Segfault in python, perhaps due to lapack update?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes...
I write physics simulations (for university) using numpy/scipy/matplotlib under archlinux. Some code which was recently working fine started segfaulting (all the python script would spit out was "Segmentation Fault"). It wasn't anything particularly unusual, just plotting some lines inside a loop. I initially tried recompiling numpy and matplotlib, to no avail. Then, I tried rolling back several recent updates to find the source of the problem, and when I rolled lapack-3.2-1 back to lapack-3.1.1-4, the segfaults disappeared, and everything is working as usual.
I don't feel like I understand the source of the problem well enough to attempt to file a bug report at this time, but I post this topic in the hope that perhaps someone else with a similar problem will find it useful, or someone smarter than me might be able to figure out what's going on.
edit: I neglected to mention that this is on x64 architecture.

Well, I can't really help much, except give a couple standard-ish debugging tips (assuming you have, first of all, re-upgraded lapack):
- Make the first thing your script does is quit(), before anything else. If the script segfaults under these conditions (ie, doing "nothing"), something is really up with the compiler since it's crashing before it even starts executing code, and you should definitely submit a high-priority bugreport. If, however, python likes you (:P) and it doesn't crash, start moving the quit() down the file until python does crash, and note what's going on at that point - perhaps try rearranging the code to see if you can make everything like each other by reformulating your algorithms.
- If you can, submit the script to the Python mailing list with information gleaned from the previous point. This will be the biggest help to the python devs as they'll be able to watch Python as it executes the file and (hopefully) see what's going on.

Will Apple replace my phone if it broke due to an update?

I've had my iPhone 5 since September, so about 6 months now. Last week, I was backing up my phone like I do every so often, and I was asked if I wanted to update my phone to the newer, updated version of iOS 7. (I believe it was iOS 7.0.6) Anyway, a couple days later, I noticed that my phone started shutting off randomly. It started happening more and more, and sometimes it wouldn't even turn back on and I would have to do a "hard restart" (holding lock and home button). The only time it didn't happen was when my phone was plugged in, charging. I looked online a bit and similar things have happened to people who have dealt with battery failure or power depletion (?). I saw that restoring it could help, but I did and nothing changed. Just yesterday, now the fourth day that this has been going on, it shut off and has not turned on since then; when plugged in it will occasionally appear with the white screen with the apple logo, like it does when it's being turned on, or if I press the home button it comes up with the red battery indicator, like it does when the battery is dead (there is no way that the battery is dead). Anyway, I contacted Apple support online yesterday, as I'm a college student living on campus, without a car, and they told me to try to restore it again, because that should fix it, but iTunes couldn't even register that it was connected because it wouldn't turn on. The person I talked with suggested I take my phone to an Apple store. Luckily, spring break starts in a couple of days so I will be able to drive the hour to the closest store to me so they can take a look at it.
I'm just really curious if anyone else has had a similar problem, and/or if anyone knows if Apple will replace my phone for me? The screen is cracked, but it's been like that for probably 2-3 months now and I really don't think that has anything to do with it. The person I spoke with suggested that it could have been due to the update, but didn't outright say it. Thanks!

Same exact thing happened with me as well. I talked to someone last night on the chat again, and they told me that a cracked screen does indeed void my warranty. Although, I am 99.999999% positive that the update is what caused the problem, as I said before, the screen has been cracked for nearly 3 months now with no problem. I'm planning on going to the store on Saturday and going to see what they can do. The people I spoke with told me there is some things they can try to do in store, and if those don't work, depending what the problem is they can send it out for repair or replace it. Problem is, I don't have the warranty anymore so it's $269 for a replacement, and I'm assuming the repair price is based on what needs to be repaired. Luckily in your case, as long as there's no cosmetic damages, your warranty is most likely not voided, and they can replace/repair it for no charge.

ERROR: could not serialize access due to concurrent update

I use ejb+glassfish+postgres in my project.
The project is a web application for finansial data transfering.
I have three DBs, long global transactions, serializable isolation level, container-managed transaction.
When i test the project with concurent threads, i get an exception: "ERROR: could not serialize access due to
concurrent update"
I read that when you get suck kind of error, your program must rollback current transaction and then reply this transaction.
what do i need to do to complete this transaction? :
1) rollback and reply transaction
2) maybe, the are other ways to reply transaction (for example: glassfish configurations, ....)

If your DAO is nicely separated from your service layer as it should be then the solution I suggested above works and doesn't require you to change many classes because you can catch the expection in the DAO layer and do the retry in the DAO layer. That's where the solution belongs too because it's only applicable for your current database solution (Postgres). i.e If you change your database solution you need to change your DAO anyway, but only your DAO. If you put the solution in your service layer (or client layer) then you need to change those layers when you change your database solution which defeats the purpose of the separation.
If you still want the interceptor approach, you need to check if the transaction has been marked for rollback back, then you need to join the transaction with EM.join and from there you attempt to close and discard the joined transaction before starting another one to invoke the retry operation on. Bear in mind that you only do the rety when the transaction was marked for roll back because of that specific exception. Needless to say that this doesn't seem to be a clean way to handle your transactions (if you can get it to work that is).

While our system is loading lot of data, we are getting failures during level 0 RMAN backup with following error:

Per Oracle rep suggestions, we have already increased our redo log files (we have 12 groups with 1 file each) to 1GB each file. THe log_checkpoint_interval is also set to 87382. (OS block size 4k)
This is on Oracle 9.2.0.5 system on Windows 2000 AS clustered system.
During normal loading operation per statspack report the redo size is 1-2.5MB/second. This may be causing checkpoints every second.
Any suggestions to reduce contention of control file during RMAN level 0 backups?

One of the major guideline to adapt the best possible your database when RMAN is used is to configure the database as a Shared Server.
Your database is working as a Shared or Dedicated Server ?

OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X Heres the link if anyone else had the same problem!! This is if you deleted not only the Mac App Store, but iTunes, Calendar, whatever came with the Mac (Apps that came already installed on the Mac), if you deleted one of those then you have to reinstall the Mac OS, Note: This one is for Mac OS X (Maverick) my version is 10.9.4, go to that link and follow the instructions if you have Mac OS X (Maverick). Other help: Common Mistake: If you delete the app from the dock then just go to finder and applications folder and drag the app back onto the dock(it was just deleted from the dock NOT your system/computer). The easiest way to fix the hosts file is to restore it from a backup that predates the modification, or to copy the unmodified file from another Mac. If you can't do that, then do as below.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Paste into a Terminal window by pressing command-V. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
# Host Database
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
127.0.0.1                              localhost
255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
::1                                        localhost
Below that, you may see some other lines. The first 9 lines should be exactly as above, apart from differences in the blank space within lines. Otherwise you can't use this procedure—STOP and ask for guidance.
If the contents of the TextEdit window are as described, close it, then enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (by copy and paste):
sudo sed -i~ '10,$d' /etc/hosts
You may be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. Quit Terminal.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
That will fix the hosts file. There is now a copy of the old hosts file with the name "hosts~" in the same folder as "hosts". You can delete the copy if you wish. Don't delete the file named "hosts".

Past due Will be updated

I have a strange issue with software deployment. I Deploy some software which is set to "available" and the user installs it through the software center. for some reason after a few days/weeks the software status displays "Past Due - Will be
updated"
This is the Command that is running:

Im not sure if it is because I have made a configuration change? is the installer doing something again on the computer?

"Past Due - Will be updated" should be caused by a configuration change.
CIAgent.log on the client records some information about that.

I am working on a project for an internship and I am editing a video I had the video files working and then I started doing some editing and animations for the video and now for some reason when I open the file into AE I get this message so I tried starting over same message when I import the video files.

I had this problem after converting some MPG's to avi's... the resulting filenames were 'foo.MPG.avi' ... the error message only seemed to indicate it was foo.MPG, so AE thought it was a MPG container type by parsing wrong, when it wasnt. i renamed all my files to just the avi, like 'foo.avi' and then imported into AE and it worked, no errors.

Thanks. I was unaware of a portable version. Seeing how it's still newer than a 4.0, I'm not sure if it would work or still have the same hiccups the updated full version has. There are verification issues and html vs. plain text issues between dotster and the latest Firefox versions. Dotster said it has to be 4.0 or older. If I find a secure site to download an old version, can download it without it affecting my current version? Can I have them both running without them affecting each other? I'm wondering why Firefox is not taking care of the problem (informed by dotster that they're still waiting on Firefox for a fix).

Can't Install Itunes on Windows 7 64-bit due to unwanted updater

OK, so I've known for years that Apple puts a WHOLE lot of crap on your computer when you install Itunes. It asks you specifically if you want to automatically update Apple software, and no matter how hard you click the NO box, it puts the apple updater there anyway.
I just purchased my first piece of Apple hardware, namely an iPod touch, and due to this failure of Apple to respect my software wishes, it turns out I've wasted my money because the Apple Software Updater fails to install due to security restrictions.
I run the Itunes installer as administrator. I have given full rights to my logged in Windows user to every folder related to Apple in the Program Data folder. I have spent a couple of hours trying every fix that is availalble in the Apple forums and the Microsoft forums, to no avail.
Seems to me the BEST fix is for Apple to drop the arrogance of forcing me to install the Apple updater in the first place, and trust me to know when I want to download a newer version of Itunes.
This is not the first time I've seen this happen with 64-bit versions of Windows. My guess is that I'll have to extract the Itunes app from the itunes.exe installer, and hopefully be able to install only the software I want. But at the moment I'm kind of peeved that I have to jump through those hoops, and of course, it's entirely possible that won't work at all either. And of course, without iTunes, the iPod touch is completely useless.

Are there any special charaters in your user name? I know that has caused issues in the past. You might need to contact Adobe support for this one.

This is a good one so bear with me, I'll try to be as precise as I can.
I updated FF to 6.0.2 yesterday and since then iGoogle (and perhaps other pages.. not sure on this) does not display correctly anymore.
Most evident is the fact that the links "Advanced Search" and "Language Tools" shown (usually) on the right side of the search edit box, don't show up anymore.
Other changes are the graphics which are used by the gadgets. In IE9 & FF before the update, each gadget showed round corners, not anymore in FF after update. Also, if I try to change the theme, the buttons "Add This" don't show up in FF now.
Now, here's the kicker! I completely removed Firefox from my system, meaning uninstalled it using the remove settings as well. I also deleted my profile folder & the Mozilla Firefox folder after the uninstall. Then I reinstalled version FIVE (5.0) to see if I could revert to the why things were back then, and behold, same problem!! So now, I can't repair my firefox to work properly even if I return to older versions!? wow
Tried system restore to a few days ago, that didn't fix it.
Tried version 5.x, 6.x and even the beta 7.x (all from scratch after uninstalling and deleting the profile folder + program files(x86) Mozilla folder) --- still NO FIX! ack! ;)
Frankly, I'm at my wits end on this one. I usually can repair pretty much anything computer/OS related, but this one has me stumped.

P.S. I also tried safe mode (took the broken FF picture in Safe Mode), but it has the same issues. In other words, I'm now officially unable to have ANY version of Firefox display iGoogle correctly anymore (5.x, 6.x, even beta 7.x). Be it bare bone, with or without addons, etc etc. All this caused by updating to 6.0.2 from 6.0.1.
Note that I've done tons of updates before without any issues. Also been using FF for the last 6+ years I think (been a while ;) )

Turns out that it's iGoogle Styling that has changed! Not a Firefox bug (although there are bugs in the new iGoogle).
The changes to my homepage (iGoogle) happened just as I was updating 6.0.2. So this led me to believe it was a Firefox bug, and since IE9 still shows the OLD style on iGoogle, it reinforced this belief.
After reading up on it on the Google forums, and chatting with a great tech support on Mozilla tech, I realized it wasn't Firefox. So you can dismiss this as a human error ;)

Ipod Nano 7th generation touch interface is now screwed with due to apple update.

Hi, I recently purchased a new laptop switching over from a macbook pro 2010 of which the logicboard died. In this newly configured windows 7 64 bit laptop I downloaded the latest itunes. I then connected my ipod nano 7th generation to it and it requested to format it since it was formatted for a mac. I did so and restored my ipod nano 7th generation. After this however my previously perfectly working nano touch interface (swiping, touch to select) is now completely messed up. This has to be due to the formatting and/or the new nano update or itunes update from apple. I can't even swipe to the right or left to move between screen interfaces on my nano anymore. As well the touch icons require double taps and have rectangular white selection boxes over each icon (NOT NORMAL)
Overall I am very displeased and want apple to fix this with either a new firmware nano 7th generation update or apple itunes update for windows 7 64bit. I'm thinking of buying a replacement iphone 4 but now that this issue is prevalent how can I TRUST Apple that nothing wrong will occur with connecting a new iphone 4 to my itunes on a windows 7 64 bit PC.

REASON FOR POSTING THIS HERE: I want more exposure to this issue. I couldn't get access to customer support since my ipod nano 7th generation is over a year old. This is cruel but whatever, Apple does what it wants and I will post this here to do what I want. Gain exposure to this defect that clearly Apple is not addressing since the above link displays a user with the same issue and posted the problem 3 months ago.

Very good question. I should have explained that part. VoiceOver changes how the navigation functions so it's a little tricky.
From the home screen I got to settings by swiping up and down instead of the normal left and right.
To open settings I first tapped once on the settings icon so that the box appeared around the icon. Then I double tapped the icon to open it.
I repeated the "tap once to get the box then double tap to open" process to navigate through the settings menu. Navigate to: Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> set to off. Once it's off the navigation will return to normal.
