Seeing ARP entries on shut down VLAN interface.

Hi,
As you can see below I see a mac address picked up on VLAN 1 on this switch, however vlan 1 interface is shut down? This is causing connectivity issues so does any one know why it is happening?
Cheers

Thanks for helping actually i was reading this part from book
There are no SVIs active on the MSFC-not even VLAN 1. Let's add an SVI for VLAN 20 and see what happens:
Code View: Scroll / Show All
MSFC-6509# conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
MSFC-6509(config)# int vlan 20
MSFC-6509(config-if)# ip address 10.20.20.1 255.255.255.0
MSFC-6509(config-if)# no shut
MSFC-6509(config-if)# ^Z
MSFC-6509#
17w2d: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Vlan20, changed state to down
17w2d: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Vlan20, changed state to down
MSFC-6509#
MSFC-6509# sho ip int brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
Vlan20 10.20.20.1 YES manual down down
The SVI is now there, but it won't come up. The SVI will not come up unless there is an active port in the VLAN in layer two. I often forget this fact and, after adding the SVIs, go off to create my VLANs only to find that none of them will come up. To illustrate the point, I'll assign an IP address to the CatOS management interface SC0, and place it in VLAN 20. This will put an active device in the VLAN:
CatOS-6509: (enable) set int sc0 20 10.20.20.20 255.255.255.0
Interface sc0 vlan set, IP address and netmask set.
Now, with something active in VLAN 20, the VLAN 20 SVI comes up in the MSFC:
Code View: Scroll / Show All
MSFC-6509# sho ip int brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
Vlan20 10.20.20.1 YES manual up up
Now i know that Sc0 management IP of Cat OS is assigned at switching side.and we can assign only 1 ip at switching side which is using CatOS right?

  • Shut down an interface based on CRC errors

We have 4510's with dual 10 gig links back to 6509's.  When one of our interfaces starts to accumulate crc errors it impacts the latency and availability of our end users behind the 4510.  Either the interface err-disables or we manually shut it down and the other 10 gig link is unblocked by spanning-tree and traffic begins to flow as usual.  Is there a way to use EEM to detect these input or crc errors and shut down the interface?
I'm looking at the below as a resolution:
event manager applet Te5/1 trap authorization bypass

action 1 cli command "configure terminal"

    action 3 cli command "shutdown"

    Works perfectly!

  • ITunes shut down scripting interface used by other applications

Everytime I try to close iTunes I get a dialogue box stating:
"One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?" Kind of annoying, anyone know how to fix this?

This is a fairly common annoyance. iTunes has a scripting interface that a host of applications use to talk to it. It could be any one of a number of processes that are running at the time. Usually it's some other media related application that can synch to an iPod but it could be some unsuspect application as well, logitech setPoint for example is often sited. To find out, see whats currently running in the background (Press <ctrl><alt><delet> and click on the Processes tab in Windows Task Manager). Make a list of suspects then try shutting down those applications. You have Task Manager end the process, but only if you know which ones are safe to terminate. Once you find the culprit you can possibly make that application run manually or remove it. Otherwise you just have to live with itunes quirks.

  • Anyone else seeing their MBP's shut down due to overheating and no fans?

I have a 2 month old MBP that overheats and locks up when playing World of Warcraft in OS X. The processor temp will get to 100-105 and the MBP locks up and requires a forced hard boot. The fans don't spin up - they stay at 2k.
Also, on the Windows side (64 bit Vista), the upper left hand corner of the chassis gets extremely hot - again no fans spin up.
I have resorted to using smcFanControl to manage the fans in order to prevent overheating. I have seen many people post about this exact same problem on these boards - does anyone have any advice? I am concerned that I am frying the hardware over time!
I called Apple tech support and they say they have no knowledge of this being an issue.

No problem here, at first my fans were stuck at 2k regardless of the temps. I reset the SMC and that (at least for me) fixed the problem.
While I use and advocate the use of smcFanControl, I recommend that you get your laptop repaired (or replaced). Now with that said, there seems to be quite a number of threads of WOW users who complain about the heat being generated from using that game and likewise, it seems pretty evident that using Vista means your laptop will be running hot for what ever reason.
If your fans are not ramping up beyond 2k in OSX, then that's not right, if its running hot in vista or playing WOW then that might be another issue.

  • MDD refuses to sleep or shut down...

    Hi,
My mother is having a very frustrating problem with her MDD powermac. It refuses to shutdown or sleep. When I tell it to sleep, the screen goes black, and the fans stop. However, right as the fans stop, they start back up again and the computer is right back where it was. When I tell it to shut down, the computer goes through the shutdown process and restarts instead.
I've repaired the permissions, disk looks okay, reset the PRAM, unplugged all peripherals (except the monitor - third party with no hubs or computer control). I have also checked the engery saver options for auto power on on power failure.
Any ideas on what could be causing this or where to even start?

    Hi-
Have you tried a SAfe mode boot? Hold Shift whike starting. Safe mode takes a bit longer to boot than a regular boot, as various system checks/repairs are performed. Once in Safe mode, see if the sleep/shut down functions. If so, then it is probably a Startup item.
Another check would be trying a different user account. Setting up a new account with admin privledges is best. If sleep/shut down work in the new user account, then the problem is a Login item.
    Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items.
If this fails to help ID/resolve the problem, an Archive and install would probably be enough.
Without testing for startup/login item conflict, an Archive and Install will carry over any existing problems.

  • Finder wont shut down

Talk about good software. Leopard is so good it wont shut down. literally. I have a new intel Mac5 about a year old.
I have to press the power button to shut down every time. I have archived and install over 3 times now. Shut down all my third party stuff. Have the latest update.
I've heard that it doesn't hurt the computer to shut it down manually with the power button until I can come up with a fix.
any suggestion would be "greatly" appreciated.
i will wash your dishes for 4 years every other weekend (twice) when the eclipse of the moon is seen by 56% of the human population under 13. thanks

Shutting down with the Power button is definitely not safe, it could cause damage to your hard drive. This may be why you've had to Archive and Install three times.
The most common cause of shut down problems is an application or process that refuses to quit. There can be many causes for that such as an incompatible application, a runaway process, cache or preference file corruption, log file corruption. Even an incompatible peripheral could be the cause.
I'd suggest doing a couple of things. First, try booting into safe mode and see if you are able to shut down normally. Second, create a new user account. Log out of your account and into the new one. See if you can shut down normally.
Repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Perform some maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • HT6114 Since installing OS X I have to force quit to shut down

I can no longer shut doen in the conventional way; i must force quit.
    Thoughts/ideas ?

Next time you are going to shutdown try first quitting each open application separately. If one of them is not quitting properly that one is the cause of the shutdown failure. If they all quit without a problem then open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Look for any entry in red or an entry using a lot of CPU time as this is a sign of a crashed process. If you find one then remember what it is. Select the process, click on the Quit icon in the toolbar's left corner, then click on the Force Quit button. See if the computer shuts down properly.

I'm getting kernel panics each day as I shut down, the message of restarting by holding down the power button appears on the screen - it began about a month ago and. Do you have any ideas of how to solve the problem? I've copied the logs that I found for each kernel panic that still have the message logged. Please help if you can, I have read some of the other comments and perhaps it has something to do with my anti-virus software being on at start up. I have copied the log here. Any advice will be welcome.

    Two experiments you can try.
    1.  Boot in safe mode and see if you can shut down normally.  All thise additions won't be running in safe mode so this test would indicate it is one of them causing the problem.
    2. Uninstall all the intego VirusBarrier stuff.  That's my first guess and the troublemaker.

  • IMac unexpectedly shutting down

My iMac has begun to shut down unexpectedly, repeatedly. I've been struggling with this issue for two days now and so can describe the typical pattern of odd behavior. I use my computer in the office of my private English school. For several hours in the day I teach in the classroom next to my office and simply leave the computer on so I can pick up research and materials design where I left off. A couple of evenings ago I returned to my desk to find the Mac shut down. Odd, but not scary -- yet. I entered the Twilight Zone when I tried starting it up. It went something like this:
1st try- Partial startup, screen lights up, no chime, shutdown.
2nd try- Complete startup, no user apps launched, shutdown after less than a minute.
3rd try- Complete startup, begin cautiously checking for damage and causes, shutdown after several minutes.
4th try- Begins as 3rd try (above), checked Console log, attempted to set up diagnostics programs to determine cause, shutdown in about 20 minutes or so.
This basic pattern (1~4, above) has occurred three times so far. In addition, there have been other (less regular or perhaps more widely spaced timing?) instances. Also, I successfully booted from an external firewire drive dedicated to TechTools as an "edrive" and running Mac OS Tiger same as my Mac. To my horror, shutdown occurred after about 10 minutes booted in the external edrive! It was very late so I left it shut down and went to bed (for a very poor night's sleep!). Early the next morning, in my second attempt booted in the external edrive, I got a diagnostics utility launched (DiskWarrior) which found no directory damage on the internal drive! I decided to try another one (TechTools) and the Mac shutdown again while testing was going on!
At this point I had lessons I started the Mac and let it sleep while and put the whole mess aside till evening. I pondered everything I thought might be wrong. The Mac was still up and sleeping several hours later. Yet, when I tried to use it, it started the pattern of shutting down described above. I disconnected all peripherals and freed up ports, and tried agin.
Temperature is usually under control as I have designed an effective constant airflow system for my office that incorporates fans which keep air moving, so no dead air can collect in the space behind the Mac. In addition, I reposition my desk according to the season; now it is by a north window with no direct sunlight and which I keep cracked open to the cold winter air which bathes the back of the computer constantly. One cool Mac. Of course, if internal components, such as the sensor responsible for monitoring heat, are defective, this will not matter.
I searched the Internet using various search strings, both describing my problem and using log data copied from Console. I checked this Mac forum and tried 3 times to post a message (with one successful post, but to the wrong section!). I have read Tech blogs and everything else I can between shutdowns.
This message was written and saved several times. Any ideas?

    Hi Miriam:
Thanks for taking the time for this. I have benefited as a lurker from help you have given to others. Thank you, always.
I replaced the power unit over a year ago (I believe) supplied by mail from Apple. I have the exact records, but it would take too much time to dig them up and I am under the shutdown gun right now. Also, I am typing as fast as my chubby little fingers can hit the keys so there will be typos: apologies. I will dig out l those records after I get this email off to you and set them aside for my next post.
Against all my better instincts I decided to try and cure the problem by upgrading the OS and am now running Mac OS 10.5.2 (see below). Immediately after the OS upgrade the shutdown problem reoccurred once, then disappeared. If it were not for that one occurrence I would have called it cured. I decided to wait and see. The computer shut down unexpectedly a couple of more times, but randomly and infrequently, not following the pattern I outlined originally so I just kept observing it. As of today, the full-blown problem has returned, as originally described, again, as follows:
While using any application, or even left unattended with no application running, with nothing connected to the ports, the computer shuts down as if a kill switch had be pushed. (Unlike before the OS upgrade, no kernal error report appears.) Upon first restart attempt, all sounds indicate restart is happening normally, but before the screen lights up it shuts down again. This incomplete startup happens once, then on the second attempt, it starts up normally, if somewhat slowly. After some time (15~30 minutes or so?) it shuts down again (I'll try to set a stopwatch on that).
The only user alteration of the system software immediately previous to this new round of shutdowns was allowing an Apple auto-update (Safari). As far as general heat issues are concerned, I have a temperature monitor application installed and keep an eye on it. Also, I take environmental measures to keep the work area cool and cool air moving around the CPU. At the moment Istat Pro 4.6 (newest, today) reports: CPU 75 degrees, Hard Drive 53, Atilla (my internal drive name) 61. I know this is different than the power unit overheating problem you mentioned.
I am beginning to suspect malware and will pursue that angle when I get time (got classes to teach for the next 8 hours). Hardware information you requested (or more, perhaps) is below (clipped from System Profiler).
    Model Name: iMac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac8,2
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.1)
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.5f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C31)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 9.2.0
Thank you again for your attention.

  • Kernel Panic when closing laptop during shut down

It was the 2nd day I had my MBP and was jsut heading to sleep.
I had selected Apple > Shut Down to turn off the comp, and closed the laptop (I put the screen down and whatnot)
Few minutes passed, and I still saw the sleep light on for some reason. I opened the laptop back up, and there was the Kernel Panic screen.
I have no idea why it did this. Should I be worried?
It was just the 2nd day the MBP was in my possession and it would be really lame if problems were already arising THAT early.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The machine hadn't completed the shutdown process when you shut the lid and effectively told it to sleep. The conflict between the two tasks is what caused the panic. Wait until you see the MBP actually shut down before closing the lid. There are also some out there who suggest letting it cool a few minutes before shutting the lid to save the screen, which kind of makes sense depending on how intensively you'd been running it prior.

  • More Flexibility for Turning On/Shutting Down Mac

    Greetings,
I have a Mac which I use to stream iTunes to my ATV 2. However, it is not very accessible to turn on/off. As it is for business demonstration purposes, I set it to turn on and off at specific timings.
However, it needs to be on from Tuesday to Friday at 11am - 9pm and on Weekends from 9am - 6pm. I searched the net for alternatives as the built in scheduler is too simple. There was no improvements since the first few releases of OS X.
Perhaps there is something settings in scheduler that I'm missing out or there are 3rd party softwares I could use?
    Please advise.
    Cheers!
    Terry

I did download this file more than 6 different times and from different macs. Same results. The MBP update is already installed but via the Software update and now I am trying to reinstall it to see if it solves my problem.
When I run Disk utility, I got an error which I repaired but it seems like it wasn't repaired at all. I verified the permission more than 3 times, repaired more than 3 times, verified the disk and repaired as well but no luck. I keep getting the same log error whenever I try to verify disk permission.
Here is the log file: http://www.roderickballan.com/mac/
    @ Barney-15E
Where to find the log file? I can't see anythin when I shut down. It logs out and hang there.
    Thank you both!
BTW, I am Roody I guess I should join both accounts in some way.

  • Mail not shutting down

Mail will not shut down.  Have to force quit. It will send email but receive email.  Any ideas?

Thank you for the tip. I am new to Mac, so this was a great help. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but had to see if it would shut down then, of course, had other things to do. Everything is back to normal now--at least on my computer.
    Thanks again,

  • Repair permissions runs then Mac shuts down

I have installed ilife 09 and since doing so my iphoto will not stay open. Also iphoto only displays about 10 photos of a possible 500. On another post I was told to run "repair permissions" in an effort to resolve this problem. While repair permissions runs my mac shuts off. Any clue as to what is happening?

Look in console to see why it is shutting down - I'm going go guess overheating - if so try cleaning your air vents to assure unobstructed air flow to the interior of the computer
