adobe TCS 4.
I just saw a different post - but related to this post on the topic and I think it has to do something with the XML files that are created during the normal generation process.
I have a feeling that there is something wrong with my XML files and the reason I say that is because I can generate one of the sample RoboHelp projects to WebHelp and then use IE 10 to search and the results
come up right away, but when I do a WebHelp generate on my project the search does not work.
    Here is that related thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/798369
Search Error: Failed to initialize database
    Mar 1, 2011 12:33 PM
That thread dealt with RoboHelp 8 and I am using RoboHelp 10, but I think the problem is probably the same.
    My questions are as follows:
I have a customer deliverable on Monday with several hundred files and a search mechanism that does not work at all.  Can I copy the search mechanism from the sample project and then put it into my project?
Are the XML files generic or specific to each project?
How many XML, Javascript and other RoboHelp type files are used to make the search functionality work?  I was thinking of populating one of those sample files, that has already been started with my files to see if that would get things going in the right direction - with the idea of removing all the sample files from that project and replacing them with my files, but, I have over 400 files, including references to foldout drawings and vendor manuals (baggage files) and it would probably take too much time to make that happen.
With that said, if you or anyone else has ideas on how I could get this search engine working, I would really, really appreciate it.
My current file structure is like this:
    Main Project Folder
        !ScreenLayout
        My Project File1
        My Project File2
        My Project File3
        resource
        whdata
        whgdata
        whxdata
        Frnt_Cov.htm
        Frnt_Cov_csh.htm
        Frnt_Cov_rhc.htm
All RoboHelp graphics, javascripts and .htm files
There does NOT seem to these folders that are in the sample:
    !Language!
    !SkinSubFolder!
    !SSL!
The !ScreenLayout! folder is the only one present.  Does this have anything to do with only having MultiScreen HTML5 and WebHelp (Primary Layout) for my project settings?
Again the most notable difference I see, is between the folders NOT included in my project (!Language!, !SkinSubFolder! and !SSL!).  I am not sure why these folders are not included in WebHelp.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, as well as for any suggestions that can be offered.  I really need to get the search feature working by tomorrow.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • How do I remove just the TOC, or Just the Index, or both? I only want the Search tab to display.

We use the TCS suite to create multiple webhelp projects.  We're integrating a virtual assistant with our help, and I've been asked to remove the TOC tab from displaying.  The index, glossary, and search can remain.
I don't know how to accomplish this. I'm sort of a newbie.
And if there is a way to remove the TOC tab, is it an all or nothing deal? Can I remove it from appearing in some parts of the webhelp output but not all of them?
Thank you all for your help!

    Hi there
I hate to disagree, but I think Colum is leading you down a dark alley.
Unless I'm horribly mistaken, you accomplish this by adjusting a setting in your Single Source Layout recipe. I know you said you are using TCS, but you didn't say which version. So I'm going to assume version 9 here.
From the Single Source Layouts pod, double-click the WebHelp layout. Then click the Navigation section and clear the TOC check box to remove the TOC and the TOC button in the skin.
Click the image below for larger and clearer view.
Once you have done this, generate your WebHelp again.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Search not working in RoboHelp 9.0

I have been stuck with a very difficult problem. I had X5 in my local machine which was uninstalled to make way for RoboHelp 8.0. Later since my machine crashed, both RoboHelp 8 and 9 were installed. As a result of this there was a lot of conflict. So almost hurriedly, RoboHelp 8.0 was removed and RoboHelp 9 was retained back.
Now the problem is the WebHelps that are being generated has a problem with the Search functionality. On clicking the Search tab, the message that is being displayed is Error: Failed to initialise database. Please refer to the screen shot below for the incident.
I have lready tried deleting the .cpd file, then deleting the WebHelp and recompiling once again. But even that has failed to solve the problem. Moreover I have created a demo project from the scratch. Even that is throwing similar problems.
Now my question is is there any means to tackle this? If not can I get RevoUninstaller in my local machine and then get RoboHelp 9 unistalled. Thereafter if I install RoboHelp 8.0, will that pose any anomalies?

I think I would be inclined to use RevoUninstaller and remove any version of RoboHelp that is installed and then install 9.
