Seeks Advise on Selecting the Oracle DB Tuning Tools

I could not find the most relevant discussion group, so I picked this one since it seemed the closest. Please ingore this if you find it out of place here.
We would like to hear about your recommendations and experiences with various DB tuning tools available in the market. There is already a product from Oracle, Oracle Tuning, Diagnostics, and Change Management Packs, which is bundled with the Enterprise Manager V21. Are you aware of similar rival products? And how would you rank them?
We are looking to pick a product and we highly appreciate to receive you feedback.

One of the products I have very good experiences with is Precise SQL.
You can analyze certain performance issues (I/O, memory, etc) up to statement level. Another nice feature is that it can predict, based on a performance warehouse, how certain changes will affect the performance on your database even before you apply them.
What I really liked the most about this product is the minimum impact it has on your database. It doen't use the Oracle v$views, but it reads the SGA without using Oracle.

Entity Framework - unable to select the oracle data connection from the wizard that allows you to select the data provider. Even though we successfully added a data connection that points to an oracle database, we still can't select an existing data connection or create a new database provider that points to an oracle instance.
we are using both vs 2008 sp1 and vs 2010. We connect to oracle 11g and we use the latest oracle odp.net driver. the Driver is installed and working in vs studio.

I had this exact problem when I started. I think I had downloaded the wrong odbc (the 64x version). When I unloaded that version and downloaded the 32bit version it worked.

Hi,
You need to install the patch on each node where APPL_TOP is presented. If you have the database installed on one server (with none of the application components on this node), then you do not have to run anything on this node, just do on the APPS tier node. To launch Oracle Diagnostics test, assign "Oracle Diagnostics Tool" responsibility to the application user and run the test from this responsibility.

Need advise on selecting the IDE for swing UI development

Hi,
I'm looking for a best IDE for developing swing application.
Our application is a Rich Desktop Client Application which will have more than one hunderd screens. And all the business logics will be J2EE EJB services.
At the initial stage, we thought of using the .net winform technology as Desktop Rich GUI for its best look & feel and productivity perspective, by invoking the business services thru webservices.
But later, we decided to use swing components which are somewhat promising now-a-days. This will avoid the multi-platform issues, maintainability and perfomance difficulties.
I would be so much grateful, if somebody could share me their experience on deciding the IDE which would be the best for Swing development currently.
If any one has the list of different swing UI builder IDE and the feedback list correspondingly, could you post them?

I experienced both NetBeans and Eclipse recently. I did not work in-depth in any of these IDEs for swing application. All the observations are from my first impression on them.
Please find the below are my feedback on both of these IDEs from my experience in the swing application development perspective :
Net Beans
Advantages:
1. Palette Manager option is good -> I can add the custom components to the palette very easily and make them available to use them readily.
2. IDE Layout / Framework is impressive -> In the swing design mode, the palette, properties, inspector and source all are evenly arranged in a way that things can be managed smoothly. It's very impressive.
3. Swing Components Alignment options are good -> IDE is very smart in arranging the swing components in the Panel or Frame. Even it helps the user by showing the alignment lines in the background. So we can definitely say that Net Beans has come in much better shape.
Disadvantages:
1. I am not allowed to change the generated code in the IDE.
2. I can't change the component name or event method name, other than the IDE generated one.
3. Additional Design codes will be reflected only at the runtime, but not at the design time. Here the developer is loosing the flexibility of using the code changes that impact the design.
Eclipse - Visual Editor
Advantages:
1. Source and Design mode, both can be viewed simultaneously.
2. Source and design, both are in sync all the time. The user have the complete control with the code.
3. As everyone knows, the IDE is very powerful and ease of use.
Disadvantages:
1. I can't add any custom components to the palette to make it available for ready use. Only option is 'Choose Bean' to add the custom components. So I should remember the component name everytime while adding in the panel / frame.
I also tried few commercial plugins with Eclipse. Given below is my feedback from my experience,
1. Eclipse - JFormDesigner
Advantage:
1. It provides Palette Manager option and very smart in the swing components alignment settings.
DisAdvantages:
1. For the design mode, it uses JFD file and later java code will be generated from this JFD file. So what you are seeing in the design mode is JFD file, not our java source. Developer have no option to see the source changes in the design mode.
2. It is a commercial product.
2. Eclipse -> Jigloo
Advantage:
1. Easy to use.
2. Custom swing components can be added the Palette.
Disadvantage:
1. It is similar to Eclipse - Visual Editor, but the difference is in the look and feel of the palette and event handlings.
2. For commercial purpose, you have to purchase it.
I also tried the JBuilder, but seems that it provides the Eclipse - Visual Editor for Swing Application development.
I didn't try the IntelliJ IDE yet, for swing application development. Some of the forum responses tells that IntelliJ IDE is very powerful, but not recommended for swing application development.
Eclipse - Visual Editor is promissing and it's open source. As I'm beginner to the swing development, I might have some short vision on some of the above said items.
If somebody have a better comparison sheet and could share with us, I would be grateful.

Eclipse Indigo JEE M7 could not install Oracle Weblogic Server Tools

Hi,
Anyone managed to install Oracle Weblogic Server Tools plugins on Eclipse Indigo JEE M7?
It appears that Oracle Weblogic Server Tools depends on EMF Core 2.6 while Indigo JEE M7 packages EMF Core 2.7.
Will the Oracle Weblogic Server Tools be updated at http://download.oracle.com/otn_software/oepe/indigo/wtp/ to have same EMF core dependency as Eclipse Indigo?

The current tech preview release of OEPE for Indigo is targeted at Indigo M6. It looks like component versions changed in M7, making the current tech preview incompatible with M7. The official support for Indigo will ship in early to mid July.

The only way you can get 9iR1 release software is by asking it to your Oracle representative. The oldest 9i release available for public download is 9iR2.
You could try the administrative 9iR2 client, it can work with 9iR1 releases.

How to select the Printer in Oracle Reports 6i R2 (Windows 7)

Hi,
In a client site they have more than one printer suppose one is dot matrix and other one is laser printer or some other brands.
They take printouts in both. Recently I installed Oracle Forms & Reports 6i R2 Runtimes in some Windows 7 32 bit PCs. In those PCs, its not allow to choose the printer, it print with windows default printer.
So Is there any way to give an option to select the printer...??

I suggest you to create a form to invoke the report, allowing user to select the printer and then pass it as parameter DESNAME

Oracle does not have a functionality like SQL Server for TOP
selection. The ROWNUM option should be used with great care and
you may get unreliable results.

If the AX is working properly, it should not show up in your list of available networks (since it is "joined" to your router). Have you unplugged and replugged your AX? Unplugged and, after a minute, replugged your router? Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router? (if so, disable it to see if the AX works ... it will broadcast its MAC address to the router, and you can add it.) Is your firewall turned on? Turn it off and see if you can access Airtunes. You will have to open a port in your firewall if that is the case.
The AX should have the same network name as your router the wireless tab. When it shows up, what name is it broadcasting?

OUI of Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 r2 for Linux fails after selecting the components to install

I'm currently trying to install oracle9i r2 (9.2.0.1.0) ond RedHat Linux 7.1 and set up the environemt as
described on puschitz's website.
after starting OracleUniversalInstaller and selecting the product (Oracle9i Database) the system begins to
load certain things (seen in progressbar) but when it comes to "Loading Java Runtime Environment" the installer disappears / process dies with no error output in /tmp/OraInstall*. As I see in this temporary directory and in the configuration file (INSTALL_DISK/install/linux/oraparm.ini), the installer is using
the java 2 1.3.1 jre to run itself.
I also have problems accessing the textelements, looks like a focus error or something similar. But I can
work around by playing a little with the buttons... g
Has anybody experienced similar problems with installing? Any workarounds / fixes / ideas?
There are the following JRE/JDK's installed:
- j2re1.3.1 in /usr/local/java
- blackdown jdk118_v3 in /usr/local (symlinked to /usr/local/java)
- blackdown jre118_v3 in /usr/local (symlinked to /usr/local/java)
- jre116_v5 in /usr/local/java
Can someone please help?

For those experiencing the Problem on RedHat Linux 7.1:
I have finally found a solution. As on SuSe's homepage and the post of Anthony Monter (thanks) remarked,
it is a problem with glibc.
From http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2002-056.html I upgraded my glibc-rpm's to version 2.2.4-24
using "rpm -Fvh glibc-2.2.4-24.i386.rpm glibc-common-2.2.4-24.i386.rpm glibc-devel-2.2.4-24.i386.rpm glibc-profile-2.2.4-24.i386.rpm"
I also changed the settings for shared memory size as described on http://www.puschitz.com/InstallingOracle9i.shtml. But this will cause a problem later during installation, if at all.
