Self-Restarting iPod

My 30GB iPod keeps restarting by itself at random times. It will do it while a song is being played (whether or not the iPod is on hold), sometimes it will restart itself if the Next Song button is clicked, and sometimes it will do it at the end of an album or playlist. What should I do to fix this, or is it something I can't do on my own?

Yes I am having the same problems! And with the same music too! (Ben Folds--Way To Normal)
After Ben folds though,I bought another new album, and it is having the same problem... (James Morrison--Songs for You, Truths for Me [just incase anyone was intersted or if it makes a difference]) I guess I will have to write to customer service like you did, and hopefully I'll no longer have this problem. It's getting extremely frustrating
And yes, like you, it hasn't happened before I downloaded itunes 8.
hmmmm....

  • Mac Pro self-restarting

About the computer: early 2008 Mac Pro dual 2.8, 4GB stock ram, OS 10.6.7. Additional hardware includes: aftermarket ATI HD3870 (to replace failed stock card), Black Magic Decklink I/O; 1TB OSX HDD, 320GB Windows 7 HDD and 2x 1.5TB storage drives in RAID 0; Pioneer BD burner.
When booting from cold (an recently when waking from sleep) computer self-restarts at any point from powering until running about 10 minutes. Once the computer has been on from more than 10 minutes restarting does not occur, expect when waking from extended sleep. Typically, when booting from cold, the computer will boot full and the OS (OSX or Windows) will run for several minute. The computer then restarts. Following the first restart, subsequent restarts generally occur before the OS is fully loaded, but the exact timing varies (almost always following the "chime"). The process continues about 10 minutes or so until eventually the computer boots fully and stays on. Incidentally, occasionally--but not typically--the fans kick on high when starting the computer cold.
My suspicion is this is indicative of a power supply starting to fail. But I'd like to rule out other, more easily remedied  possibilities first. So far I have tried resetting SMU and PRAM/NVRAM and as well as booting with the windows hard drive and blueray drive removed without success. I set the computer to boot in Verbose but cannot see any indication of what's wrong; previous shutdown cause reporting "0".
Any suggestion--even  a way to test the power supply--greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that recent gave me similar problems.
When in Leopard or Windows XP, computer would randomly shutdown completely. Typically I was surfing the web and seemed to happen more often when watch Youtube videos.
Started off happening once in a while and then computer was unusable as it would not complete the boot up in to either OS. When I would power up after a shutdown, light would come on and I would hear "TaDa" and could hear drive activity----then sometimes it would just cycle with repeat attempts as noted by another "TaDa". If I was really patient, it would sometime boot into stable configuration only to have computer just have another hard shutdown after a few minutes.
Did a lot of internet searching and I though it was the logic board or power supply. Did SMC rest, PRAM reset. Checked the DIAG_LEDS. Figured it hard to be a hardware problem as issue was present in Mac OSX and XP.
Ultimately caved in and took computer to the Apple Store---they ran diagnostics. Diagnostics said one memory riser card was failing---replaced it for $50. Got home---same problem.
Back to Apple Store for a week. They replaced the second memory riser card and all is better now. Was not logic board or PS.
Computer is fine except can no longer get the Startup Manager screen to come up after holding OPTION key to select which OS (Leopard or XP) to boot into.
Hence the reason I came to the Apple Discussion board. Saw your problem and though I would add my recent experience.
I will be adding my current issue under a new thread.
You might try seeing if the problem occurs in OSX and Windows---if so---seems to indicate it is hardware and not software.
    Good Luck.

  • While updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

while updating ipod touch 4 i got an error message now stuck with apple symbol and empty bar. can i restart ipod?

    - What was the error message?
    - Try closing iTunes and then disconnect the iPod from the computer. Then reconnect the iPod.  If the iPod shows in iTunes then you can try again.  However, You should try to resolve the error message first.
    - If iTunes does not see the iPod try reetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - I recommend that you come back with the what the error message said and the condition of the iPod and if it is visible in iTunes.

  • After upgrade to EMET v4.1 and reboot EMET_Agent didn't self-restarted but now double clicking its icon shows error "Admin privileges are required"

    Hello all,
after on my Windows XP SP3 test client I upgraded to EMET v4.1 (from v4.0) and rebooted I noticed the following:
    - EMET_Agent didn't self-restarted so I had to run it manually (and I noticed that after it started it also self-added an undocumented --NoRestart command line option),
    - now that its icon is already in SysTray (Notification Area) the error "Admin privileges are required" appears whenever I double click on it or select 'Open EMET', so in case of need I can run EMET_GUI.exe only manually.
Is all this normal and expected or there can be any other possibly known way to avoid or definitely fix both effects ?
P.S. If to better show effects also providing any bitmap should be needed, then please just let me know.
Thanks in advance for any helpful reply or suggestion. Regards.
    Rob

    Hello everyone again,
I'm updating this post to ensure anyone interested may know how to definitely solve this issue.
After verifying that same annoying issue was also found with EMET 4.1 update 1 (valid for its 1st 4/30/2014 release, and verified also with
current and latest 5/29/2014 version) I recently made some little more investigation and after noticing its weird command line (reported by Process Explorer) simply as :
    --NoRestart
I simply ensured to manually force same option to be properly set at startup, and that's it. :-D
So here you are quick updated versions of :
    - EMET41NotificationFix.reg
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "EMET Agent"="\"C:\\Program Files\\EMET 4.1\\EMET_Agent.exe\" --NoRestart"
    - EMET41upd1NotificationFix.reg
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "EMET 4.1 Update 1 Agent"="\"C:\\Program Files\\EMET 4.1\\EMET_Agent.exe\" --NoRestart"
I hope this helps (and if it does then please be kind and vote this post as useful... ;-) ) while to some forum moderator I'm asking to kindly mark this post as Answer.
P.S. It's just a pity that latest current version of EMET 4.1.1 (aka 4.1 update 1) cannot easily install over its 1st release (its setup suggest to 1st remove existing version), anyway I've found a tricky (hacked) way to overcome this limitation while also
avoiding reboot so in future I'll consider to share it publicly in a different discussion.
    Regards

  • Finder self-restarts

My finder self-restarts, when i push the right button on my mighty-mouse 4 or 5 times. And it doesn't matter in what time and in what place i push it. It may be a creation of new folder on desktop or seein properties of file.. Just when i push fifth time - it self-restart. What can i do? In my re:Store tells, that it is a unique problem and they didn't know what to do. Please, help

If there is an item named StuffitCM in either Contextual Menu Items folder, move it out of that folder. Otherwise, move items out one at a time until you find the one responsible for the crash.

  • Can't restart ipod classic.

When I plugged my iPod classic into my Mac this morning to update my newest songs, it said "Battery very low." I suppose that could be, but it would be unusual. I'm pretty religious about keeping my iPods charged.
It's been charging for a couple of hours now, but still won't restart. I can hear the drive spinning up and down ...the Apple logo flashing on for a few seconds, then goes away.
I've tried rebooting a couple of times, but I can't tell if it's actually rebooting, or just spinning off and on like it's been doing while it's charging.
I don't know what to try next.

    Hi b.lindstrom,
If you are seeing the Red X on your iPod, then try putting your iPod into Disk Mode and then restore it within iTunes. If that does not work, then you will need to setup service on your iPod. The article below will have more information to help you out.
iPod Displays a Red "X" Icon

Some Nano's with iTMS podcasts installed will reset every time you push the center button, so get rid of all your podcasts.
After purging all podcasts, update with the latest updater. I am not sure if the podcast problem has been fixed with the most recent updater, but you could give it a try.

  • Reboot/restart ipod touch with broken power button

I dont think my ipod touch is broken but it wont turn on, the power button has always been broken and it cant be repaired. Is there a program or something i can download to completelty restart my ipod, I dont care about my apps or anything. I just want it to work

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Instead of using the puttons to place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Restarting iPod Touch when screen is frozen

I read all the information on restarting a frozen iPod Touch. Tried to hold down the home button, but the red iTunes connect symbol never showed up on the screen. In desperation I held down the home and on/off button at the same time. After a short time the iTunes connect screen can on, I connected the iPod to my computer and then was able to restore the iPod. Hope this helps someone.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

  • Restarting Ipod

Hi, I lost my Ipod when we were moving and when I found it I realized I had a lock on it. Problem is I forgot it.. Long story short, It's disabled and by this point I just want to restart it... But, when I hold down power and home to do that.. Go figure, it just takes a screenshot.  Can someone please tell me how to just restart it.. Thanks.

If you put a passcode on it you will have to restore through the recovery mode as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212

hey, i reset my ipod nano and it continues to restart nonstop, also, my computer (windows xp) is not reading my ipod, i need to use this tommorow on a trip so will someone please respond!! can anyone help!!??

    Well, it's after "tomorrow"...
Start you iPod in Disk Mode by holding Select (middle button) and Play/Pause for a few seconds. You can now connect to your iPod with iTunes and remove the last files added.
Reboot your Ipod by holding Menu and Select a few seconds.
It seems to be a problem with some mp3-files, either strange header-information or some weird problen with gapless playback.

  • Podcasts are restarting iPod

This problem started shortly after upgrading to version 7 of iTunes.
Currently about 90% of the podcasts I download, whether amateur or professional, will force iPod to restart when trying to play them. I have tried restoring the iPod (purchased about a month ago) but it has had no effect.
    Any ideas?

are the podcasts that the ipod is resetting on mono mp3s?
if so, perhaps check to see if the workaround from the following document is of any help with that:
