Secure install or encryption possible?

I moved into an apartment and my super is a retired IT guy. I'm away a few weeks a month travelling, and I need my computer on for remote access. Is it possible to have encryption on a Mac mini? And disable the boot-up command that lets anyone reset the password etc? I know Ubuntu has an encrypted install option, but I much prefer Leopard.
Thanks.

you can turn on filevault on you account. this will put your account home directory in an encrypted sparse bundle. the rest of the data on the computer will not be encrypted but there is usually nothing sensitive there unless you keep some stuff outside your home directory. nobody can break into a filevaulted home directory without knowing the current user account password or the current master filevault password.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8727.html
also, you can turn off automatic login and set a firmware password on the computer.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
a firmware password will prevent booting from the DVD or in single user mode so it won't be easy to change an admin password.
a firmware password can be circumvented but that requires opening up the computer and changing RAM configuration. a casual snooper will likely not go that far.

  • I have a 2007 MacBook and I want to install the latest possible version of OS X. What version is that?

Like I said, I have a mid-2007 MacBook (note that it is NOT a MacBook Pro) and I want to install the latest possible version of OS X on it. I would like to know what the latest version that it can handle is. I know that the latest version of OS X is Mavericks, but I'm pretty sure that won't work on it, so will Lion or Snow Leopard?

i need to access a government website that requires 128-bit secure sockets layer encryption in my browser. Does firefox 3.6.3 have that feature?

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

  • WS-Security - Single element encryption ?

    Hi Guys,
The credit card data is sensitive and we have messages going through XI which has CVV code the 3 digit code and since XI logs this, we are planning to use single element encryption (XML encryption) in the web service security.
Customer asked that we can disable the logging only for this particular field, which is not possible in XI and thats the reason we are thinking to go for single element encryption. we have configured soap adapters on both the sender and receiver side.
any suggestions how to acheive this or any different ideas would be really appreciated
    Thanks,
    Srini

    Hi Srinivas,
You can go for SOAP adapter for your requirement.
To add......if u wantt to check out the details of SOAP adapter.......
SOAP Adapter: SOAP Adapter converts the SOAP messages into SAP XI message format that is SOAP with header attachments. This in an area many needs to really concentrate as it is heart of the ESA literature going forward.

  • SSL secured listener with Netweaver possible

Is it possible to use a ssl-secured listener (protocol=tcps) together with sap netweaver (abap and/or java)?
Is there significant loss of i/o throughput to be expected?
A notes search for SSL or TCPS on BC-DB-ORA did not show results.

I believe it should be possible to use ssl connection. Never tried it, but I think it should work since it is a matter between Oracle Client and listener and has nothing to do with SAP application server.
If you security requirements are such that you must encrypt traffic, and if you do not want to mess with tnsnames.ora, wallet and stuff then you might consider using some generic tunneling techniques.
And it definitely will have some performance impact.
    ... just my two cents.

  • Satellite Pro A200: XP + Vista installed/dual boot possible?

    Hi,
I am not sure if I am right here at XP OS but I post it as it is OS related.
My Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE7) runs smoothly with XP but I want to create a sandbox (partition) for/with Vista.
Basically I know that it is possible to run XP and Vista on one system. *But*, Satellite Pro A200 notebooks are shipped with a BIOS for XP and one for Vista and with information that you have to install the correct one. For me this means that you have to install BIOS for XP when running XP and BIOS for Vista when running Vista.
    Question:
Is it possible to install Vista on a Satellite Pro A200 with XP as main OS and having so XP BIOS installed?
Boot loader would be Acronis OSS as this loader already manage my two XP partitions.
    Many thanks for any information!
    Best regards,
    Andreas

    Hi
In my opinion there are no serious reasons why you shouldnt be able to use Xp and Vista on your Satellite Pro A200.
Ok there are different BIOS for Vista 64bit, 32bit and Win XP but your Vista should run also using the BIOS for Win XP.
Ive got other Satellite notebook series and Im able to use XP and Vista at the same time. I mean Ive got a choice to boot either the XP or Vista ;) and Im still using the old BIOS version.
Ok some functions are not available like FN keys but this is not very important for me.
Well, to cut this story I think you can use Vista and XP without changing the BIOS ;)

  • Multiple ASM instances using single cluster install - Is it possible??

    Hi,
I have 2 node RAC cluster installed on Linux. All the storage is on EMC. I need to setup another environment using HP storage on the same hosts. Is it possible to created second ASM instance using the same cluster install?? I wanted to have clear separation b/w EMC and HP environments and that's wondering if it's feasible to do that.
Haven't tried it yet to see if it complains.
    Thx
    Anitha

    Anitha,
The data migration won't happen (at least not aggressively) until you do step 2 in your list where you remove the EMC disks. That removal operation will take a long time as Oracle will have to move the data before it can complete the operation. If you want to be sure, I'd recommend creating a new disk group with one of your new disks, put a small tablespace in it, create some data in it, then add a disk to that new group and remove the original disk. Then you'll have some confidence in the procedure and verify that it works without risking your production data. After you test, you can drop the disk group and use the disks for their intended purposes.
To answer your question, yes, that's the process exactly as I suggested it above. Should work fine--but will probably take a while to do the remove, so be prepared to leave that running for quite a while (i.e. don't expect to close the terminal and go home right after running the remove).

  • Decrypt HP Client Security / HP Drive Encryption - or clone encrypted drive...

Hi, I'm trying to clone my boot drive over to an SSD.  I have a 1tb boot drive and I just purchased a 512mb SSD (MSata Interface in Sata to MSata adapter in bay 2). I get an error in Acronis Clone Disk and I assume it is due to my boot drive and my 3rd drive (a 1tb Hybrid in an Optical to SATA adapter) both being encrypted with HP Client Security, so I tried unchecking the drives in HP Drive Encryption assumign that is the way to decrypt the drive so that I can clone it, resize partition and reencrypt.  If I can skip the decrypt/reencrypt please let me know. Client Security gives me this when I unselect the drives in Drive Encryption:

Thanks Scott.  We can go as high as we need to clear the fresnel zone.  There is nothing but an empty parking lot in between the 2 building and about 1500 - 2000 feet of space but I have not done a site survey to see about the 2.4Ghz.  I think we are going to need different antennae as well correct?  I think the internal ones only go about 626 feet or so.  I was thinking about using AIR-ANT3338. your thoughts.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Using archboot-2011-10/aif to install an encrypted btrfs system?

Has anyone managed to install a btrfs encrypted system using the latest archboot image? Could we try and make a new entry in the wiki regarding these steps, or if anyone did it using the AIF? I have a 500GB disk and I'm wondering what would be the best layout for my laptop?

AFAIK, there is no fsck tool for btrfs yet. It's apparently on the way. I found out the hard way last summer when my computer froze and required a hard reboot. Trashed the filesystem. It was fast though.

  • Shared services security- Is this even possible?

I want to know if the following is possible using shared services security:
I want to set up an MSAD group that will have say 50 sub groups.
I will define this super group as an external directory in SS.
I will then assign security (both roles and filters) to each of the 50 sub groups.
There will be no groups or users in the native directory.
Based on user needs, the MSAD team will move users from one subgroup to another without logging into Shared Services.
My expectation is when they move the users from one subgroup to another, the user will have the security of the group they were moved to.
Is it possible to set up security this way in shared services? I have been experimenting and having a miserable time getting it to work. So just wanted to know if I am doing something wrong or just wasting my time.

I think this will work, but note that you are not really using SS inherited security.
What you might do is something like this:
    MasterGroup <--Assign provisioning here
    |_Subgroup1 <--Assign filter
    |_Subgroup2 <--Assign yet another filter
    |_Etc.
With the above layout you define provisioning roles once at the topmost group (MasterGroup) and then assign unique security at the subgroups.  The users are in the subgroups and their usernames will go to their ids (which will have no provisioning), then their immediate group (ditto), and then the parent group (which will).
What you have defined for security (as opposed to provisioning) sounds good to me although I have never tried to do this with MSAD groups.  I don't see a reason for it not to work.

  • Time Machine Security? No Encryption?

I am concerned about security for my Time Machine external hard drive. Is there no way to password protect it or encrypt it? The last mac I had was 6 years ago running OS 9.2.2 so I am having to relearn everything with OS X. Thanks for any help.

Note that if you use FileVault to encrypt your Home folder that Time Machine will not backup the Home folder until you log off from your account. You must then leave the computer running until TM finishes the backup. For some users this may prove very inconvenient especially if you need to leave the computer unattended while the backup is going on.
You must also leave sufficient free space on your hard drive that is equal to or larger than your encrypted Home folder in the event you may need to decrypt the Home folder. If there isn't sufficient space you will not be able to decrypt the Home folder.

  • A1 - Lenovo App Store doesn't list installed apps or possible updates

This may be because of my inexperience with the Lenovo App Store, but whenever I start the Store app, I get an empty list of current and available apps. I did download and install Firefox cleanly, but no other installed apps are shown by the Lenovo Store app. I expected to find a list of pre-installed apps with potential updates to many of them. Am I missing something?
    Solved!

Thanks to both of you. I have used the Android Market with my Samsung tablet, and it is very easy to work with. I was just afraid that Lenovo had some exclusive apps in their Store that might need to be updated. Do you think it is worth the effort to uninstall the pre-installed apps and reinstall them from the Android Market to get automatic updates?
Yes, but you can't uninstall the pre-loaded apps unless you root the tablet. You can uninstall updates, but not the base app. I have not rooted my A1 and have no plans to do so. I am content with it the way it is. BTW I have a total of 166 aps with no problems. I would suggest you install anti-virus software (any of the free ones are OK), and look into a replacement launcher (I use GO). I suggest that if it sounds interesting, install it. You can always uninstall with no problem. I have moved any apps possible to the internal SD card. Can't install on the external card without rooting. I think that the A1 is the best sub $200 tablet out there.
