Selecting a Number of Cells to Calculate

I have a science project that involves taking large amounts of masses at specific dates then averaging these specific dates together. Is there any way to get a function to automatically select cells with a specific date/value/text in them?

Do you want to calculate the average of the dates, or the average of the masses measured on those dates?
Is there a pattern to the specific dates to be selected? Are measurements taken on other dates, and if so, are these measurements to be ignored?
How are the dates specified? Is there a pattern (eg. every Monday, or the 15th of each month, or every third day, starting January 1, 2010), or would a list of the dates appear random (except that the list would be in ascending order)?
Your easiest method of selecting the dates is likely to use one of the LOOKUP functions: HLOOKUP, p. 234, LOOKUP, p 245, or VLOOKUP, P. 288.
Which is appropriate depends on how your data is arranged and whether an exact match to the date is needed. HLOOKUP and VLOOKUP allow specifying an exact match; LOOKUP does not.
Once you've collected the values into a list, use AVERAGE (p. 211) to calculate the average (arithmetic mean) of the values. Note that although the User Guide doesn't say so in its article, the list of numbers can be specified as a range—AVERAGE(C2:C17) would return the average of the numbers in cells C2 through C17.
Take a look at the description and examples in the Numbers User Guide supplied with your copy of iWork '08 (Page numbers are given above). You'll find this guide in the iWork '08 folder in your Applications folder. If it's not there, you can download it via the Numbers User Guide item in the help menu in Numbers.

From your description, it appears you could use SUMIF to get the totals.
It's not necessary to know the number of times a name appears in the list to determine the sum of the numbers in the cell to the right, but if you have a separate need for that count, then COUNTIF will do the job.
As the names may appear in more than one column, you'll need to use one iteration of the formula for each pair of columns containing name and associated number. In your description, there are names in columns C and E, with associated values in D and F respectively, and all of these cells are in the same table (which I'll name Table 1). I would calculate the totals on a second table (Table 2) containing a list of all of the names in column A, starting at A2, the COUNT of times each name is listed in column B, and the sum of the values in cells immeditely to the right of each name in column C.
Table 2::B2: =SUM(COUNTIF(Table 1::C,A),COUNTIF(Table 1::E,A))
Table 2::C2: =SUM(SUMIF(Table 1 :: C,A,Table 1 :: D),SUMIF(Table 1 :: E,A,Table 1 :: F))
Select cells B2 and C2, then fill the formulas down each column.

Hi Paul,
Apple vocabulary for this is pop-up menu. In the Mac version of Numbers, it's a cell format, so if it's supported in the iOS version, I suspect you'll find it in the same place as you'd find other ways to format a cell—number, percentage, text, etc.

Natesh answer is perfectly correct.
But if you want to understand the number of cell in a block, open your application properties, in the dimension tab (not sure), your blocks are defined by the number of dense dimensions you have, and the number of stored members in those dimensions.
Number of cell in a block = Number of stored members in dense dimension 1 * Number of stored members in dimension 2 * ... * Number of... dimension n
Try to keep n very small of course ;). The more you have dense dimension, the bigger your blocks are. The more stored members they have, the bigger your blocks are.

I suspect the salesperson that told you that meant your online account with your carrier...have you tried logging into your carrier account online? To do this will require the sim number on your sim card, as well as the phone's IMEI number...you get the sim number off the sim card & the IMEI number, for the phone, is printed on the box.

Okay then. If your seven numbers are in column B then the formula next to each number in column C would be
=IF(B=0,0,1700/COUNTIF(B,">0"))
This assumes all non-zero numbers are positive numbers. The sum will be 1700.

How do I select multiple, non-adjacent, cells in Numbers?

I have a spreadsheet that I need to select multiple non-adjacent cells for the purposes of highlighting them and I can't figure out how to do it. The Excel equivilant would be highlight a cell and then click he desired cell while pressing cmd. This does not work nor do fn, ctrl or option. Is this possible and if so how can I do it?

It's apparently one of those many things that haven't been implemented in the iCloud beta. You'll be able to make that type of multiple selection if you spring for the OSX version of Numbers.

UPGRADING WITH A PERFECT BATTERY BUT WITH HIGHER NUMBER OF CELLS

i m using HP PAVILION DV5 1104-TU ENTERTAINMENT NOTEBOOK PC since 4years, recently its motherboard got crashed so after a wrong reply ,finally i got the motherboard from ebay which was perfectly apposite for my model,now its battery is not giving backup so i wanna buy a new battery but with 12cells or even more for extra backup, my battery's part no is 484170-001,my laptop screen is 15.4", 2gb ram,intel core 2duo, i wanna buy it from ebay but please provide the right battery which will fit with ease, as in my earlier post for motherboard the first reply was for a wrong motherboard as they s, do provide some ebay links for the higher number of cells if possible plus if i get to know about hours of backup

Yes, it will sit a little higher in the back due to the thicker battery. This will not harm the notebook. Generally speaking, an extended cell battery will cost significantly more than a standard battery. Think of the extended cell battery as a V8 and the standard battery as V4. The V8 is bigger and costs more than the V4. The one I linked to on eBay was about half of what the battery is from HP directly. Anthony82 provided a battery as well, but it's a non-OEM battery which typically means it's not an actual HP battery (think third party). LIke the one Anthony82 provided, I don't see any indication that the battery in the expert's link is a genuine HP battery. This might account for why is is significantly less as I don't see how a genuine HP battery can cost $20-$35 USD as I would imagine it costs more than that to make it.
To answer your question, the one the expert gave you does mention your specific notebook model. If it doesn't work, then that falls on the eBay seller.
You have many options to choose from, so choose the one that you are most comfortable with. If you want to look for a genuine HP part, you can look for HP part number KS526AA.

Select a range of cells?

How do I select a range of cells to, say, copy and paste? In Excel I highlighted the cell and at the bottom right corner I clicked on a dark cross and dragged it to the last cell I wanted to highlight. How do I do this in Numbers.? I am in the process of convertin MS Word and Excel files to Pages and Numbers. All comments welcome.

Try ejecting your iphone from iTunes and then close iTunes. Now retry. Hope this helps.

I created billing doc, it save and gave the number but with error on account determination, i checked the no range corrected it and got the error: Incorrect doc.no.: 24. Select document number between 0090000000 and 0099999999.

I very much hope you've done it in a test system.
It seems that your document was given number 24, according to the number range that existed at that time. Then you went and changed the number range to 900000... and, naturally, number 24 is not within the valid range anymore. So what else did you expect?
If it was (fingers crossed) a test system, just forget about that document and create a new one. Otherwise you'll have to change the range back, then cancel the document 24 (make sure the cancellation does not post to accounting either), then change the range again.
