Selling fine art prints online - opinions welcome!

Hi everybody
I have been thinking a long time of starting selling fine art prints online through a dedicated website.
Of course I understand it's going to be a tough thing that will need a lot of work about SEO, web marketing and promoting.
I know most of the customers are from USA and from the other english language countries (AUS, CAN, UK, NZ, etc) but possibly, in a near future, countries like China, India and other emerging nations will also become good markets.
I would like to understand though what is the real "size" of this market; for this reason I'd like to hear experiences about this opportunity, especially from those of you who are already involved in such business, tried to go for it or just have heard about it.
Thanks everybody
Fabio

art is… everything
but there are categories too:
natural/artificial
black&white/color
good/bad : )
[of course, all subjective]
take a look at this:

can you tell what it is?
(and remember Duchamp's urinal and Magritte's pipe)

all art and art all
I admit that most "artists" are pompous delusional jerks
(but some are not)

  • Looking for detailed literature on Aperture3 color management for fine art printing

I am looking for a coherent , cohesive book or tutorial on Aperture 3 color management capability for fine art printing. Thanks.

Sad to report: does not exist, or if it does, is a closely held secret (by, imho, a coven of eyeless warlocks).
Color on OS X is likely -- just imho -- going to go through a transition which is not going to be helpful, in the short term, for Mac users for whom color is a vital part of their work.  X-Rite has, afaict, cast their lot with Adobe.  ICC profiling looks like a dead end at this point.  Apple is either going to have to leap-frog the competition, or use their technology.
One of the best resources I know is North-Light Images.  Up-to-date, Aperture-specific, authoritative information on printing is rarer than superb photography.

  • Creating an embossed mark on fine art print.

I'm trying to produce an image that emulates an artists embossed stamp so that I can use it on a web page.
This is a part of the image I was sent to copy:
Here's my attempt.  I've just made white letters and used Bevell & Emboss with along with Contour:
I think it's OK but I don't like the hard lines and I wonder if someone could tell me if it's possible to really soften it up so that it looks more like the paper original.
    Thank you
    Martin

    Thanks Zeno
    That helps.
I've also discovered that with the motif in the center I can use a soft brush to stroke the path.  That really loosens it up.  Trouble is, I can't seem to do it with the type.  The only way I could think of is to replace every letter with open paths and them stroke them the same way as the motif.
If there's no better way to do that, I'll just go with the soften slider in the effects panel.

  • Questions regarding proofing Epson Fine Art Papers in Photoshop CS5

Background. I have an Epson Pro Image printer—4900. I use Epson photo papers and usually print on glossy, luster and semigloss paper. Recently Epson sent me what they call a “Signature Worthy Sample Pack” of photos papers—specifically, Hot Press Bright, Hot Press Natural, Exhibition Fiber Paper, Cold Press Bright, Cold Press Natural, Velvet Fine Art and Ultra Premium Luster—my reward for spending lots of money on one of their printers.
My problem. I soft proof before I print. When I soft proofed using Epson’s profile for Hot Press Bright with Matte Black Ink, I chose Relative Colorimetric for Rendering Intent, checked Black Point Compensation, and checked Simulate Paper Color under my On-Screen display options. When I checked the last—Simulate Paper Color—a haze appeared over my image. If I unchecked Simulate Paper Color, the haze disappeared. I tried adjusting for the haze, but could not match my original and so got rid of the adjustments. I then printed my original using Epson's profile for Hot Press Bright Matte Black. It printed without the haze—beautiful print. Then, I tried the same with Velvet Fine Art. Soft proofing gave the same result—a haze when I selected Simulate Paper Color, no haze when unselected. I printed the original using Epson's profile for Velvet Fine Art, but this time, unlike printing with Hot Press Bright, the print had a hazy overtone.
Finally, my questions. Are there times when I should and should not check Simulate Paper Color? Is there something I might try to correct the haze in the Velvet Fine Art print? I have not yet tried the other papers.

You'll have to ask Epson about that.
Those settings are controlled by the driver.

  • Printing to Fine Art "Museum Etching" Error

Having an issue with printing Fine Art "Museum Etching" paper on my Canon Pixma9000 printer. This wasn't an issue until switching to a Mac, using Adobe Illustrator CS4. I recently purchased Canon's Fine Art Museum Etching paper and when selecting that media type within Illustrator CS4, and printing, I get this error message.
"Error Number : 88 The media type and paper size are not set correctly.  Cancel printing, correct the settings, and print again. If you selected Fine Art "Museum Etching" as the media type, you need to set the paper size appropriate to the art paper."
I have tried every different type of A3+ (13x19) paper sizes from the dropdown in the Illustrator CS4 print dialog panel, and get the same error every time. Any help in figuring out the cause would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Josh

I was under the impression that adobe color printing utility is a completely different application from PS. I am limited by the facilities ACPU provides. I cannot change the feed from the current "sheet feeder" to "manual rear feed." Fine art paper only works with the matte black ink which my printer is currently set to. I should point out that the greyed out issue does not happen in the PS print set-up. I should also mention that all other choices of media are available in ACPU. It is just the "fine art" section that is not, which does suggest it is something to do with the photo/matte black inks. However, as mentioned, my 3880 is set to matte black.
I think this is a bit of a curly one! I noticed that Epson were very quick to pass the problem on. I gather there is another way to print colour targets, used before the advent of ACPU. Image Science, the Australia Company doing my custom profiles will no doubt steer me in the right direction.

  • Print on Fine Art Paper using Epson 9900.

    Printing.  Sigh.
I can't get the "Fine Art" Epson papers "Hot Press" or "Cold Press" to show up in the printer dialog box.  (I pay by the hour and the square foot to use the 9900 to print works for a show that opens in two weeks, so this is both pressing and costly.)  I have tried everything I could think of (details below).  As a work-around, I exported 16-bit TIFFs, opened them on another machine in PS-CS6, and printed them.  The Epson Hot Press paper can be selected in the PS print dialog on that machine.  The print looks excellent.
OS 10.8.5 on an Intel 2.7 GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro w. 16 GB RAM.
    Aperture 3.4.5
    (No beta-ware installed.)
PS-CC (14.1.2 x64) on this machine.  (Do not have the version number of PS-CS6 that is installed on the other machine.)
My studio printer is an Epson 3880.  On that printer, I have to select one of the print dialog "Paper Size" presets with "(Manual - Rear)" in the name in order for the full complement of Epson Fine Art papers to show in the "Printer Settings➞Basic➞Media Type➞Fine Art Paper" drop-down of the printer dialog box.  (I am using "print dialog box" to refer to Aperture's print dialog, and "printer dialog box" to refore to the OS print dialog box that comes up after clicking "print" at the bottom right of Aperture's print dialog box.)
The 3880 does not accept roll paper.  One of my reasons for using the 9900 is that it does accept roll paper.  There are no "(Manual - Rear)" presets that I could find for the 9900.
Oddly, in PS-CC (this machine), I cannot specify "Hot Press" either.  Only on the other machine (which is at the community arts center lab where I print) does "Hot Press" show in the fine art paper types.  That machine does not have Aperture installed.
I have updated my 9900 driver, and downloaded the most recent ICC profiles for the paper.  I installed the profiles in both the system library and my user library.  I can select the profiles.
The current driver listed on Epson's site is 9.04.  The version which shows in "System Prefs➞Print and Scan➞Epson Stylus Pro 9900➞Options and Supplies➞General➞Driver Version" is 8.64.  I have re-downloaded and re-installed.  Twice.
I have rebooted, hard and soft.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Kirby.

Just a hunch, Kirby. I looked at the Epson support page:
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&info Type=FAQ&oid=119098&prodoid=63079720&foid=125986&cat=53461&subcat=53466
    and found in the FAQ:
    Selected FAQ
    Q:
Why are only matte media types displayed in the driver’s media list?
    A:
When matte black ink is selected in the printer driver, only matte media types are displayed in the driver list. The complete media list appears only when the photo black ink is selected.
Do you have any possibility to select the ink in the driver - matte or not? And are you trying to print glossy?

I bet there is a leaflet in the box the print paper came in, that gives a list of profiles for various printers.  Alternatively, go to the paper maker's website and look there.

  • When I try to print online with my HP2270DW printer it only allows me to save a page

When I am on the internet and I try to print something the only options that come up are Save and Close.  My HP2270DW printer is my default printer.  I did not set it as XPS or PDS.  Is there anything I need to change in the settings of my printer to make sure that it prints pages from the Internet?

    Hi @bwlosey,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that when you try to print online, your printer is only allowing you to save. I am happy to help!
When I search for your printer, I am coming up with a Brother HL-2270DW, not an HP printer. Is this the type of printer you have? If so, I would recommend contacting Brother Support.
Otherwise, if you do have an HP printer, please reply with the printer's Product/Model Number. To find your printer's Product/Model Number follow instructions in this link. Finding Your HP Product Model Number.

  • Icc profiles fine arts paper grayed out in Lion

Running Lion, In the print dialogue box, I can't access the icc profiles for Epson fine arts paper, even though I have the matte black cartridge installed.  In the Media Type box, the Fine Arts selection includes all three fine arts papers for my Epson 2880 printer, but all three are grayed out.  However, it works fine for matte papers.  My icc profiles (including the three for Epson fine arts papers) are installed in ~/Library/Colorsync/Profiles, also in HD/Library/Colorsync/Profiles.  Any suggestions?

Same problem with greyed out profiles for Fine Art Papers
The ICC Profiles for the Epson fine art papers that I downloaded from their site are coming up with errors in the ColorSync Profile First Aid. I redownloaded the profiles, but they’re still showing up as bad profiles and they can’t be fixed.
    Sample error:
    Header padding is not null.
Tag 'DEVD': Tag reserved field is not zero.
Tag 'DEVS': Tag reserved field is not zero.
The file is locked. Could not be fixed.
So what do I do now?

  • Which program is best for fine art images?

I am a watercolor artist who captures and prints her own fine art images using Epson R2880 printer and Epson Fine Art Velvet paper.  I have thus far only used Picasa... but am now ready to step it up to Adobe... I am on the trial membership for the Cloud.. but am overwhelmed by all the programs available, like Photoshop CC and Dreamweaver... I have no idea what the differences are and which one would be best for my needs... I am really only adjusting my images for white balance, color balance, contrast, hue and saturation etc... and need to be able to isolate certain sections of the image at times to do that... (which I can't with basic programs like Picasa).  Please help!!!

My goodness!  You have jumped straight in with a full Creative Cloud subscription?  Way to go, as we say in this part of the world.
Ahhh...  Just read your post again, and I see you are on the trial.   The Photographer's bundle deal would have been ideal for you, with Photoshop and Lightroom for just $10 a month, but you have just missed that, unless you have previously owned and Adobe application.    But Photoshop is the way to go if you only want the one application.
There some great learning aids on Adobe TV, or get a sunscription to Lynda.com for a few months.
Someone mentioned Illustrator for line art.  After using Photoshop since it was first released fo the PC, I have recently started learning Illustrator, and I'm having one jaw dropping moment after another.  I had no idea it could do so much.  So that might be worth considering, but only in addition to Photoshop.

  • Fine Art paper selection greyed out.

I am using PS5 with a MAcBook Pro (OS_X 10.7.5) with an Epson 3880 printer. The paper selection menu greys out Fine Art papers. I need to use those papers. Don't know how to fix this. Need help.

The selection of media type is tied to the paper feed path...some media such as fine art watercolor needs to be maunally fed. Once you select a manual feed path you should be able to access the fine art paper selections.

Finding the OS X version and build information on your Mac
    2. If the computer is running Windows I will need to know what version (ex. 32-bit or 64-bit).
I have provided another link from the HP web site showing you how to check if its 32-bit or 64-bit

  • HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome

HP LASERJET CP1525nw print error when printing online Gmail emails with Google Chrome. Extra large font sizes and weird formatting issues only when printing emails from Gmail within Chrome. No problems when printing the same email from Gmail+Internet Exolorer or Thunderbird. Using the IE Tab extension in Chrome prints the email correctly but the style of Gmail's message window is completely weird ie: formatting bar is spread out vertically instead of horizontally. I believe it is clear that this is an application specific issue between the HP LASERJET CP1525nw printer and Google Chrome + Gmail. This printing scenario does not occur when printing anything else or when printing via another printer. I would appreciate receiving any suggestions to solve this issue.
