Selecting an object that is behind another object

Is there a keyboard command for selecting objects that are behind other objects in the stacking order? or is the only way to select them from layers menu? i'm always selecting the object that is on top of what I want to select, and wonder if there is a keyboard command to "click down" to the object i'm aiming for
thanks!

Yes, LVOOP uses value based references, and when you split the wire to write the owner you created a data copy. The function you're after requires you do use a DVR for all class functions in which case you'll get reference based OOP, which is more familiar coming from text based OOP.
It just so happens that G# uses that approach, take a look at it.

  • How to animate an object that goes behind another

Does anyone know how to go about animating a movie clip that would go behind another movie clip?
For instance: A stack of photos, that on click, the top photo would animate to the left (or right) and then animate to the back of the stack. My only problem is that i don't understand how to change the order of things, or if this is even possible (as essentially eveything is on layers), the only way i can think of is to have everything on one layer, but then this would interupt the animation of each photo
    Cheers

I'd use a combination of the setChildIndex() function and AS3 transitions. I would create a top layer see-through (alpha value 0) movieclip. When the user clicks on this top layer, animate "fly" the top pic out using the FLY transition in fl.transitions. Then use setChildIndex() to shuffle the pics however you want.
A bit about setChildIndex(). The highest number is the pic on top; 0 is on the bottom:
setChildIndex(TOP-PIC_movieClip,N); /* transparent pic that is always on top */
    setChildIndex(picture2_movieClip,2);
    setChildIndex(picture1_movieClip,1);
setChildIndex(BOTTOMPIC_movieClip,0); /* blank pic used as placeholder for shuffles */
Add an onClick event to the transparent layer, which shuffles the setChildIndex() values as the user clicks the top layer pic, thus changing the pic that they see:
    TOP-PIC_movieClip.addEventListener(
      MouseEvent.CLICK,
      function(evt:MouseEvent):void
Now you have to code a little function that adjusts the setChildIndex VALUES. I don't have time to code it out, but here's some guidelines:
    a. When the user clicks, use setChildIndex() to set the value of the top picture (NOT the transparent layer on top--the top pic) to 0, moving it to the bottom. Remember that we reserved setChildIndex() space 0 for shuffles, so that we don't overwrite anything.
    b. Set up a loop to make the setChildIndex of the Nth clip to the N-1 clip. This rotates the pics into their new positions.
    c. Note that the picture in setChildIndex() space 1 will always be the same as in space 0.
    The AS3 fly transition example:

  • Selecting an object behind another object

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this. I am trying to place a rectangle behind a text box to make a bit of the text more visible. In other programs there is often a modifier key to select an object that lies behind another object. Does anyone know how to do this in iWeb 09?
    Kim

Have you tried adding background fill color to the text box with the Inspector/Text/Text pane?
That way there's no shape to have to align with.

How do you select an object that is directly under another object?
I was working from a template and I wanted to make a text box the same size as a column box that was put there in order to keep the text in the confines of the paper that is was being printed to.
I could actually put text in each column fine but I wanted it to be in a text box so that I could slightly tilt the test box to compensate for my printer feeding it in slightly wrong. I accomplished this on another template but I could not on this one. If I was working in InDesign or something I know I could just select that layer but I'm at a loss of what to do here. How do I select a column right under a text box? I just thought of something. Once I make the text boxes the same size as the columns I think I can just delete the columns from the inspector. But that would be kind of a work around. I know you can hold down command when nothing is selected from outside the document and then highlight but this is not working. Does anyone have some tips and tricks when it comes to having control over which objects you are selecting when it comes to objects that are overlapped as well as directly over each other.
    Thanks.
    Tim

I'm not sure it's documented any where, but it's not too difficult. First, ⌘-click outside of the layout area to enter object mode then drag the cursor towards the two objects until you see the handles. Now, again ⌘-click on the top object to deselect it. You can now move the underlying object to the front to edit, delete, etc.
After typing this, it dawned on me, why not just click the top object to select it & move it to the back? I've only done the other way a bazillion times & now I think of this.

  • A simple selection of objects behind and much more

Selecting things under a different object in the Illustartor is sometimes very annoying.
For proper selection of objects was invented several tools. Please use them alternately depending on the situation.
    - outline mode
    - preferences = object selections by patch only
    - menu Lock = lock selection, All artwork above other layers
    + isloate mode
    + smart guides
+ layers (pity that to this day can not enable the option automatically locates the object)
But still the selection of one object over time requires a lot of time and clicking. Especially if they are just above or below.
The Blender is such a great option. According to me, works well and is easy to use. You can work on hundreds of superimposed objects, and continues to act quickly. it is not perfect but I would very I would see in Illustrtaor. However, this requires a better reflection of the current use of the objects in Illustrator than it is today.
    New Method of Selection:
    1. Click on an object once and you select an object on top,
    2. for any re-clicking LBM selects an object underneath. Simple, fast and understandable.
+. By clicking and selecting objects at the same time watching a dream in which Appearance palette name and see what properties of the selected object.
+. Adding to the selection or subtraction:
             - When I have selected the correct object can click on the layer name
              - Layer palette displays a view of all layers
              - New: Automatically expanding palette view to show the structure of the objectindicated in the structure of the layers and stack.
              - Now I can easily add or subtract to the selection of other objects or select just another object.
Important to work with this method to modify the interface illustartor.
    1. Palette Appearance must expand and show more things. For example, as in this description:
        http://forums.adobe.com/message/3024803#3024803
    2. This rapid work with objects should also improve the Illustrator interface and make it more useful.
Quick change opportunity to give a name or a group or object.
Even now it is missing this opportunity. Even now it is missing this opportunity. For example, click and change the name in these views:
One Clik and change name of layers or object or group or patch...
Note. If it can be easily and quickly rename objects. RBM is an option on the menu will show that the category of the popup list of objects under the cursor.
It would be enough to click on the object and would be selected. Super for me!
    3. New. The new functionality.
         - Appearance palette retains the settings of the object was last selected. Just as color palette ikon "Out of... Click to correct".
The appearance palette, she could be named: "Last appearance use. Click to Add or Click+Alt to show".
         - This allows me to select a different object, and quickly give it the properties of the previous one.
         - Or click on the icon of the previous appearance when they are showing up and I choose only the one I want to use the new facility, eg by drag & drop the icon of the appearance of the currently selected object. — Something like a story last selected object appearance to choose to use the newfacility.
Or better. Drop-down list to the history of recently used names of objects.
The choice would result in giving the highlighted current object stored Apperance.Alt + Click does not change the selected object apperance just simply list Apperance with the possibility of drag and drop individual features in the current Apperance select object.
Appearance to such a list could choose to display in the view layers palette by clicking on the icon Apperance.
Of course, the idea presented is not conclusive, show just the way we work withillustartor expect from a modern program.
After the present work in Illustartorze are really very complex and currentlydevotes much time on it just to check something.
Currently Illustartor reminds me of a Christmas tree with different ideas than theprofessional tool for my daily earning.
I spend my time like other colleagues on this forum because I support the idea, and Adobe Illustrator.
I hope someone appreciates it. I've been looking around for an idea for anotherprogram to work with vectors.

  • How to 'hide' one stroked-only object behind another?

I'm struggling with something that shouldn't be this difficult!
    I'm laying-out a white-only T-Shirt logo (to go on a dark-green T-shirt)
For the sake of simplicity, let's say I have two ovals with no fill, just a white stroke.  A small oval overlapping (on-top-of) part of the edge of a larger (underneath) oval.    I
Any advice on how to 'hide' the line that's 'behind' the top object?
    Thusly: http://i.imgur.com/ZghWTMa.jpg

Actually, I'm not completely sure yet.
Steve's answer assumes screen printing with a single opaque white ink. It won't work if printing to non-opaque composite transfers, or cutting from aplique vinyl, or if you're going to import the two-ellipse artwork for combination with other artwork.
    Since you don't know:
    1. Draw the two circles with a stroke color and a fill color (ex: black Stroke, white fill) on both.
    2. Apply the desired stroke weight.
    3. Object>Path>Outline Stroke.
    4. Pathfinder palette: Merge.
    5. White pointer: Select the two inside regions and delete.
    6. You now have a single Compound Path; no overlapping objects, and actual "holes" where you want the substrate to show through. Apply whatever fill color (white, etc.) you need.
But bear in mind what has already been stated: White, unless defined as a Spot Color, does not "print." Think in terms of inks, not in terms of "color". In a program like Illustrator, "white" normally means "no ink." And you always have to know what printing method you are designing for.

  • Add Tags to Document tool put one object behind another or just deletes page content?

Using Acrobat XI Pro to make documents 508 compliant PDF. I've had a number of issues went using Add Tags to document option, it’s put one object behind another or deleting it all together. Also had issues when trying to adjust the reading order, content is moved or deleted. This PDF is created from InDesing CS5
Anybody know what I'm talking about or have any ideas about how to fix it? Thank

Content should not ever be deleted by adding tags, but it may appear so since - as you note - objects may go into hiding behind other objects. In theory you can bring them out of hiding by rearrange things in the Order pane, but I have much better luck using the Content pane - it provides a much finer level of control. If text is hidden behind a shaded box, for example, I will move the box above the text in the Content order, then usually convert the box to an artifact if it is not one already.
    Hope this helps.

  • Selecting an object at the back so as to see the scale

I'm running InDesign CS under OSX 10.4.11. In a previous post I was told how to see the scale of an object by using the Direct Selection Tool. Works well. It doesn't seem to work well when the object that I want to see the scale of is behind another object. If I select the Direct Selection Tool, and then Command-click on the object to select it, it becomes selected, but in a way that shows the wrong scale - it shows 100% instead of 90%.
I've done some testing on an object at 90% scale that is behind a text frame.
    1. If I select the object with the Selection Tool by Command-clicking, it has a blue border, with large squares in the corner and it shows me 100% as the scale. Wrong scale.
    2. If I select the object with the Direct Selection Tool (I first have to pull it out to the side, from behind the text frame), it has a brown border and shows me a scale of 90%, which is what I want to be able to see.
    3. If I leave the object where it is (behind the text frame, and not move it to one side), click on the Direct Selection tool, and Command-click to select it, it becomes selected with a blue border with little squares in the corner, but the scale is wrong: it shows 100%.
I've got an awful lot of images behind text frames that I want to check the scale of.
Q: How can I easily check the scale of an object behind a text frame? The only way I can do it is to move the object from behind the frame. There must be a better way.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I don't remember if CS had this feature, but in CS3 you simply hit the
select content content button on the control panel.

  • Illustrator hanging or hesitating when I select an object

Hey guys, I've got a question and I know that I can't be alone on this.
I've been having an issue for the last few months with Illustrator CC hesitating when I select an object. It happens randomly. I could be selecting text, an image, a shape, an anchor point, anything.
    Here's what happens:
I'll select an object with the direct selection tool and (without holding down the mouse button) move my cursor on to the next object.
Instead of being selected, there will be a noticeable delay, and after about half a second, the object that I just selected will follow my cursor as if I had clicked and dragged and then released.
Mostly it happens when I'm selecting multiple objects to do a move or a group or just something to a few things, but it doesn't only happen with multiple objects. Every time it does happen, I have to cmd+z, and reselect everything. This is super annoying when I've just spent a good amount of time direct selecting some anchor points and I have to go all the way back and do it over. This is absolutely destroying my workflow.
Also, I know it's not hardware related.
I have a brand spanking new 2014 MBP 15 inch retina. 16gigs ram, core i7, the whole shebang. Apple recently (yesterday) gave me this machine in replacement for one of identical specs, because I and they determined that some other things shouldn't be happening that were happening. Now, I don't believe this is the case anymore as I've just opened up illustrator for the first time and whaddya know. I was having a bunch of other problems with that other computer, and I thought this was just another symptom.
I use illustrator all day. I've been using it for years, on much less powerful machines. I have a 2011 dell at home that I prefer using now because of this problem. I'm not doing anything ram intensive, and it doesn't only happen on large illustrator documents. It happens in Mavericks and Yosemite. I'm all the way updated in everything. I'm not using a fancy mouse or wacom, and it happens with the trackpad as well.

It's a Mac retina display issue. Adobe seem to have been unable to optimise their products for retina displays yet...
See this thread also: Illustrator CC 2014 extremely choppy. Please help.

  • How to set BDCDATA table for a SELECT-OPTIONS object?

    Dear experts,
I have a transaction with PARAMETERS and SELECT-OPTIONS objects. This transaction will be called by another program by using CALL TRANSACTION 'mytransaction' USING mybdcdata statement. Below is some of the called transaction's source code:
    DATA:
      date TYPE sflight-fldate.
    PARAMETERS:
      p_carid TYPE sflight-carrid,
      p_conid TYPE sflight-connid.
    SELECT-OPTIONS:
      so_date FOR date.
This is what I wrote in the calling program to define the values of the called transaction PARAMETERS fields:
    DATA:
      wa_bdcdata TYPE bdcdata,
      it_bdcdata TYPE TABLE OF bdcdata.
    wa_bdcdata-program = 'MYPROGRAM'.
    wa_bdcdata-dynpro = '1000'.

    APPEND wa_bdcdata TO it_bdcdata.
    CLEAR wa_bdcdata.
    wa_bdcdata-fnam = 'P_CARID'.

    wa_bdcdata-fval = '017'.
    APPEND wa_bdcdata TO it_bdcdata.

  • Illustrator randomly selects unrelated objects

About once  a day, when I click on an object with the direct selection tool, the bounding box will be way larger than it should, implying another object on another artboard is included in the selection.
This happens when the object I am selecting is NOT grouped with anything else. Moreover, is seems buggy because the mystery object doesnt have its "edges" visible the way it would if it were legitimately selected.
I can deselect all, but then anything I click on, the selection's bounding box is expanded to include the mystery object. The only way I have found to deal with it is to drag a corner of the bounding box, then undo, and then click off again. Then Voila! I am able to select my object (or any other) without the mystery selection happening.
I use clipping masks a lot, as well as many artboards, and have wondered if it's related to this, as the mystery objects are sometimes masked images, and often on another artboard. However, the mystery objects are not always masked.
Anyone else having this weird problem??
I had it with CS5, and hoped it would go away with CS6, but it has not.

Ok, here is the first screen shot I've been able to get.
I know you can't see much at the full screen here since it's too small, so here's a closer look:
You can see above that the text box upper left is selected. That's the one I clicked on. Its edges are visible, and it's shown as selected in the layers panel. However the bounding box is much larger, yet no object it goes around has edges showing. Here are some zoom-ins of the same screen:
This last one shows that the bounding box seems to go around this text box ("webcast series"), yet it's not truly selected. This box has nothing to do with the one I actually clicked on, and moreover, no matter what I clicked on, the bounding box would wrap around this too.
So, I did what I always do, and grabbed a handle and dragged. It resized BOTH my "science of relevance" text box and the "webcast series." When I hit release the handle, then undo, everything goes back to normal, and I can click on any other object again without it selecting the ghost object. They go back to being perfectly unrelated to each other.
    So weird!

  • 'select objects: click and drag to select several objects' doesn't work

I have recently upgraded to Office 2010, and have the same problem as
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/office2010/thread/75270638-e02b-4a78-b291-043abbca04ae?prof=required
When I use Select - Select Objects in the Editing part of the ribbon to select multiple drawing shapes, it no longer works like in office 2007. I can't drag a rectangle in the document to select objects within an area.
I would have guessed this is the same problem as the link I refer to, but I'm not running the beta version of 2010. It seems not to be solved.
Anything I can do to fix this?

I have just registered so I could reply to this thread.
The registration process was very ... aehm ... frustrating, I was only able to fill in the correct Captcha after about 10 ties. But ... this is not unexpected, when working with a Microsfoft product. How am I supposed to know whether that bloody captcha
wants me to to write '4Yp8' or '4yP8'. There is no way to tell. You can distinguish capital letters when it is something like A, a or H, h, but not between y and Y or P and p.
I would like to thank all the posters for suggested workarounds. They work. Kinda - sorta ... . I was able to finish the editing of large picture (consisting of many graphics objects) that HAS to be made in word (My boss said so). All your tips saved
    me *hours* of frustration.
I would like to tell Microsoft programmers AND their managers, that *if* the quote in the second post is correct:
    ================
The work needed to make the object selection work as it did in Word 2007 was out of scope for this release. It's not as
simple as using the same feature that existed in the last version since we upgrading our graphics/art features; the way the shapes/objects need to be selected is different than how "old" graphics/art is selectable in Word 2007.
That said, the "select object" tool that exists in Word 2010 should allow you to select individual shapes. You can select
multiple shapes holding down the CTRL or SHIFT key while clicking shapes. You might ask how this is different than selecting shapes without turning on "select objects"; the answer to that would be to allow you to select shapes that are "behind" text, or more
    easily select rotated shapes, etc.

You are bunch of incompetent amateurs.
If I used such lame excuse for missing important functionality at work, I would be very soon replaced by a more competent programmer.
This time I am not a programmer, I am AN USER. And, as an user I do not care if your internal data structure for new objects doesn't let you do something easily. Find a way to implement that feature or change the data structure. Period.
