Sending FCP Segment to Shake

Seen a bunch of info searching google, but no solution. Here is what I have.
Warning, im a Star Wars dork, so im working on a fan film, actualy just some test footage to see how much of a pain this is going to be. So I have 11 mins of DV footage, cut it down to a sequence that is 1 min, 11 secs. The video footage consists of a large capture that I split into segments off of DV start/stop points. So what happens, I have this sequence, right click on it, send to shake, and it opens in Shake with 12 video nodes, which all apear empty in the viewer. Under the first clip node, I see listed as the correct file: //Brian-mac/Volumes/Project Data/Final Cut Pro Documents/Capture Scratch/SW Test 1/10-21.mov. Under SFileIn, I see Segment3_from__10_21.
Something is right, or im prolly doing something wrong. Any help would be great!
Thanks!

You've got a few issues here.
1) you don't really understand what FCP sends to Shake and what Shake ends up doing with it.
2) you don't have a very good workflow for your solution.
Ok...
1) FCP sends the entire captured clip to Shake. Shake doesn't do timeline as such (though you CAN see it in timeline order) but as a series of nodes. In this case... the nodes are set thru time by a switcher node. Are your Globals set to show the entire span of time? Each "Clip-node" is turned on by the switcher... so will remain black at a frame that it isn't switched on at... if that makes sense.
2) Most of the time Shake workflow is such.
EDITOR: "DUDE... I need Shot 35B72 done by tomorrow so I can drop it in the timeline for that slacker of a director to see."
SHAKE ARTIST #1: "Man, I've been roto'n that darn thing for a week... whose idea was it not to build that set extension??? Why didn't they drop a green screen behind that tree?? -- ok, I'll pull an all nighter and have it for you by 11pm tomorrow (under breath "stupid editors - always playing golf and I haven't seen the sun in three weeks.")
EDITOR: "DUDE... I need Shot 14C22 done by tomorrow so I can drop it in the timeline for that slacker of a director to see."
SHAKE ARTIST #2: "WHAT??? I just got the robot from that Maya slacker today... they didn't even send me an ambient occlusion pass yet!! -- ok, I'll pull an all nighter and have it for you by 11pm tomorrow (under breath "stupid editors - always playing golf and I haven't seen the sun in three weeks.")
etc etc etc
Shake works best on shots... not so much scenes - though it can.
Build your shots in Shake and export to FCP... then compile and edit there. No reason to send an entire timeline to Shake... only ends up making this program really hard!!
Good luck,

  • Motion 3 problem - sending FCP sequence to Motion

I have been working in Motion 2 for the past three months. I just got Motion 3.
I'll take a sequence that I edited in FCP - I edited clips ABCDE together - and try to send it to Motion. Each clip's original length was 10 seconds, but in FCP I edited them together so that they are only 3 seconds long in a 15-second sequence. Then I go to Send To>Motion. I save the Motion project.
I add some text. Everything is fine. Then I add a behavior. Suddenly those five clips are not edited in their 3-second-long segments anymore - they are their original lengths of 10 seconds and now the project is 50 seconds long instead of 15 seconds, so everything I did up to that point is ruined. When I hit Control-Z, all that happens is the behavior or whatever I just added is gone. The clips don't return to their original edited state.
What the heck? How can I stop it from doing this???
I should mention that I can export my FCP sequence to a .mov and it works okay, so yes, that is a solution. BUT - shouldn't I be able to just send the sequence to Motion?

Let's see ... I added fade in/fade out to the clip itself. I also tried to apply several different Text Sequence effects - fade from left, fade from center, glow ... that's about as far as I got because then when I deleted the last behavior, the whole thing froze up and I got mad and just quit.

  • How to send FCP edited audio clips for processing in Soundtrack?

    Hello
How do I send just the edited audio clips from hour long files to be processed in Soundtrack from Final Cut?
I need help as I'm trying to adjust some edited audio clips in Soundtrack Pro but when I send them from FCP to Soundtrack - it opens the whole original audio file and then any adjustments I apply in Soundtrack are being processed over the whole audio file not just the short edited audio clip that I want to adjust.
Normally I don't mind as my scenes are usually short and Soundtrack analysis over the whole scenes audio is usually desirable, but this projects files have been transfered from tapes as hour long AVI files (all the tapes clips transfered into one hour long files) and every FCP edited audio clip I send is being treated as an hour long audio file in Soundtrack.
I'm sure there's a simple answer for settings but I haven't been able to find it.  Any advice appreciated.
    Barra

Thanks Javi, my sequence is an hour and half duration so what I'm trying to do is save processing time in Soundtrack by just processing adjustments on the few audio clips that need processing.
I have set Soundtrack to open referenced audio only and with 5 sec in and out handles, but it still imports the whole original audio file into Soundtrack timeline upto the selected clip, I then double click in Soundtrack on the clip in brackets, and it then selects just the audio clip I want to adjust, then Soundtrack will just process on the edited clip but when I 'render to action' it seems to apply changes to whole original audio file - taking longer than I want.... frustrating
Also the sound always sounds very different in FCP than Soundtrack even after 'rendering to action' and rendering in FCP... this is not the easy workflow I expect from such expensive software programs, I understood that they work together in a fully integrated way, what's the problem! This is wasting my precious time and preventing me from editing not helping me, this is a common problem and yet I can find no help in the user manual - I'm not impressed!

  • Sending FCP 7 Clips to Motion 5

Is anyone else having an issue sending Final Cut Pro 7 clips directly to motion 5? Whenever I attempt to do this, it opens in motion 5, but doesn't show up. It's in the timeline, but the window is just black. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how to fix it.
    Thanks.

well it depends on the precise nature of the job in hand, but if there is a lot of multi layering, I might export as many movies as I  have layers. Or if there are only a few extra bits and pieces I might add those to the end of the layer and cut it back up and reposition in Motion. Its not an exact science, and as yet there is no official integration between fcpx and M5 yet. There may be some third party xml solution, but to be honest most of the time its just as easy and more robust to export movies from fcp.

  • Problem sending FCP sequence to Compressor

I'm a beginner at using Compressor. I had the following problems while completing the Motion 2 DVD tutorial that shipped with the Final Cut Studio Suite:
    1. Upon exporting the sequence to Compressor, FCP gave a duplicate file name warning.
    2. Compressor opened, but it would not preview the sequence I exported. Compressor said that FCP was "busy".
    3. Upon submitting the batch, the compression sequence went by very quickly and I recieved a failure message in the batch monitor.
I ended up sending the the FCP sequence to QuickTime, then I opened up the QT file with Compressor directly. When I followed the directions for compression to DVD quality, the process does seem to have worked.
Questions: Is this the only way that I will be able to compress my movies as I gain more experience with longer files & will this cause a loss in quality?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No, you should most certainly be able to
export your sequence (or a group of sequences)
    directly from FCP into Compressor.
Can you share some more details about what
    exactly you did?
I beleive that I made a mistake in installing the tutorial files from the DVD. I tried Compressor again using different footage and a totally different sequence, and I had no problems at all. Thank you for responding.

  • Sending FCP project to STP

I have a FCP project I want to send to STP but the options to do that are grayed out when I go to send to: I'm sure it's simple. . .can anyone offer help?
    Thanks

Someone may have a different solution but for me whenever I've seen this I re-install FCS2 then I have no problems.
You may want to use FCS Remover

    Uninstall Soundtrack Pro
Then use Pacifist to Re-Install Soundtrack Pro

  • Sending FCP subclip to STP without sending the master clip!

I have a bunch of subclips I want to clean up in STP, but no matter what I've tried so far, I can't get it to just send the subclip, not the entire masterclip.
    Any suggestions?

Allow me to advise and seek help in same breath. My clip (with selection linked) cannot be send as STP as 'audio file' as it is greyed out but instead only as 'multitrack project'. Any reason why?
However each audio channel can be send to STP as an audio file individually (when selection is unlinked) and not both (shift selected) together. When one,
usually top channel, is 'send to' as audio file and saved (as . stap file), edited, and saved again, when back in FCP there is only that audio clip available, the other has disappeared. But it play the corrections but sounds weird (I guess
as the other channel is missing).
I am doing something wrong here? and what??

  • Can't send FCP 7 sequence to Color 1.5

I'm having issues sending my FCP 7 to Color 1.5. This has never happened. I do a "sent to Color",

  • Problem sending FCP X audio output over USB connection

I have an Antelope Eclipse digital audio converter/monitor controller. It connects to my Mac Pro via USB.
I can play audio just fine out of Pro Tools HD Native at any sample rate.
However, I have just discovered that the audio from FCP X is distorted and "wobbly"......apparently there is a sample rate sync problem between FCP X and the Eclipse.
The audio in question is Linear PCM @ 48kHz.
Is there a problem with FCP X sending audio out through a USB 2.0 connection?
Do I need to change some FCP X settings?

Thanks for the input. Yes, I am aware of possible latency issues. I would stay with low latency sound cards like the Pro Tools card, which worked fine. There would be no D/A conversion, so latency is usually not an issue.
I have asked about compatibility with sound cards in a separate thread, just to be sure any sound card that the Mac Pro recognizes will work:

  • Sending fcp audio to stp

using fcp 6 and am unable to send audio files to sound track. stp audio file project and multitrack project are grayed out and don't go black when i control click the audio track. any suggestions?

Here's exactly what I do.  Select a clip in the timeline, control click and choose send to:  soundtrack pro audio file project.
When you do this, what happens?
What are your audio clip settings?  Could be a problem I suppose with a non fcp friendly format.  It should be 48k 16bit aiff.

  • Sending FCP audio to Soundtrack

Okay so I have a project that I need to send the audio to soundtrack, problem is when I right click on the audio and go to Send to the Soundtrack Pro Audio File Project is greyed out and pretty much my only option is to select Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project. Is there a way to link the mono audio clips together so I can make it a Audio File Project in soundtrack?

The problem is the format of your clip material. If you open up your clip in Quicktime and then save it as another format, for example, DV stream: NTSC 48khrz, and then import it back into FCP you will probably be able to then export to Sountrack.
Of course, this isn't the best solution. There may be some setting when importing footage from your deck or camera that makes this work. I noticed the audio data when from 16 bit integer to 23 bit floats, but I'd be surprised if that is the reason.
But it is definitely a format problem and I didn't find a way to fix it from within FCP (e..g, by linking or changing audio settings).

  • Can you send FCP project files through email?

If all of a projects original capture footage is copied to another hard drive and then opened with the copied saved project file on another computer, will the "new" copied project work correctly?
Can you send project files back and forth through email if your both working with the same exact copied footage?
    powermac g5 2.0 DC; powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I use iChat to send project files. I've even used it to send a missing media file here and there (overnight, of course). < </div>
iChat is tremendously under-used and misunderstood application. Being able to transfer h-u-g-e files without FTP, connecting to a server, connecting to the target Shared folder or drop box or stooping to the hassles of email is only one fascinating aspect of this cool little tool.
The Macintosh OS is full of such things.

  • Help. sending fcp timeline to color changes some clips to freeze frames

I was finishing a project in FCP that was shot on the RED. I had a number of deliverables. I cut in FCP with REDs M-res proxy QT files then uprezed (replaced the footage) to H-res for my conform.
I then "sent to color" a number of different timelines. Everything was on one layer and there were no effects or speed ramps on any of the clips.
About half the time, the timelines would be fine. The other half of the time some of the shots came in as freeze frames from earlier in the clip. This was very problematic in that I couldn't color the same scene fully. I needed to get it done in a day so I had to match what color was doing in FCP with the clips that would not come across.
I moved the clips in the timeline but they would only come in as freezes.
    Anyone heard of this before?
It compromised the quality of my job and ended up being very costly.

    Let me get this straight.
You were editing with the proxy container Quicktimes in Final Cut?
If that is true, then I'm sort of surprised that COLOR opened at all.
You should have actually "down-rezzed" the QT containers to the "P" proxy. That will cause COLOR to open up and link to the original R3D raw 4K files (if that's what you were working with). That also raises the spectre of 3K... tell me that's not so, or that is Strike Two.
There is an associated utility with the "Clipfinder" software called ColorFixer (doesn't have anything to do with film processing) that will take away the so-called and well-documented "looping bug" that afflicts large-ish spanned RED files.
That's a couple of things that occur to me right away...

  • FCP 6 stills shake when zoom/pan

I am having a problem with some stills shaking when I zoom/pan them. I have knocked down the image size and file size in photoshop but the problem still keeps coming back.

    Listen to Tim.
    Here's the larger explanation.
The flickering you see is an artifact of the interlaced nature of video. It is a result of either very thin (often horizontal) elements that exist on one scanline as is common in text/ titling or scanned images with a great deal of detail in high contrast. (Note: It does no good to import images hugely larger than the necessary pixel dimensions of the video sequence. All it does is force FCP to work harder at interpolation.)
As the alternate fields play, the offending element is essentially being turned on/off creating the impression of a flicker. The basic strategy is to get the element to exist over two scanlines so it is refreshed every time the field plays and/or to reduce the amount of contrast so the difference between ON and OFF is not noticeable.
Things to try (In increasing order of image degradation)
    • (in FCP) field order>none
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) reduce whites by 10% - reduces overly bright areas
    • (in FCP) flicker filter - minimum
    • (in Photoshop) motion blur>vertical> .2 - .5 pixels - blurs vertically only
    • (In FCP or Photoshop) Gaussian blur> .2 - .5 pixels -blurs both horizontally as well as vertically
    • (in FCP or Photoshop) deinterlace - throws away half the image and is generally not appropriate on scanned or still images.
One neat trick is to use the selection tool to limit area you apply the vertical and/or gaussian blur to only the troublesome part rather than indiscriminately soften the entire thing.
Remember: Unless you are viewing your work in the appropriate external NTSC/PAL monitor, you are playing blind. The computer monitor only shows you a proxy image.
    good luck.

  • Send to Shake Tips

Lately I've been using FCP's 'Send to Shake' quite a bit and thought I'd offer some suggestions as a means to save some time for those new to it. I suppose these are in the manual but with all I've been absorbing lately I can't say for sure.
1- Shake will not understand transitions that are part of the clip sent from FCP. These come over like a missing frame (black). Do your Shake stuff, then, once back in FCP, add your transitions.
2- Speaking of transitions. The clip Shake outputs is whole. Meaning, you can't extend it (either side) in FCP. If you want to add transitions you'll either need to roll off some of the clip or plan ahead and send a clip to Shake that's longer than needed.

    > IF you are daring you can change the File Out node to include frames less
than 1 and more than your last frame
Consider me daring - I'll give it a go ASAP.
    Very useful to know. Thanks
