Sequence to sequence editing....

Hey all,
I'm working on a music video with a ton of B-Roll footage that I've selected to a sequence. I want to know if it's possible to edit this sequence into my master sequence using the source monitor without nesting the clips.
i.e. - load my selects sequence to the source moitor and edit to the timeline without the clips being nested. The resulting clips on the timeline would be the original clips and not a nest. Make any sense?

it should work when you hold APPLE and press F-10. I have it mapped myself...look in the Keyboard Layout.

Sequence to Sequence 3 point edit

I am a FCP Newbie, Avid long time lover.
FCP is nice, but has it's moments.
These forums are great.
I have been working on a project now for two months and have learnt from the manuals and the "FCP for Avid editors" PeachpitPress book (a god send).
My question is this,
I hate the FCP subclip function so I prefer to go through my cutaway tapes and create a sequence that has all the best shots.
This way I can pre-create short sequences of shots, and save time wading through wilds when cutting.
I set F9 & F10 to "insert sequence content" and "overwrite sequence content" so that I don't end up with sequences in sequences when I final cut.
All goes well when I edit, except for three point edits.
FCP can't load sequences into the timeline from the Viewer (Avid has this handy feature so you can easily edit from one seq to another, and make navigating through footage easier!),
so I load a seq into the viewer, scrub to a clip I want,
and press 'mark clip'.
I see that it has marked the in and out for my selected clip; good.
Then I go to my timeline and find where I want the shot to END
(sometimes I know where a cutaway should end, rather then a start point),
so I mark the end point.
Next I press overwrite,
Now I would expect the shot to lay nicely where I marked an end.
But it does not,
it rather inserts ALL the shots from the viewer sequence (from the in point to the end of it's sequence), and it puts them at the start of my timeline!
Am I doing something wrong?
Has anyone found a way to make FCP behave with three point edit from seq to seq?

this is a circuitous way to work in FCP.
How so?
I am interested in a simpler or faster way of working with cutaways and footage.
I am working on documentaries with 10s of hours of unscripted footage.
There is base voiceovers and interviews that need to be covered with cutaways and recreations.
I spend time watching all the footage and found that if I break it into subclips it turns into bins full of 100s of subclips.
So I have to label each one to differentiate them.
This takes a long time to give each one a different title.
Or I could look at the small thumbnails, but then inevitably it shows the wrong frame or doesn't give me an idea of what movement it contains.
Loading each into the viewer to view them is slow going when I could just scrub through a sequence timeline of good shots.
Mini-select timelines allow me to create much fewer clips in a bin to view.
I name the sequence as to what cutaways they refer.
And again I can pre-create small sequences, or place them in an order that is not alphabetical.
I find the subclip limits annoying very often.
When I am breaking up my wilds I select the exact duration of a clip that looks nice
(I can fairly well spot how long a shot looks good before it misses it's target, or doesn't suit the style of edit).
But sometimes I need to extend it, or often add dissolves in the sequence in one of the many tweaking stages of editing; subclip limits are really annoying then.
Is there a way to always remove subclip limits when they are inserted in a sequence?

Easy, or impossible?...(re. sequence of sequences)

I'm using FCP 5.04 and on one project I used one principal sequence to edit directly other sequences.
- Is there a way to highlight the doublons ? (i can see the doublons when I open each sequence independently - but not on the main one wich contains all the sequences...even when I click on the doublon option)
- Also I would like to transform my principal sequence made of edited sequences into one sequence made of plans.
Is there an easy way to proceed without using cut&paste and loosing all the ins&out made already?...

If you use the default settings, everything used by iTunes is stored in the iTunes folder. On a Windows PC, it is here
\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
On a Mac, it is here
/Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/
So what you need to do is copy that entire iTunes folder from the Windows PC to a large enough external hard drive. Then connect that external hard drive to a Mac. When iTunes is NOT running, replace the existing iTunes folder on the Mac with the one from the Windows PC. You can either rename the existing iTunes folder, move it to another location, or delete it. The idea is for your Windows PC iTunes folder to take the place of the existing iTunes folder. When you start iTunes on the Mac, it should use the iTunes library file you transferred and iTunes should look the same as on the Windows PC.
Instead of using an external drive, you can do the transfer of the iTunes folder using a network connection between the Windows PC and Mac.
If you changed your settings so that your music and other iTunes media files are not all stored in the Windows PC's iTunes folder, please post back. You can still do it this way, but there are some additional steps.
Note: If you have protected content from the iTunes Store, you will have to register the new Mac as one of your (up to) five computers authorized with your iTunes Store account. You can do so from the Store menu in iTunes. If you are no longer using your Windows PC, be sure to deauthorize it.

I am trying to schedule a job to update the starting value of a sequence. So I need to write a strored procedure to drop and then recreate the sequence. But when i tried to cimpile the follwing stored procedue, it gave me the error "'DROP' is not a valid identifier". Is it illegal to have "Drop Sequence /Create Sequence " in a stored procedue? In general, it is a bad idea to try to encode information into a key because it
- complicates queries in the future
- complicates updates to the data in the future
- can easily be generated on the fly from other data elements
Inevitably, if you do something like what was proposed, you'll find out that the data encoded in the key gets out of date from the data stored in the row, that users are writing queries that do things like strip off the first 6 characters of the string in order to do date searches, and that users discover they want to be able to modify the data to fix the data that's encoded in the keys, which can be terribly expensive if there are child tables.
Rather than trying to do this, I would store a DATE value and a non-reset sequence. You can always generate the reference number for the user by doing a TO_CHAR on the DATE and concatenating the output of an appropriate ranking function. If the users decide that they need to correct the DATE of an event, the reference number will be updated automagically since it was never stored in the database. A number generated in the query can also be guaranteed to be gap-free, which tends to please users.

Why it is creating the null sequence in sequence file while dynamically creating a sequence file using c#

I am creating sequences in sequence file dynamically using c#.it is creating a null sequence in the sequence file everytime of execution.I have red marked in the attachments showing the difference between the original sequence and the null sequence.How can I prevent thos.Can you please help me solve this?

Drag sequence into sequence (not nesting). It was possible in the previous version of Premiere but now, when I drag the sequence into a new sequence it's not mergind all video and audio into one clip anymore. It was REALLY usefull. How can I do it again. Don't tell me to NEST sequences... this is not the same and now what I need. I wss dragin the sequence from the browser into a new sequence so it was easy to add effect on the entire sequence and also, my audio clips were combine into that one clip sequence too which was amazing. Now, with Premiere pro CC, when I drag that sequence from the browser into a new sequence, I get the original sequence... just like if I've copy/paste the entire sequence... = really bad and useless !

That is nesting.
But with CC there is now the option of adding the sequence as a one clip, or adding the original clips from the sequence. You'll find the switch in the top left of the sequence panel, under the timecode and near the magnet and wrench icons.

Source Sequence to Timeline Editing Bugs?

Hi. I'm new to PP and I've run into a couple of issues when editing from a sequence loaded into the source viewer. (i.e KEM roll style editing) I'm using 7.0.1
First problem - with the timeline set to Insert or Overwrite sequences as nests everything works fine (although i don't really see the purpose of working this way). Mostly you would want to "Insert or Overwrite as individual clips", but when i overwrite a clip the timeline ignores my in and out points which effectively means you can't do a three point edit. There's another strange bug that when you Insert the playhead jumps way off screen instead of staying at the end of the inserted clip.
Second problem - "Replace with clip from Source Monitor" and "Replace with clip from Source Monitor, Match Frame" only replaces with the nested clip, is there no way to replace with the original clip? BTW, would be great if you could map a keyboard shortcut for this command as well?

It's very consistent behaviour, happens every time.

Sequencer crashes when editing shortcut

AppV5 sequencer crashes when i edit shortcuts at "Shortcuts and FTAs"-tab.
If i use right side of tab to edit shortcuts it crashes/freezes everytime. If i use left side to edit its not crashes. This is little embarrassing feature :)

Hi, does it really crash or 'just' freeze?
If it just freezes with some sub windows open - just click somewhere outside the Sequencer (like on the taskbar, start menu..) and return to the Sequencer.

Best sequence settings for editing HD video material from Nikon D3S

Hello there,
My quesstion is, what are the best settings in FCP for editing material from the Nikon D3S?
At this point I had a sequence (automatically generated from FCP) with settings
Frame Size: 1440X1080 Aspect Ratio (1440X1080) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 X 1080
Field Dominance Upper (Odd)
Editing Timebase: 25
QuickTime Video Settings
Compressor: HDV 1080i50
Now, when I place a video clip form the D3S into the timeline, in the preview screen it does not fill the frame. I have to grab the corners and pull it to fill the gaps.
I opened the same video clip in QT to check on the inspector and this is what is telling me:
Apple OpenDML JPEG, 1280 X 720
FPS: 24
Normal size: 1280X 720
Current size: 1280 X 720 (Actual)
What do I need to do, so that the sequence settings are very similar to my AVI files? Or to make the same? I assume that if I pull the corners to fill the frame, I am loosing quality? Is that the case?
Since I need to deliver this today I will continue working on the sequence as with the former settings, but I am wondering that if I have to change the settings, will this affect my already edited material? Do I then need to start a new sequence from scratch?

I have a D3s. I'm using FCP7, it's been awhile since I used version 5 so all I can do is let you know my workflow with ver.7 If you convert to ProRes 422 1080x720 24fps, it works very well, change the audio from 44 to 48kHz and set the frame rate to 24 instead of 23.98
Here's what I do.
1. Copy the CF card to the HD of the computer
2. Open Compressor, in these next steps we'll make a custom Droplet.
a. In the Settings tab, select Formats > Quick Time > Apple ProRes 422
b. Drag this to "Drag Settings & Destinations Here" and click it
c. In the Inspector, select Encoder
d. Select Video Enabled, then hit Settings. Frame rate 24 > OK
e. Select Audio Enabled, then hit Settings. Choose 48 kHz
f. Save As. Name it. It will be in > Settings tab > Custom
g. Click your new Cutom setting
h. File > Create Droplet
i. select your new custom setting
j. save it to the desktop, leave destination as source.
3. open the Droplet,
4. drag all you D3s clips in, change destination to a new folder
Now you have all your original .DVI and the converted ProRes clips
5. Open FCP, select Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings
6. in the Sequence Setting tab select Apple ProRes 422 1280x720 48kHz
7. Clip Duplicate and give it a new name
8. change the Editing Timebase to 24 > OK
9. select the summary tab click Create Easy Setup
10. name it, give it a description > Create
11. the next time your open FCP use this Easy Setup
12. your D3s clip should not need rendered now.
13. When your done editing use Send to Compressor
14. Vimeo will accept a wide varity of formats
15. I use Quicktime H.264 with settings set to best
16. For Blu-ray I use Export to QT Movie and use Sony DVD Architect to author the BD at 35 mbps, but that's another story.

What are the best sequence settings for editing a movie made on your iPhone

I have a lot of footage taken on my iPhone 3Gs. I want to make a summer fun movie and compile all the clips together. What are going to be my best sequence settings to make editing of the footage easy and viewable in real time without the need to render. Is this possible?

Open the videos in QT Pro player and export to a codec and frame rate consistent with any easy set up such as NTSC DV and edit that.

Changing a sequence preset after editing

Hey everyone. I'm in a situation where I chose the wrong preset, edited my project with nested sequences and a multicam sequence, and now need to change the sequence preset or adjust the frame size. Is it possible to change the preset of a sequence without making a new one? This wouldnt be a problem if I didn't have a nested sequence in my project. Thanks!

Yeah thats the problem. I'll lose all of my edited footage that I created with the multi-cam editor, since that sequence depends on another sequence that was the wrong preset. I'd have to redo the entire project basically

Sequence as an edit substep type?

Hello,
I see no way to choose an adapter type of "sequence" when adding a substep for a step type, although every other type is listed (labview, activex, dll etc). Is there a way to do this?

Hi, goto Configure in the seq editor window and select "Adapters...". Here you can see that the Sequence adapter is hidden. Uncheck the checkbox and you are ready to go. (previous versions of TS did not hide the Sequence adapter)

Best sequence setting to edit 23.98 and 29.97 frame rates on???

I'm making a documentary film that has source material at 2 different frame rates. Our cameras shot DVC Pro HD 720p at 23.98, however the stock footage which makes up about half the film is XDCAM EX 1080P shot at 23.98. Any suggestions on the best way to handle this. I tried converting the XDcam footage to match ours at 23.98 in compressor but it gets a strobey look to it. Would it be better to edit on a 29.97 timeline or ?????

They are both 23.98 frame rates...so your topic doesn't make sense. If you have 23.98 frame rates, edit on a 23.98 timeline. WHy would you choose a 29.97 timeline?

Sequence within sequence... do chapter markers come with it at QT?

I've had a look around, can't see this and have searched. When I drop a sequence into a sequence, do the chapter markers come with it so when I QT them and send to IDVD, the sequence chapters will be there or on the new timeline with the completed sequences, should I (again) add markers?

Never used that feature, wouldn't have known it would keep the timeline markers, but a good solution.
Only caveat is that it doesn't show the markers in the nest itself. (if one wanted to have the visual reference.)
I've never been really hip on using nests, preferring to dupe seqs, with incremental naming...personal preference.
