Second life for PowerMac G5

Apologies for my bad English as I'm not a native speaker ...
Just bought a second hand iMac i7 27"(late 2009).
Untill now I still use my trusted PowerMac G5 1.8 (2003) that works without any flaws.
Therefore I'd like to give my buddy a second life as :
1. 1 HDD as Time Machine for the iMac
2. 1 HDD as NAS (connected directly to my NETGEAR WNDR3800)
I've read some reviews in which they advise against this setup because of the power consumpion of the G5 ...
All configuration suggestions are welcome !
Greetz from Belgium

These are the specs of the G5
  Modelname:
Power Mac G5
  Modeltype:
PowerMac7,2
  Processorname:
PowerPC 970  (2.2)
  Processorspeed:
1.8 GHz
  Number of processors:
1
  L2-cache (per processor):
512 KB
  Memory installed:
8 GB
  Busspeed:
900 MHz
  Startup-ROM-version:
5.1.5f2
  Serial number (system):
YM********
HDD N° 1 : SAMSUNG HD103UJ:
                  Capacity:    931,51 GB
HDD N° 2 : WESTERN DIGITAL WD15EARS
                  Capacity:   1.5 TB
With these specs "Mac2Sell" - Belgium returns a current value of 300 € (about 366 $), so another option is selling my G5 and buying a new NAS ...
Greetz and thanks for your help !!

  • [GUIDE] Spring-Clean Your Inventory for a Happier Second Life!

So many people underestimate how important it is to keep your inventory lean and clean, ty Torley!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Elysian Fields Agency - offering the finest escorts in SL
    http://world.secondlife.com/place/c63a063e-bf1b-5e8b-50ad-913835278db2?lang=e

Spring is in full swing, and that goes hand-in-hand with spring cleaning — which includes your Second Life inventory! Wait, what's that? You dread opening up those dusty folders with hundreds, even thousands of items that you've never used. I bet that rings a bell.
Have no fear. While the psychological burden may initially seem like a mountain, taking small steps is the key. Cleaning your inventory isn't exciting compared to hanging out with friends in cool places, but each of these tips only takes minutes, and when combined, will help you feel sooo much better after decluttering! Plus, did you know a smaller inventory loads faster and uses less resources? It's not the same as going green in the physical world, but it helps. Let's get started with this video tutorial, then I've got written tips that expand on what I show, along with direct links to those sections of the video:
    Get Your Total Item Count
Shown in the video @ 0:42
For fun (or abject horror), start typing something — anything — in the Filter Inventory field. Your item count will rise above, until it's done loading. You can compare this to what it is when you're all done.
Don't be hard on yourself, though: this count includes Library items which you can hide, since they're not actually yours.
Make a "Temporary" Folder for Sorting
Shown in the video @ 1:18
Right-click the My Inventory folder and select New Folder. Name this folder "Temp", or if you want it to stand out, something loud like "~*~ TEMP ~*~". Drag items that you're not sure of into here, so you can sort them out. This prevents them from clogging up casual folder browsing.
You can extend this concept more specifically. For example, create a "Temp" folder in each main folder like Objects.
    Sort the "Temp" Folder
Shown in the video @ 2:21
Here's a basic process that I've refined over time:
Put on some mood music to get you in the zone. (I usually bliss out to ambient, but there was that one time I rocked out to Paramore in an aggro loop... yes, there's an emo Torley... sort of.)
Teleport to a clean surface, like a white skybox or a public sandbox. I have a flat platform which is set to Full Bright (neutral lighting), and makes it easiest to see what I'm placing.
Drag and drop objects from your "Temp" folder inworld, so they rez and you can see what they really are. This is useful if you have a lot of generically- or identically-named stuff (like lots of objects named "Object"). "No copy" objects are removed from your inventory after being rezzed, so take them back from inworld if you want to keep them. Otherwise, you can delete the inworld instance.
Move objects you want to keep to another folder. You may have an existing sorting scheme. I have "Archive" folders for objects dated by month, because I often have memories attached to objects of how I got 'em.
Depending on the land, you should either clean up after yourself or let auto-return take care of it. In the latter case, multiple objects returned to your inventory simultaneously appear in your Lost And Found folder as coalesced objects. Like the Trash, you can easily and permanently delete its contents by right-clicking it and selecting Empty Lost And Found.
Shown in the video @ 5:14
    Continue Onto Other Item Types
Objects are just one inventory item type; you surely have clothing, notecards, textures, and so on. For each item type, I like to go through them as a batch. These tricks make it easier:
For animations, gestures, notecards, scripts, sounds, and textures (including those in your Photo Album): hold Shift key while clicking to select a range of items, or hold Ctrl while clicking various un-adjacent items in a list, then right-click and select Open to open all those items in a single window. This makes it easier to browse each item and decide if you really want to keep it. Shown in the video @ 5:48
For clothes and other wearables, it can be a good idea to have a minimal, "neutral" avatar so you can easily see what's added upon wearing. While an ideal one isn't provided off the bat, I suggest making a nude/underwear outfit of your fave avatar. This also accurately reflects your bodily proportions, which matters because just like the physical world, wearables look awful at the wrong size.
If you want to save a texture to your local hard drive but no longer need it in your inventory: double-click the texture and click the Save As button, which saves it as a TGA file which can be opened or converted by an image editor like FastStone Viewer. (This only works if the texture is fully-permissive, like in-Viewer pics you take that end up in the Photo Album.)
Eliminate Useless Redundancy by Deleting Duplicates
Shown in the video @ 6:34
You don't need more than a single copy of an item in your inventory if it's copyable, so after you've checked goods out, select dupes and hit that Delete key. But before you do, be aware:
Items with the same name aren't necessarily the same. For example, if you work on an object inworld and take it back into your inventory, it keeps the same name. This is confusing if you also keep older versions of it. You can click the little gear icon at the bottom and choose Sort by Most Recent. Also, learn from many great content creators: append a version/revision number to the item name. I sometimes type the date in the name as a self-reminder.
Landmarks are one of the most notorious types of dupes. Here's why: many, many stores give a landmark in each product box. While this is initially useful to find your way back if you want to buy more, as shown in the video, the WORLD MAP dropdown shows landmarks from every folder in your inventory — and isn't smart enough to hide dupes. If you don't use that dropdown, this doesn't matter to you, but otherwise, you can filter (search) your inventory for those dupes by name, then delete them.
Furthermore, I don't keep many landmarks: since any landmark can be converted to a standard web link known as a SLurl, I save SLurls on the web instead, like in my Flickr exploration albums which have the advantage of loading quicker and giving me higher-resolution visuals.
Delete original boxes — MAYBE. There are two schools of thought: some Residents prefer to keep original boxes of copyable items because they're a backup if things go awry, while other Resis feel secure not having them around, after expanding the contents into a folder. My recommendation? It really does depend on the specific items. Boxes for non-copyable objects can probably be tossed away because they're just empty shells — unless you like the box design itself. Also, a growing number of merchants offer automated delivery if you lose something, so take that into consideration.
    Ye Olde Art of Cube-Stuffing
Shown in the video @ 8:00
If you've spent any amount of time with veteran Residents, you may have caught wind of "cube-stuffing" lore. Cube-stuffing is exactly what it sounds like: archiving a bunch of items in a cube and lowering your inventory item count. This works because object contents aren't tallied up in the total. You can cube-stuff items you want to backup and preserve items you seldom use, yet don't want to throw away.
Right-click and select Build on a parcel of land you have build permissions on. The build tools open.
Click the parcel to rez a cube.
In the build tools window, click the Content tab.
Drag inventory items you want to archive into the Contents folder pane. (Advanced usage: You can drag items directly onto the cube itself, but there's a subtle exception: Dragging a texture onto a prim applies it to a prim's face, unless you hold the Ctrl key while doing so.)
Once you've stuffed the cube, click the General tab to give it a meaningful name and date so you remember what's inside later.
    Limitations:
While there's not a strict upper limit for how much you stuff in a cube, note that loading the item list can be extremely slow once you get into the hundreds of items. Also, there are no sub-folders: dragging nested folders breaks their hierarchy, so cube-stuffing isn't that useful for original outfits.
Unfortunately, you can't search the contents of an object as you can with your inventory.
Some Residents keep stuffed cubes out on land where it won't be autoreturned, so they have backups in case of inventory loss — since the cube isn't in your inventory, it won't be affected. However, it will be affected by land changes, so be sure if you're going to do this, rez the cube somewhere stable.
This information is provided so you're aware of the possibilities. I don't really cube-stuff anymore and have grown more forgiving of letting my inventory count (it's at 13,362 right now) grow over the years, with the tradeoff that I'm more aggressive about deleting clutter. In first life, there was an insightful Lifehacker post on this titled "Rethink Your Stuff: What to Splurge On, What to Toss". While we avatars don't need beds and our shoes aren't going to wear out, sentimental stories attached to an object still matter to many of us!
    Remember to Empty the Trash!
Shown in the video @ 10:25
It's garbage day! After all the above, right-click your Trash "folder" and select Empty Trash. Then check your total item count and congratulate yourself — your future self will say thank-you too, when they find something you couldn't.
    Explore Resident-Created Inventory Organizers
While the above has mainly focused on trimming your existing inventory, this is closely related to ongoing organization. Searching the Second Life Marketplace yields dozens of "inventory organizer" matches that are designed to overcome system limitations, and further automate the above steps. For example, texture organizers can make it easier to browse through visual previews instead of muddling around in folders.
In case you're wondering, I don't currently use a specialized inventory organizer, but am discovering many cool tools as I rebuild Torley island.

  • Second Life failing in Boot Camp for Blackbook

    Hey everyone.
I've been scouring the forums looking for solutions to get Second Life running on my Blackbook (4 gig RAM, 2.2 Ghz, the damnable X3100 graphics chip).
So far, I've tried the .xml occlusion fix in Second Life, Windlight, and Secondlife (RC), and it fails every time.
Then, I tried installing a fresh copy of XP under Boot Camp. It won't even let me open SL or Windlight, saying I don't have the proper video drivers. This is weird, because everything I've seen on this forum suggests that the Windows version works fine for people.
I'm about to give the OpenGL MBP workaround a shot but I don't have much faith. Can anyone help me? I'd hate to have upgraded to a beautiful Blackbook only to find out SL doesn't run on it.
    Thanks.

Yes, I have. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be alot of activity, and there is nothing in those forums about Second Life.
Since the problems with running Second Life seem to be confined to the Macbooks as opposed to Boot Camp, the questions (and the answers) have been located more here. Hence me posting the thread in this forum.
    Thanks though

  • Quicktime Does Not Work On Second Life

    Hi There,
I am a Second life user. I love playing Second Life but there is one drawback. I can't watch Second Life TV.( You can watch Second Life TV at Rarity Design or RaMiRo Design if you play Second Life. Just use the search!) I am usually at Rarity Design but whenever I turn the TV on, I get a Quicktime 7 loading screen. I use Snow Leopard. I installed Quicktime 7, and I searched for updates, but no resolution. When I go to RaMiRo Design and try to watch TV, I get a plain blue screen. If anyone can help please let me know.
    Thanks

Found a solution thanks to Lead3 in the Windows forum, I was not downloading the latest version due to my browser or browser search. :OP

  • Flash 11.8 not working on Second life browsers

a couple days ago i got flash 11.8. I watch videos and movies all the time while i play second life...but since the update, i couldnt do anything anymore. All i get is a black screen, no picture just sound. as i recall someone else had this issue. i think the browsers are incompatible...i dont do windows, im on a macbook pro. the last version was compatible...but id rather have a new version that does work with second life, not just firefox, safari, and chrome. so is there a version i can get or a patch for active x on mac?

Have you tried the Adobe Flash Support Forums?

  • Image quality in second life

I'm running an nvidia geforce MX 4000 and up until recently the quality on Second Life was adequate, if laggy at times.  Then I had a hard disk crash, and had to reinstall everything from the ground up.
Now for some reason SL has a real problem with color depth, as though it's not really 32 bits (depth 24, whatever).  Everything is kind of washed-out and lacking details.
I have the proprietary nvidia driver and glxgears shows a whopping 814fps (much faster than it used to go, actually) and I have tweaked the SL display settings every way possible without any improvement.
Has anyone else experienced this, or have any suggestion on where I can look for the cause?  I don't really have any other GL-intensive programs to compare it against.  glxgears looks fine, but that doesn't have the high resolution detail of a typical SL scene, so I don't know if it's just the one program or the display on my end.

This is true for all versions of CR. The KB [1217914  - Poor image quality when viewing report in DHTML viewer through .NET application|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_erq/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333233313337333933313334%7D.do] also documents this behavior.

  • Question re MBP (dual GPUs) running Second Life

I have a question about running Second Life on a late-08 MBP 2.53 Ghz with the dual GPUs.
When I open SL (using the lower-end 9400 GPU) I get an error message saying there is an unknown graphics card and that SL will revert to its lower default settings.
When toggle the high-performance 9600 GPU and then logout/login, the error message goes away.
SL seems to run about the same in either case, which is about mid-range. It's OK but not terrific.
I am wondering if maybe SL does not recognize either GPU, even though the higher performance toggle does not trigger an error message.
Am I thinking right that while the mac is be using the high-end graphics card (or the low-end), but because SL does not recognize it, the SL client just uses default graphic settings and I am not getting the benefit of the nifty MBP double-GPU?
P.S. I have asked this question around the SL boards and to Linden Lab itself, but cannot seem to get a straightforward answer. So I just thought someone here might be having the same experience and may have some ideas about it. Thanks!

I did quite a bit of research the past couple days and would like to answer my own question, in case anybody else is wondering about this. It turns out that the error message only means that Second Life has not fully tested the new Mac Book Pro graphics cards (NVIDIA 9400M and 9600M GT). I received this info direct from Linden Labs after submitting a support ticket, and this was confirmed by the techs at the Apple store. Because these cards are not yet on the list of tested cards in SL System Requirements, the program opens with lower settings, but you can easily adjust them upwards once you log into SL. Btw, SL seems to run pretty well for me on the 2.58 Ghz late-08 MBP. Generally 30 fps in uncrowded areas with High or Ultra graphics, down to 10 fps with mid-range graphics settings in areas jammed with avatars, and even lower sometimes if you're dancing and there's lots of other avatars dancing too. You can get more details in my blog entry about this.

  • Leopard and Second life on MacBook Pro 2.0 with ATI X1600 card

    Hi,
I really want to get Leopard but am very hesitant given some of the reports and forums I have read about people having with SL in Leopard.
I have a 2.0 Macbook Pro with the X1600 Ati Radeon card and 1.5 Gig RAM.
Right now, SL runs perfectly in Tiger. I love it. Very smooth and fast.
However, I would like to upgrade to Leopard for some of the new features.
Has anybody had trouble running Second Life on a MacBook pro with the above specifications, with Leopard installed ? I am also concerned about Photoshop CS continuing to work but will make that another topic.
Please let know. I really don't want to get all the crashes and freezes some people have been talking about in Leopard with SL and don't want to have to run the different viewers to make it work.
    Thank you !

Since you use Aperture you must do a lot of photo work. Aperture really makes a lot of system demands so I suspect that you are spending a decent amount of time waiting. Aperture also likes a big screen and lots of RAM.
Hard drive size should not be that much of an issue. First, you should be moving those photos over to storage media for safe backup. (A smaller drive should make you more religious about doing this, right? LOL) Second, hard drives can be replaced with bigger and better models.
So, could you use an upgrade? Probably. But, the price seems a bit high at 1700. When buying used, the software included with the system means very little. Don't allow the price to rise because of it. Get some comps off of ebay for similar systems that have sold recently and negotiate. Don't be afraid to make a lower offer and walk away if the seller says no. You have a decent chance that you'll get a call a few days later agreeing to your reasonable offer.
PS: make sure that ATI Radeon card is a 256 and not a 128.

  • Can't play to Second Life with a Satellite l850 1rz

If anybody could help me I would be grateful... I tried to play Second Life with my new laptop Satellite L850 1rz and the viewer says that the drivers of the graphic card (AMD Radeon 7670M) are not installed properly, are out of date or the hardware it's incompatible (it shouldn't be by the requeriments).... I tried to install the newest drivers from the amd page but it don't let me... Could I fix it?? and (if yes) how??
(I still don't know if the graphic card will cause me more problems, I just recieved the laptop )

That doesn't appear to be a US model, and this is the forums for Toshiba USA. You may want to contact Toshiba in your region. If it's a European model, you could check the Toshiba Europe forums.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M in 2011 MBP-Graphics Issues-Second Life

Since there were no responses to my question, I have re-worded it.  Second Life runs fine on my late 2009 iMac i7 with it's ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. SL freezes at boot up on my new 2011 MBP with it's more powerful graphics card.  Message is that "Your system contains a graphics card that is unknown at this time.  This is often the case with hardware we haven't had a chance to test.  Second Life will most likely run properly but you may need to adjust  your graphics settings to something more appropriate..."  Nope...I have to Option Command, Esc to force quit.  Feedback on this minor issue appreciated.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
☞ Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Motion, Maya, StudioMax,Combustion,Crysis,Second Life, on the Macbook Pro?

I could not find info about Maya anywhere. So I am wondering if the new Macbook's can handle these big Programs? Second life is a huge problem, friends
complain all the time about freeze ups. I always work with desktops. But now I am more mobile than ever. I have seen friends with some of these working on a Macbookpro in windows not leopard, and also the new Dell xps m1530. I dislike Dell's support and lack of quality but at $1800 compared to $2400 for the Macbook pro? It begs a comparison for me, especially if the software support on the Macbook pro is not there. And if the 8600 gt.graphics really hold up.Big name gaming rigs are an option but that is why I have a desktop. Any feedback on the performance of the MacbookPro especially with Maya,StudioMax, is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Don't know how much you'll learn here. Most of the software you've mentioned comes from Autodesk, which isn't very clear on Leopard support. Maybe Autodesk's discussions forum would be more informative: http://discussion.autodesk.com/index.jspa
Still, stick around-there must be something on it...
PS: Second life system requirements are poor compared to an MBP. It should work well

  • Second Life messing up my MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I am not sure if I am dealing with a hardware or software issue here but I love Second Life and really want to be able to run it on my MacBook Pro.
I initially had no problems at all but in the last month, I have had numerous major crashes where the entire computer locks up. I have the Radeon X1600 Video card and 1.5. Gigs of RAM but despite this, I still seem to have to have all the video preferences turned down to almost nothing to run it.
And even then, I just keep crashing. Sometimes, while running SL on my external 19" monitor, the MacBook Pro screen will suddenly turn into a flashing strobe light or the background Mac image will become all jagged. Just last night, the external monitor on which I have the actual desktop (i.e. Dock, icons etc) looked like it was melting (all the icons were blurry and all the text on the screen was blurred. A restart reset it and it seemed okay until 10 minutes into SL again when both screens suddenly went black and I couldn't get them to come back on again so another hard restart.
I have read other people being able to run SL fine on the same model as mine.
I have tried clearing the cache, I have it set to just 200 in SL preferences.
I am running the latest SL version too.
Other weird things...while running SL in a window on my Mac desktop (on external monitor) :
    1) the MacBook Pro screen is suddenly completely covered in equal green and black vertical lines or just white and black vertical lines.
    2) Strobe light effect - strong, regular bright flashing on the MacBook Pro screen
    3) Normally smooth background lines on MacBook Pro screen are jagged and pulsating like crazy.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I love SL and just pray that I can run it again on my MacBook Pro !!
    Jessica

    Jessica,
I have the same problem with Second Life completely locking up my whole computer and forcing me to do a hard restart. I am not a tech guy, but I have been doing my best to get answers. There is a small thread here (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1978?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system .issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#action_32598) which discusses the issue. According to these posts, it has something to do with a driver for the new graphics cards being defective in some way.
What I find so frustrating is finding answers from people who actually have authority to speak (an official Apple rep or Linden Lab rep or both) saying "We are aware and will have an update soon." If such an acknowledgment is out there, please please post it here!
Is Apple just rushing new models out so fast they aren't developing them properly? I don't know how all this works, but if MacBook Pro's crash when people play games like World of Warcraft and Second Life, I think Apple has a problem.
Thanks in advance for any and all updates and information.
